- ...at least, compared to Japan. Jiyuna (ANIMEILLUMINATI) and Kizzie Kay talk about the major differences between the competitive cultures in both the United States and Japan - arguably the two biggest regions in the game right now. Why is the game thriving in Japan, yet people seem to be very critical of it and its tournaments in America? Let's find out.

The main difference is not the amount of collabs, its the quality. Here in America we get events with some big streamers, they play their matches and never see the game again.
In Japan, those Vtubers put in an immense amount of work in their collabs, they are there long term. Karubi started playing last year and participates in the Raccoon tournaments, she started as Gold and it took her almost an entire year to reach Masters and she did that all on stream. Botan, same thing.
Its not the same to just watch them play the game once and be done with it, the Vtubers show the whole experience of grinding, struggling, being demoted, getting better, the whole journey, thats actually incredible to get new people to venture into the FGC.
With you talking about gold to masters in a year..
I've just started grinding SF6 proper, I bought it with akumas announcement but only played about 12 hours of Gief and casuals with my friends..
How does rank spread out and is masters inevitable (I heard Brian_F say you will always gain LP)
I started at silver and in 2 weeks I'm now at platinum (I know akuma well but have never spent 100s of hours in a SF game until now)
Sorry for the essay ❤😂
So true. With the Vtuber example, I'm not sure how many fighters Subaru played beforehand, but it's been fun watching her modern Kimberly climb the ranks. She's sitting on Diamond 5 as of this post. I actually caught myself thinking a while back: I'm having more fun watching these Vtubers improve then watching "high-level" play.
click bait.SF6 doesn't struggling anywhere. Its just that Japan is through the roof
Struggling? The only struggle im seeing is not running into akuma for 45 minute blocks in ranked.
Easy solution. Take a break till the next DLC drops.
It was second only to Tekken at Combo breaker in terms of enrollments.
Oh not complaining. I'm playing him too. Just tired of the mirror match haha.
@@liquidbiden As a Sim main I've been climbing again since Akuma dropped. Those fools don't know how to stay on the ground. Seeing less of that as I've moved up towards the top of plat though, I imagine they're only to get smarter.
@@liquidbiden Sounds like I need to heed the call to these mf sticks then, cause I live and die by the Chun and Guile...and Rog, but he ain't in (yet? 🤞)
It's interesting. I just randomly got into fighting games a month ago
I picked up Tekken 8 and didn't like it at all so I grabbed Street fighter VI and ggs and I love them
And so far the community has been super awesome to me even though I suck which is how call of duty used to be before all them tryhards came along, sucked and then complained about it and got the game ruined
Lmao SF6 is not struggling here. Apparently the title is misleading and is not referring to that but still.
So many comments missing the point lmao. Its genuinely mainstream in japan the way call of duty is in america so it's "struggling" in comparison. It aint a dig on you lmao
Exactly! Like this is as big as CoD in the Japanese mainstream and in the west tournament entries are already lower than Tekken 8
@@CB-nz7be So now on top of the FGC gatekeeping games were now gatekeeping certain opinions about them, even if they're based in factual data?
And they aren't perpetuating the idea it isn't popular at all, They're talking about it's relatively low popularity in the west compared to Japan, factual information, and that what we need to do to strive to be more inclusive like the JP side is.
Imagine if back when we were complaining about SFV's lack of content and 6 frames of delay, someone said you couldn't say that because it's "a bad look for bringing in newcomers"
I think being dishonest and defensive is offputtung to potential newcomers tbh
What's a newcomers who actually watches the video, sees its about a desire to be more inclusive, and then sees all the FGC guys mad at that video gonna think?
@@Nocturne989 Not only that but the video isnt aimed at new comers, this isnt a channel that'll show up if you're trying to learn a game. This is just discourse centered around how different the reception and growth of the game has been in different places, clearly aimed at the existing community. Acting like the title is a hindrance to the growth when people's first exposure will always be tutorials and top players trending is disingenuous
Nah that’s still a bad comparison. It looks like no one is missing the point, you’re just being too charitable
COD is cringe AF tho.
Jiyuna is right, need to collab with people outside of the FGC, and more meaningful collabs. Tekken is popping off right now in America because of things like sajam slam and a lot of those players in tekken slam still play Tekken to this day and are constantly showing off the game to their audiences. I think tekken is also easier to feel good faster than street fighter which causes people to stay longer in the west. Capcom did something similar in the west but it didn’t seem to stick as well and I feel like people in the capcom newbie tournament didn’t feel the same. People didn’t take it as seriously and all those players stopped playing after the tournament was over. Sajam slam, players were training hard for that for hours daily. You felt the comradery between them. In Japan from those events, you still have Botan play and in call with acqua and other notable players, korone still plays from time to time.
Sajam slam SF6 can’t wait. The format works.
Yeah the capcom SF6 thing was bad because they mostly chose people who don't care or even have interest in the game. For most of them it was just a quick content squeeze. Doesn't help that they weren't given easy access to help like from a coach which made it boring too; most streamers are also too lazy to put the effort into making training entertaining so they just don't bother and do the usual instead.
Can't wait for Sajam's Soulcalibur VII Sajam Slam
these 13 year old pros are legit built different, my brain couldnt even comprehend predicting my opponents moves till i was like 16
I'm 30 and still struggle to do that consistently
Man fighting game select be having the worst opinions lately.
Yeah idk what’s going on with this channel the topics are janky to
"Worst opinions" is probably the dumbest thing ive ever heard
@@mhead1117You must be an OnlyFans simp 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's jiyuna so they had to make the title the dumbest clickbait possible in his honor
My comment got removed 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Everyone acting like this is clickbait obviously hasnt actually seen how low our numbers are and our engagement is compared to Japan. In JP SF6 is out here as the biggest SF ever with huge mainstream appeal outside the FGC and folks actually in these comments like, "misleading title, we were second in entries only losing to Tekken," like are you reading what youre typing?
In Japan its not only the biggest fighting game around, but one if the biggest Capcom titles. US major tournaments are already lower in entrants than Tekken 8.
Tekken was literally all over my feed the other week specifically cause folks like F.D. Signifier and Dokibird were in the Sajam Slam.
Doing better in Japan =/= Struggling in America
@@Caderfixloxa see that's where the "yall are already losing in both raw numbers and general relevancy to Tekken 8" part comes in in the Street Fighter game specifically designed to aim for more general relevancy. And its losing to a very polished but pretty standard Tekken game. They aren't making whole story modes to appeal to casual gamers. And they're still winning.
@@Nocturne989 1. Tekken 8 has an entire NRS style storymode plus DLC story content. They are making plenty of casual gamer content
2. Tekken 8's sales are LOWER than SF6's overall. Idk where you got the myth that Tekken 8 is selling more, especially with the development problems and the recent wave negative reviews it's getting on Steam.
3. Tekken 8 doesn't have higher tournament numbers than SF6 in the US at all. The stats don't support the CAP you are posting
@@lukejones7164 You took my point of "SF6 made a new style of story mode specifically tailored to new and casual players" and thought countering with "Tekken has a bogstandard NRS style story mode that a lot of FGC folks don't even like and its still doing better than SF6" was *helping* your point?
Of course the much newer game still has lower sales its almost as if Capcom had a massive, multi month head start or something like that. In fact, looking at released milestones and news articles about them, Tekken 8 hit its 2 million milestone faster than SF6 did by a few weeks.
And you can literally look and see that Tekken, with its lower sales and bogstandard FGC content, pulled higher tournament entrants at Combo Breaker, one of the biggest tournaments of the year where SF normally doesn't lose to Tekken.
And of course the main point of the video, where the hell in the mainstream space is SF6 if its so successful then? In Japan I can point to it. In the US I can point to Tekken's mainstream push, the Sajam Slam just happened and was massive and had huge content creators from all over RUclips supporting it and having a damn good time.
I don't think this video's comments showing how super defensive and combative a lot of SF6 folks seem to be getting to just the idea that SF6 isn't doing as well as it should be in the US and lose their shit.
@@Nocturne989 You clearly can't read lol. Tekken 8's sales have slowed down dramatically after the first 2 months while SF6's hasn't, and no, it didn't have a higher number of entrances at Combo Breaker this year either.
The majority of the FGC doesn't compete in tournaments bro, so to even use that argument to begin with was dumb when tournament players make up less than 1% of any fighting game's playerbase
Any time there is an event that includes people outside of the FGC playing fighting games i usually watch. Sajam has been the most successful but i also enjoyed the one Kizzie coached in. Really its about making sure to get the right people who care to get invested in the game. There's one by capcom that was really bad and clear the people playing didn't care at all
fps is more popular as a game genre in america. imo that would be one of the many reasons fighting games are not as mainstream
Fighting games are mainstream but just like you said since fps is so big it makes it look small
@@pleaseshutup7053we aren’t comparing fighting game to other genre here. We are purely comparing SF6 in Japan to SF6 in America (or west). It’s undeniable that SF6 is larger in Japan, and it wasn’t like this until SF6. SF5 was relatively tiny in Japan
@@haruhidaso that wasn’t even the conversation he said fighting games are not mainstream in the USA which is wrong who gives af about Japan are you In Japan?
@@pleaseshutup7053 I’m half Japanese American. I follow both fighting game community, and you are crazy if you think fighting game actually mainstream in America. Don’t you want your community grow larger and more popular? Larger community equates to larger events, more frequent events, larger price pool, more interest, etc. It’s so much more fun to follow the Japanese scene at the moment, and I was primarily following large US tournaments in SF5.
@@haruhidaso there are already large events in the USA what you talking about your making relative comparisons I really do not care if it gets larger
I'm an old head (39) and I hit my local up every few months. I can't really keep up like I used to, but I just like throwing some money at the scene.
Being part of alot of fighting discord in America no one cares unless your master rank. That’s a turn off tbh
It'd be cool to see more novelty special events that bring in people from outside the FGC. Esfand - an MMO streamer - provided some good coverage of his first EVO and showed how cool FGC events are. Jammerz mentioned this before but more streamer or celebrity play off side-events, with prizes and coaching (and maybe even participation) from some pros would make for great publicity. It introduces new audiences to the pros as well as the fundamentals to get good at the game. Like, seeing someone else get better with a little bit of training might inspire others to give it a go. This contributed a lot to the chess boom weirdly enough - with lots of big streamers helping popularise an extremely difficult to market game.
This is the worst clickbait title I've ever seen. There's 2 billion sf6 matches a year. Wtf more do you want?
To be fair fighting games are the premiere esports scene in Japan and they typically dominate in street fighter. Games like valorant overwatch and apex do very similar things to Japan FGC.
Most people in the US aren't even aware that there are more Street Fighter beyond Street Fighter 2... The awareness of the general public between US and Japan is just night and day when it comes to video games.
You are wrong
Street Fighter was in Fortnite……
Yeah, i think Japan entertainment industry also help FGC much more popular early on compared to other countries. Seeing documentary on Nuki and Daigo, various DVD focusing on popular player exhibition matches, a local tv station interview with players... All the right recipe to make FG much more popular and acceptable to mainstream audience
There’s just bigger competition in the USA for esports the fgc gets their shine but it looks small compared to other esport games and communities
Not with Terry Bogard and "Roah" Bison arriving soon lmao
Lowkey i think another factor is that japan seems way more accepting of things like modern controls where as here in america there's alot of people telling modern players "they're scummy" or "not really playing street fighter"
Title isnt relevant or accurate but for example tosay Shuto had 10K viewers on twitch, while Chakotay, the guy whose actually won a large major, had 200+, the draw is just not the same
Don’t forget Mexico’s LuGabo he’s 14 and won Astral Finish Festival last year and has been incredibly consistent. He made top 8 in all of Mexico’s World warriors in the last Capcom cup winning two of them and always placing high in TNS.
I'm more interested in why Tekken is struggling in Japan.
Jiyuna try not to glaze japan for the millionth time challenge (impossible)
Struggling is a crazy word, the game is doing incredible everywhere.
It being mainstream in its domestic country isn’t that surprising but I do agree that we can do more.
Surprising to hear that SF is that more popular at the moment than Tekken. Tekken made more money in the arcades, at least in the last ten to fifteen years if I’m not mistaken
US struggles with offline gatherings and keeping a momentum going on with the tournaments ... the faces of FGC (like Sajam) need to step up and create opportunities for new audience and players
It would be a blessing for the FGC to grow really fast. All the games. More people learning to be cool taking an L can't be a bad thing ya know?
I hate the title of this video. I think The should be "why street fighter 6 is doing better in Japan"
It's literally the first words of the description and the whole topic of the video.
Besides, what other SF6 scene would he be comparing us to? Uzbekistan? Of course he's comparing NA to Japan that's obvious.
In fairness, not a very good title. By commenting and complaining you are effectively doing what they anted. Fighting Game videos do way better when you bait people because FGC is very reactionary when it's something they dont like
Do makotos combo trials in BBCF
That fella ulrich commented on every video
I'm a simple men, I see Botan in Street Fighter, I say: LA LIOOOONNNN ❤
The FGC, and gaming overall, is fine in the US. It’s just not on national TV and part of the normal culture as if it were an actual sport. We’re weird and behind the times like that.
There’s been attempts. I’ve seen ESPN side channels try to put Overwatch (RIP OWL) tournaments and other games in a prime time hour. No idea if those were good ratings. Still, there’s huge events that might not be part of normal conversation culturally, but are on the way. I bet the new, bigger EVO will demand national TV time in a few years.
Dude where is Japan does he live? I just got back from Japan last week. Kyoto 1 day, Osaka 2 days, and Tokyo 3 days. My main goal was to find Capcom stuff, mission big fail. Visited Capcom office in Osaka and it was closed. Then I visited three different Capcom stores basically no SF merchandise, just a handful of silly patches for clothes. Then walking around ZERO propaganda, I never saw anything this dude mentions in the entire week I was there. I was bummed because of it.
Haven’t been playing! Just like everything else online it’s sweaty AF
Its a fighting game... project harder.
If you say SF 6 is "struggling" in America with thousands of players for tourneys like EVO, Combo Breaker, CEO etc then you should see how the game doing in my country where we barely had 20-30 players /tourney despite the prize money is quite big + TO funded the winner to EVO Japan & Vegas. Heck, our weekly online tourney is pretty much dead because there's only 5-6 players who participate. And of course compare to Japan, our local scene looks sad af.
*Here's the gist* :
- The game is still seen by many people as too Drive Rush and throw loop-centric. The patch didn't do enough system-wise to change the game for Americans. People aren't as enthusiastic about how little has changed about the game besides a couple of characters becoming more viable/balanced. The game loop from a year ago still exist and is still prevalent.
- Japanese people don't like to "rock the boat" or be "politically incorrect" even if an issue is 100% legit. Most (not all) will put on their tatemae face when talking about SF6 in public and keep their honne face incognito. Especially when money and status are a factor. This happened with SF5 as well after 6 became the main game. The true feelings about SF5 came out when the publicity left. Integrity isn't a strong trait in the face of success.
- The Japanese scene is like having the entire American FGC placed in California. The unity, proximity of players and companies involved are similar to Japan's past arcade scene. It's easier to communicate and create activities in a more centralized location.
Saying the balance patch didn't do enough system-wise to change the game is just ignorant at best. Did you not see how wake up Drive Reversal helped *El Chakotay* , an American btw, to win Combo Breaker with Lily, a character that everyone put at the bottom tier? Perfect Parry got nerfed and now it has more recovery frame is a big change. Driver Reversal is minus -6 on block makes it less punishable and that's a big a change. Back throw has more pushback to make less throw loop situation is a big change. Combo from jab has more damage scalling also a big change. And of course gameplay loop from 1st season is still exist cause why removed that when it's working just fine. You should read the patch notes carefully and played the game before you make a comment about it.
As someone who watches some JP vtubers (Mostly Korone) its clear JP players like the game more casually and having fun. A lot of American casual players will complain about one thing or another leaving it so its just not fun to watch and then it kills off interest. If SF6 got a sajam slam SF6 would pop off since its just a fun game. A loud minority kills some enjoyement tbh
SF6 isn’t struggling here in America. If anything, this channel is struggling with content.
I wish more people played sf6, all my coworkers talk about xdefiant 😢
I'm so out of touch with gaming news already. I had to google what's xdefiant 🤣
That's just how it is playing fighting games.
jiyuna when japan: gawk gawk 3000
Street Fighter 6 is literally the most played fighting game on Steamdb, this title doesn't even make sense.
2:30 is the answer.
Botan in thumbnail on this channelnwithout being idol showdown damnnnn
Misleading title
Apparently gotta be clickbaitty on youtube. i highly dislike it.
The worst
Yo Jiyuna!! My modern Cammy sensei
honestly, it's probably because Tekken is a lot easier to get into and play to a high rank without knowing anything
And the last thing I will comment coming from COD I do notice small things like in story mode. Whatever outfit you select should be the one worn in story mode.
That's not a big deal but it's something that would not be that hard to do and would add another layer.
And I don't know if they do this because I haven't played since alpha. 2 but adding boards. Whether it's new boards, all the boards in original graphics and also updated current graphics.
Nothing game changing or breaking just things that have people come back.
I wonder what long-time player stalls are on things like that?
japan shows the potential sf6 can reach in the states
Game isn't struggling at all unless the title was purposely clickbait for views. It's the most played fighting game currently across platforms alongside Tekken 8. Not to mention SF6 has already been out for over a year and recently just announced year 2 content/DLC. The game that's really struggling is MK1 lol.
8/10 rage bait title
I don't think people understand what they mean by "struggling". The game is being played and well received in the US, this is great. However, that doesn't mean the game sparking interest and growing the fanbase among the public in general. You don't see streaming events from US content creators collaborating and pulling in over 100k viewers which they have done multiple times already in Japan. It's better to say the game is not doing as well as Japan in terms of building new audiences.
Asia period has a better gaming culture. I used to live in korea and would flip threw the channels on tv and find starcraft2 tourneys league of legends, tekken etc and this was in 2012.Their players are essentially celebritys and even people who dont game know the characters and games
Title is 🧢
Bruh what are these mfs even talking about? SF6 is doing GREAT in America. I just went to an anime con a few weeks ago and even up to 20 minutes before closing, the consoles were full of people, myself included, running sets of SF6 and other fighters. It was never hard to find a game and the tournaments they held were packed. Idk maybe it's just me but I can seem to go anywhere and find a SF6 player.
lmao the young player moving to valorant is prob the kid that used to play dbfz at tatakai tuesday
How is SF6 not popular and have been the NUMBER 1 GAME in every tournament, selling amazingly even in the states and continuously been playing online non stop...where did you guys find these click baited tittles and WHY?? Oh yeah Guilty Gear and SNK, Anime players I forget.
They are talking about growing the game beyond the core fighting game community to the general public. Japan is doing it successfully through Vtubers and other streamers. Pros like Dogura, Haitani, Tachikawa, and Shuto was and is working hard to get stuff rolling but we don’t see the same kind of effort in other regions. SF6 is doing well in terms of small pond in the fighting game community, but SF6 is doing well even compared to other mainstream games.
Also pretty sure it's not the number 1 game at every tournament.
It had less entrants at Combo Breaker than Tekken 8 did.
In Japan by comparison SF6 is as big in the mainstream as something like Call of Duty.
Compared to that were struggling. Which is the entire point of the video. If you'd watched any of it.
Wait, that genjin guy said in his video Japan is washed?
SF6 is doing a good job, but I think in order for it to become mainstream in the US, it has to work harder on attracting the female demographic.
I think that would help is more female commentators for SF6, I know there's no shortage of male commentators, but females can make a money commenting SF6, and also push casual tournaments, we can see even more growth.
We have enough cringy commentators, thank you.
Increasing the female demographic isn't gonna do shit. All it ever does is backfire.
On paper this always sounds good, but in practice it always fails. Look at all the woke movies that aimed to pull women in. They typically fail. The real key is to pull in more casual players in general. The best way they could do that is to have some sort of party rank mode. James Chen had a great idea for one a while back.
Vtubers are the main pillar of the fgc.
The game is literally booming everywhere and maintained 20K concurrent player average even a year after release. What is this click bait title? But yeah, it's Japanese launch was pretty special for sure.
It's not struggling that much to be honest. Here in the west we like too much to complain instead of enjoying the game.
Next title video "why is tekken struggling in japan"
SF6 is "struggling" here in the U.S?? That's news to me, it sure doesn't seem like it. On ranked i'm constantly finding matches against tons of different players no matter what time of day i hop on.
Huh?
This is pure clickbait. SF6 has outsold Tekken 8 in both Japan and the West.
Then why Mortal Kombat, COD, WWE, etc are struggling in Japan and the rest of the world? haha come on, it's like Football works worldwide better than USA
YOU ARE LYIIIIING !!!!!!!!!!
This topic isnt very fair, if you changed this to mk1 then its now the opposite in question. If you look at the player base of past sf series games you will probably see SF6 is extremely popular in the states right now. I do not see anything suprising when comparing japan-based developers having their games more popular in Japan compared to thier international sales.
I guess I go against my east coast mindset brotheren gotta be aggressive
The title of the video is bad. It is not struggling, even if it is doing better in Japan.
This game just had a 44k player count on a 24 hour peak , what other fighting game is doing that ?? CLICK BAIT
*struggling*
Commenting on every video requesting Makoto’s BBCF combo trials, video 109.
The only American game that does anything remotely close to that is call of duty
huh?
As i go further down the comments....good lord do this people miss the point and are taking this too deeply personal.
Street Fighter 6 is struggling in America/US. That is no lie or street fighter hate...SF6 is struggling in the US.
Who know why it is struggling...could be the game is just boring, people just not interested in Street Fighter righr now or just in general with Fighting game (Mortal Kombat 1 is struggling as well)
It is doing fantastic in Japan but America...it isn't and that the issue they are talking about in this video.
Lol rage bait trash
It’s not THAT good of a game.
My top 3 games is tekken 8 guilty gear strive then sf6
Because the game is trash and people moved on
