Mephiles is in the Generation credits, after the Planet Wisp part of the credits a few screenshots of past sonic games past by quickly, the scene where Shadow first meets Mephiles is one of them.

Well, in Sonic Forces, you can make an avatar of Mephiles, it's not gonna look exactly like him, but he will have a striking resemblance, what you do is you make a hedgehog avatar like if you were trying to create Dark Sonic, or Shadow, make his skin white, select the 8th victory pose, because it makes the avatar do a demonic ninja move, make his eyes green, then once you finish making the avatar, you select the void wispon, since it shoots dark purple energy like Mephiles, then when you go to Fitting Room, go to Lower Headgear, and select that white thing that covers the avatars mouth and nose, then when you go to Gloves, select a pair of black, white and purple gloves, and when you go to Footwear, select the purple versions of Shadow's hover shoes, and finally, when you go to Body, you select Shadow's chest hair, and that's how you can make an avatar of Mephiles the Dark. You don't have to listen to me if you don't want to, but if you do, I hope you have fun with the new avatar, Lord Danny.
Hey if they could just do that and then do the same with Forces, it might remove the stain left on Sega's reputation and make them look better in the public eye given it would show they care enough about the franchise to fix their mistakes.

Ok let me just suggest an idea to Sega for a Sonic Generations 2. I’m sorry if this is to much like a fanfic but, it’s the best I got. So after Eggman and Infinite loose at the end of Sonic Forces Eggman then gets mad at Infinite for failing him and takes away the Phantom Ruby, his mask, and kicks him out. This angers Infinite as he once again feels weak and betrayed so he comes up with an idea for revenge. He sneaks back into Eggman’s base during the night, then he looks over all of Eggman’s failed planes to try and defeat Sonic and Infinite comes across the Solaris project. Interested in this Infinite then takes back the Phantom Ruby and secretly takes two Chaos Emeralds (how he does this I don’t know). He then travels back to a timeline before Solaris was erased finds Mephiles and they agree to work together using Mephiles ability to time travel and the Phantom Rubys ability to wrap reality to distort time and space to get revenge on everyone who wronged them. Now that would be an amazing intro to the game. After that we would get a long story revisiting previous games like in the first Sonic Generations but, not only with two villains that are actually developed but, with a more a complex story with the Chaos Emeralds, the master emerald, the phantom Ruby, and Solaris. But we could also revisit old and new games with better levels, playing as even more characters like Team Dark, Silver, and Classic Sonic but, you could also have more Villain team ups that would fit. Have a big villain team up like a Mephiles and Infinite fusion, the deadly Six, Chaos, Dark Gaia, and The Biolizard. How cool would that be?! In fact don’t just stop there, BRING BACK FAN FAVORITES!! Bring back Tikal, Gamma, Chip, the Werehog have the whole game be one big fan service bringing us everything that we love while adding in new gameplay elements, improvements to the originals, and a descent story for everyone to see. THERE! I did what Sega is failing to do these days I made an idea for a new Sonic game and made it appealing for new and old fans, and didn’t make it so predictable like they’re doing now I went back to the days of Adventure, 06, and Heroes I made it unpredictable, awesome, inventive, and unique. 😲 Thank you for your time.😁
The only issue with your idea are the IDW comics (which I'm pretty sure are Canon), bug I'm sure there are some easy ways to get around those little plot holes.

Mephiles is short for Mephistopheles a demon in german folklore if I am right. I think it was german folklore, because he appeared in Goethes Faust. As long as you don't copy the look of Mephiles everything should be fine. Also this name had been used in many other things like Ao No Exorcist or Diablo 2 even though mostly with the short form Mephisto.
