I might have given her the bronze. No way she deserved to beat Yamaguchi or Ito. I would have had her behind Chen in the long program too but Chen would be too far back after the short. Kerrigan was ridiculously held up in the long program though.
Agreed after two years, Surya has a strong, organic athletic built which has a different and unique muscular expression more than a subtle one, also her gymnastic experience played a major role. She is graceful in her own way and is the GODDESS of ICESKATING. GOLD!!!!!!!!!
Not really. If you follow the sport you will see much of her skills are sloppy. They're super powerful and she had good raw power and talent from her gymnastics background. But she didn't have a coach that could reign it in and polish it. This is because of her creepy mom that was overbearing with her coaches and eventually became her coach, despite her not having a figure skating background. Despite not winning a major international gold, she is remembered more for being Surya, not some flash in the pan figure skater. And that's much better for her enduring legacy.

Her double axels were always good but her best jumps were the Toe and Salchow. Here, she attempted a Quad Toe. I know a few years later she went after a Quad Salchow. I don't think she could get the snap on the axel to give it another rotation, she didn't rotate the doubles that fast. She was a good jumper and will be remembered as such, but I think where she faltered is that she often went after more than she was capable of doing. Give the girl credit, she had some serious drive and didn't back down from a challenge. But once you screw one element up, it's easier to make a mistake on the next... and the next... which is where I think she often lost some of the competitions she might have won. Like perhaps this one.

@Löcé Carlisle Her basic skating was also super rusty at this point. It was blatantly obvious throughout the program. Epecialy when setting up and exiting a jump, despite that jumps were her strength. She improved on that a ton by next year.
The technical marks seem about fair, except that 5.1 one, that seems horribly low. Yes she did fall and some shaky landings but the mid to high 5s seems about right. Artistic is all over the map. Let's not forget with artistic marks judges are notorious for under scoring more strong skaters like Bonaly and Harding in favor of the more ice princess/artistic waif types, especially from countries of European influence (and look who gave her the lowest scores). Racism? Possibly, but I'd say it goes a bit further than that especially if you followed the sport for a long time. Now Bonaly gets much more recognition for her abilities than she did back then.
For some reason, I actually prefer her free skate in the 1992 Olympics over her free skate in Lillehammer at the 1994 Olympics (the same Olympics that Gordeeva/Grinkov won their second gold, the same Olympics that the whole Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan feud happened and the same Olympics that Oksana Baiul won gold)
ok im not going to say that the style of skating especially when you are seeing her in the beginning of the career via before she left Didier Gaiuagiuhr and imploded without any coach in the month after their split at the Oakland world championship 92 were her mother and her but heads after her 11th and lowest level of the career in the world championship .. wanting to turn professional and not skate in the free skate after a dismal 10th place after the original program but she was instructed by the French federation and her appointed coach not working with her but necessary for her to compete in the world championship wearing the French colors. to go out and skate the long program she was sick of being torn between everyone who is trying to get control of her and her mother left the building after she was ending the program and left totally the arena before she saw marks and, she demanded that she lived part time in the United States and worked with Frank Carroll and Sara Karwahara amoung many others considered to be the greats of coaching and followed the next season with a better quality and packaging Sara created her iconic vivaldi four seasons FREE skate and work on her stroking edges and improved 100 volts to win everything she entered and cut her hair and used Kristi Yamaguchi and most of the top level skaters costume designer Lauren scheean to create bright and Surya(esque) costumes and colors but she played the game better but like everyone who worked with her said as talented as she is they all wanted her not a few months out of the year but year around they bet everything that if they Frank Carroll imparticularlly having her all year to work all the kinks out her mom wouldn't have it thinking getting back to the jumping waa their only ticket so she
It was time for the current judges of Surya's performance to retire. The spectators should have been the judges. They watched her skating, lowest 5.7 because she fell and 5.9 for her jumps and artistic moves. 👍

Une des meilleures a son époque et encore maintenant. Malheureusement, elle a été souvent jugée sur sa couleur de peau que pour son programme artistique! Ah le racisme. Comme disait Alpha blondy d'une une chanson "tant que la couleur de peau aura de la signification comparé à ses yeux" voilà tout est résumé.
Surya's problem was that she always tried too much and tried to do things she couldn't do and as a consequence she often ruined her performances. Example - the triple toe/triple toe combo here - the second triple toe was two footed despite the first one being fine, secondly the quad toe was under-rotated and slightly 2 footed - I never saw her do a clean quad toe in all her amateur career, so why try something she couldn't do? Her artistry and style improved considerably as she got older and I think if she had kept her programmes to doing what she could actually do instead of attempting stuff she was nowhere near to landing cleanly, then I think she would have done better.
You could say the exact same thing about Ito & Harding for trying and landing the triple axel. I don't believe Surya attempting quads was a bad thing, I think it was a mighty try to at least attempt it and see if it landed. And Surya did landed multiple quads in practice sessions which has been documented but never in competition. You cannot fault someone for trying.
She landed 4T and 4S once in practice (or for that has been documented). However most of her 4S in practice had 3.75 revs so I’ll give it to her there.
Yes, there are, mostly representing the United States and France. People forget (or don’t know) that Debi Thomas was the first Black ladies world champion. And she defeated Katarina Witt, who was a judges favorite.
A very sloppy skate, have seen her do much better...still enjoyed her program though... she did 3 triple toes, totally illegal..a nice triple lutz at the end.

彼女は減点される理由が、ジャンプ前の長すぎる大袈裟な構えと、その時に演技が完全に止まっている事、ジャンプの変化にとんだ入り方が無い事、同じ黒人選手でも、デビ・トーマスの様なショーマンシップが無い事、etc.を自分で認めようとしなかったことが、自身の成長を妨げていたと思う。彼女は不当に点数を抑えられたという意見があるが、私はそうは思わない。

@@Danny-wy8kz さん、同意ありがとうございます。３０年くらい前、世界選手権のテレビを観て、かつてのジャネット・リンと難度は異なるものの、正反対のジャンプの入り方や、正反対のプログラム構成に驚いたものです。別の動画でもコメントしましたが、女子体操床運動のタンブリングで、音楽や流れを無視して跳馬をやっている様なものだと思いました。彼女のフリー演技は、ショーとしてのレベルは著しく低かったと思いました。今でも考えは変わりません。
自分もボナリー選手に関しては、おっしゃられている通りに感じます。
特にスケーティングに関して、丁寧さとかエッジがフラット気味で物足りないなというのを常に感じていました。
スケーティングもトゥで押して滑っているような感じもありましたし。
デビューの頃に比べたら、ボナリー選手なりに、色々進化はしていて、素敵なプログラムもたくさんあった選手って印象もあります。
衣装のセンスも良かったですし。
世界チャンピオンになれなかったから、余計に悲劇的な選手扱いされるけれど、ヨーロッパ選手権5連覇や世界選手権2位3回も素晴らしい成績だし、偉大な選手だったと思います(•‿•)
やはり、フィギュアスケートは、スケーティングが良くないと、見ていて物足りないです。
なので、ジャンプが無くてもスケーティングが綺麗なコンパルソリー時代の選手は魅力を感じる選手が個人的には多くいた印象もあります。
@@tadatada4098 さん、ご返信有難うございます。ボナリー選手は、スパイラルやステップからジャンプに入る事が無く、普通のランからばかりで、プログラムが単調なのが一番の問題だと感じていました。

First of all english judge Vanesa Riley with only 5.1 should have been expelled from judging
Surya's problem was that she always tried too much and tried to do things she couldn't do and as a consequence she often ruined her performances. Example - the triple toe/triple toe combo here - the second triple toe was two footed despite the first one being fine, secondly the quad toe was under-rotated and slightly 2 footed - I never saw her do a clean quad toe in all her amateur career, so why try something she couldn't do? Her artistry and style improved considerably as she got older and I think if she had kept her programmes to doing what she could actually do instead of attempting stuff she was nowhere near to landing cleanly, then I think she would have done better.
You could say the exact same thing about Ito & Harding for trying and landing the triple axel.
I don't believe Surya attempting quads was a bad thing, I think it was a mighty try to at least attempt it and see if it landed.
And Surya did landed multiple quads in practice sessions which has been documented but never in competition. You cannot fault someone for trying.
She landed 4T and 4S once in practice (or for that has been documented). However most of her 4S in practice had 3.75 revs so I’ll give it to her there.

Yes, there are, mostly representing the United States and France. People forget (or don’t know) that Debi Thomas was the first Black ladies world champion. And she defeated Katarina Witt, who was a judges favorite.

A very sloppy skate, have seen her do much better...still enjoyed her program though... she did 3 triple toes, totally illegal..a nice triple lutz at the end.
She was known for changing her choreography such as it was while she was skating.
