I love the "just throw some neg in there" while on top of a diving platform on a wide lens hahaha. Patrick is actually just a wizard, that's how his work looks so good.
I laughed really hard - thought the exact same thing. "Bring in the 100 foot crane!"
I learn more from these videos than I do in film school
“Show me a titan tube in the frame and I’ll show you the future”
Or any music video in 2018
Quasar vs Titan. 2018 vs 2019
My mind was literally blown. I'm a student in a film program and you taught more principles of lighting in 20 minutes than what I've gotten in 20 days. LOVE THIS! Subscribed and excited to hear more ideas.
get out of that program.* - not life advice but true
Super late but the Cinematographer is Kieran Fowler NZCS ACS. He's excellent.
time waits for no man.
Directed by Rob Stanton-Cook with a mad collaboration of strong cines - Joshua Lamont ACS, Alex Dufficy ACS, Kieran Fowler NZCS ACS and Earle Dresner ACS
@@dalealexanderbremneracs475 Thanks for the correction! What an awesome lineup.
Thanks so much for all these videos man. Would love to see a breakdown of Paul Meyers work like Grimbergen or ELKJØP.
ELKJØP! YES!
Thank you for making these videos. It has improved the quality of my work significantly. I went from a crappy DP to mediocre DP. One day with the help of your videos I aspire to one day be an average DP!
''Its propably signature primes and i haveve no idea what im talking about'' I dont know why i found this funny
I could use that tag after every sentence in these things
This was pretty awesome. I watch your stuff from all the way in Cape Town South Africa. I direct and DP here, thank you for always showing us the INSIDE.
Haven't watched yet, but there might be a typo in the title man! Thank you so much for sharing these. Love the format, and your approach.
i like these break downs - it gives me more to think about for future projects -
Thanks for your content, man! God Bless you!
Great tip on the heads above the horizon 👍
Great vid as always. FYI the diving board scene is a real location where I live on the Gold Coast, Australia. Probably shot around 8am.
mystery solved. Hive mind wins again
Love these breakdowns man. Just hearing your thought process is invaluable. I feel like I'm going to be hearing your voice in my head on set hahaha.
One day you have to breakdown a scene or a film, your videos are amazing
Every week over on Patreon. RUclips not a fan of showing films in vids
@@wanderingdp Make sense
From what I could find, this spot was shot by a group of cinematographers. Kieran Fowlers, Earle Dresner, Joshua Lamont, Alex Dufficy, Jordan Maddocks.
Basically the Avengers: Endgame of commercials.
Broo you should check out Resetcontent ! Those guys and girls are the best aswell!
Thanks for another great video! I don't have much experience with shooting open gate, so I really liked your explanation of how it affects the look.
There's a typo in the title
Just clicked on the video a second ago. You have a typo in the Title: "Alexa Mini LF: To Oprn Gate or Not to Open Gate - The Breakdown" -> "Oprn Gate"
Took me a second at the sun part, I thought "Wait that's not the direction the sun moves" I'll have to remember that's the case when crossing the equator !
Best channel, the content and the voice just makes it all flow into me brain.
It’s all about the voice
SOOO Great. Yes this looks very creamy I would agree! Thanks for all that great input!!! This BY FAR the best content on your channel: these breakdowns!
New levels of flippancy of tone achieved with the “being smushed in the face by the camera and being killed”. Love it. I thought 4:3 was a 2015 thing, what with Ida and then Cold War. I suppose that Lighthouse film was last year, so it figures that 4:3 comes into adverts after feature films.
Not a great look being smushed in the face
So much to learn from your breakdowns! Thanks for your work!
really really glad to see you growing so fast. just don't pass me and I'll be happy;) JK you need 1M by the weekend!
“Where are we gonna come with the lighting?” 👀 lmao
Family in the yard with grandma is well framed, I wonder if you could use like a nikon 105mm f1.4 to achieve something similar while stepping back a bit, albeit you would end up loosing some foreground elements.
That wouldn`t work due to the image compression of a lens that long. Sure the DOF would be very narrow as if it was filmed on a LF sensor but the image would be more compressed meaning foreground/background would feel much closer to the in focus area that it is in the shot you refer to. It has to be something wider, like 35mm as he said.
@@hkm2023 I agree, only if in that case maybe stepping back some and rearranging the foreground elements to fit a more compressed perspective.
Excellent video, appreciate you doing these!!!
Heyy..maybe you could let us see the whole commercial in your next videos so we know what we talking about how the story may affect the cinematography choices.
Your videos are great !
There is a show called "Better Call Saul" interesting lighting on that show for TV. That type of lighting wouldn't work for commercial work. Are you familiar? They use this same camera since season 3.
link to the commercial?
One of your best! thanks for all
I'm subscribed.
Rad channel! Thanks!! Out of curiosity, what camera/format did you shoot this interview setup on? And what was your key light setup? Thanks.
Oprn? Love your vids
I love your breakdowns but I think you might be imagining more lighting and production design than what’s really there... this seems pretty natural with good locations and a few kisses of key on faces. Maybe I’m wrong but these montage pieces move fast and it just doesn’t look like they set up that much gear... what do I know!
Looking like there isn’t gear is what a DP gets paid to do.
I wonder if the 4:3 trend is due to DPs wanting to use LF and not having a lot of lens options, they just cropped the framing to get rid of the black corners, the super35 lenses were causing?
I’d put money on no.
No shortage of lenses at this level
yo will you ever do film cinematography breakdowns? i'd love to see some kubrick breakdowns!! :)
Over on Patreon every week
where we can find the original video ?
Love your work. Would you consider breaking down feature film sequences?
Every week over on Patreon
damn these videos are about to change my life
just checking to see how your new life is going?
So, the Open Gate mode on an ARRI Alexa is basically 1.33:1?
I LIVE 5 MINS DOWN THE ROAD FROM THE DIVING BOARD LOCATION.!
@8:50 Get it? Depth of field!
can you post links of the commercials
DUDE how do you stream and write on the screen at the same time. I've been trying to do it myself for some other stuff and idk how to
Hi, I know this is off-topic... but how do you add your graphics tablet as an overlay as you talk about this topic?
Thanks for the video and great break down! I'm learning from these vids. I was thinking of that scene outdoor by the pool. Overexposing makes color and contrast more creamy but sacrificing then specular highlights , don't you think its that simple? It works with photo cameras which I use foremost.
No
Mercedes Benz - In the long run! :) check it out
Hello harshness my old friend lol
Could be Mamiya Sekor C’s?
Oprn gate is good but I prefer Open gate personally
I need those footage
What app do you use for your storyboard in the frame work tutorials??
Off topic but where did you get that tshirt? It’s my color
I watched this and still don't have an answer whether to shoot open gate or not.
Kieran Fowler was the dop
How are you going to get the diving platform to look that black, looks fake to me!
does anybody know of the link to this commercial?
Hey mate really enjoyed your videos. The obviously very knowledgeable but what’s up with all the clicking and popping in the audio?
Patrick is using his graphics tablet to draw on the image to illustrate as he is talking through it.
My kick ass COD keyboard has its drawbacks
@@wanderingdp Haha. Unfortunately It’s actually audio clipping.
@@lukekenny3242 Ha. definitely no audio clipping
What’s the name of the AD
5:35 youre saying throw some neg in there, but how to neg that on such a wide shot?
Some people’s sandboxes are bigger than yours
depth of "field" lol
glad I'm not the only one who caught that lol
Panavision H series Lenses on this job :)
pretty sure this work is from Josh Lamont btw
The one person who disliked this video is just upset he hasn't changed the typo in the title
I sense a k35 or FD vibe. definitely not leica R or signature prime
Panavision H series for this one :)
Pls what screen recorder do you use and how do you draw over you videos?
Looks like DaVinci Resolve.
@@shadowshapers Davinci won't allow you draw all over your screen, has to be his screen recorder or an app that allows it. Looks like he doesn't won't to tell
Why is the sun moving from the right to the left... 🤔 oh hold on, other side of the world 😅 In 15 years of freelance work I never had to deal with that. But of course, for international working DPs it's a thing to keep in mind on which side of the world they just woke up. I just blew my own mind 😂
*open :)
Your title has an error.
or do your eyes hvae an air?
Check out an ad from Lobos 1707
Hexes on the bot that disliked
Apparently a colab between five DP's. Accidentally stumbled upon Kieran Fowlers IG: instagram.com/p/CGpM85ahGOZ/
Is the title supposed to say "Oprn" or was that a fat figure?
