This is one of my favorite runs of The Defenders! Steve Gerber was an awesome writer and greatly missed. I can’t wait to get my copy of this! 👍🏼

Comic book brilliance, Gerber was a genius and Sal Buscema's storytelling is so strong none of the weirdness ever gets confusing, top tier inker/finisher talent Klaus Janson comes on board and its perfection! I own it in single issue, part of it in Masterworks and will I be getting the omnibus?...you betcha...had it preordered as soon as the catalogue hit!

Got this a few days ago and have almost completed it. One of the best runs ever, couldn’t put it down! I originally read these stories in the UK Rampage Weekly in the 70’s, so nice to see them in colour

Nice - I also read them there and loved them - especially the issue when Valkyrie goes to jail

Man I only know a little of Steve Gerber's work but looove it dearly so I'm definitely keeping my eyes peeled for this. Either in some stray floppies or the thicc boi there

Looking forward to adding this to the Gerber shelf, should get my copy soon-ish. Now if only Marvel would release the 90's Foolkiller series in a trade or something...

Night Hawk's brain is by far one of the weirdest stories they put out at Marvel.

Stranger than "Nightcrawler's Small Intestine" from X-Men 236? I think not.

    • @jono3290
      @jono3290 Год назад +2

By X-Men 236 isn't Nightcrawler in Excalibur... so I suppose it was really strange they put that in X-Men, part of his mutant massacre recovery I guess.😆

But seriously, you have to read "Jarvis' Gall Bladder" from Avengers 167. It's a true classic.

Very happy to see this one released at last. Having read these stories in black and white in the Essential collections, it's great to see them in full colour. Embrace the weird stories of this period!

I just read Steve's chronologically-last scripts for Dr. Fate. It was decided in Countdown to Mystery (2008) #8
    *SPOILER*
one alternate ending resolves things with the Elf
killing the demon Negal. He leaves with the spirits of Steve, Howard the Duck, Bev, and other voices referenced. It was very nice.
These are among my all-time favorite comic book stories! Steve took what Adams and O'Neil were aiming for and wrote it into a more-integrated, multi-part story. Best portrayal of Yellowjacket ever, too. I didn't find these until well into adulthood. So good.

The reason for Elf with a Gun was to warn people of the dangers of having an Elf on the Shelf. We never listened.

I didn’t enjoy the weirdness of this Defenders series as a boy but I am now wondering whether I would enjoy reading it now as an adult. As always your great video has made me think seriously about picking this up. Nobody else is doing such insightful commentaries on books from the entire history of Marvel and I have bought and read a load of great stuff as a result of watching these videos.

I had some of those Defenders comics when they originally were published. When you were going through this Omnibus overview, I realized some of that art and story lines were familiar. I am pretty sure I had that story about Nighthawk's brain and maybe one or two issues from that story arc. I never bagged or boarded some of my very oldest comics and will be in the process of doing that soon. I am hoping I still have those Defenders issues amongst those old comics of mine. You are right, those Defenders stories from that era were wonderfully strange. I totally remember that panel with the furious Bambi. I have the Defender Vol 1 omnibus and am very excited to get volume 2, of which I pre-ordered the direct market cover. Thanks so much for the great overview, Omar.

I like those characters but the writer made the Defenders a "real team" which I hated.
Plus, they got rid of Dr. Strange and the Hulk.

The channel Comic Tropes did a fun video on The Defenders, on the weird characters and stories, the dialogue. Maybe this was one of the first times that The Hulk wasn't a brute. This video showed panels of "The Spanker" and "The Black Hole", and superheroes throwing the frisbee around.

RE: Elf with a Gun, the story I've heard in the past few years is that the artist asked to draw something other than heroes, at least for a few pages. Steve Gerber then just made up this character that was just representative of the chaos of life with no real story-line or purpose otherwise.

    • @trueorfalse2020

and then a later Defenders writer messed that story up. A writer who wrote the second best Defenders stories I've read

Nice overview Omar. I've ordered it. I could've sworn Steve Gerber's run was longer given the off the wall bonkers nature of some of the later issues ("Defender For A Day", Lunatik, Dollar Bill etc. run). Cheers

In the 1970s, The Defenders were called the greatest non team of all time according to Marvel Comics. BTW Steve Gerber did a wonderful run on The Defenders.

From what I’ve seen of the released standard edition cover Marvel have decided to remove the extra cover designs and fonts on the cover and are just using the base art and title, while keeping everything intact for the dm. Based on the images used during the announcements it seems that could be the case with at least the standard covers for Daredevil Vol 3 & Cap Vol 4.
Potentially another bizarre design choice by Marvel.

If they already had a Valkrie, then why do we need a female Thor? And NO, I DO NOT know what I am talking about. I don't know about Thor or Valkrie. I always thought Jack Kirby drew AMAZING Thor covers but really I was no more into Thor than I was into Conan. For the most part, I'm not a huge superhero fan. I like a solo superhero, say, the original Spiderman, etc. I like stories that build the character of one hero. Maybe ASM was an exception but I don't get into the TEAMS of heroes that much. How can you tell a story unless it goes back to each dumb character. If a writer had established that Spiderman acted a certain way, in another book that writer would be far less familiar with just how that character would talk. It's like, Steve Ditko couldn't quite jump right into telling a Man Thing Story or Werewolf By Night, and vice versa for those writers trying to write a Spidey story.
