I'm trying to cut down on pre-orders, BUT... I made sure to pre-order this one. Gotta support those Silver Age collections!
As an aside, this also takes Daredevil directly to where Essential Daredevil Vol. 3 ended. Half-way there!

And here I am thinking I was one of the very few to appreciate the art of Gene Colan. When he drew Iron-Man, you could actually sense how ponderously Tony Stark moved in his armor. That was how the knights of old moved when wearing all that weight. Stark's armor hadn't yet evolved into the flexibility it has today. When he drew Daredevil, one noticed how he'd tilt his head at times during fights. Colan showed those subtleties. The fact that DD moved with such fluidity in fights that even Captain America couldn't detect his blindness was masterful artistry. Gene Colan also drew Dr. Strange, Captain America, Capt. Marvel and even a couple of Avengers ("Like a Death Ray from the Sky"). And yes, though I already have the Epics, I'm ordering the omnibus.

Gene Colan was one of the top 5 guys in the silver and Bronze Age.
Artistically Gene Colan’s Tomb of Dracula was the best Marvel series in the 70s.
And his Daredevil run is visually stunning.

It's so refreshing reading these old silver age Daredevil's, these days especially since the show came out it feels like everyone wants Daredevil to be just Frank Miller's version and I love that as much as the next guy, but I think this era deserves its due and is still a good version of the character.

Not the greatest DD stories but a must for me for the Colan art. One of the greats. Not sure why it is so small in comparison to vol 1. I wish they would make them larger to help assure we get all the early issues, I don't see a volume 5 DD selling.

    • @g-roy23
      @g-roy23 Год назад +3

Surely there’s just enough room for 2 more to link up to Miller?
Plus it’s probably smaller looking because of the paper, vol 1 is pretty oldish.

@@g-roy23 That's a good point, vol 1 does have thick paper but it also collects 1-42 plus 1 annual and other material so 45-ish issues. Vol 2 collects 33 issues. I think they made it smaller to make it a $100 book thinking silver age may sell more at that price point but at this size it will definetely be 3 more to reach Miller.

really glad you came to see the Colan light. I get he’s a tough sell to anyone who grew up with 90s art. But he could create atmosphere (and humour) at will, and with little regard for standard comic book realism. Amazing.

DD vol 1 was one of the first omni's i brought when i started in 2020.
It wasn't untill vol 2 was annouced i made an attempt to read and i only finished about 6 weeks ago. It was heavy going and i don't think the mike murdock plot line helped.
Now with Vol 2 coming my wayi am pleased to be getting it but also disappointed as it will now ge out of place due to different fo font and spine design.
Gene's art is like a fine wine and it improves with age as there hasnever been another person like him.
A nice review and i hope to see a vol 3 next year to celebrate DD 60th.

The main thing I don't get is why they didn't reprint Daredevil Vol 1 before/alongside this. Same goes for The Mighty Thor Vol 4 omnibus, when Vols 2 and 3 of that series haven't been printed in a good while either. I'd have figured they might be able to get more buyers that way.
It's especially odd considering that they're reprinting the whole run of Silver Age Avengers omnis from Vol 1 through to 4 later this year, with a new extra Vol 5 on the way too.
