- The Black Forest Trail is rated as the most difficult backpacking trail in Pennsylvania. With is rugged terrain and many stream crossings, this trail is one that gives you a feeling of total isolation. We set off on the trail with the goal of accessing some of these isolated streams in hopes of catching some native brook trout.

This is gonna sound silly, But fly fishing is for me, almost a spiritual experience, Being out in nature, the sound of the stream, the anticipation of the next fish, it heals my soul, it's my therapy, my drug. Robert Nielsen I’m so sorry Robert. I’m circling the drain health-wise but I still try. I actually tied a rope around a rock to help me get in to my favorite spot. If I can’t fish I take photos, read poetry and pan for gold. God bless you sir.

I love hiking back to small "unpressured" streams. Combining backpacking and fishing is the best of both worlds. Love it. Good times.

You guys need to enjoy every moment going brookie fishing. I am old and have bad knees. Keeps me from going to places you have. It is my passion. People laugh at me for how small the brookies are. It not just that. The outdoors, waterfalls, Rhododendrons, ferns, etc..

Did the same trail in 99, I was in a little bit of hurry, but the tough terrain slowed us down. Took us 4 days. I caught one of the biggest brown trout's on the whole trip, he was a 2 pound'er. awesome area. Great video I loved it.

My first trout was a brookie, about 3” caught on a tiny worm I scrounged from the gritty soil of the high country in Sussex Co. N.J. I was 12 yrs. old on a hike with our scout pack from Christ The King Church Manville, N.J. I never got over it. That was 66 yrs. ago.

Had to pack light so it worked just perfectly!
@@BackyardBassin If you want to pack light, then make your own fly rod case (mine is like 8oz) and drop those 2-3 lbs. The silicone net saves lives (especially something so small). Hat looks cool, but not so great for the fish. Just saying.

This was definitely a young persons trip...but it was beautiful. At 66 I can't do those anymore...but I sure do some short ones to fish the mountains of East TN where I live. Enjoy every moment....age really slows you down. I start fishing at 5 years old...and still do it today...but I am limited as to some of the places I can go. Enjoy being young...and enjoy making memories. They last a life time!!

Nice video brings back many fond memories. I did a lot of hike in fishing for brook trout all over the northeast. I have fished for just about every fish species in freshwater and salt but fishing for native brook
Trout is absolutely my favorite fishing.many people might not get it people would often ask me why i spent so much time fly fishing for small fish usually only 8"to 12" but to me there isn't a more beautiful fish than the native brook trout. And the scenery is beautiful. Brookies don't live in ugly places.
I agree w nearly everything you said. Grew up in NJ- did lot of Brookie fishing in rural VT. In CO now, I think native cutthroat surpasses brookies in both size/ beauty. 4 very unique strains in CO seperated by Mtns, restricted to 10% of native range (largely due to introduction of Brookies, which grow larger than back E due to far more cold clear water.) Remote creeks back E are beautiful, but I think alpine terrain where Cutts are found is even more stunning. Only trout I've seen (on RUclips) that probably surpasses Cutts in coloring & location is California's Golden Trout in the high Sierras. Enjoy the brookies, I look fwd to fishing in ME this summer. Try to go after some Cutthroat at some point.

Growing up, we had a camp close to Slate Run. So many fond memories fishing Slate and the surrounding area. I've done the BFT a couple of times doing what you guys depict... those 20mi days are brutal!

As soon as i read 42 miles of brook trout i knew exactly were they were going, these streams have been my haven for 51 yrs now. Started fishing these streams in 1969, learning from my grandfather and father as a 4 yr old. They taught conservation, so ive always been a catch & release fisherman when it comes to brook trout. Every spring i do keep and eat two brookies in honor of my grandfather & dad and i'd give anything i had to be able to fish with them for 1 hour. As a 16 yr old my dad took me to their favorite spring fed tributary, you have to walk far in but it is so worth it as most fish are 10-14 inches on the average (it's rare, not common) as any local could attest. Still at my age, i hike in there every spring and camp out for 2 nights and dread the day that i'll no longer be able to enjoy that area. I am haunted by these waters and a river runs through it.....great job gentleman !!

Reminds me of fishing back when I was a kid living in PA. Live in MS now and would love to get back there and do some trout fishing. Great video!
Nicely done video. I was planning a flyfishing/backpacking trip there last week with friend, but we decided to go to Medicine Bow, WY instead. We backpacked into the remote high mountain lakes...caught a lot of splake, rainbows, goldens, and brookies. I have this trail on my calendar for next spring.
Highly recommend! Make sure you give yourself plenty of time though. We think it would have been nicer at a slow pace
Growing up in Western Pa, We would go on camping/hiking trips way up in the ANF. Looks a lot like this. The native brookies were absolutely gorgeous.
I have heard from friends that still live there that the fishing is nowhere near what it was when I was there (1990's).

I was climbing up the bank going around a waterfall when I seen it, I’m not sure if it was rattling or if I just couldn’t hear it over the sound of the falls, but I’m certain my heart stopped, lol. I was so scared, but having survived it I can honestly say it was definitely one of my more memorable trips. I really enjoyed your video and you have a wonderful channel!

I even had one swim across big Pine Creek once as my dad and I were fishing which was actually pretty neat. We have rattle snakes also in british columbia canada , I saw a rattle snake on the trail, it was cool to see it did not bother us it just crawled around slowly,

You guys are a lot tougher than me but good on ya for hiking so far back into the wilderness. I grew up in that area and there are still some pretty remote areas in NW PA. I’m in California now and last winters snow levels were epic. Mountain streams are like fishing Niagara Falls but I’m finding slow water eddies that are full of wild brookies, browns and rainbows. It’s great fun exploring for fishable water. Wish you guys could make a trip out to the Sierra some time.
Sounds like you live in an incredible area for backpacking with a fly rod! I bet the mountains there would be gorgeous. I would love to hike the Sierra's someday actually. It's definitely on the bucket list. It would be cool to catch a golden trout some day. And not one of those ungly golden rainbows :)

For Brookies try a #22 king prince. The olive emerger style is killer. I use the king prince in multiple sizes in Utah, Idaho, montana

I use to do this in the Adirondacks.
You would be amazed at the tiny brooks that held mature fish. Some brooks were only a foot wide but deep. It was an awesome adventure.
I used topo maps back then.

Backyard Angling I’ve had two hostile encounters so far. One charged and the other huffed from cover. Be sure you and your partners are carry either a 357 magnum or 44 magnum with Underwood Lead Cast ammo.
@@20cameron1 I fished in Wyoming back in the 80s. First year I was there I had guide who carried a 44 magnum. He told me of a fellow who was devoured by a grizzly while he slept in his tent. I hear now that people carry bear spray. After seeing a 9’ tall stuffed grizzly at a museum in West Yellowstone, I think I would stick with the 44.

i love brook trout fishing in the Cordoba mountains in Argentina. all native. full. small but fun. just 0 or 1 spooners. 5 in 2 hours average. boots and pants to avoid viper bites. occasional rainbow. occasional condors overhead. sandwich lunch. 2.200 meters high. 800 meter stretch of river. unbeatable

We were using a 4 piece rod. It was a 10 foot 3wt. As for the reel it was an Orvis hydros but since the fish are so small in these streams you could get away with something much cheaper. Would like to get get a tenkara rod for future trips. Thanks for watching! Hope this helps!

Even before you jumped, I recognized that at timber rattlesnake or copperhead habitat. You need to learn that too and be on guard. Watch for stony areas and overhangs. Watch for logs in the trail you have to step over.
Plenty of rattle snakes in this area! No copperheads though. We love seeing the timber rattlesnakes. The timber rattlesnake is such an awesome symbol of true wilderness!

I enjoy going on similar trips in central PA and plan on checking out the area you guys went to, but my only question for you is where do you get your maps? I’ve struggled to find nice close up maps with trails/streams on them lately that aren’t just google images. Thank you, great video!
We printed a paper map from online. Very small though. We lucked out however when we got to the trailhead - there was a single map remaining that we took with us on the trail. Sorry we couldn't provide better direction but if you call the DCNR office I bet they could send you a map.

We are using a 3wt. Definitely more than what we need but in the case where we could get into large browns it's a great all-around rod

Glad you enjoyed the video! We are using a 10 foot 3 weight nymph rod. Probably use this rod 90% for any of our trout fishing applications. We're fishing a long leader tight line setup off of the reel. Can't remember what kind of reel. It's not a good one
