Tim Glenn Chicago, doobie brothers, the ides of march. The best bands use horns. He uses everything from all guitars including slide and steel, keys, real drums, horns, it’s awesome
Sturgil shreds the guitar to where even metal gods are jealous!! Angus Young Meets Kirk Hammett!! Absolutely Amazing Guitar Play!!! True definition of why the chicken crossed the road. .... To show that it could be done.
I have no idea why but... when I first heard this song, Black Crows "Hard to Handle" popped into my head. Go figure... great song though and I love the horns! 🎺🎷 I plan on listening to more of his music. 🎸
Kitty Vaughn black crowes didn't write hard to handle--but they sure did a hell of remake didn't they? Otis was responsible for the original composition
Otis also did Respect before Aretha took it. It originally was a song about having a woman giving some respect to her man when he gets home, but then got twisted into this girl power anthem. Funny how that works.
been listening to sturgill for about 2 years. but when this album came out, it turned in to one of my favorites. listened to the whole thing, all the way through, everyday for the last 4 months. genius album
I have lost my copy of this album, and just wanted to hear a bit of it today. I was thinking about those horns. What a fun performance. They were great on SNL supporting this one, too. Handle with caution, though - pretty sure this album was directly responsible for my first (and only) pregnancy at age 35! Thanks, Sturgill! Come to think, the copy of this album may be hidden away for good reason…
Cause he forgot the lyrics for a second. The line is "Don't let them try to upsell you." He started saying the first verse "Don't turn mailboxes into baseballs."
Don't turn mailboxes into baseballs Don't get busted selling at seventeen Those thoughts are absurd, to a dirty home Motoroil is motoroil Just keep the engine clean Keep your eyes on the prize Everything will be fine Long as you stay in school Stay off the hard stuff And keep between the lines Don't burn two lanterns at the same time No ship out on the water or the field we're in 'Cause you live and you learn Sometimes you get burned When you get out, done got up Walked out the door and went Do as I say Don't do as I've done It don't have to be Like a father, like a son Don't let them try to upsell you There's a reason they make chocolate and vanilla, too If there's any doubt, then there is no doubt The gut don't never lie And the only word you'll ever need to know in life is, why Keep your head out of the clouds And remember to be kind And just stay in school Stay off the drugs And keep between the lines
the audios excellent but I would probably fire ever who's directing the cameramen because you don't know shit from apple butter as far as telling them where to put the camera and when you missed so many opportunities to make the video as good as the audio.
Drunk Zombie I was a little turned off at first too. I was expecting more classic country. BUT... The more I listened the more I loved it. Call to Arms is one of my favorite songs of his. Probably second behind Long White Line.
He’s putting on the best show in 2024 out there….. JBS and his band are absolutely cooking again like this video
so glad to see someone bring back the horn section! A Salors Guide to earth is awesome!
Tim Glenn
I certainly damn well agree!!
bring the horn section back? ska never died :)
amen brother!

And I'm STILL Driving a BRONCO !
Cliff H but have you found a word to rhyme with Bronco, that's the real question!
Yes ,exactly
"bout time Sturgill got a big-boy guitar, fell of the edge of the earth, and made some truly memorable music.
Sturgill is very original and just plays what he likes. Love all his music
I forget how well Sturgill plays lead guitar!
SNL brought me here. Awesome music....wow
As he has done from the beginning, Sturgill telling the truth !
Heard this on WCLZ in Maine today. WOW! I love this groove.
Karla Morrill wclz is awesome!
This musician is indeed gifted.

Stay off the hard stuff and keep it between the lines
hard to handle, in some way. great! ;)
So good! Wish we could see the guitar player playing!
Jimi had his band of gypsys... Sturgill got his band of country-funkers.
Can't sweat the small stuff...

👌🏻
ready
Stay in school, stay off the hard stuff
like!
does he play songs from his other albums? gonna see him in November. .
Yeah he plays some from all his albums and finishes with this whole album.
Alex & Cassidy yup closes with a sailors guide to earth saw him last night
The old stuff with the added organ and horns are phenomenal. Then 'Sailor's Guide' in it's entirety...it's a show to remember for sure.
George Kinney yea and the bass player he had was amazing my only complaint is at my show they had the organ way down in the mix
delbert mclenton sound
Why did Sturgill pause at 2:38?
grenadeserenade he just does that. Longer pause on "You can have the crown"
grenadeserenade just something he does. Haha! I think we have to ask him..
Cause he forgot the lyrics for a second.
The line is "Don't let them try to upsell you."
He started saying the first verse "Don't turn mailboxes into baseballs."
Don't turn mailboxes into baseballs
Don't get busted selling at seventeen
Those thoughts are absurd, to a dirty home
Motoroil is motoroil
Just keep the engine clean
Keep your eyes on the prize
Everything will be fine
Long as you stay in school
Stay off the hard stuff
And keep between the lines
Don't burn two lanterns at the same time
No ship out on the water or the field we're in
'Cause you live and you learn
Sometimes you get burned
When you get out, done got up
Walked out the door and went
Do as I say
Don't do as I've done
It don't have to be
Like a father, like a son
Don't let them try to upsell you
There's a reason they make chocolate and vanilla, too
If there's any doubt, then there is no doubt
The gut don't never lie
And the only word you'll ever need to know in life is, why
Keep your head out of the clouds
And remember to be kind
And just stay in school
Stay off the drugs
And keep between the lines
Is this just a bunch of old sayings?
the audios excellent but I would probably fire ever who's directing the cameramen because you don't know shit from apple butter as far as telling them where to put the camera and when you missed so many opportunities to make the video as good as the audio.
Heard this & thought it was Joe Bonamassa at 1st
Steven Pryce Sounds nothing like JB
well that's my choice for 2016
Tony Joe white out here
- country + rock 😂
Syncopated call and response..vocals and guitar, opposing rythms
All Dam Nek spooks know.
Sax players get more nanny
I love Sturgill and these guys are all great players, but this and the new album is way too overdone I think. I find the horns distracting.
Drunk Zombie I was a little turned off at first too. I was expecting more classic country.
BUT... The more I listened the more I loved it. Call to Arms is one of my favorite songs of his. Probably second behind Long White Line.
It really grew on me. Give it a chance.
