Yes!! And my friend pointed out that the clear tone on the high riff Peter was talking about was a conscious choice. It's the difference between a ballad and a blues delivery. She could explain it better than I can but I wanted to mention it.

Avi said this was his scratch demo. They did all kinds of takes but decided this was the best. I assume he then layered his voice and added stuff but the piano and his vocals were the base for it all.
Explains the sounds in the recording i think. Also blows my mind how beautifully controlled his voice is.

Whenever my soul needs healing, or a hug, or a lift up, I turn to Avi’s music because he’s so grounded and true. His voice is so smoky and full of movement and grace; strong when it’s required, gentle at moments of tenderness. I’ve yet to see him in person but when I do, I’ll be in Earthly Heaven!😊❤

    Thanks Peter. A nice breakdown.
I prefer Avi singing a bit lower in his range too but I seem to remember him talking about the vocal coaching that he continues to get and always working on keeping his higher notes.
I also believe Avi doesn't use background singers on his recordings. It is always only him.
I believe we will hear more from him this year. He sent out a message that last year was for family for him.

In case you haven't yet seen it, Avi did a Short about how different the recording process was for "Healing", and how they ended up using his scratch vocal. ruclips.net/user/shortsxTd7_18EaeA And the man on piano is Daniel Ellsworth, who was the keyboardist on Avi's first solo tour in 2019, and he also played piano in the 4-song Sunset Sound session that Avi and Shooter Jennings put together (if you've watched it, Daniel blows us away in "When I'm a Fool").

Avi did actually train in college as an operatic basso profundo, in addition to his classical vocal training. Add to that the fact that he still takes voice lessons (especially during the Covid lockdown, when he did it via Skype & Zoom) to continue to hone his chops and strengthen and protect his voice for touring. Interesting aside, during his 2022 European tour, he got sick but refused to cancel any shows, instead taking the songs down in key, and he still gave awesome shows.

I already loved this song (and Avi), but you pointed out things that made me understand why I love his music! Thank you. I love Avi in all his ranges, but I agree that his voice is just exrra gorgeous in the lower register. Avi has said that this song is meant to be a cathartic experience, a mantra, to help in Healing.

Love your reactions to Avi's solo music. He has a way of touching your heart and soothing your soul like I've never felt from anyone else. It's been a while since your last reaction of Avi's music, and I was thrilled to see and hear this wonderful review of his new song (yours is my favorite). I hope you'll be reacting to more of his songs in the near future. I would like to suggest "All is Well "- the 7Layers Session, "It Knows Me" , "Chains", " Try To Get It Right" , "He Don't Love You Right" , and for a real change of pace "I'm Only Getting Started". Really, you can't go wrong with any song by Avi . As another reactor put it, "Avi is one of one !" I agree.. You also have a wonderful voice, and I really enjoy listening to you ❤☺

Thank you for this reaction and comment - you are very informative! For the most beautiful demonstration of his upper register, please listen to the 'All is Well' 7Layers Session. The alt version of 'Aberdeen' is a wonderful example of how his lower register gives a song soul.

  • @kathyfolkerts4433

Just one more thought- i think he's using the cleaner tone in his high range on this song because it's more a ballad style (piano etc), and "Change on the Rise" is more bluesy, so he uses that rougher tone to be authentic to the style. I think they're intentionally different voice production techniques. Listen to "Change" and tell me what you think!

So ironic! It was Avi who drew me into a cappella music, and now he's not doing a cappella anymore! My very first PTX encounter was "Carol of the Bells" and I was so enthralled with the rich beauty and depth of Avi's voice that I must have watched the video 10 times before I even noticed that it was a cappella. But you're right. . .this music represents the true Avi. (In case anyone's wondering, yes, I'm still a Pentaholic!)

Yes, he did get training in his undergrad work at Mt. SAC under Bruce Rogers. As his high school teacher, I convinced him to go there, because I knew he would get the experience he needed. And of course, he helped the extracurricular group there, Fermata Nowhere, to win the national ICCA championship. An a cappella group is nothing without a great bass. And yes, I gave him as much training and opportunities as possible in the four years I had him. He has developed his voice so wonderfully! It's funny to hear you, Peter, talk about his range. I remember him in the middle of choir rehearsal stopping me and saying, in his rich low voice, in reference to a Bb3: "Mr. H. That's too high for me to sing." We all got a very good chuckle out of that. Just want to say that Avi is one of the best human beings on this planet, regardless of his super talents.

You made a great point about gratuitous bass notes. If it’s organic to the song, it’s awesome. If it’s tossed in just because you can, I’m not so much a fan. When you guys (Bass Gang) started I think there was some extra bass, BUT given the group’s name and at the time you were establishing yourselves as deep bass singers, it didn’t bother me. Now I think for the most part you guys arrange songs so that the low notes are there for more of a musical reason, and I appreciate that. Even with Voiceplay-and you know I adore them-there are times when I think Geoff throws in subs where they aren’t needed. The group has kind of risen to greater fame because people do love them, but I like it better when they belong there, musically.

I really really really hope we will get an Interview with Avi and you soon. It will be so interesting to hear you 2 talk about music and not just the basic stuff we always hear in Interviews.
There will be a few new songs coming out soon. The next song seems to be more Rock, at least from the first few seconds he shared so far. He's always in for a few surprises I guess.
I don't know if you saw all of his short videos he released the last few years but if not it would be an honor if you could react to them. I put up a few Compilations of these shorts so it's easier to put up an reaction video because on their own they're only about 30 seconds long. 😅 Feel free to use my videos if you are interested 👍

Thank you for your analysis and commentary! I wonder, since he's a guitar player, if he wrote it for guitar - the diminished chord is a common "passing chord" to achieve a chromatic sounding transition. i do believe i could use this song for meditation - good stuff!
