digging that shadow rod. what weight reel would you max out with this? i always try to keep it light as possible while having decent max drag. i was thinking spin fisher vi. it's like 13oz with 20lb max drag and holds enough 20-30lb braid. too lightweight, or is that as money as i think?

Im near cottman torresdale in NE. I was looking at a few spots, may try the schuylkill. Down to catch any fish, but targeting flatheads mostly. Im more of a salt water guy, and fished in brigantine mostly in nj, and the chesapeake bay area when i lived in va for a little while, as well as cape hatteras. How do you know where to start? It looks like you are at Sandy Hook. How do you pick an area at the shore to get them? Are the fish plentyful enough to say go to Avon, Keyport on the same day?

Is there anywhere in NJ that I can fish the surf without casting over 12 ft waves coming at me! From fall to winter I’ve been getting banged up by crazy surf waves. Any area that doesn’t have this ????
You just have to check the surf report. This fall saw some huge swells and a lot of them surprising. So just make sure there isn’t any big swells coming.
Paul Zito watch the cams on surfers view. You can even get a gauge of the waves at night on them. It’s how I make my decision to go from Philly where I live
Though the new restrictions on Bluefish & Striped Bass may seem unfair to us surf fisherman, but only within the past 11 seasons have I seen a gradual decalin in numbers and within the passed three years Bluefish come in during the spring & leave and you don't catch them during the fall run. Party boats never targeted Striped Bass during the 1970's and only up until the early 1990's they started fishing for them. I was in a local tackle store and a mate who worked on a party boat was at the counter and I said to him I saw your postings on Noreast .com and he sarcastically said oh, you look at posting ?! I know the owner of this boat and I wanted to tell this idiot to tell your boss not to post pictures of hundreds of Bass between 25 - 50 LBS on the floor of the bow and in barrels full of breeders don't you think the DEC isn't watching this and I'm glade they did. Guess what, the DEC saw all this and they proposed a slot limit that winter and now they're going to ! 2019 we had a half decent spring run of Bluefish and this past fall lot of Bass from Montauk, Robert Mosses through the Rockway's and all the fish were only between 20 and 34 inches no big Bass and no Bluefish were seen. Poachers & Party Boat have depleted the breeders buy showing off on posted forums they've wreaked there business and the poachers take all. I've been surf fishing for 33 years off of Breezy Point, but in the last four years I've seen a scary decline in numbers and size in these fish including menhaden/bunker, and now the DEC is cracking down.. It makes it tough on catch & release guys and every now and then you'll take one home for the table. And then we see idiots dragging a stringer of 15 Bluefish to their truck and we have to suffer because of their take all mentality & Greed..
