In the heart of Yorkshire, a hospital deals with critical patients 24/7. A dangerously ill man arrives into the ward struggling to breath. Doctors and nurses work fast to ensure he receives the right medical attention. Meanwhile, another critical patient arrives and the staff are concerned he's suffering from a heart attack. They prepare to transfer him to a specialist ward. Elsewhere, staff examine a child's sprained ankle.
The doors of the Barnsley A&E department are open every hour of the day. The reality series allows for a peek inside the hearts and minds of the medical emergency teams, and how they deal with critical situations revolving around people's lives and illnesses. The close-knit team exchanges typical Yorkshire banter and humor to aid them with getting through their often long and tough days.

Where we live, ER s divert between Hospitals..so when one declares they are full, the ambulances go to a different hospital as assigned. I comment on this as it is not a routine I have seen at this and other UK hospitals.....
I think the issue there is that it’s a fairly rural area. Here in the states we go on diversion but for level one trauma centers are generally in bigger cities.
Same all over ! Once one becomes full capacity the 999 operators will divert the ambulance crew to next hosp or closest hosp

At my last job I worked with a nurse from the UK 🇬🇧 she was very nice and well educated. I also worked with a nurse from the Philippians who was actually an MD but it was easier to qualify as an RN when she moved here. 😅
We need the level of care like this in the States. All the states Dr’s think is we’re after pain meds.
I’m 61 years old. I have a Doctor that controls my pain and that should cover that.
But you have to remember, socialized healthcare means HIGHER taxes (most countries pay 50% of their yearly income) and WAIT times are LONGER! I lived in Europe. Had a pulmonary embolism in 2015. Waited 10 HOURS to be seen as a ‘priority’ patient!
Actually basic rate of tax in UK is 20%

Jane Allen is a real rock star!! ❤❤❤❤ but to be honest- the whole staff are terrific and the Sisters coordinate so many things at once….
My husband was on this mask it saved his life. He did very well tolerating it he would have died otherwise. I would highly recommend it for anybody with severe breathing problems
I really don’t want to take anything away from these Drs but they don’t seem to have enough staff to cope. I watch 24 hours in an and e, the hospital is St George’s and the difference between there and here are night and day. These Drs and nurses at Barnsley are amazing coping under this pressure, I can only imagine how bad it was there during Covid. My heart goes out to these staff. They must be under so much stress. The NHS needs so much more money, hospitals like this one show the problems they’re facing. No beds because there aren’t enough staff to care for the patients. …….and It’s just getting worse.
You're not getting the full picture with glamourised, fluffy tv shows like 24 Hours. It's very watered down compared to the chaos of the NHS...

It is extremely important to have a living will but people dont do that This causes a lot of angsiety for your loved ones. So please get it done.

If a heart attack victim needs to go to Sheffield Hospital then why didn't the ambulance take them there first to began with??
They take seriously ill patients to the closest hospital in order to stabilize them. Once they're stable they're sent for whatever procedures they need. Barnsley probably doesn't have a cardiac catheterization lab.
Not all hospitals have the specialist unit that he Needed
Because the ambulance crew take the patient to the nearest hospital. It’s up to the doctors there to redirect them if necessary.
They are ambulance drivers/paramedics not heart specialists
If a patient is showing ECG changes indicative of MI the crew can contact the PPCI centre directly and transfer directly if they are accepted. If not accepted or there are no ECG changes they go to the nearest A&E for a blood test to check for elevated troponin levels that confirm MI and are then transferred to PPCI once stabilised, for stenting or CABG.

I used too but after heart was not functioning properly I had to have a pacemaker ICD no more red bulls or lots of caffeine

By I noticed the lady's nebulizer treatment I had same unit it was in the early 1990s I had the same nebulizer so I'd say either later 90s

I think our nurses have to spend too much time doing administrative work when they should be looking after patients, because of cuts we don’t have ward managers anymore.
Why are some of the nurses called Sisters?
Sisters (also known as Ward Sister or Unit Sister) are responsible for the overall running of each ward/unit and for standards of nursing care. They lead a team of staff who ensure the delivery of quality services and are key in ensuring clear communication between those involved in patient management.
I think maybe she is asking why? Not what they do? Is it religious? Is it where they took their schooling? Or is it just an English thing?
No nothing religious but a nursing term and sisters are very highly trained.
I suppose it’s the equivalent of a charge nurse in the 🇺🇸
Because back in the day all nurses were nuns. So now it’s just the term for the most senior nurses.

I had to go to hospital as I have rheumatoid arthritis and complications with it, and the female ambulance paramedics put her knee in my lower spine and damaged it I screamed out I don’t think she meant to hurt me but I can’t walk without severe pain I didn’t report her as I didn’t want a bad mark against her , but I hope she doesn’t do it to anyone else as my suffering is permanent now
You have to report it asap to PALS don’t worry bout them getting black mark on their name , you now can’t walk without pain !!!!

Nothing upfront. Same for treatment. Just slightly higher taxes at 20% baseline. We do have to pay for some antibiotics if theyre from a pharmacy.

Apparently it never occurred to them to add another floor to the hospital to alleviate the bed shortage. Nobody should have to wait hours to see a doctor and then wait on a gurney in the corridor until there's a bed available in a ward.
Whilest i agree with you about nobody should have to wait that longbeds are not the problem its staff, they only have so many people to watch each amount of beds, no nurses no beds… even if the bed is there and empty, it doesn’t count unless they have a nurse to watch it, the nhs is under funded, the US also has this problem.
I fully agree. People can die in halls. Plus all hospitals should have a cath lab! You shouldn't need to be transferred to another hospital and wait in there halls.
Chances are the situation would eventually occur again. Another floor would have to be staffed.

Health care in England is not so great. Hospitals are over-flowing. Lack of doctors. Lack of medical facilities.
The US is the same, as a person in texas, I had to be hospitalized and no one would take me as a transfer, in all of Texas that had a Oral surgeon, I had to leave the hospital as a AMA and then go to the hospital that had one, wait 18 hours to be seen and admitted even though i already had all the xrays, and CT scand done and brought with me for ENT, and Oral surgery to help me. I had sinus fractures that caused air to build up under my skin. I waited for so long in the ER lobby. Then when i got seen I wasnt even seen in a room, they put me in a bed in the hallway. The UK has issues, But the US has everything the UK has in issues PLUS people not able to afford their care.

Helluva moment and way to talk about not resuscitating someone. Not tactful or sensitive to Paul, struggling to breathe, or his worried wife.
Well it’s important to let the patient and his wife make decisions regarding DNR or going full code on a patient with a terminal illness. If that was me or my dad I wouldn’t want a full code or CPR performed on a fragile person.
Yeah it's protocol to discuss possible outcomes. Better now before they code.
I'd rather a mask than intubation. I had cardiac arrest while undergoing catheter ablation. I woke up intubated. Screwed me up for a bit. It's been two yrs ago. I'm ok now.
My grandmother had a pacemaker put in when she was 82. They asked her the same way and she said “no heroics”. I was 14 years old and remember exactly where everyone was standing in that room when she said those words. She made it through multiple battery changes and at some point changed that answer to three minutes of compressions.(she was a direct opinionated person) When she was 100 she had issues with her anemia that affected her heart. She made it home after several weeks in the hospital and rehab but had a decline shortly after. At the age 100 she passed away at home with her family around her just the way she wanted it. My parents spent the last 15 years of her life making sure she had everything in place to safely live at home.
And…it’s a good time for you (collectively speaking) to discuss your wishes with your family and have your advanced directives on file with your hospital. DNR? Full resuscitation? Life support measures? Donor? These decisions should be made by the patient while they are still able to communicate them. I wish you all good health and happiness.
