It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, it put Sigourney Weaver on the map, it made $200 million dollars against an $11 million dollar budget, it spawned 3 Sequels, 2 spinoff films, 2 crossover films, video games, comics, novels, toys, board games, novelizations, and an upcoming live action TV series.

I saw this upon its release in 1979 and it has always remained my number 1 sci-fi movie of all time (I think maybe a majority would prefer the sequel Aliens but for me this just has the edge) great reaction. Always a pleasure to see youngsters like you when they experience art like this for the first time.

    • @unstrung65
      @unstrung65 2 года назад +1

You are exactly right - 'Alien' was 'art' compared to 'Aliens' , the music , the creature , the sets and direction by Ridley Scott , and it was the first movie of it's type ( patterned after the 'B' monster movies of the 50's which I grew up loving ) The writers borrowed from them quite a bit , especially ' It! The Terror from Beyond Space ' for the Dallas scenes where he goes into the duct system of the ship . 'Aliens' will always be the more popular movie with the masses with the non-stop thrills and 'cartoon' like soldiers , it was a well done 'popcorn' movie , a roller coaster ride . I'm not knocking it , Cameron did a very good job with it . But , I did see Alien in the theaters when it came out and see it as a 'classic'

Lambert is not a coward. She is us. She represents the audience and yes, she’s scared and out of her depth but who wouldn’t be? No one has ever seen this creature before and it’s terrifying. People like Ripley are the hero who have what it takes to survive but that’s what makes her special (ala, “Hero”). Lambert is all of the rest of us in the presence of such dreadful horror, as the Alien represents. Don’t be too hard on her.

    • @APixieNinja
      @APixieNinja 2 года назад

Lambert is the kind of person who gets people killed because they panic and fail to keep composure. They get people hurt and or killed. There is 1 in every group of "friends".

    • @aldunlop4622

Lambert’s terror is still the best, most authentic acting I’ve ever seen about someone in this situation.

Having a cat on a ship is an old naval tradition.
At the time of the sailboat, we took a cat on board to hunt the rodents which ate the shipments of goods.
In this film, truckers make deliveries. That's also why they're not very good at exploring or containment.
Parker says it's not their job to be lifeguards.

    • @NefariousKoel
      @NefariousKoel 2 года назад

Came looking for this. Old naval solution for a possible problem.
If pests stow away on a long voyage, they'll quickly multiply, eat your supplies, and in the case of rodents chew into stuff like shielded wiring. Good to keep a mouser-cat around to hunt them down. Poisoning the rodents and such would result with their corpses stinking up the place, and having to bait, trap, and discard their bodies sucks. Cats just gobble much of them down.. easy disposal.

One day humanity will be extinct but cats will have been exported to every habitable planet in the galaxy. An enigma to later species.

Shining and Exorcist are indeed classic. For another amazing classic, watch The Thing if you haven't already seen it (Some of the best practical effects ever). And for a worthy, more "contemporary" horror film, watch Hereditary, and The VVitch. They're...different kinds of "horror" where there are no jump scares, but you just feel uneasy and what might be shown on the screen.

An absolute masterpiece of a movie. It's such a simple concept, a haunted house in space, but the performances, direction and designs elevate it to much more than the original concept.

I was born in 73 in Rahway, NJ a block over from the train tracks to Elizabeth, Newark, NYC. We used to play on those tracks and collect loose railroad spikes. We rode our bikes (no helmets or safety pads) alone to the Park and cross a MAJOR 4 lane highway. We had skateboards, and roller skates that you wished you did not hit a rock on the street or the wheels stopped while you flew. KFC was Kentucky Fried Chicken that was just chicken/ biscuits/ slaw/ smashed taters. Chicken McNuggets were the discarded pieces of REAL chicken held together by the proximity of frying them close together. We built ramps to jump on the bikes. Wall and stick ball. I went to the hospital soooooo many times from being injured. My father had a van and I was sitting in the middle row when a guy from the other direction ran the stoplight. My father slammed on the brakes and I flew up front because I was small. JAWS is rated PG but I saw allllllllll movies in a theater there. Not a multiplex but an actual theater with a curtain and balconies. I saw any movie until 1982 there. Jaws, Alien, The Thing, Star Wars, Scanners, The Shining, The Blob, etc etc. It didn't matter what your age was, as long as you had the money you got in the theater. We were outside doing whatever until the street lights came on. Then we checked in with our parents and could go back out but STAY ON THE STREET!!! We had rock fights (yes... rock fights). Our fights were one on one and didn't involve guns. Knives/ switchers were a little later. Neighbors were allowed to spank bad kids. We didn't have cable TV until 1981 and only had 4 channels; 2,4,7 and 5 before it was FOX. We got roughed up, we got bloodied up. We were allowed to watch pretty much whatever. AND I was a Jehovah's Witness back then and they can't do pretty much anything. I lived about a mile away from Rahway St. Prison (the original Scared Straight was from there). When we heard the prison warning sirens we got inside the house. Times changed, kids are waaaaay more flexible and continue on. It doesn't matter if it's 1978 or 2022. We used to climb the neighborhood pine tree to see who got the highest before they fell back to the ground. Of course you hit all the limbs/ branches on the way down and it softened the fall. I'm not saying it was better or worse than now. It was a lot more dangerous though. I think parents are waaaaaaaaaay too protective now. Let the kids live and because they will eventually lets all of the held back intuitions out!

    1. Ripley says to Parker, "You'll get what's coming to you." is prophetic.
    2. There's a COC in the civilian world too. Cooperation wanted access to the Alien.
That becomes more clear in the second one.
    3. Dallas/Tom Skerritt also played in "Top Gun" as Viper and "Up in Smoke" as Strawberry to name a couple.
    4. Harry Dean Stanton(RIP) also was in "Up in Smoke" in a jail scene with the guys but it ended up on the cutting room floor. A great movie with him is "Escape from New York".
    5. The hanging bodies at the end weren't not in the original release.
    6. The exploding freighter is the biggest one I've ever seen😶
    7. The tag line for this movie is, "In Space, no one can hear you scream"😱
    8. Now that you're in this universe you MUST do Aliens next. (More action packed)

I like reactions a lot, it's like re-experiencing the first time I watched some of these iconic movies. Which is great. And for some reason I really like a lot her reactions. At first I thought she was lying, like, nobody could be so sweet and airheaded. She pretended like she didn't watch those movies... so I thought. I changed my mind, I think she is genuine. Nobody is such a great actor. And she is not airheaded at all, that's just the first impression due to the humble way she expresses, without pretensions, and the soft tone she applies.
I really like her insights and humor. Who would have said. I am hooked. We really shouldn't judge people too soon.

Hating the crew members for not listening to Ripley doesn't make sense.
Dallas is the captain. HE is the boss, not Ripley. It's not his job to listen to her. At most, he considers her advice then gives his orders.
Kane is second in command. It's not his job to listen to her. At most, he considers her advice then gives his orders when Dallas isn't around.
Ash is a robot with his own programmed orders. Even if he was a human, he's in charge of the science department and regarding science, he's the boss and even Dallas can't tell him what to do.
Ripley is next in command, a junior warrant officer.
Parker and Brett are mechanics. They have to follow Ripley's orders when Dallas and Kane aren't around, but they are the ships mechanics and she is not, so she can't exactly tell them how to do their job - but she can order them to do it.
Lambert is the navigator. Ripley can give her orders when Dallas and Kane aren't around.
To sum that up, Dallas, Kane, and Ash didn't have to listen to Ripley at all. It was literally their job to NOT listen to her.
Dallas and Kane left the ship so Ripley was in charge until they got back. As far as we know, Parker and Brett followed her orders and Ash didn't have to.
Then Dallas and Kane came back on board and Ripley wasn't in charge anymore.
Literally NOBODY needed to listen to her while Dallas was in charge.
Kane died, then Brett, then Dallas.
    Finally, Ripley became the Boss.
    And you know what?
Parker and Lambert started following her orders, at least for a little while until they died too.
Ash, of course, did not, but we know why.

While I agree with you about the Lambert character. She was far from useless. In fact imo she was actually the most important crewmember on the ship. My biggest problem with their landing party was that it included her. Because she was the ships navigator. Which would be an even more important job on a spacecraft than it is a on a naval vessel. Outside of this a pretty good reaction. Keep it up.

Ripley does a few dumb things as well. She split up her team, against capt. Dallas's orders, not once but twice, and lost people both times. Even if ash hadn't opened the hatch and let in the away team,24 hours for decon wouldn't have been enough. Cain still would have more than likely given birth to his space baby on board the ship.

I don't call most modern horror movies "horror" anyway. I call them "startler movies" because all they do is startle with sudden and loud jumpscares. Cheap, cheap tricks that only annoy me. Nowadays when i see a horror movie and i see two cheap jump scares i immediately bail out. I just lose interest.

They’re all idiots? Nah… Dallas was the kind of captain who doesn’t always go by the book… and in many movies and shows we love that kind of captain, don’t we? If this were a different story we could be led to feel for his instinct to help Kane, gambling as he did that it would turn out okay.
And It was really just Ash that made the mistake… only it wasn’t a mistake … he had his orders. And he had the final say on bringing the organism back, too. So, we see that following the company line can sometimes be good, sometimes bad. We can sense which it is but we know things they don’t. And Lambert is a highly skilled member of the crew who belongs there… it’s just she’s out of her depth having to face this monstrosity. Not everyone can rise to be a hero; you’ll always get a range of reactions from any group of individuals.

You keep calling everybody in this movie idiots, except Ripley.
You use the word "Idiot" over and over.
That's not fair to them or to this movie because it's not true.
Most typical horror movies have people who die because they make bad or stupid decisions.
The monsters or psychos kill them because they are idiots.
    That's easy.
The writer can't figure out how to kill smart people so they make the characters stupid instead.
Alien is much better than that.
In fact, it's why Alien is an all-time classic, not just a great horror movie but a great movie.
Nobody in this movie is an idiot except maybe Lambert who gets Dallas and Parker killed because she panics and freezes.
    One idiot on the crew.
The rest are smart and competent and mostly make good decisions.
Remember that they HAD to investigate that ship. They are not idiots for doing that.
Dallas and Lambert insisted on coming in because they didn't want to see their friend die outside. They assumed their chances were better on the ship than outside in the hurricane. And they were right.
Ash opened the door because he's a robot programmed to do that.
Brett died because he was (correctly) not afraid of a tiny alien the size of a large rat. It's literally impossible for a creature to grow that big in just a few hours especially with no food.
Dallas died because he took all the risk in a plan that was the best they had and Lambert panicked instead of guiding him to safety.
Ash did exactly what he's programmed to do.
Parker died trying to save Lambert who was frozen in panic.
    Lambert died frozen in panic.
Other than Lambert being so panicky, these guys did the best they could with what they had and none of them were idiots.
They mainly died because of an impossible monster that can only exist in a horror movie AND a robot secretly working against them.
And that's what makes this movie awesome.
The monster wins even though the humans didn't make stupid decisions or behave like idiots.
Good writing produced a timeless classic.

Hi, Olavity and fans... Can you all do me a favor and nominate BE KIND REWIND (2007) for a reaction? I can't contribute these days, but it would greatly cheer me up to watch you react to this AMAZING film. It is highly original and off-the-radar, and you will be crazy about it. You could introduce a great film to many new fans and reactors ...! Thank you very much! I sure do love your channel... !

Hello, "Oliver the Cat." A Horror fan/cat lover is boarding the "Nostromo." What will she make of this "old, long, slow-moving, no-DFX" movie? Bad memory? A pencil and paper works wonders! What do YOU make of: "In space, no one can hear you scream"? In 1979, it was a puzzle for movie goers. Hmm, playing "Alien Isolation" before seeing the movie is an interesting starting point. Watching "Alien" (1979) at night is NOT advised. The Company is sending the equivalent of a freighter crew to King Kong island to check out a radio signal! 32:15 This was my "WTF? Ash ISN'T Human!?" moment. 33:14 NOBODY saw this coming, then or now. 42:41 Tonight's dinner entree on the shuttle "Narcissus" in Steam Xenomorph in it's Shell. 43:15 Correction, Char-Broiled Xenomorph.

Most scary movie I have ever seen.. Girl you Talk Too MUCH!...I think you missed some of the Key information. The little description of the ""Nostormo...crew of 7 Returning to Earth.."" didnt pic up something weird about Ash when he did the 5 second sprint before sitting at the counsel? You also missed the computer screen when Ripley typed it in ...SPECIAL ORDER xxx..CREW EXPENDABLE...so the "Company" already knew about it.. ALOENS will pick up from here.
Oh some movie trivia. Veronica Cartwright , Lambert, was originally hired to be the lead actoress, but at the last second, Director replaced her with Weaver. Actually they are lucky she didn't quit. Oh btw i Hate cats , Haha

H R Giger was the artist behind "the Alien" creature. It was inspired by nightmares that he would sketch out upon waking.
Matthew 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
AND YOU THINK THIS IS JUST A MOVIE ?
Revelation 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
REMEMBER THE SCENE WITH DALLAS SAYING "KILL ME"?
6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.
8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.
9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
