Breaking free of generic constraints, Brooklyn and Chicago based duo LIES, craft explosive baroque-pop songs with a new wave punch. Cousins Mike and Nate Kinsella are no strangers to the world of music (American Football, midwest emo, ever heard of it??). In their new project LIES, the Kinsella cousins collaborate long distance, Nate in New York obsessing over the arrangements and Mike in Chicago, writing about the obsessive aspects of love and what happens when it breaks. Their session is alive with striking hooks nested in glorious composites of keyboard melodies and digital textures, powerhouse rhythms, sweeping strings, propulsive drums, and kaleidoscopic sequencers. Interviewed by resident Audiotree host Rita Lukea, the band opens up about the band’s beginnings, how they developed their sound, and what it's like creating music between two cities. I agree to Nate playing the drums standing up. And that swag too.

You get a glimpse here n there, but the uninitiated might not know they're watching two amazing drummers. Down with this Birthmark/Owen mashup, this was cool.

Not what I was expecting at all when I saw Mike Kinsella in the thumbnail lol. I was pleasantly surprised however!

Blemishes is such a fun tune! I love what Nate and Mike are doing. 😊

This feels like such a perfect dichotomy from two phenomenally talented musicians: the sheer beauty in joy (Nate's percussion), but also being grounded back to reality (Mike's lyrics/vocals). So much raw emotion it's beautiful.

Glad they’re highlighting Corbeau here. Love those odd time signature they did on many AF songs.

How the hell does Mike make jamming on nothing but a hi-hat so evocative?

Another video in which Nate looks super happy to be performing. I love seeing how much fun he has.
Does anyone else feel the hosting, or at least the writing, for these sessions has been off lately? The intro here sounds like it was written by someone who has no idea who these guys are, as was the case in the Smidley session where FINGY called Conor Murphy "Smidley", like she legitimately thought the band was named after him. I miss hosts like Blake, and the woman who did sessions with bands like Elephant Gym and Tricot. They were passionate, they knew their shit, and they talked to the bands. In comparison, these latest ones are fine (I haven't seen Psalm One, but this applies to the other two), it just really doesn't feel the same.

@@jerdyyy48 I believe you're right, Rita doesn't call them by their names, but she calls them maniacs for some reason. She also talks about how Audiotree discovered this "new and exciting talent", as if these guys haven't been making music professionally for nearly 25 years. I'll give her the benefit of a doubt and assume someone else wrote the intro, but whatever the case, it's way off the mark, and totally off brand for Audiotree.
I'll also add that she makes way too many comments in the interview sections, before clawing her way to questions that, while interesting, are too broad. There needs to be more prep.

they are so bright and interesting. and the interviewer feels like some obnoxious teen who has stumbled in and taken over.
