      A Gamer's Wife, In your video about axolotls you mentioned its hard to keep the water cold and I didn't understand the fan idea. Please elaborate on how to keep tanks cold.

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  6 лет назад +1

      There's several ways you can use to keep a tank cold. I used a small fan to blow across the aquarium water surface and wrapped the tank in reflective foil insulation, and it lowered the temperature by several degrees. You can also buy a chiller (or make your own) to cool the water. Good luck and check out this article for more details: www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cooling.shtml

      I use black canvas, inside the tank, held with suction cups. In the future I can also use it as a frame for growing moss or other creeping plant.

    I totally agree that excessive flaring is bad and these are good tips to reduce unwanted action, however i think that some flaring is good and even necessary for proper mental and emotional health of your betta. I personally use a small mirror to show my betta his own reflection every now and again in order to keep those "flexing" muscles strong. The key difference however is that when i use a mirror to play with my fish i am able to take the mirror away which simulates the "other fish" running away, this ends up acting like a little confidence booster to the fish by making him think he is so tough and scary looking that no other fish wants to mess with him. If your betta is suffering from "Betta Depression" and you have adressed all the common physical health issues only to have nothing work, he may be suffering from isolation depression. All living creatures are meant to have at least SOME interaction with other living creatures. I mean lock any living thing in a room all by its self for a year and im sure that poor critter will go insane. Since most bettas are kept in solitary confinement it is up to YOU as the owner to provide the interaction that all breathing animals need. I mean seriously whats the point of living if you are ALWAYS ALONE and TRAPT in your own toilet.

    I used black cardstock paper. I didn't think it was glossy but the flare is unending. I did destroy his bubble nest by accident when I had to readjust his heater and he's been extra crabby since. I am going to try the plant idea as it is the one corner especially that is freaking him out. He spends all of his time there. We tried blocking the sides but that didn't help either. The light is part of the lid so I don't think I can adjust that and the tank is directly beneath a high window and the light coming in streams sort of over the top of it due to the angle. It isn't hitting the tank directly. And the curtains are shut more often than not. (they aren't blackout so light does come through)
    UPDATED: I switched the cardstock background for a more matte construction paper. I also put a tall, leafy silk plant in the corner and we haven't had any flaring in hours. He is starting to explore the rest of his tank.

    This video may be over 2 years, but it was very helpful! My one betta, Valentino, is always flaring at his reflection in the morning, while is next door neighbor (my other betta Dante just chills XD) It's getting so bad, poor Valentino is getting caught in the filter current, yet he still goes after the "intruder." I have one of those shiny blue pet store backgrounds that I'll try swapping out with something else as it must be too shiny when the early morning light hits. XD I do have a large plant blocking most of the background along with the heater, but there must still be enough to catch the light in such a way that he can see his reflection. XD Thank you for the helpful tips! :D

      I researched extensively on aquariums and thought I had the beginner basics down, but for some reason I never saw anything about ‘cycling’ a tank. I bought a betta for my work office and have been doing very well taking care of that, so I thought I was ready to take care of one at home. The person I bought my betta from didn’t even inform me about cycling the tank, just told me to put my betta in there and wait a month before adding other fish, I didn’t know this was a very difficult and risky way to cycle a tank, and didn’t learn until my betta started acting off, and so I pulled him out in a panic and kept him in a small tank for two days.
      I just changed the filter last night as I noticed the current was too high for him (when he was in there), so the new filter has been running for about 24 hours. After two days in the smaller tank he seemed to get depressed, but I was able to get him to eat, so I just put him back in the large tank to see how he will do (I have two amano shrimp in the tank, and they have been doing perfectly well for two days, so I was hoping this was a good sign). All in all I have had the same water in the large tank for about four/five days.
      Anyway, while I have noticed he’s still flaring at the back of the tank that is still my main concern, but I’m hoping it possible some people with experience stop by they could help me.

    My Beta doesn't flare, he dances with his reflection. Then he will go away and go back to the "dance" at a later time. Not sure what is going on. It is more playful than aggressive or worrisome and he doesn't seem stressed. I am going to try some white plastic needlepoint mesh in the back and on the side of the tank that is reflecting and see how that works. He also likes hanging around where the filter water goes into the tank. It is a very gentle flow so not disturbing him. I really think he likes the feeling of the moving water. Stange little boy lol.

    I've had 4 bettas, and none of them had any issues with reflective glass until this most recent one. I got the tank second hand off of kijiji because I wanted to keep within a smaller budget. He's mostly glass surfing - not flaring so much, although I do see it happening occasionally. If he wasn't flaring I wouldn't be so concerned, but because he is, I have to assume he can see his reflection to some degree.
    How can I change the angle of the lighting to reduce the reflection? I hadn't thought to use a matter background, I'll have to try it. He won't do anything but chase the glass.. thinking of swapping him out with one of the other bettas to see if they have the same reaction in this tank or if it's just him.. I don't like seeing him stressed like this. He is eating, but he spends every waking hour surfing the glass. I tried putting a mirror in the tank to see how much his reaction differed, and he flared a lot more at the mirror than the glass but he spent maybe a few seconds doing this and then went and flared at the glass again, which pretty much confirms that hes seeing himself reflected.

    We just brought home a small male lunar flare Betta 3 days ago, and he still won't eat. We are feeding with Wardley Betta pellets with the red Betta on the label. Our Betta is blue. Does that matter? He did some flaring when we first introduced him to his tank, and now he just meanders around like he's depressed or something. His colour is fine, he's not tucking his fins. He just seems depressed... The tank is small. 0.7gal. He has 2 plants. It's one of those EZ Betta self cleaning tanks with a reservoir on the back. I had to change the water this morning because of all the food that just ended up sinking to the bottom and clouding the water. He had an accident when transferring him back into his tank after. He hopped onto the floor, so I'm sure he's stressed out at the moment. I don't want him to die. He's my 6yo son's fish, and the set up cost him all his savings.

    • @GirlTalksFish

      I'm sorry to hear that! Some betta fish are picky eaters, so you may have to try other foods. I like feeding Hikari betta food (amzn.to/2YIHtuz )because the pellets are high quality and small enough to eat. Frozen bloodworms from the local pet store are also a favorite.
      It also could be the tank and how often the water is being changed. Betta fish can be depressed if the water is dirty, and the water gets dirty faster in a smaller container vs. a bigger container. I haven't used this tank before, but Kasia from Creative Pet Keeping did a review video on it and noted some problems with it (ruclips.net/video/HwJQ7iJ3f-Q/видео.html ). A larger tank at least 3-5 gallons in size would be preferred, and until the tank grows enough beneficial bacteria, you might have to do daily water challenges to get rid of any uneaten food and fish waste.
      Sorry if that's a ton of information! I found it helpful to join a betta fish group on Facebook to learn more about their care and get answers from multiple people. Hope this helps and that your betta fish gets well soon!

      WaxyChipmunk85 YT ~ I know your post is a couple of years old, so maybe you've long ago found your answer. However, this was the first post I felt compelled to answer. ~ My own betta is something of a rescue (I'm the third keeper) but when I moved the poor little thing from its 3 gallon tank to a 10 so it had room to breathe... swim... and explore, the filter the tank came with was way too strong for it. My fish was whipped around the new tank mercilessly until I got a sponge filter. It was still so weak during recovery that it couldn't' eat the krill flakes I bought him -- previously one of his favorite foods -- until they sank out of sight. I decided to let him eat right from my fingers!
      I held my thumb and forefingers perfectly still, right above the surface of the water, and let him see what I had. He eyed it for a moment or two, then started jumping up to get the flakes out of my fingers! I felt his tiny teeth every time, but it didn't hurt at all. A mosquito bite is much worse. I had read in a number of places that with the difference in size taken into consideration, a betta fish's jaws are stronger than that of a great white shark, but he never latched on. He was more than happy to just grab the krill flakes and go. I don't think they bite at all.

    DO NOT USE ANY THING DARK .. (MALE ORCHID BETTA)
    I bought some LEDs that are blue and wrapped the tank making sure to put the LEDs at the corners or anywhere that it's dark that he can get a reflection from.
    The light from out outside of the take keeps the reflection away..🙏🏻
    I used a low light color- blue .. was considering a UV pink or purple.

      you should only keep the mirror around for short amount of time. If a Betta is constantly feeling threatened and flarring , it’ll turn into long term stress and that could lead to a short life and a very unhappy lil guy. Use the mirror as a toy rather than a permanent addition to the tank. Hope this helps!

    My tank is a triangular shape. The "reflective" sides are on the front of the tank. This is a big issue because my fish is constantly flaring and fighting with his reflection. Since the filter is on one side of the tank (the non-reflective surface), I don't know what to do about the issue without blocking all overall sight from my fish? Please help! Thank you and I really am concerned and unsure what to do.

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  5 лет назад +2

      Yikes, I've never owned a triangular tank, so I'm not sure what I would do besides block two sides of the tank and just leave the front panel facing you uncovered. Another thing that helps is putting the tank in a darker room that doesn't get a lot of bright sunlight. Worse to worse, you may have to consider getting another tank if he's flaring so much that he's injuring himself (which actually happened to me). Hope that helps; let me know what happens!
