  • Don’t believe the hype. There is a way to de-dramatize social justice.
In fact, IMHO this is essential in our efforts to create a better world.
Systemic oppression benefits from us constantly being at each other’s throats.
Systemic oppression benefits from us accepting simple narratives of “good guys” (our saviors) & “bad guys” (our skapegoats).
Systemic oppression benefits from keeping us trapped in the drama triangle, pointing fingers at one another versus at THE BROADER SOCIOCULTURAL TOXIC STEW in which ALL of us swim (live, eat, & breathe).
Part of taking our power BACK from oppression is stepping outside of the socially-orchestrated political drama. As Rumi said, “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there.”
Part of creating the world we want to live in is buildling the muscle of humanization. And when I say “humanization,” I mean ALL humans.***
***IMPORTANT CONTEXTUAL NOTE: Humanizing humans does NOT negate accountability, NOR does it excuse or justify injustice/violence/cruelty. In fact, I would argue that humanization is a REQUIREMENT of accountability. We can punish without humanizing (AKA mass incarceration), but I don’t believe we can truly hold someone accountable without centering their humanity.
(Lovingly recorded for social work students taking my Institutional Oppression course...and all of you beautiful souls♥️)

At the macro level "understanding" is not being sought by those carrying out mass murder. The framing around the word victim, as if it inherently is obfuscating truth or undermining people who are legitimately victims of injustice, is itself a tool of oppression built and maintained by the ruling class to undermine the unity that might otherwise create uprisings. Calling this dynamic "drama" is another form of that. Sure, there are examples of office meetings in which things become misunderstood. But there is a real win/lose dynamic in the world playing out right now of literal life and death that cannot be shoehorned into this. Doing so further dehumanizes the people who've been dying every day for the last century (and longer) who are deliberately, systematically deprived of the resources that would otherwise undergird their autonomy.

I really hear that. There is absolutely WAY more complexity to this than can be explored in a single RUclips video. I am 100% coming from a U.S. perspective (as that's the culture I come from) & social work paradigm (as that's my professional underpinning). The drama triangle was created by a white man also coming from a perspective limited to the U.S. & our medical industrial complex. I don't know what it would be like to live in a part of the world where mass murder was my everyday reality, and I don't know that I would have these views if that were something I lived & observed.
I created & shared this video because I do find value & importance in the practice of humanizing all humans, AND I completely understand that not everyone will agree with that. I appreciate you taking the time to share these reflections, because this is an exploration & not "Truth with a Capital T" ♥️
