I watched this in '79 in an almost empty cinema one afternoon. Back in the day there was no social media to spoil anything, and they had done a great job promoting by teasing without really revealing anything. Sitting in the dark alone, the atmosphere was fantastic. A cinematic experience that has yet to be rivalled for me.
My dad saw it while stationed in Germany and said that culturally they weren't ready for the chestburster scene, definitely a different cinematic atmosphere for what they were accustomed to at the time over there
My dad took me to see Alien in the movie theater, I was 7. Scared the shit out of me. In the early 80s my dad had a laser disk video player and he had Star Wars. I’m surprised I didn’t burn the motor out of the laser disk player.
Seeing this in the Summer of 79', as a 14 year old fresh out of Star Wars and Close Encounters, this movie was super disturbing. It turned the tables on my view of sci-fi.
Alien and Aliens are in my top 10 movies. This scared me as a kid watching it. The "birth" scene gave me nightmares for weeks. I was 5 the first time I saw this and I had my uncles movies I could watch whenever I wanted.
i remember when i used to have friends we would go to the movies and stand in the parking lot talking about them for hours and hours now i have no friends but if i did the movies today just aren't worth talking about great commentary and re review
@@blabbercast thanks its not like you turned my friends into a bunch of asshats.....or did you? i really enjoyed the free form of your videos allot of channels talk like it is a movie review yours are like friends talking after a great movie i caught myself chiming in a couple of times. Great watch.
@@charlesmarkovetz9161 We did turn them into A-holes! Cue Vince McMahon "It was me all along! " Appreciate the kind words! We try to keep it free flow and not an exposition dump. Glad to hear the style is appreciated!
Speaking of Giger and his art, he did Danzig’s “How the Gods Kill” cover art, as well as his art being responsible for the old “Explicit Warning” stickers music albums used to have on them. The Dead Kennedys included a poster of his “Landscape XX” in their “Frankenchrist” album. (It’s a landscape of penises entering assholes.) This caused Tipper Gore to get her panties in a bunch, so the band was brought up on federal obscenity charges. And if you haven’t seen it, check out Mario Bava’s classic “Planet of the Vampires.” When I saw it, I immediately thought, “Alright, Scott certainly seen this before.” The planet’s landscape is very similar to that here.
Then you missed out on the lack of "Regions." The Laserdiscs that I saw/handled/bought from wherever they were made could be played without a hitch. Due to the way the system worked, "Copy Protection" such as Macrovision couldn't be used. They are bulky, CAV = 30 minutes/side; CLV = 60 minutes/side @ 250 lines that made VHS look fuzzy. I bought the Special Edition of "Aliens" (1986) and saw stuff that hadn't been on the theatrical version or VHS. I also have "Northern Exposure" episodes with the original soundtrack! Too bad "Birds of Prey" (1973) wasn't available on Laserdisc with the original 1940's soundtrack. ruclips.net/video/xYQoSlHDN48/видео.html
i actually get annoyed when people heap all the praise for alien on ridley scott, while shortchanging dan o'bannon, ron shussett, ron cobb, möbius, hr giger, and so on. scott *only* directed. in fact, on nearly all of his films, that's all he does. that's important, yes, but he didn't write it, didn't design the nostromo or the xenomorph. edit: what the hell are you talking about, 'if they were real and not cgi'? there's no cg in alien.
Well said. We missed a few of those actually. There are so many others that deserve credit for things this massive in scale. All due respect to Scott, of course, but so many people put in a LOT of work! Thanks for the comment and hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for your time!
Unless the director has the vision of a Hitchcock or Kubrick, it's all down to the quality of the screenplay writers/re-writers. Making a slightly upgraded Bender Bending Rodriguez the destroyer of Homo sapiens instead of taking us to the Alien home world is/was a mistake/waste of money/talent/film.
"Alien is a bitch to Google search" It kills me a little inside every time I have to use the word "xenomorph" to search for it, but, alas, it is what works.
The first two they were awesome everything was on point when Ridley Scott decided to create Prometheus and Covenant that's where he f***** up, he should have never done that, the first thing we saw in that movie was that monster killing everyone,it traumatized the soul out of us like , I was traumatized for years thinking that thing might exist in this universe when he broke that for the famous "AI" everybody lost complete interest
Studio's flash that cash and then they are off for better or worse, mostly worse, sadly. Thanks for the comment Poli and your time to view the video! 100% agree, makes me wonder what lurks out there far beyond.

You're lucky. I hope they do a re-release in theaters. That would be an awesome experience. Appreciate your comments!

I feel yer I had the same experience watching Mr Poppers Penguins and Flubber.
HUGE fan of Alien and Aliens. There are a few Original audio Dramas on Audible continuing the Alien saga.

You sure as hell tried to burn that motor out! LOL! Nice!

I watched Aliens first. What wowed me was the Space Jocky. That's when I got into Giger. His work has had a large influence on mine.
Awe inspiring for sure. Where is your work? Love to check it out if it is based on Giger!
Great video. And Alien still the best of its genre. Thank you :)
Our pleasure! Thanks for the time to listen to us babble!

Adding that to my list! Awesome factoids there as well! Thanks!
Looking forward to Alien's and the rest of the franchise!
Seriously enjoyed all the insight behind this movie though!!

my favorite movie of all time is 2001. but this one is close!
You got fine taste!
All credit goes to Master Giger .
