- Albertville, FRANCE - 1992 Winter Games, Figure Skating, Ladies' Original Program - Surya Bonaly of France placed 3rd after this skate. Interviews with Nancy Kerrigan and Kristi Yamaguchi of the United States follow.
Those stars to butterfly to sit spin is one of her best/smoothest moves … nice quality.
It looks to me like she used that little hop after the double axel to disguise an insecure landing.
Dylvente clever honestly haha
I've noticed her do that at different events. Surya tries to be sneaky
looked like travelling camels not stars. did scott misspeak?
I love the Tod Hamilton and his commentary with her jumps landing on 2 feet when actually does not. Makes u want to think before speaking. She ended up in 3rd place overall in this original program. She won't beat Yamaguchi nor Kerrigan in the second set of mark for presentation. Nice Job with the overall program and to destroy the Yamaguchi and Ito rivalry.
I'm all about them shoving them kids aside ha ha ha! Kid probably still in therapy nearly 30 years later ha ha!
Ditto that. The program is great. The costume is hideous and doesn't fit the music at all.
Her spins look good here at least.
I love surya she is my fav figure skatet ever most underrated skater but this outfit made no sense with this type of music lol still love her
It was Christian Lacroix. I dont think she had a choice.
I read somewhere that the costume was an original haute couture design by the world famous designer Christian LaCroix. Yes, it is hideous.
How did that apology go? I'm sorry for doing back flips to distract you. Hope you're okay.
she doesn't have anything to do with the fact midori is missing things left to right.. if Surya did a 3lutz instead of bflip would it be worse. nonsense 😊
For all her skill on the ice that won her two Olympic medals, Kehrigen is DULL
Underrotated triple lutz 1/4 cheat.
Everyone cheates at the jumps
This performance from Bonaly should have medalled considering everyone---except Yamaguchi fell on their asses several times. Kerrigan fell 5 times. Ito fell in both programs deserved only a bronze if that. Surya was consistent throughout. She was robbed in her own country. Kerrigan was the most held up skater in the history of figure skating. She didn't deserve a medal here. Yet the americans here refuse to post how Surya was robbed in favor of Kerrigan and Ito. Ito cracked from the mental pressure of the U.S media which wore her down to favor Yamaguchi. The media called Ito ugly, ungraceful and mannish etc. Back then a fall meant a .5 deduction.
This is the short program. All the top 3 skaters skated clean. It was in the long program that Surya had a couple mistakes. (although I do agree with you on Kerrigan)
Midori completed a triple axel, that is what got her to the podium.
@@metsdudenj she threw it in late into the program, too, which was very gutsy. It looked a lot better than any 3Axel Tonya Harding ever landed, too.
Bonaly had an awful LP, she did not deserve to be on the podium. This SP was good, and she was correctly given the third place standing on this. In the LP, her lack of finesse was obvious. Look at those awful breaks as she set up her jumps! As Sandra Bezic correctly said.
" Because the elements of the SP are so specific, her lack of finesse will not be as apparent as it will be in the LP. She is not the skater the others are." As a former judge I can tell you she was 100% correct.
Kerrigan only fell once in her long program in Albertville; perhaps you're thinking of Hubert, who had a meltdown and fell multiple times. Kerrigan did pop some key triples into singles but still managed to complete just enough to justify her holding onto the bronze (although she probably should have been ranked below Harding and/or Chen in the long).
This short program was a good one for Bonaly, the only real issues being the lack of runout from her jump combo and 2axel. Her relative weakness in basic skating skills wasn't as evident in this performance, and the serpentine step sequence forced her to actually use some edges in her footwork, lol.
ルッツバリバリ回転不足です。ボナリーは高い高いと言われるジャンプですが、回転不足のジャンプがほとんどです。ジャンプの質が非常に悪いです。
ルッツバリバリ回転不足。
Her athleticism is great but still a notch below Midori Ito. And her artistry is clearly at the similar level as Midori’s so well it wasn’t an era rewarding technical ability more than artistic styles and she was swept aside unfortunately.
Midori Ito should have won it all…
Midori was the greatest female skater IMO.
Midori was behind Bonaly in the short since she fell on the combination jump, a major mistake. That particular mark was right. Yes Ito was better of course but she made a major mistake on a major element in the short. She honestly was gifted to be 4th due to her name, she should have been lower than that.
@@tumicduguar2583 Surya really needed a sports psychologist because she always choked under pressure. I feel her "lack of artistry" was also due to her getting tense and locking up when nervous.
@@reneerobinson3559 I agree. Also her performances at Europeans were often more fluid and artistic than Worlds or Olympics. A lot of that is she tensed up and felt the pressure a lot more as there was more at stake. Being tense also allowed her inherent weaknesses like run of the blade, edge quality, flow out of and into jumps, and overall flow to come out even more now being nervous and tense.
@@tumicduguar2583 I don't think people who criticize her skating style seem to acknoweldge she had tremendous psychological struggles. Nervousness doesn't just surface as falls. In her case, it surfaced as stiffness. She REALLY would have done well without her mother.
Surya Bonaley was a phenomenal jumper. No question!! Too bad she never learned to skate!!!!!
You can criticize her all you want Janet, but she will always have a legacy as a strong black woman pushing the boundaries of figure skating and you will be here putting her down in the RUclips comments. :)
Why are you trolling this woman? You're commenting on all all of her videos.
@@Lemmonhead101 This woman is a racist agitator who literally is on 10 different sites attacking Surya.
I thought Surya jumped well, but her skating was robotic and lacking in grace.
The costume looks like a clown. Horrid. She never really learned how to use edges. Or skate for that matter. But her tenacity and back flip are barnone.
and the sport is the subjective and u get your opinion out as her bank account and status of history and being more remembered and beloved years later than all who brat her in amateur years.
