It’s totally amazing to me that the Japanese MFG’s only provide the public with what they want to sell and not what the public wants to buy!

You know it’s interesting, the top level of the sport still requires homologation in order to race. But, what if the 450 turned into the f1 / motogp bike of motocross and then opened up the r&d flood gates figuratively. Then the top level retail sold bikes would go more towards a 350. It’s not gonna happen but it would be an interesting turn in the sport. I don’t need to own whatever bike Sexton or Anderson can ride at their max. But I’d also want to see how far budgets could push those exact bikes too. My stock 350sxf is ideal for me, but I don’t need it to be the same as the pros ride either.

However one of the points isnt just the power or weight difference between the 450 and 350 but the way it feels/ handles due to lighter spinning masses inside the engine, crank, counter weights , piston....the added weight overall is minor but the way it reacts by the physics of rotating mass and inertia ( resist to changes in angle, direction and accelerating,/ deaccelerating are massive.

I agree... 450 is overkill for most weekend warriors. Listen carefully to a 450 AMA Pro SX race and notice the bikes are not really being used to their full potential (you won't hear those bikes being revved out too much, because those tracks are so tight and the bikes have so much power. In many AMA Pro Nationals, yeah, you can hear that they are utilized more (like with Larocco's Leap). Remember when Doug Henry premiered a four-stroke in the AMA pro ranks, and won? That was on a 400. Today's bikes are faster/better. Also, look at how well Antonio Cairoli (Tony) did on a KTM 350 against 450's in his career in the MXGP's? Often he even got the hole shot. 350's are no joke. My new KX 450 is a scary bike and I'm replacing it before I kill myself on it (already caused severe injuries to my dumb ass).
PS: Not sure what year it was, but I remember watching the likes of Steve Lamson and Ricky Carmichael kick everyone's butt in the open class for the MX de Nations... on a 125 smoker!

450 class should be changed to 350, but they will never do it, because it is too close to 250...

You def don’t need a license to purchase a street bike. You do to ride it on public roads however. And a sport bike is way way more dangerous on public roads than any dirt bike in a corn field

Big difference between a guy your size J and the pro guys 150 pounds in gear,, I am 220 pounds in gear. A 250 and a 350 do not have the power i need to keep a motor in it.

I have a 350. I can confirm, it's a little gay. However doing 3hrs races on a 450 would be difficult. For MX, give me the 45 O everytime.

How about a twin cylinder mxer for hp. .supermoto. if yamaha bulit a twin 900 from 2 450 cylinders, dumped it in a snowmobile, 4 wheeler, adventure bike, hyper moto they would sell shit tons of units. If they made a twin 509 from 2 250s and made a mxer, off road, supermoto and generl vet/ playbike same thing. Be different, be creative, originality is avoided at the expense of conservatism. Think outside the box....doesnt have to be the lightest, best mxer to sell. .the fun factor alone would do it. Hence the 350 KTM ....even tony knew it was harder to win on than a 450 at that level. But only he and maybe a dozen other earthlings can ride a 450 at that level to use that extra power. 99% of us can go betrer, longer ,faster on a bike with usable tamer power. Imagine a twin off road bike with over 100 hps but is linear because of high rpm and torque / hit isnt as strong as a 450 single. I would buy one in a heartbeat. In MXGP twins are legal.
