I had the same luck as you, even in Guatemala we were able to listen to all of that, we always had good music channels even though all the other channels weren't that good, the music one rocked! and some of the radio stations as well, we were very well covered on that matter.

I'm 72 and a Vietnam (era) vet and I like this song as well.
Maybe because the the lead singer is obviously half blind like me. 😀
One thing american and aussie vets have in common is a distrust of authority after Vietnam.
And we regard and respect Mel Gibson for his better movies like Mad Max and Gallipoli. Every american and citizen of the world needs to know about Gallipoli to understand what is REALLY a mistake in war and conflict and why Australians decided on independence from the UK like the american colonials did after the 'French and Indian' war.
Gibson played an american patriot that REALLY hated redcoats because of his experience in the F&I war, in the movie, The Patriot, where the redcoats, the british officers, especially, were depicted to be as cold blooded as the german Wehrmacht.
Amazing what feelings and thoughts a music video can dredge up when you get to a certain age. 😀

Not often does a music video so perfectly accompany and satirise the subject matter in question. Men At Work created a piece of eternal art and timeless commentary on the notion and frailty of war and a video which truly suggests just how truly daft it ultimately remains. Sometimes all it comes down to is a decision made by a single human being that can affect millions or even billions of the same species. For what?

    • @gps9715
      @gps9715 3 года назад +3

for what? you think life can be peaceful with no conflict? really? are you that ignorant? human nature cannot be defeated, no matter how much love you give or have or want or desire. some people are good, some people are bad. this will never change. extremes of both of these natures exist. sometimes you need to defeat an overwhelming evil. unless you like the nazi way of life.........

@@gps9715 You missed the point & are also oversimplifying it. War isn't always about good vs evil. Many wars, especially nowadays, are fought because of politics, fearmongering, ignorance and greed. Not because they are necessary. Vietnam & the Gulf Wars in Iraq are a great example.

I agree with Holly. This and Overkill were played on TV-61 in Phoenix everyday and sometimes on the radio. Now your lucky if you hear either one of these. Down Under more popular for some reason along with Who can it be now?. I want to here these songs instead and relive the Summers of 1983-84. Those were the good times.

It gently touches me on a very deep level and brings back a certain feeling of my childhood. I cant point the finger at it nor even describe it rationally. It is like an almost faded memory, pale and blurry - but still there...

I was a kid in the 80s. I grew up a hard core music video junkie... MTV, night tracks, radio 1990, solid gold, night flight... and so on. It was all I cared about.
Men At Work make me very nostalgic for that time in my life.
Sad those days are gone but very happy to have their songs still with me.
I bought Cargo on vinyl yesterday... Spent the evening listening to the album and playing bass guitar along to the music.

I agree with you. This is a fabulous song & right up there with their other big hits. I think the reason this wasn't a major hit was because of it's darker tone & also becuz it wasn't as playful or upbeat as "Down Under" was. But at the very least, it was still a minor hit for the band & got a fair amount of airplay back in the 80's.

    Lyrics: | "It's A Mistake" - Men At Work. |
Jump down the shelters to get away
The boys are cockin' up their guns
Tell us general, is it party time?
If it is can we all come?
Don't think that we don't know
Don't think that we're not trying
Don't think we move too slow
    It's no use after crying
    Saying
    It's a mistake
    It's a mistake
    It's a mistake
    It's a mistake
After the laughter has died away
And all the boys have had their fun
No surface noise now, not much to say
They've got the bad guys on the run
Don't try to say you're sorry
Don't say he drew his gun
They've gone and grabbed old Ronnie
    He's not the only one
    Saying
    It's a mistake
    It's a mistake
    It's a mistake
    It's a mistake
Tell us commander, what do you think?
'Cos we know that you love all that power
Is it on then, are we on the brink?
We wish you'd all throw in the towel
We'll not fade out too soon
    Not in this finest hour
    Whistle your favorite tune
    We'll send a card and a flower
    Saying
    It's a mistake
    It's a mistake
    It's a mistake
    It's a mistake
    It's a mistake (it's a mistake)
    It's a mistake (it's a mistake)
    It's a mistake (it's a mistake)
    It's a mistake (it's a mistake)
    It's a mistake (it's a mistake). END.

Pwcritter I agree with you. For those too young to know, It's A Mistake expresses a feeling a lot of us had in the early 1980s, when it seemed like the bombs could drop at any moment. We really felt like some stupid mistake by the Russians or the Americans could destroy the world and we were all living on the edge of a cliff. It's A Mistake has pop appeal, but a simple enough sound that you can't really hide from the emotional heart of its message. For me that makes it poignant and effective.

This song started playing on the radio about 5 seconds after I proposed! 4 years later we still laugh about it. Luckily it wasn't a mistake.

I saw Men At Work in 1982 and they were amazing! Such fun and humor. RIP Greg Ham of Men At Work--you made the world laugh and sing and that is an amazing accomplishment.
