  • Fly fishing from a raft or drift boat can open up new sections of water that wading anglers have difficulty accessing. But when you don't have access to this kind of river transportation you have to get a bit creative. In comes the canoe, or as we like to call it - the drift boat of the North East! In this video we float a section of one of our favorite rivers and enjoyed a very productive day on the water. We fished streamers, nymphs, and even hit a sulfur hatch for some excellent dry fly fishing! This trip had it all!

    I have done a lot of river fishing in a canoe. To slow your drift and keep the canoe straight you need an anchor that will slow you down without stopping you. We used a plastic laundry detergent bottle filled with sand. The plastic allowed it to slip off of the rocks so it would not hang up very often. You could also use a big piece of chain.

    Good job fellas. Good adventure day with some nice browns! Definitely doing this in a canoe is a different challenge than a drift boat. Two great young men that were open to the challenge. Would be great to hit a piece of water together this year. Tightlines!

    Wonderful to see you guys out on the water with the sulphurs, yes great way to celebrate Dan's graduation you can certainly cover the water in the Canoe funny enough that's what I have been doing going out in friends Canoe but we don't have the beautiful buttery trout on the river here in the uk sadly, still I can dream, Thanks for sharing look forward to your camping trip.

    Some nice fish here guys. Float fishing is HARD. You are right it is best to use an indy, or do dries/dry dropper. Nice to hop in and out too and nymph pockets that you wouldn't typically get to on foot. Gotta love it. Look forward to the next bug series. Hope the Slate Drakes treated you well!

    • @BackyardBassin
      @BackyardBassin  4 года назад

      Agreed! That was definitely the ticket from a canoe! You are absolutely right though, probably the best thing was being able to access places that we wouldn't typically wade. Thanks for watching, Mike!

      Technically it is a french onion dip container lol but we use it to examine nymphs when flipping rocks and seining. Works really well having the white background for contrast! We used it a lot this past weekend filming some slate drake nymphs. Going to be some cool footage!

      @@BackyardBassin That's awesome. Makes perfect sense. May I ask what tool you use for seining? Curious about how other people do it. I have seen a variety of stuff and techniques. Thanks for any feedback!

    Thingamabobber drop shot rig. Split shot on very bottom with flies between bobber and splitshot. Keeps you flies vertical and eliminates telescoping. Proper term might be Provo rig. This is how we fish nymphs drifting the SoHo in TN.

    • @BackyardBassin
      @BackyardBassin  4 года назад

      I will keep that in mind! Thanks for the tip. The SoHo is on our list of places to fish. Love a good tailwater! Sounds like a great river.

    a few quick questions - What are the name of those "pinch on" indicators you use? and, are they adjustable? Meaning, can you pinch them on, then decide when you get to a deeper pool to move them up the leader if needed? Or are they set in place permanently once you pinch them on? Thanks for any help! You guys are awesome!

    • @BackyardBassin
      @BackyardBassin  4 года назад

      I don't know if there is a specific name for the pinch-on indicators that we use since we buy adhesive craft foam from our local craft store and cut them all our manually. Saves a bit of money since you can only really use them once. The stuff we use is adjustable though, as in you can move them up and down the leader to adjust for depth. Another bonus is that they don't move while casting either. The one downside is taking them off your line - they are difficult to remove and sometimes leave the leader a bit sticky (although they stickiness goes away after time). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

      Hi Paul, thanks for reaching out! We camped in the Lolo National forest which has multiple camp sites as you drive up rick creek road. They're tent camping only and are pretty cheap. There are also some free sites along the road as well, but they do not have bathrooms or bear boxes. Hope this helps! Thanks for the support!
