Melanin has NOTHING to do with it. Before Surya was Debi Thomas, a black woman who became World Champion and was beloved by the American and international public. She was the only woman who ever defeated Katarina Witt at a World Championships... and the judges made it that way. That's significant. After Surya came France's Vanessa James as a pairs skater and the judges and audiences tend to love her and she's been extremely successful with her partner. Beyond those amateur examples, Rory Flack Burghart made a splash on the pro scene in the 1990s as an unknown. Instead of burying her and never inviting her to competitions, she was there ALL THE DAMN TIME because audiences adored her even if she jumped like shit half the time. They all one thing in common: more improved grace, seamless choreography and a desire to give the judges what they were looking for from ALL COMPETITORS. Surya's problem was never EVER being black. It was because she wasn't doing the programs the skating community wanted and didn't listen to advice on how to advance. It was less about color and more about a group of people deciding what skating was supposed to look like. It was supposed to be pink dresses and endless Swan Lake. Surya wore leotards and never integrated balletic training into her programs. She was all muscle, jumps and back flips. Tonya Harding was in the same boat. Midori Ito. To an extent, Elaine Zayak. NONE of them were black but they all had one thing in common with Surya: they preferred to stress athleticism over grace. All of them paid for it at least twice in their careers. Her biggest problems here were the Triple Salchow as the solo jump and the fact that the judges felt her time had passed. She was jumping far below her standards at this point. A few pointed out there were likely deductions on things only a trained eye can see but are still verifiable: the spiral sequence being in an unapproved pattern (it DOES look strange) and a deduction for a spin without enough turns. The 4.9 for presentation is ugly because this held together better than most of her programs in terms of cohesiveness but some of those marks are very accurate.
