I still have this on vinyl!!!!!! I always loved this better than "Who Can It Be Now" on the opposite side. Man I miss this shit......nothing today can even touch this.
When I was a kid my cousins and sister and I would make silly home movies. One if them was a news show type of thing and I used the beginning of this song as the opening. I have the vinyl somewhere but I had tried searching for it online many times to no avail. I'm so glad to finally have found it! It's a great recording by a very underrated band. Thanks for uploading it.
So Awesome, thnx for posting this! Been so many years since iheard this..i had or still may have this but the 45 got cracked..got this 45 when i was like 6 in '82..killer instrumental.. never realized how much this beginning reminds/sounds like the intro to 'she's a beauty' by the Tubes
I initially thought "wow! MAW doing a cover of my favorite Cream track!" Then I remembered "oh, I don't think they ever did covers". In any case, a fun instrumental. Reminds me a bit of Oingo Boingo, who I always felt were kindred spirits with the Oz lads.
Thanks for posting this! I used to have this on a mix tape with the A-side of the single and a bunch of other stuff. I always loved that sort of "surf rock" guitar riff in this song. Great tune.
Awesome, thank you. Was quite mad when I saw the expanded edition and saw it was left off. It is similar to another b-side called F-19 which is on that edition so maybe thats why it was left off.
I know I have posted before and thanked you but I just want you to know that I can't get enough of this song and it always brings back good memories. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
I bought the album when it first came out and I also bought this single almost 40 years ago. So, if you can, play this instrumental... NOT at 45 as intended...but at 33 1/3....totally different tune baby!
No, it wasn't. It was their third single for CBS Australia in 1982. The band didn't break through in the States until almost a year after the 1981 release of the "Business As Usual" album. By the time "Who Can It Be Now" and "Down Under" had run their course, the "Cargo" album was about to come out so there was no third US single. The flip side of "Be Good Johnny" was the instrumental "F19," now on the expanded "Business As Usual."
@mpc3po Actually, there's a hair crack in my copy, but it's not audible and fortunately it's survived long enough for me to digitize it. Whenever that happened I would try to return it for a new copy, but usually the entire batch was cracked also. Thanks--glad you enjoyed!
Re: Be Good Johnny, it may not have been a single Stateside, but MTV definitely played the video heavily. I remember that ridiculous dance that Colin does during the instrumental bit at the end. My friends and I thought it was some kind of traditional Australian thing.
I would love that. I don't know why they didn't put this as a bonus track on the remaster of Business As Usual with the other B-sides from that album! Can anyone think of a reason?
I was brought up in a small town that featured a band by the name of "Anyone For Tennis" in the early eighties. Lupo and friends were quite popular at the time and some of their songs were even better than this one - well: at least one, if you ask me... ;-D
Was Be Good Johnny actually a US single? While it was played in the radio like a top ten hit I don't think it was ever actually released as a single in the states. Does anyone know?
I don't think it was ever released as a single in the US. It was all over the radio though and would've been a top ten hit. Cargo was released so soon after Business as Usual that they only had time to release 2 singles from that album. Cargo was already finished so it was released less than a year later the Business which hit everyone else before it hit in the states.
THANK YOU! for putting this up! It sounds great! What are you using to rip? It has a great sound! Also does this count as an instrumental since Colin is singing on it? Or does it have to be words to count as singing?
You're welcome! I ripped with the turntable and a preamp connected directly to the sound card. Software was Roxio Easy Creator, but I'll probably use Audacity for future rips. I don't hear any singing on this one; perhaps you're thinking of "Till the Money Runs Out"?
This should have been on the expanded edition of BAU. A 40th anniversary edition would be most welcome this year!!!!
I can't believe I remember this song, I saw it once in a juke box at a Pizza Hut in 1983
Pizza Hut was so good back then.
Loved Pizza Hut, and their salad bar!
Incredible that MAW left so many great songs like this out of their studio albums
I still have this on vinyl!!!!!! I always loved this better than "Who Can It Be Now" on the opposite side. Man I miss this shit......nothing today can even touch this.
I still have this on 45 too ... I played the ass off this single ... still love it after all these years ...
You ain’t lying.
Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. I just happened to be the first to upload this.
Used to listen to this B side a lot as a kid.
Shintaro: that's probably my fav B-side! so good. i think it's b-side to 'its a mistake'

I still have this 45, and still love this great little tune as much as I love Who Can It Be Now

I have been looking for this and remember it just as it is here. WOW WHAT A GOLDEN MEMORY FOR ME. Can't thank you enough

I use to listen to this side more than Who can it be now, GR8 Post.

Ah, such great memories listening to this as a kid when I used to have this 45, thanks for posting!
You and me, pal.
Same
Thanks--glad you enjoyed it. You can get "Crazy" and "F 19" (flip of "Be Good Johnny") on the expanded Business As Usual.
Ever since you put this on I have listened and listended ,,what can i say, simply THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome, thank you. Was quite mad when I saw the expanded edition and saw it was left off. It is similar to another b-side called F-19 which is on that edition so maybe thats why it was left off.
Played this tune 1-2 times while on the U of IL student radio station when this was NEW !! Vinyl, anyone ??
WPGU? I worked and jocked there for four years. Best years of my life.
I know I have posted before and thanked you but I just want you to know that I can't get enough of this song and it always brings back good memories. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
I remember WOR-TV (Channel 9) used to play this at the end of the inning on New York Mets baseball games as they led into commercial back in the 80s.
Thank you for posting. I used to have this single when I was a kid and lost it. I haven't heard this song since then. Thank you!!!
Que raro que no se haya incluido en los remasterizados del 2003, gracias por ponerlo aqui, soy recontra fanatico de ellos.
And it still hasn't been reissued, has it?
Thanks! I'm a bit surprised no one's posted this before, but glad you enjoyed it!
first men at work instrumental i believe this one. I like it a lot!
I got this at a store called Gemco back in the early 80’s. I was probably 6 or 7 years old at the time.
I remember this on the B side. So good.
Every song are beatiiful of him.
I bought the album when it first came out and I also bought this single almost 40 years ago. So, if you can, play this instrumental... NOT at 45 as intended...but at 33 1/3....totally different tune baby!
Men At Work JAZZ! Coooool man! Thank You!
I also had this 45... thanks for posting this.

Did a quick check on Ebay--there's copies available at reasonable prices. Still annoying that this is the only track they chose to leave off.

@Kohntarkosz You're very welcome--still can't understand why they passed this over, but oh well...
..thanks for taking the time to post such a rare piece of the giants from down under, statman...

thank you statman54!!!
You are doing God's work.
If Hay ever decides to give a crap, here's hope there will be a B-sides and rarities only compilation.
I would love that. I don't know why they didn't put this as a bonus track on the remaster of Business As Usual with the other B-sides from that album! Can anyone think of a reason?
nice!
Cool! Thanks for posting! :)
@mpc3po Yes it is, and both are on the expanded 'Cargo' album.
Thanks much--glad you enjoyed.

@@jasonsumner8482 #3 on the U.S. rock chart, so yes it was a single (and the video received heavy airplay on MTV)
I loved this Kmart 45 i got in the summertime when i was a kid. fLIP IT OVER. B.sIDES
thanks for posting!
You're welcome!
You can’t find this one on Apple Music or Spotify
Turns out that US Columbia released "Be Good Johnny" as a 12" promo; that would account for the airplay.
Plus, MTV had the video in heavy rotation. Back then, I watched MTV way more than I listened to the radio (I turned 12 the summer of '82).
@vernavoo I would usually do that too. In fact, those are some of my favorite tunes.
You're very welcome!
This has such a “Melbourne circa 1981” vibe.
@jakamneziak I like this too, although my favorite MAW instrumental is "F 19."
@S73R30 De nada!
BEST
De nada!
@vinkalor Hmm... I'll have to try that.
Isn't "Crazy" a single only track?
THANK YOU! for putting this up! It sounds great! What are you using to rip?
It has a great sound!

statman54 Listen at ruclips.net/video/ZyOWkKTwIdw/видео.htmlm11s Colin Hay is like Yeaaah eeeeh eeeeh eeeeeh! (he is mimicing the guitar)
bobbybrady8 Oh, it does sound like a voice. That's Colin?
@@dangernew7104 No, that's definitely Colin
Cream had a song titled the same...hmmmm
Yes, but I warn you if my serve is on you stand no chance!
You're welcome!
