Due to my limited budget, Boltgun was the only game released in 2023 that I actually bought in that calendar year. Fortunately I'm a 40K grognard and classic Doom (and it's modding scene) is my favorite game of all time so it was money well spent.
Please if you love the boomer shooter genre and have some additional coin in 2024 try cultic. All I can think of while playing boltgun is how cultic is genuinely a masterpiece of the genre.
I think the decision to reset your weapons at the beginning of every chapter is in there pretty much for the same reason the game is split up into three separate chapters at all: It's a deliberate throwback to Doom and Duke Nukem, which did the same thing. Granted, that doesn't make it a good reason in this day and age, there were reasons they HAD to do that and they don't apply today, but it can be interesting to see them take away all the player's usual toys and see how we do with a lighter loadout again.
Boltgun is one of my favorite games in recent years. The movement and weapons feel so good. I've beat the game on the hardest difficult several times as well as the DLC. The game rules

Nice I am definetly going to give this one a try as I am a huge Doom fan from back in the day and the recent reboots were cool but I miss the old aesthetic sometimes.

You have been cranking out some good stuff recently, thank you. I am very much looking forward to the Space Marine 2, and might replay the original this summer.
This game is awesome, I was excited when I first saw the trailer and preordered it. I had no idea about the DLC until recently and had to get it. 29 campaign levels and horde move is pretty beefy for its price. I love this game so much I even have it for the switch. Hope they make a sequel with multiplayer or more DLC for the first game. I recommend increasing the pixel count in the graphics setting to give the game a more polished look.
Already bought the dlc but dnf. I really like the movement, reminds me on old Arena Shooter. You could go fast paced through the level sometime just stopped by looking for buttons😅 The Level Design from point of the story and progress is good, the visuals/models
Since you mentioned it here at the start: I started experiencing very drastic FPS drops after installing the DLC. For me, this was fixed by adding "-d3d12" to the launch options found within the steam game properties. Completing horde mode on Exterminatus difficulty was completely impossible before implementing this fix. :D
Its honestly surprising that they pretty much nailed the way an old school doom game should feel, wrapped it into w40k universe and added plenty of minute details like your footsteps, taunts and idle animation And their previous release was a beer brewing simulator 😁 Well done by the devs
Just started playing this yesterday. It's ok so far. I'm going to keep playing it after watching this review to see if I'm doing something wrong. Maybe I'm too early in the game.
Even though I felt the base game got a tad repetitive, I thoroughly enjoyed it and can say it deserves to stand in the category of good WH40K games! Haven’t played the dlc yet. But will one day
Its a really solid shooter, with a lot of modern first person shooters having high mobility really injects the games with that sort of energy and you can get into a zen state. With this one it was key to keep moving lest you get swarmed by nurgling, also screw those Chaos chosen!
Just rolled the credits on the DLC. I put this game off for far too long. But in the wake of Space Marine 2, i was riding that 40k high. Glad i was because this game was truly special. Its not the best game ever, definitely could use some improvement in variety. But the fact remains this is one if the best Warhammer videogames period. Top5 easy, Top3 for me. Capping off my playthrough rewatching your reviews. Probably gonna start Rogue Trader or Daemon Hunter:Chaos Gate next. Hope youre doing well!
Also, jumped straight in to Exterminatus. It was brutal for a couple fights, and The DLC was a challenge in a lot more spots. But overall just don't stop moving and the challenge significantly decreases. Still felt the Emperor's Might flowing through me though. Lmao
No spoilers here. Space Marine 2 is will take place 100 years after Space Marine 1, so it will be interesting to see if anything from Bolt Gun will be referenced in Space Marine 2 with such a time gap.
Space Marines have pretty insane lifespans and on the scale of W40K 100 years is nothing so it's perfectly possible. Hell, even a lot of the normal humans in it can very easily live several hundreds of years through expensive rejuvenant treatments.
Well, comparing your weapon strenght against enemy toughness is mechanic lifted stright from from tabletop. Older edition had whole table, more modern ones use (a bit) simpler system where if STR is equal to enemy T, "to wound" roll is scccesfull on +4 on d6, if greater, on +3 and if twice or more greater, on +2 ( and reverse is also true, so if enemy T is greater, you wound them on +5, and if twice greater, on +6).
Certainly not perfect but I love Boltgun and its recent DLC. Still enjoy a play through every so often. I think the dev team got a lot of the gameplay fundamentals absolutely spot on. Easy 8/10 for me. For the Emperor!
I played this game, because of following Under the Mayo and getting into classic boomer shooters…. And then I read the entire Horus Hersey, haha. The Emperor Protects!
I love this game, shotgun and a chainsword, yeee hah! I have a PC and a Xbox copy, game is awesome if you love that old Hexen, OG Doom, OG Wolfenstein, Quake games, Duke Nukem, OG Shadow Warrior. LOL I love using the controller with this game. Tips: - You can use the chainsword like a grapple so you can make those impossible jumps as long as your chainsword has a target. - If you melee enemies may drop armour pts. You shoot enemies they may drop health pts ;p
The thing no one else tends to talk about is the fact you can slide the graphics down to look like near enough 8bit, and all the way up to a decent modern shooter.
Played this in gamepass 2 months ago. It was good fun for 1-2 hours but after that I lost interest. Sadly none of the levels had anything worth remembering.
I've had this same feeling for many boomer shooters. They look cool and pull me in but after a couple of hours they just get repetitive. I guess the novelty wore off.

Space Marine 2 looks entirely seperated, so I'd be surprised if we got any more story about Graia past explanations of where Titus has been the last couple hundred years.
I really want to play this one but I am worried about motion sickness. Some of those old-style FPS games are messing me up. I have Ion Fury and the game is awesome but I play 10 mins and then I feel like throwing up for the next 30 mins. Tried to play Half-Life Blue Shift recently - same thing. Turning off cam-shake and head bobbing, had no effect. I think Ion Fury also has field of view setting I've changed but that didn't work either. I can watch videos of those games with no problem but playing them is a different thing. I also want to play Fortune's Run but I am 99% sure it will give me a bad case of vomitvision.
I stick to what I'm good at which usually involves just a time investment to master. There's plenty of genres, especially in the competitive space, that I'm not good at in any sense.
The game is too long. I enjoyed the first few levels. But when I realized every level offered nothing new except a different map, it became a repetitive slog that I got sick of

I'm less inclined to look for goodies if I know it'll only be useful in the level I'm currently playing. And the bosses suck. Just straight up. Their health pool is way too massive and they send endless minions your way making what could be an awesome one on one a total slog. And if you don't have a warp grenade for the boss fight you're in for a world of shit. Always save the warp grenade for a boss fight. Always!
