2024 BMW i5 Electric M60 xDrive -- NEW 5 Series review

  • This could be the most compelling luxury car in Australia in 2024.
It's the new-generation G60 BMW 5 Series, and it comes with a petrol option in the base model 520i, or two electric versions -- the eDrive40e model, which is $40K dearer than the base petrol, or the model tested in this review, the immensely excellent M60 xDrive, which is a $215K AUD proposition.
That's a lot of money for a 5er, no doubt about it, but it has an all-wheel drive powertrain and a 0-100km/h time of just 3.8 seconds.
But more than just being fast, the new 5 Series from BMW is fun. And luxurious. And spacious. And high-tech. And safe. And gorgeous. And so many other things.
Watch the video and you'll see why I put what I did on the text of the thumbnail. This car doesn't disappoint.

NiceReview. But. Why do some people film themselves driving instead of the cockpit? You want to see the vehicle, don't you?

If your a car nut like me I reckon Matt has the best job in the world from reviewing the $25k Kia Picanto GT-Line to this gem, the $250k BMW 5 M60.
Only one problem, I can afford the former but not the latter.

New Taycan sounds even better hopefully no glossy piano black plastic that car makers still insist on using.

I really want to know how the iPad holders work for the back seats. It’s all and good that you expect parents with small children only want to know about small children car seat attachment. Well let me tell you about those of us with kids 8-12 years old or older: back seat entertainment runs supreme. The issue is, devices being hand held or on their laps… induces nausea and car sickness after 15 minutes. Exactly what you don’t want in a $200k car, on all that expensive upholstery. I’m not happy about cleaning vomit from the back seat of $40k cars. So I’m all about knowing how to attach devices to head height level of any car, especially when we start fantasising about owning a $200k luxury car. You want to raise children’s viewing level to head height to avoid car sickness, when it comes to car entertainment in the back, so mum and dad can enjoy the car with peace and quiet in the front seats. Bonus points if future cars you review, have the upgrade availability of entertainment screens - yessss!! Where are they all?!! I swear, car makers, or the bean-counters in Australia, don’t have kids that are out of car seats… kids that are a pain in the ass - especially siblings in the back seat - when they get a bit older, for car rides more than 10 freaking minutes. At least these BMW’s allow iPad stands which can be attached to the bars between the seat and the headrest… which is more than can be said for your alternative offer of Mercedes with their ergonomically pleasing but useless back of seat design…

Thanks for that detailed (and very visual, at times) comment.
You know you can buy attachments for the front-seat headrests that have iPad holders?

@therightcar haha, just pointing out, we want to know all the back seat joy besides babies and adults sitting in the back seat... how will our tweens be entertained in the back seat... in the back of the $200k BMW you're reviewing. Yes we know about the $50 ipad stands you can attach - we're looking that it can be attached, and how they can plug in their chargers... but if the car model has their own system - great, we'd like to know more about it. Just saying, for future reference for your reviews...

Does anyone buy sedans these days ? Especially one you have to recharge. Car Expert did a comparison between the ICE and EV 5 series Melbourne to Sydney . Any doubt, watch that before you buy the EV.

They did do that. And they didn't really do it from an even playing field.
