Topwater Striper Fishing SHALLOW Water. Foggy Dusk Bite

  • Some fishing from late summer on a cool foggy day. Despite overcast conditions, the daytime action was beat, lost a decent fish and caught a sea robin on a mag darter. At dusk, wading some shallow flats in the backbay, caught some Stripers on a smack it jr popper. The fish were hanging out in some very shallow water.... perhaps the super shallow water was the coolest and drew the bass in to more of their comfort range. I dunno. There werent any 50 pounders swimming around in that shallow stuff but casting at waking fish can be a good time.

    Finally another surf casting video!
    Light tackle beach and backwaters fishing is my favorite type for stripers. Larger schoolies to smaller keepers are the ones I love the most. I love how aggressive and strong they are for their size vs the bigger cows.

    • @ChrisMcIntee
      @ChrisMcIntee  5 лет назад

      I like weightless plastics, small bombers or yozuris, or jigs up to 1oz depending on how deep/how fast the current is, but if the blues are bad like that you might want to try fishing a different tide or a different spot altogether. Or, just embrace the blues, throw some plugs or spoons and have some fun.

    Just curious what time of year the cows get caught? Im from Indiana but seriously wanna try my luck with the big stripers. My family from narragansett and ive heard stories but there dead now and i know nothing. Might plan a vaca but dont know shit. Any info is helpful

    • @ChrisMcIntee
      @ChrisMcIntee  5 лет назад +5

      loaded question you have... Ill give you an equally loaded answer. the short answer is, the cows get caught 12 months a year. Slightly more in depth answer tho is the fish migrate from the mouth of the chesapeake bay in the winter, along the coast from april-june, and then anywhere from long island to maine for the summer. then around early fall they start their southerly journey back to virginia. from there you have populations of holdover fish, some could be considered "cows", all throughout their range. The hudson river and every other major estuary along their migration route is likely to have some resident cows. Nova Scotia has 50lb fish in the summer. Some years the fish stay well offshore, we are not allowed to target them out past 3 miles offshore. Other years they're migration will take them much closer to shore. weather and bait movement could determine the path they take. Generally you wont find true cows, like 40lbers and up, casting from shore without putting in years of work. I have striper fished since I was a kid and I have never caught a scaled 40lb fish.... once every couple years Ill get one close to that size but never have a scale when it happens. The guys who catch large are generally very dialed into their respective fishery, generally they fish all night long for periods of time, year after year. If you are planning a trip from the midwest, and you want to catch cows, there is only one way and that is to book a charter. With that, you will have a shot at catching big fish. I know these fish fairly well and can say I cant catch cows consistently, even being able to travel and fish often. I dont spend too much time persuing the cows other than the spring in the river and the fall in the boat/kayak, and only if there is a reasonable chance of it happening (some years it doesnt happen). When the stars align I can find some big ones but only when the opportunity arises. Whomever knows how and where to catch the big ones from shore, generally isn't sharing that information with anyone other than their closest fishing buddies. Narragansett still holds big fish. I have never fished there though and certainly cant guess where or when. Striped bass are far more than a fish, millions of people along the metropolis target them as they are in all our back yards at some point or another. Timing and location are key and its the kind of thing where the amount of work you put into it will determine the size and frequency of your catch. From indiana you could certainly come to the east coast and catch 20" class fish no problem but 40"+ class is a much more elusive fish.

    • @saganworshipper6062
      @saganworshipper6062 5 лет назад

      On a more serious note, everything Chris said in his above comment is spot on. Personally, from shore, I've been fishing these waters for many years and I have only landed a single 40 pounder (41 lbs to be exact) catching cows from the beach is seriously futile. Having said that, the best time here in CT is right now until about the end of October and then the fish go bye bye. Alligator sized bluefish are currently being caught from the beach right now as well.
