- In this episode I will restore the Gameboy Pocket retro console. This unit is missing the glass screen on top of the actual LCD screen and also the battery cover. I managed to find an original cover. I will show you how to fix a screen burn and do a general cleanup on the Gameboy. I don't do electronical work every week but I promise there will be also this type of videos every once in a while. Check out the link bellow to support this channel. I get a small fee every time you buy from amazon after clicking my links, even if you end up buying something else.

To open the shell I needed my electronics screw driver set that has the Y-shaped tri-wing screwdriver The shell is closed with that that sort of screws so no one would go tinkering about on the inside. On the inside the screws were normal Phillips heads (cross shape). Board had different looking screws than the metal piece that was attached to the shell so its not easy to mix them up even though I only used one tray.
I took also the metal parts out from the shell because I washed it with water but I only show this in my extended Patreon version of the video. I wanted too keep the youtube version much shorter but without cutting out any of the important parts.
The board looked fine and I rubber the whatever small corrosion I found off with Isopropyl alcohol. I recommend using electronic grade alcohol like the one I've linked above.
The issue with the screen is called screen burn and it is caused by UV-light. The polarizing filter on the screen is damaged. There is another filter behind the screen which can also get damaged but in this case the damage was luckily not so extensive. Sometimes the filter comes off nicely but in my case I know it was going to leave a lot of adhesive residues because of the crystalline look it had. This is not extremely bad but will mean that getting the adhesive off will be much more work. If you are lucky it might only take 10 minutes but for me it took around 1h 45min.
When placing the new polarizer it is very important to keep the adhesive on the polarizer clean and also to keep the screen clean because any residue of the old adhesive will leave a nasty looking bubble and if you touch the polarizers glue with your fingers you might end up with sort of foggy looking areas on the screen.
I used a piece of tape to help me with aiming the polarizer on it's place. If the polarizer is slightly off it wont matter as the edger will be hidden pretty well. More important part is to make sure you have no bubbles. I had some because it's actually really hard to do this when filming... But luckily I was able to remove them.
Thanks for checking out my video once again! If you liked it please subscribe, like and share it with your friends.I don't post these electronic repairs every week, but there will be more so stay tuned! - Хобби
I have no idea how I managed to do that, but in the subtitles I call IPA (isopropyl alcohol) with name PAL. Twice! It should say IPA.
Four times actually lol
I thought I might do and backlight upgrade at some point but I will find one that has broken screen for that because if the original is fixable I prefer fixing it
@@OddTinkering Any idea why the power light doesn't show up? Isn't it supposed to be red? I forget It's been 2 decades since I owned one of these bad boys.

ironic how subtitles are disabled for this video
@Literalicity. Well, there's not really much of a need for subtitles on a video that has no voiceover and already provides some of its own.

I just love these videos. It's almost like ASMR. All the brush sounds and sounds of old plastic and screws coming out if the case. Just leaves me feeling super peaceful and calm.
Renaming the pokemon like that. You cheeky sod! I had no idea the screen could be fixed like that, I would have never thought to replace the polariser.
Same here, and to think I was replacing the entire screen with a new one! Now that isn't a bad idea either, the vintage Gameboy does use ink for it's screen that degenerates over time.
Now I honestly would have replaced the screen with this one with a backlit model. Now yes the batteries don't last as long and you do have to make a bit of fitment as the screen has the thin light strip. But it does allow you to play the GB in poor light and in the dark. It's a good upgrade as is the backlight screen for a classic GB Advance. But I can appreciate the effort to make use of all the original (minus polarizer film) parts and repair the unit.
Excellent video!!!
It's not a true gameboy unless the batteries don't match
MWB Gaming one has to be half dead, and one has to be full. And when it dies, you flip/switch em so you can get that last bit of juice out!
and one has to be from the remote control!

I can't even imagine the excitement and satisfaction when you put the batteries in and turn it on to see if all that hard work paid off. Amazing job, makes me feel so nostalgic. Good work!!
As someone who fixes stuff for a living, it's as close as you can probably get to a legal form of crack cocaine
First GB pocket models like yours didn't have power led. Later, they fixed that mistake and added it like on the original GB. You made a mistake buying that screen protector, it's also sold without the power led hole. Nice job fixing that screen, people usually throw them away when they're burned like that.
Great attention to detail! I need to look harder next time
You had one job...... :)
Also Gameboy pockets didn't use that color of polarizing film. Pea green was only used on the original DMG models. Pockets used a more silvery polarizer.
@@slaytallica136 I thought it might've looked a little off since he was recording it. Definitely looks different from mine which has an almost greyish green

It's not too difficult to get into with the right preparation and toolset. That includes research and technique, soldering can be scary but as long as you're patient and practice you can get it. I can totally imagine him playing pokemon for an hour naming his starter "subscribe" and then catching 3 more pokemon while giggling to himself.
You make me want to buy “parts” game boys off eBay just to fix for shits and giggles
Restoration does sound like a lot of fun, but I wouldn't know where to start. Maybe I'll pick up some "junk" listings and open them up for fun, though. Even if I don't end up fixing anything it could be a fun experience for a few bucks.
@@Lucifronz I've toyed around with fixing consoles before, dismantled and cleaned NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, PS1, PS2, XBOX, XBOX 360, Gameboy, DS Lite. Out of all of those, I think the PS1 was the easiest and most straight forward. They're only like $10 on eBay. It's suuuper fun and satisfying to take stuff apart and putting it back together is like doing a 3D puzzle. I recommend just buying one to play with and see what happens.
@@nihilnothing Yeah, that seems like something I might do sometime. Even if I make no real progress, I might learn something.
Sometimes you'll get lucky like I did... bought a perfectly good Pocket like he's fixing above... for dirt cheap because the seller said "the screen is too dark (IIRC, this was a long time ago now)". The contrast needed to be adjusted. 2 second fix and I had perfectly working Pocket without taking anything apart.
@@Lucifronz This channel has a video on restoring two different model PS1s, hopefully that can give some help on what to do
The original screen lens is actually plastic - so you've made it better than original!

what i learned from this video actually helped me solve my ancient floppy-run embroidery machine's junky screen problem. Kinda cool to think that what you work on, which requires skills and knowledge on all sorts of repair, can be made into intriguing videos AND can help non-tinkerers understand their repair problems.
This reminds me of when I was little. I was obsessed with seeing how things are put together and how they work. I would take things apart. Unfortunately, I almost never knew how to put it back together. Especially if springs were involved. Luckily, most of the time, my sister could fix it. Sigh. I was about 19 when I finally convinced myself to stop taking things apart. Mainly because my sister had went to college 6 hours away and I couldn't fix what I messed up.
I admire the fact that you know what you are doing, and I think you do great work!

Tip: if isopropyl alcohol doesn't dissolve an adhesive, sometimes acetone or lighter fluid works like magic
Acetone weakens plastic though and can actually eat through it, so probably not a good idea to use it in this case.

the moment when you put the screwdriver together is so satisfying. lol amazing job
For the adhesive I find that if I cut the end off a q tip and use the paper "stick" to scrape, it does a really good job of scraping the adhesive without damaging the glass under it.
This is as close as you can get to ASMR without being an ASMR channel. A hidden gem. Well done sir.
