This album came about because of the “Here come old flattop” line from “Come Together,” which John lifted from Chuck Berry’s “You Can’t Catch Me.” Lennon was sued and had to record three cover songs from rights owner Morris Levy’s catalog. Love this whole album!
The album was released in 1975. It should have been released in 1973, but the producer Phil Spector disappeared with the tapes and kept them for 18 months. He was at his most paranoid at this time. John Lennon was a really humble man. A friend of mine is the founder member of a Brazilian fanclub of The Beatles, called Revolution, that was found in the 60's. He met John in in NYC in 1980, he stood in front of Dakota building, and gave the brazilian version of the LP "A Hard Day's Night" to the gatekeeper, to give to John. On the other day he saw John and said: "Hi, I gave the LP to you". They chatted for, 10/15 minutes and John told that he would make a World Tour in 1981. After it, he also said: "When I come back from the tour, I will call the other 3, and let's see what we can do." He also asked him which Beatles song he liked the most. He said he didn't have a specific one. But he kept insisting. He said that the first Beatles song he had heard was "She Loves You". And he asked why: "No reason". After about 10, 15 days (John had the address card) a gold record of "She Loves You" arrived at the hotel with a note from Fred Seaman, John's secretary: "Marco, John asked me to send you this record because it will be better in your hands than in his."

A lot of the 60's British bands owe their careers to black American artists from the 50's and 60's that sang and played blues and R&B and jazz... including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Pink Floyd, etc... This version of ‘Stand By Me’ came out in the early to mid 70’s (not sure of the exact year) on Lennon’s solo album called ‘Rock and Roll’. It’s all of the songs that The Beatles, and The Silver Beatles before, The Quarrymen before them played when Lennon and rest of the lads were teens. So this was a very sentimental album for John.
Thanks a lot having reacted to this bewitching rendition of one of the greatest song ever. Love John's cover with its crazy arrangements due to the huge Phil Spector. On the same album with only covers, we can find "Sweet little sixteen" (Chuck Berry), "Peggy Sue"(Buddy Holly), "Be bop a lula"(Gene Vincent), "Ain't that a shame" (Fats Domino)" etc.

There's one more version of this great song you need to hear to complete your "Stand By Me" journey. It's put together by Playing For Change and combines performances by numerous artists around the world, starting with the unforgettable Grandpa Elliott. I guarantee that you'll love it.
Great song reaction you two! 😊 I had no idea that John Lennon did a cover for this song. This is one of my favorite Ben E. King songs. Another beautiful cover of this song that you both might enjoy, and that I highly recommend, is sung by the country music legend Mickey Gilley(RIP always). It's from the "Urban Cowboy" movie soundtrack. Also highly recommend that movie as well. Looking forward to the next music and movie reactions. 😊
I had the pleasure of seeing Julian Lennon's show at New York's Beacon Theater on April 9, 1985 and he performed a beautiful and emotional version of Stand By Me, just blocks from John and Yoko's home at the Dakota. God bless the life of John Lennon.
This song comes from what I consider one of Lennon's best post-Beatles albums. I bought it when it first came out, in vinyl, of course. If you want to top off Black History Month by learning a little about a treasured old school American artist - an original Woodstock performer - look up music by one of my idols: the late Richie Havens. He also covered a Beatles song or two, but his folk rock is truly iconic.
"Stand by Me" was written by Ben E. King. Jerry Leiber, and Mike Stoller. It was originally released by King in May 1961 and reached No. 4 on the Billboard R&B charts. The song, according to King, was inspired by Psalm 46.
Please consider reacting to John's first son, Julian, who's also a recording artist & gained a whirlwind of popularity in the mid 80s. His biggest hit made it to #5 in 1985 *Too Late For Goodbyes*
I love John Lennon, and I think he was a musical genius. I didn't care for this remake. I bought a tape of his songs that came out in 1986, which had this song. You really should listen to "Jealous Guy." That's the song I couldn't live without when it got some airplay back then.
Love this song and John Lennon 's voice, so it goes without saying that I love this version of the song. Thank you Jay and Amber for doing this reaction. There is a young woman named Skylar Grey who did a cover of Stand By Me, could you please do a reaction to it.
He sings the hell out of it and does it well. slippin and sliddin is a remake of johns that is an absolute blast and the video shows alot of his personality i love it
This made my day. Thank you! The Beatles always had great love and respect for black musicians dating back to their earliest days. They refused to perform in front of segregated audiences in the 1960s. John Lennon really makes this song his own. The original is probably the best version, but John’s version is pretty damn good. He once said “a good song is a good song. You can jazz it up, but if the song is there, it works”. I got one that I think you both will really love and it’s “Coming Up” by Paul McCartney. The song and video are great.
It's interesting that you did a U2 Joshua tree song and John Lennon stand by me on the same day. On the Joshua tree tour in 87-88 there was a few different ways that U2 would open the concert. One of them was to have John Lennon stand by me playing over the sound system and U2 would join in halfway through the song and finish as the opening song to the concert. I saw them do it this way and also saw them do it two other ways. The other two ways to was to open with where the streets have name and another was to have Jimi Hendrix Star spangled banner playing and they would open into bullet the blue sky off of Joshua tree.
This is from a whole album John made of just covers giving praise to the generations he grew up on and was inspired by. He also told the producer *cough* Phil Spector that he didn’t want to worry about writing music or putting the music together but just being a good ol rhythm guitarist and rock n roll singer.
One of my favorites Beatles songs is The Ballad of John and Yoko. If you have not heard it you should. There's a real experience for every line that John wrote. If you read up about their lives you'll know where it came from and why. But the song is also just really good with a great fun feeling.
This is from the late 73 thru late 74 sessions of what would become the John Lennon Rock N Roll album when he was separated from Yoko for 18 months and would be released in February of 1975 and was the last work he did before reuniting with Yoko and having Sean and went into a 6 year sabbatical from the business. Give a listen to outtakes from these sessions of John covering Angel Baby and The Ronnettes song Be My Baby. Be My Baby really pulls on your heart strings.
What makes Lennon’s cover so perfect is that he recorded it during a painful time in his life, the so-called Lost Weekend. Separated from Yoko, drinking/taking drugs heavily and apparently quite miserable, so you really hear the pain and emotion in the way he ‘screams’ the vocal - he means it, he wants help, be it from Yoko, his sort of girlfriend May Pang (weird relationship!) or love from the audience … as he wasn’t selling too well, either. You can also see his trademark defensive humour at play in the performance, taken from the British ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’ programme (he also did a great performance of Slippin’ and Slidin’) and his insecurities at the bum notes he hits singling, “tumble and fall”. Such a complicated man, so interesting and, not perfect, but my favourite artist ever!! ❤
Hi, guys. I LOVE watching the two of you react to music. Music is truly the one thing that brings people from different backgrounds together. It is the middle ground where we all can Come Together. Please react to the song "Valotte" by Julian Lennon, John's oldest son. I'd love to hear what you have to say about it. The first time I ever heard it was on the radio on way home after my daughter was born. It sent chills up my back. Love you guys, keep rockin' !
Hi Jay & Amber, I love this version of "Stand By Me" by John but you should know he has several versions you'll love as much or perhaps more. Look for them and enjoy them live in his Beatle days. Alway look for the live versions. Earlier today I caught your review of the Drifters doing Under the "Boardwalk". The lead singer was Clyde Mc Phatter on that version. The tie between John singing Stand By Me and the Drifters doing "Under the Boardwalk" is Ben E. King! He also sang lead for the Drifters at one point. Yes, two great singers singing Two great songs the Drifters did. They had many hits in the mid 50ty's to mid-sixties. "Upon the Roof", "Save the Last Dance or Me" and many others. They were singing in Atlantic City, New Jersey about that Famed Boardwalk. As I recall the Marker for that title song was on the beachside rail across from Tennesse Ave. The Atlantic City street layout was the basis of Monopoly, the Board Game by Parker Brothers Games of Salem, Massachusetts. You can walk from Mediterranean and Baltic to Park Place and Boardwalk on that famed stretch of beach or have a ride on one of the lover's trams. Simple two person carts that a healthy young person pushes for a small fee. The walk took me the entire sunny Saturday afternoon shortly after the 9 - 11 disaster. My wife wanted to gamble in the casinos instead of walking or riding. The Towers were still smoking and the F 16's came pissing along the beach twice at a low altitude, beautiful planes... The Amelas One
Looking forward to the day you two discover and present John Lennon's song "Mother". Probably the most tragic song ever made by John (or anybody else).
Great song. I played it over and over on December 9, 1980. Ben E King's and this version are IMO the two best of what is great Leiber/Stoller song. The Lennon version is on his 1975 "Rock and Roll" album which he did in order to comply with a settlement he reached for a copyright infringement lawsuit about a line Lennon wrote/sang in the Beatles' "Come Together" song.
This is from his album Rock’n’roll, featuring only covers of songs John loved. The album had a troubled path to completion, since the producer, Phil Spector, was in the midst of some sort of paranoid mental breakdown: At a late stage, he took the master tapes and refused to part with them. It wasn’t until much later that John was able to retrieve the tapes and finish the album. The irony of the video is John was dating May Pang at the time, during what he later referred to as his ”lost weekend”, but really wasn’t any different than any other relationship. (He and Yoko were separated: Yoko had thrown him out, which winded up being an 18 month pause in their marriage, between mid-1973 to early 1975).
John didn't make many remakes but he totally smashed this. His angst and passion just smack you right in the face. I miss him greatly but he will always be with us.

It’s all of the songs that The Beatles, and The Silver Beatles before, The Quarrymen before them played when Lennon and rest of the lads were teens. So this was a very sentimental album for John.
Ben E. King's original version of Stand By Me will blow you away! So smooth and easy.
Always liked the guitar riff that included "Oh my love, my darling"on the guitar solo .
John Lennon made an album called ROCKEN ROLL in 1975 where this tune ad many more oldies and goldies from Johns favoriter artists
Love this version!
I think this must be so comforting for Yoko to be able to watch this video whenever she wants to as it is such a testament to their love.
The engineer would double his vocals that's what gives him that echoey sound, so rad! His raspy voice is so Elvis Presley rock n roll sounding ❤❤❤ I'm glad you guys loved this reaction vids you'd to be silly for me but it's nice to see people hear it for the first time its like I can hear it for the first time. Everyone gives John shit but he really did love yoko ❤
Yes, John had a 1970s album named Rock and Roll . It was All Pre-Beatles 50s Oldies! Very Good Buy It ! 🤘🔥👍❤️
Beautiful boy is also a must with the video of him playing with his son on his john Lennon YT channel is so monumental. RIP John
There's one more version of this great song you need to hear to complete your "Stand By Me" journey. It's put together by Playing For Change and combines performances by numerous artists around the world, starting with the unforgettable Grandpa Elliott. I guarantee that you'll love it.
ALL WHITE CLOTHES, WHITE PIANO, WHITE ROLLS ROYCE!!❤🎹🎹🎤🎤🎸🎸🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶❤
Loving this from London ❤️
Great song reaction you two! 😊
I had no idea that John Lennon did a cover for this song.
The song Mother, while incredibly sad, also shows off the gritty side of Lennon's vocals.
Thank you for this one! This was my first time hearing John Lennon singing Stand By Me.
STARTING OVER WAS ONE OF JOHNS LAST SONGS 🎵 AND SO WORTH LISTENING TO AS ITS CLASSIC LENNON.
I love Ben E. King’s version. This was a very nice sound from Lennon. His videos are always so heartwarming. ❤
This was one of my favorite remakes by John Lennon he only did a few this was really good, take care y'all
Rock'n'roll, is a covers only album of songs liked and remembered from the 50s and 60s, and given john's rock style
"YOU CAN'T DO THAT" IS A FAVE AND A ROCKER!!
"Stand by Me" was written by Ben E. King. Jerry Leiber, and Mike Stoller. It was originally released by King in May 1961 and reached No. 4 on the Billboard R&B charts.
The song, according to King, was inspired by Psalm 46.
Jealous guy is another great song by the late great John Lennon ❤️👍🇬🇧
His first album after the Beatles broke up was "Rock and Roll'. It was dedicated to all the music that influenced him as a youth.
Please consider reacting to John's first son, Julian, who's also a recording artist & gained a whirlwind of popularity in the mid 80s. His biggest hit made it to #5 in 1985
*Too Late For Goodbyes*
One of the greatest covers ever made. Lennon took a classic and hit put his own stamp on it. Tremendous.
..POS Lennon was an admitted wife beater. he was a coward punk.
I love John Lennon, and I think he was a musical genius. I didn't care for this remake. I bought a tape of his songs that came out in 1986, which had this song. You really should listen to "Jealous Guy." That's the song I couldn't live without when it got some airplay back then.
Eff the woman beater. glad he got his karma on the sidewalk.
@@jokes881Wow !
Love this song and John Lennon 's voice, so it goes without saying that I love this version of the song. Thank you Jay and Amber for doing this reaction.
There is a young woman named Skylar Grey who did a cover of Stand By Me, could you please do a reaction to it.
D: Thank you. Without doubt one of my favourite songs. lol. you are welcome!!
Exquisite and powerful version by Mr John Lennon. 🙂
Regards from Chile.
I have always loved this cover.
He sings the hell out of it and does it well. slippin and sliddin is a remake of johns that is an absolute blast and the video shows alot of his personality i love it
Never heard this version from John Lennon. That’s a good song John did well bye it😊
Definitely worth hearing more John.
"JUST LIKE STARTING OVER" GOOD ONE!!😍😍😍
This made my day. Thank you! The Beatles always had great love and respect for black musicians dating back to their earliest days. They refused to perform in front of segregated audiences in the 1960s.
John Lennon really makes this song his own. The original is probably the best version, but John’s version is pretty damn good. He once said “a good song is a good song. You can jazz it up, but if the song is there, it works”.
I got one that I think you both will really love and it’s “Coming Up” by Paul McCartney. The song and video are great.
..POS Lennon was an admitted wife beater. he was a coward punk.
I never knew John Lennon covered this song and straight off the top I went to my playlist .
STARTING OVER WAS ONE OF JOHNS LAST 🎵 SONGS AND SO WORTH LISTENING TO AS ITS CLASSIC LENNON.
Love love love John Lennon, but Ben E. King's original is still the only version of this song that gives me chills.
Totally agree. It's Ben E. all the way with me too.
I admire any man . That isn't afraid to love a woman. That many don't like regardless of the reason. Yoko was his soul mate.
Hi Jay & Amber,
I love this version of "Stand By Me" by John but you should know he has several versions you'll love as much or perhaps more.
Sir Jay and Lady Amber, Thanks I haven't heard John rendition in years, the song was also covered by Otis Redding and Tracy Chapman.
You have to hear (John Lennon - Just Like Starting Over - Watching the Wheels - Whatever gets you thru the Night)
Yoko's sky certainly did tumble and fall, RIP John.
Lennon solo was always very raw. If he co-covered this with Macca it would be so much more produced and pop. I like both Lennon eras.
Happy 90th Birthday, Yoko
His songs Serve Yourself, John Sinclair, Mother and Isolation are all great songs. Jim
So, when are you two gonna watch The Beatles movie, "A Hard Days Night"??? 😁 John's personality, and sense of humor was hilarious!
Whatever anyone thinks of John & Yoko, those two loved each other.
His first wife, Cynthia, loved him, and got totally screwed over in the divorce. As did their son Julian.
..POS Lennon was an admitted wife beater. he was a coward punk.
He sure loved Yoko. I’m glad they found each other!💜
