Ever since becoming Catholic, I have quit porn completely and I struggle against masturbation with all my strength. I purposely dont even allow myself to glance at a woman lustfully, and I will look away quickly if I find myself being tempted. I don’t consume any media that is remotely sexual. Doing these things has helped me to stop thinking about sex “all the time.” It’s always going to be a struggle, but there ARE good ways to fight the sin of lust. Have faith. I’ve been studying psychology and human nature for several decades, and have been practicing as a psychotherapist for nearly as long. I’ve worked with countless men and women with sexual wounds. About 18 months ago, after 25 years away from the Church, the Holy Spirit began to move in my life. I must say, when I found Dr. West, it was like my life’s work suddenly revealed things I hadn’t been able to see before. It was like looking at one of those 2D posters at the mall (dating myself here!), which has to be seen in the right way to reveal the 3D image within it! Thank you, Dr. West, for helping others to see how all of the parts fit together, for helping others integrate the natural into the supernatural, for providing a coherent pathway toward a better understanding of God!

I just started reading “Man and Woman He Created Them, a Theology of the Body”!!!
What a great validation to hear that men search for God, this Triune Love, in searching for the human (signifying) love between man and woman (who are both body and spirit). The Spirit, The breath of life in us from God! God creating the soul of man through and in the marital act to beget more life -to then be loved by its parents! It’s a perfect mirror of God with all of us. This video is a great synthesis of all this book contains (of what I have read so far)!

Men have 20 times the testosterones as a woman, thats biggest factor -Also other factors - obviously women pay the higher cost in sexual union with pregnancy - My wife will say sometimes "I just don't get?" - she's never denied me sex and enjoys it when do it, but she'll say "just let me know when you what to do it." Because she doesn't really think about, unless we don't do it for couple weeks.

This might be dragging it too far. If you are saying that men's desire for sex necessarily means that they are looking for God, Paul's case for celibacy crumbles, the sacredness of monogamy crumbles. It remains a mystery how sexuality works prior to the fall and this tendency to over beautify sexuality is just as dangerous as neglecting or avoiding it. The reason why men seek out sex is because they actually desire a relationship, and it is the covenantal relationship between a husband and a wife that reflects the beauty of the covenant between Jesus and the Church. Sexual expression is designed as a physical dimension of that covenantal union between a husband and a wife that doesn't continue into eternity. Though the emotional and Spiritual fruits may, the it is nevertheless temporal, and there is no need to overly glamorize it as to say looking tor sex is looking for God

I love this reframing of what the sexual urge is all about. It redirects me in such a way as to move me out of shame for my sexual urges and into understanding the original goodness of sex as God created it. This "loop" converts my sexual urges into a spring board to bring me back into union with God, as well as communicating to me that my sexuality is good. I do not agree with Chris' theological statement that "The Father is forever generating the Son." If the Son preexisted all things and created all things, then the Son was never "generated", nor does he require any type of "generation". I think at best, this statement is poorly worded and at worst, is heretical. I can't believe Chris is really saying that the Son is being "generated" in the sense that I heard it but I think he needs to rethink the way this idea is being expressed. Still love the presentation and thank you Chris for this amazing reframing of our sexuality as men. I work in a prison ministry and plan on taking your "referaming" on this topic to the weekly group meeting with they inmates, many of which struggle with sexual addiction.

"The Son’s being begotten does not mean that His deity is less than His Father’s but means that He receives His personal subsistence from the Father. The divine essence itself is not begotten. Instead, in eternal generation the Father communicates the divine essence to the Son; Father and Son possess the same essence, without change.
And this generation must be eternal. The generation of the Son could not happen at a moment in time, for if it did, the Son would not be eternally the Son-nor would the Father be eternally the Father. If the Son’s generation were a singular event, this would mean that God in some sense changes. If the Father ever became the Father, or the Son ever became the Son, then God would not be immutable (that is, unchangeable). Because the Son of God never changes, His begetting must be an eternal begetting-it is not something that happened a long time ago or once-for-all. It is a timeless, placeless, changeless communication from the Father to the Son."

Perhaps this explanation works within sacramental marriage where a husband is constantly thinking of sex with his wife, but more generally sorry this is not how most might use this knowledge. I’d wager the vast majority of men thinking of sex are not seeking God, they are falling prey to lust, a cardinal sin. So instead of repenting of their lustfulness in confession, now after viewing this video men will justify their lust as some preprogrammed God seeking behavior?

This fundamentally does not, and cannot track with what you are saying -- which is: to crave sex means you're looking to participate in The Devine. You would have been closer to the truth to assert that men might mistake sex for *intimacy* and therefore feel deep love before, during or after the act. But the appetite for the act of sex, is like hunger: an appetite and furthermore *and a biological imperative*. While there are some aspects of marriage that are analogous to Christ and the Church..a natural sexual appetite in and of itself is NOT spiritual. Proof of this is that while you're having sex with your wife/gf/fiancé..you aren't thinking about God lol and I'd argue that if you are that that would be weird. You're wholly focused on your partner. Another example would be if you're playing a competitive game of basketball you're thinking about the required strategy to win and how to help your teammates reach that goal (winning)..you aren't out there dribbling and praying and contemplating The Divine.
Something can be beautiful and be a gift from God, but in and of itself NOT be spiritual (like a beautiful sunset for instance).
I'll end with saying that narratives like this do very little to help people in a practical sense. It might make oneself *feel* spiritual to project a deeper meaning to something. I think a far more helpful narrative would be to give advice for how to better emotionally and sexually connect with a spouse, not this Spiritual mumbo-jumbo.

Physical things can be measured and quantified - Spiritual things move our emotions in ways that can’t be measured.
Music can be measured and quantified, but the difference between a piece of music that moves us to tears and one that does nothing for us cannot… one piece of music may have major emotive value to one person, and yet be meaningless to another.
