    I've never had TikTok as I love the full length soap videos and I know myself I wouldn't enjoy a quick video and really only browse Instagram briefly so I totally understand your taking a break. My daughter took a 12 month social media break for her mental health and was so much happier

    I left all social media , cable and streaming 4 years ago. The best decision I have ever made. My new focus is buying books and learning new things. I learned to make soap while we were all shut in. You inspired me. I have not watched your videos in quite some time and I can tell how much you have grown as a person while still keeping your wonderful personality. Subscribing again. Peace and wellness!

    Yes, spread the word about how social media affects your mood! I can't imagine what it must be like to grow up with it in middle and high school. No wonder kids have such high rates of depression nowadays.
    Personally, I noticed a huge improvement in mood when I started checking Facebook once a week instead of once a day and limited the amount of time I scroll. Don't have instagram or tiktok and don't plan on getting them!

    • @HaydenHaystackArts
      @HaydenHaystackArts 2 года назад +3

      It definitely is a part of the increase in depression diagnoses, though lots of other factors do play into it too.
      Some examples: more awareness, more access, our current economy, worsened societal expectations with less payout, depression secondary to other illnesses which may be worsened recently, etc. Definitely agree with you though.

    I did the same thing, and it was a fantastic decision. I also cancelled cable and put the TV in storage. I thought I would miss the TV, but I've realized that everything on it was either dumb garbage or political scare-tactics that made me depressed and angry. I don't miss it at all. I now have that time for things that are interesting and/or informative. I've also noticed that I not only judge myself less harshly but I also judge my friends and family less harshly when I'm not comparing everyone to fake people on screens. Granted, there's a lot of junk on RUclips, too, but that's the one guilty electronic pleasure I still engage in. I did learn to make beautiful soap from RUclips soapers like you, so that's how I justify it.

    IDK if it's because it's Renaissance Festival season but I would honestly love if you made a video making soap via methods of the past centuries (like 1000s, 1500s, and 1900s,etc.). Would be educational and fun to see!

    • @grandmachickenscluckingoodsoap
      @grandmachickenscluckingoodsoap 2 года назад +12

      A soap from that era would be made using wood ash to produce lye and is rather labor intensive. There are videos on RUclips that show the process

    2. Yeah my social media usage was 8hrs and 14 mins until about 2 months ago when my therapist suggested I decrease it to help with my ADHD and emotional health. After that I got a puppy and now he’s 5 MO so we go hiking and I fell in love identifying flora and fauna in nature. I hear you on the social media hiatus. It was a very eye opening experience. I decided to take a couple months break from FB and Insta since it was so time consuming. Pictures, vids, scrolling constantly. The first couple of weeks were rough, filled with FOMO. This happened December 2019 and from then I've literally only posted twice on FB, along with the occasional post insta. I think the best part turned out being my mental health because I'm not constantly comparing myself, kids, etc to other people. Definitely the right choice for me! 🙂

Many are stuck in that mess and know they need out but are afraid just like many of us were afraid of getting off of alcohol/drugs. Like I said it sounds laughable but with so many ppl admitting to having serious mental woes because of soc med I don't think it's all that laughable. I gave up Facebook and Instagram a few years ago for some personal healing reasons and I honestly don’t miss them at all. I actually get anxious and icky feelings when I have to log into them for whatever reason on occasion. I’m so happy someone else feels the same way about those apps being joy killers. I do still watch/listen to RUclips videos when I’m doing other things, or going to sleep, so my usage is still really high on that front. But still! I felt so seen! I don’t know what anyone I know from high school or fringe friends have been up to in YEARS, and I don’t care. It’s been great for me to not compare myself to others or devote time out of my day to view their life instead of spend time in mine with family and friends who deserve my attention. Thanks for speaking on this! Good on Caleb too for being an attentive, supportive, and watchful husband/partner!

    The talk about social media is something i've been thinking recently too. We see more and more things rage inducing while scrolling, and these things take so much brain energy! • @mitchellb8264
    @mitchellb8264 2 года назад

    Thank you for sharing your story Katie! I also “took a break” in spring 2019, and it turned into 3 1/2 years so far. The only one I still get on is RUclips and all I watch there is cooking videos, your channel, and occasionally a few others. I still need to take breaks from YouTuve from time to time. I have been struggling ever since they added shorts. They are addicting. I was off social media when Tik Tok took off so I never got one, and through Shorts I can see how addicting it is! Anyway, my life too was so enriched by taking time away from those things!! I have more time to actually THINK, which sounds crazy like “of course I have time to think” but I honestly don’t think I was in touch with my inner emotions and thoughts when I was on social media all the time. I also find I am a more positive person. I will say, being off social media is sometimes isolating for real life, especially as a college aged person. Lots of times there is new lexicon and lingo that I don’t understand, and I find it hard to connect to people who I perceive to be very invested in social media. Has anyone else had these issues? Anyway at this point I’m just word vomiting into the void, but thank you for sharing Katie! I’m so glad you’re feeling better and experiencing a creative resurgence!

    I gave up Facebook specifically for the Lent season one year and have not gone back. It's been over a year and I can honestly say that I don't miss it. I keep it around to occasionally check in on far away family members and a few groups, but even then I probably check in once a month if that. I also stopped checking TikTok once I realized exactly how much it was interfering with things. Instagram was never really my thing so that was easy to give up.
    I started substituting my crocheting for the time I spent on most social media and couldn't be happier. I've crocheted for over a decade, but I've completed more projects since quitting those things.

    I loved this whole video! The soap looks fantastic, and I absolutely agree about social media. When I found the digital well-being thing in my settings I was appalled at how much time I spent on my phone. I teach and my summer was totally consumed by my phone when I realized just how much time I was spending on it I took a nearly month-long break and it was amazing! Once the school year started, I convinced myself I needed it to relax (which sounds so much like a substance addiction). Your video convinced me to go on another break and look at how I can make that change permanent.

    Like I’ve said before, social media gives me mood poisoning. I just can’t do it. It bothers me how some people choose to be unkind, the content is so often not in keeping with my morals, misinformation abounds… and I’m a sponge and tend to absorb other’s attitudes - even if I think it won’t affect me - it does. Every time.
    You and Caleb are perfect for each other. He’s attuned to you, and so he should be! What I would like to praise is your being able to receive his words. Not every relationship can handle that.

    I think many people can relate to your experience. I know I spend a lot of time on my ipad or iphone when I’m not working because I fill my day with it. Realizing the hours on each platform or categories does help asking yourself if it’s worth it. But I also feel like being aware of the news from the USA, the UK and my own country are integrally part of my job as an English teacher in a non-English speaking country. I have to know what’s going on to engage my students, and know how the language is being spoken online to be able to provide an accurate teaching (as well as understanding the students’ way of speaking due to the evolution of our native language too). It’s tricky. But I’d love to get less time from something somewhere to be able to have less anxiety and sleep better.

I got rid of my Facebook app awhile ago, and I recently got rid of my Instagram app. I’ll occasionally pop back on to share a fun experience I want to document, but for the most part I avoid them like the plague. I do still use RUclips (obviously), but most of the channels I watch are cooking or art related, both of which I love learning more about. Social media has become a drug for a lot of people, myself included, and there are studies that back that up. The world would probably be a lot better without social media, but I see the benefits of it as well. Whether the benefits outweigh the harms is something we all have to evaluate and decide for ourselves.

    Katie, I'm really glad you're taking this step. I told my husband you're heading to another burnout. Please just be kind to yourself. Please xxx your whole personality is in you voice, and if one listens really close, you give a lot away! Stay healthy and take care. X

    I've never joined any social media, which can mean I miss out on some things, but l've never understood the fascination or addiction. Life is too precious to spend your life watching other people's!

    I relate so much! I had downloaded tiktok years ago (kinda at its beginning). I started just watching then started making videos. In that time I was looking for an escape in life. I will tell you it affected me in so many facets of life. My mental health, relationships with my family. It got to the point I had to sit down and really evaluate was it worth it. Needless to say it is no longer a part of my life and I try my best to not interact with things like it. ie: RUclips shorts. Sounds dumb but doing so changed my life 🙃

    How did you know? I have been thinking and feeling this way for a bit. I only have an Instagram account, used for work only. But I seem to be experiencing similar symptoms as you. I don't have a personal page, I've never been on tick tock or twitter, or what have you. I got rid of Facebook as soon as they opened it to the masses. When it first came out, you had to have a college email address to join. Who else remembers that?! 😆 I thank you sincerely for being open and honest. You can see a change in you, and in the best way! So keep it up, and thank you for all you do! Much love! ❤️🤙💫

    Hi Katie, another beautiful soap. I’m happy with your decision to remove yourself of most social media. I never had tik tok, removed twitter, stop using Facebook, rarely use instagram, and watch a few video on RUclips at night, and I feel good 😊

    Thank you for the encouragement!☺ I have been trying to make myself take a break for months!! This little push is helping me feel motivated to actually do it in October. For me, it's YT and Insta. I always avoided adding TT or FB because I knew I already wasted enough time. Sadly, it means I will have to take a break from your videos as well but, hopefully, after a break, I can learn to moderately enjoy my favourites, of which you are one. Perhaps I will pick a top five or schedule time each week and see who fits in. All the best Katie!!... I was so tempted to put Kacey or something😆

    This same exact thing happened to me with social media! I was basically “doom scrolling” absolutely miserable looking at everyone’s posts. I decided to delete Instagram, twitter, and even Facebook, and I’ve been so much happier since then! They say ignorance is bliss and it’s been so nice to focus on me and my happiness and well-being instead of watching other peoples’ lives.
    I support your decision so much and am so happy that this has done wonders for you! Wishing you the happiest of journeys ahead ❤️

    I have never taken a social media break but you’ve got me thinking it might do me well to take one. I’ve been wanting to get back into writing after not for the past few years after my concussions but really struggling with the creative energy. I’ve gotten some back for other crafts, which has been great, but not so much the writing. I don’t use tiktok much, but I have been spending a lot of time on instagram. Might have to experiment with this.

    Yes! They have done studies linking social media use to depression and anxiety. I've seen my son use TikTok, and it's a total immersion. You have to keep actively engaged and scroll, scroll, scroll. I just use RUclips as background noise at work, since I'm in an office by myself and it gets too quiet for me. But RUclips is more passive; I can set up music, nature sounds, or a soap-making video ;) to play and it doesn't consume my attention.

    As social media can be both good and bad, I will never make a TikTok account. It's a good decision to stay away from that app... It's good to take breaks as well. Do as you feel! I personally, use the internet to promote my art, look for news (as I don't have a TV), search for creative and interesting things, etc. I like being on social media, but some things I'm glad I did are : I cleaned my list of people whom I follow as it took me too long to check all (I'm still subscribed to you tho 🥰), I rarely read comments and I don't engage in internet arguments anymore. It made me feel much better. I don't spend that much time on the internet, but at least it has to be quality time!

    I can completely agree Katie. Although I know you're not gonna see this, but, I can totally 100% relate. I decided to stop hosting my design teams' auctions on Facebook, and really not linger on it for hours anymore. I might, *might* jump on for a few minuets per day, but really, that's about it. And the amount of time it has freed up, to clean my home, take care of my kids, it's amazing the difference is mind blowing! I'm far less stressed. It's all about finding a balance for life, that makes life a lot more worth living. Letting the world dictate where you spend, how you spend every waking hour of your day, is not good for us. Congrats on figuring this out.

    I read a whole lot, and I watch RUclips videos of an evening and often into the wee hours of the morning, as I suffer with insomnia. I will take your advice tho and check my stats. I've never thought about how much time I spend on my tablet. I'm not a fan of Tiktok and I very rarely go on Instagram, or facebook. My weakness is RUclips app, and my Kindle reading app. I hope my stats are not too bad, but I think they might make grim reading.
    Oh gawd, I think I'm a bit of a dopamine addict! Thanks for the heads up Katie, it's much appreciated. I will take it for the good advice it is and do something to change my life for the better. You know, there's a reason I love your videos, even tho I have no interest in making soap. That reason is you Katie! You're a fun loving, cheerful and wise person, and I think you're wonderful! You always cheer up any rough sort of day for me, and I love listening to you talk. Your voice is so adorable, and full of energy and joie de vivre! I love that about you. And I love watching you create. God bless you and all those you love Katie. Have a great day!

    I gave up social media in September 2014 and have never gone back. It is the best thing I ever did and I am horrified at how much I wanted to share back then. I wasn't even that bad. My husband still has his, but he only really uses it for his hobby and he was never really that into it to begin with. We also don't post our daughter online at all. Take the photos for your own memories, but only send them to the people who really matter and live your life for you and not random strangers online.

    Good for you honestly. Not only does Social Media get you addicted, if also has SO MUCH negativity and comparing yourself - it's so unhealthy for your brain.
    I uninstalled Instagram, which was the only thing I used anyways, from my phone and I sometimes check it on my laptop for messaging some friends I have on there. But scrolling through the recommend page always made me so upset, because the algorithm tries to show you things you will engage with - and that includes negativity and harmful ideas and opinions to get you upset so you share and comment. I hate it so much.
    If you find yourself being more negative and drained - check your social media usage.

    So happy to see someone leaning away from tick to and instagram. I've never liked my experiences trying to browse in those places. The rapid fire videos and the loud music, as well as all the ads drives me nuts. I also can't search well for what I want. Probably because I'm old. I pay extra on RUclips for no ads. I still have Facebook, but I love RUclips best. And of course I love you too. These soaps are lovely, but I come here mostly for your chatter and fun.❤️❤️❤️

    I've often felt a bit left behind since I never really 'engaged' with tiktok and instagram, and I still sometimes think I should give it a proper go so I could find hobby friends, but other times I hear about how those apps can really impact peoples' lives and I am a bit glad. I have my own different digital 'vices' (for lack of a better word), so I am no saint that is immune to throwing time and focus into the hole of the internet, but I've dodged the social media variety so far, thankfully. I don't even use my facebook anymore other than to check it every other month or so, and I've had that dang thing since it was only for university students.
    I think this soap looks so lovely and I bet it smells divine! I like that waffle embed a lot, it's so cute.
