    The first time I heard this song, I was working overnight security in a shipyard. I was doing my rounds, and suddenly I heard the footsteps in the beginning of the song. It made me go back and look for whoever was walking around. It made me feel really stupid when I realized it was on the tape. It did turn out to be one of my favorite songs though, as long as I didn't listen to it at work. :-)

    This song is about the introvert who is the center of the party when it's time to "turn it on". Dr Hekyl is the introvert. Mr. Jive is the center of attention if only for a moment that all true introverts are used to. Two sides of the same person. Every introvert lives this way, and Colin Hay (of Men at Work) was brilliant to write a song about it. Yay Men at Work!!!

    Men at Work only has 4 songs on the American Top 40 and they all went to top 10 back in 1982 and 1983. They also have two platinum LPs, and they are Business as Usual and Cargo. Who Can It Be Now?, and Down Under are chart toppers at #1, the latter is certified as of Grammy Award for the best song and new artist for 1983. Overkill peaked at number 3 and It's A Mistake get as high as number 6, both in 1983. I heard Be Good Johnny from the LP, Business as Usual, and this song, Dr. Heckle and Mr. Jive from the LP, Cargo a lot, but each of them did failed to get to the top 40 in 1982 and 1983, respectively.

    Can you believe all the "nerd to cool" transformation tropes that came out in TV shows and movies after this? Mind you, it actually started with Jerry Lewis in the original Nutty Professor.

    • @icanliveforever1243
      @icanliveforever1243 8 лет назад +2

      +Ricardo Martin It could be argued that it started with 1960's "The Two Faces of Dr Jekyll". Which was a straight up horror film. As a twist from the normal form Dr. Jekyll was a loser and Mr. Hyde was handsome (but evil).

    • @Floymin
      @Floymin 8 лет назад +1

      +Micheal Polant Sure... if anyone thought that the bourgeoisie if 19th century England was "cool".

    • @icanliveforever1243
      @icanliveforever1243 8 лет назад

      Floymin Funny enough the same company (Hammer) made an earlier comedy film in the 50's called The Ugly Duckling. In it Dr. Jekyll is nerdy but becomes the cool Mr. Hyde. So I'd say that's where it started, though it could be earlier.

    • @Floymin
      @Floymin 8 лет назад +1

      Micheal Polant
      You must be talking about "The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll", not "The Nutty Professor". The Wiki article implies that Ugly Duckling was not successful enough in England to be shown in America. That means that the Jekyll/Hyde comedy trope was not acknowledged in America until The Nutty Professor.

    This song is basically for all my geeky party friends in the San Francisco bay area. They're naturally heady introverts, yet there's such a strong social scene here...that in order too have fun, they have to...let's say...slip something in their drinks to become the life of the parties.

    Men at Work epitomise the Aussie spirit by their mischievousness and play-like music scene. I really got into them when Gregg Ham died but it's a song of my GSCEs years as I fell in love with Eng Lit then and 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' was the book I had my exams on and at prom we blasted this out- what good times
