I am the son of a hardworking, honest, and genuine black African immigrant. This song is far from the music either of us listen too. however I remember being a child and my father playing this jus a boy and his superhero literally at that time. i didn't understand the lyrics back then but as I get older and my pops gets older it just hits different. A lot of my friends didn't have their pops present, I was fortunate and owe that man that world for raising me from a boy to a man. I feel the words in this my heart.
WHY do you always have to put your race into. We don't give a damn what your race is. Music is music and music has no color. Y'all just st keep the race baiting going when y'all post race in it. No one cares, black isn't the only race out there, there's other races as well. Y'all ain't the only race.
My daddy passed away when I was 4 years old, so I missed out on a lot of life’s lessons from a daddy. I’ve always wanted to be a daddy’s girl and have a special bond with my daddy, I’m sure we had a special bond when he was living. I miss him so much!! But my great uncle and 2nd cousin taught me how to drive and taught me how to drive a stick shift. I have/had a great family, some have passed on and I cherish the ones that I still have with me.
Our oldest girl just passed away at age 49. She told me this song reminded her of me when I was teaching her to drive my old pickup truck. I will miss her very much.
This definitely strikes a nerve. Daddy died when I was 8. He was 41. I just turned 40. Oh gosh how I miss him. I wished I could show him his granddaughters. He would be so proud.
Look around man, we're here for you. Dad just teaches you how to access that in him, dont doubt its also 100% in others too. Love yourself, look within, reach down and pull up, but don't forget to ask for help, you need to. Dads are usually there to teach that. I'm so sorry you missed it. My dad wasn't near me, but not dead. Still not much of a strong effect. I missed out too. Got none of these experiences to show for my living father. Don't spend too much time in the past or the future. Remember to live right now.
I’m reminded of my father every time I hear this song. I’m a n*gga but on god this 🔥🔥🔥🔥😭😭😭😭😭. Real rap no cap Mr. Ricky Van Shelton. This the one sir fasho.
Dad's been gone for 33 years now, but remember him letting me drive as a young teenager and getting keys to the family car, before it was legal for me to drive, because he trusted me. When observing different things in life, he instilled a lot a lot of values of life and respect in me, that I'm so grateful for in this current world. Miss him so much.
This song brings back memories of my dad, too. He passed away in 2019. Today’s country is great, but there’s really something about the stuff that came out in the early 90’s.
I wish he would record some new material. What a great songwriter, recording artist and musician. My mom was a huge fan until she passed unexpectedly from a heart attack. Growing up I didn't wanna listen to this type of music, ROCK ONLY I said but now it all makes sense , reminds me of her and is beautiful.
My dad taught me how to drive a stick shift out on a diet road. And years later I was the one who taught my kids how to drive. Wish he could be hear to meet his grandkids. RIP Dad
This song speakes volumes to me as my DaD taught me how to drive at the age of 7. I lost him last year and I miss him dearly. Love you DAD and can hardly wait to see you again in heaven!
Too true. We certainly could use more of this beautiful uplift of the Spirit. I was a Daddy's girl many many moons ago. I didn't know him until he left the military after WW2. I was about 3 yrs old. When he picked me up at the station I cried loudly. He was a stranger abd people were looking. Mother slapped my leg to quiet me. But he said, 'no no she just doesn't know me'. From that moment, mother said I clung to him and became his shadow. It must have been his voice. I know a good one when I hear it Mr Van Shelton.
I was 43 when my only son of 3 children was born. That same year, my Mom and Pop passed away within two months of each other. I feel so blessed to have been their son, and to be my little boys dad (and my girls too of course)! With the exception of the “mommy being gone” part, this song is spot on! Brings back memories from when I was a kid, and puts into perspective just how important it is to truly take in every second we have with the ones we love.
We were were military family I felt alone. I built another family and I might alone after my TBI but my friends and sisters helped me out. DNA all isn't all about family, about the people that have your 6.
I love this song it's page out of my life even today this many years later it still brings me to tears. To me it's a spiritual song something that should be sang at church on fathers day for all the single dads.

I've had 2 lines of the lyrics stuck in my head the last few days. I had forgotten the rest and who sang it. I had to Google it and it all came back. I remember when this came out. One of my favorites. I did not have a patient teacher like the guy in the video, but I have a very patient Father in Heaven. Songs come back to tell us something or God uses them. Oh Ricky, I don't think you knew how powerful this song was going to be for so many people. Thank you.
I almost lost my Daddy in 2021. The doctor's had gave up on him and said it's time to say goodbye. I lost my Dad back on January 25th and this song reminds me of when I was a little boy when my dad learned me how to drive I was only 7 years old one of my greatest memories. LOVE YOU DAD!
I remember when my dad taught me how drive our ford I was scared but he was there keep me going and not be afraid. Many attempts I wanted to quit but keep pushing me encouraging me since then I started learning at the age of 16 -18 finally passed my driver license with a breeze. This song brings back some very very old memories. My dad taught me all about cars. The very first time I drove I wrecked my fathers brand new ford galaxie. It had a 390 in it and when I turned the corner I went to fast and lost control. Wow do I remember the trouble I was in not just with dad but also my neighbor that I hit. Then came the law man and the finally the judge. It was lot for 10 year old to take in. I learned my lesson folks. I really miss my dad. God gave Ricky a gift that truely is for the world to enjoy.
He who learns must suffer. And even in our sleep pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God.
My Daddy died when I was 11 my step dad taught me how to drive. I thank God for such a wonderful .2nd Dad. He was always there for use 3 kids and my Mom. They adopted a little girl who was a great sister. I love you Daddy and my 2nd Dad and my beautiful Mom. I felt so blessed to have had 3 great parents
My daddy was always our disciplinarian growing up. He regrets so much but he was everything we needed a kids. In 2001 him And I went to Denver. We haven been extremely close ever since.... He is the only man that ive ever needed... Love that man so dang much
for all of us that have lost our dads and step dads , these men shaped and encouraged our growth as we grew up. my dad was my hero though i never said the words to him i pray he knew by the way i looked at him on his last days . " dad , you were and always will be my hero " i love you
My dad said he used to pick with you a long time ago when he and my mom were still living in Virginia! I keep telling him to start playing guitar again... he's retired now, so no excuses! Great track
I'm almost 70 and I remember my dad teaching me to drive, it was1966....in a 63 Chevy Belair sedan. He was so patient with me. He sat up two 55 gallon drums for me to parallel park between.... gradually decreasing the distance till I had it down. He would be 111 TODAY...
Ive been taught by thee best....Even to this day im still learning from him...I sure ain't going to let him stop doing what he loves doing.....Thee bet teachers are our fathers....Love them while you have them.. ❤❤❤
This song...sigh...another favourite artist. I am not fickle my heart goes out to all the artists who made me smile, laugh and understood my tears....❤❤❤
I was very fortunate to have my father teach me how to drive. I learned in a 1980 Ford f-100 trying to parallel park that truck was frustrating. Even the guy at DMV got annoyed he finally just gave up and said just go u got the idea. He taught me well . I've been accident and ticket free for 25 years.

This song has gotten me through many difficult times in my life , I need to putt my favorite dog. Down , so its another page in my book of life .

Love this song as my "DAD" had me driving by the age of 7! I Love And Miss You Dad and can hardly wait to see you on the other side.
I love him and his work.
this song makes me cry every time
What a great repertoire👌
I'm almost 70 and I remember my dad teaching me to drive, it was1966....in a 63 Chevy Belair sedan. He was so patient with me. He sat up two 55 gallon drums for me to parallel park between.... gradually decreasing the distance till I had it down. He would be 111 TODAY...
My Daddy has been gone 20 years. I almost run into a pond when he was teaching me to drive 💜💛😻
From the highways to the heavens a promise to serve is beyond this world
Ive been taught by thee best....Even to this day im still learning from him...I sure ain't going to let him stop doing what he loves doing.....Thee bet teachers are our fathers....Love them while you have them..

This song hits my heart hard. My daddy passed away n it was a 5 speed truck we hopped are way home but we mad it 😢😢
