Need a blow through carb to run boost over 7 psi otherwise you just push the fuel back to the tank

There is actually no difference in carburetors in turbo use.... you just put pressure lines to float bowls and fuel pump and regulator that keeps fuel going in the carb... pitot tube would be good too to have... my turbo cbr has single carb blow through system with s&s super e carburetor....

@@NitroGnomenot true in most cases. There are modifications in the carb and there needs to be increased fuel pressure to match and compensate boost of fuel will not flow.

Carburetor is just carburetor, pressurizing carburetor is done with pitot tube, that goes to vent line of fuel bowl, then fuel pressure regulator which has pressure compensator line keeps fuel pressure above boost pressure with fuel pump... You also can do this without pump, you need to pressurize fuel tank with boost pressure (which is not very good solution for cars) usually best solution is to try stock jets with pitot tube, because pitot tube makes more pressure than boost it self and forces bit more fuel out the carb... Just did this for my bike.... Only mod to the carb was re-jetting carb for e85 and put pitot pressure line to carb vent line.... Nothing special

43:00 in real life when you unplug the vacuum line from a working healthy turbo it maxes out the boost. Been there done that a bunch of times on a bunch of different cars and it's worked the same every time, the boost pegs. So something is wrong with the turbo system they built for this test.
I haven't made it there yet, however I was just judging by the size of the turbo, that 350 won't send enough exhaust through it to make any boost....
@@ryurc3033 The thing is that it is still true to the myth as the fleetliner had a engine smaller than the 350 and it looked like it had a big for that engine anyways and most likey did have enough exhaust gas to even spin that turbo properly so in my eyes it's very true to the myth
@@thatsimracer666 for sure, you won't find me defending any of the f&f franchise cars...... besides Sean's 72 Monte Carlo in Tokyo drift. They actually built one with a serious big block, that was actually a cool car that deserved way way more attention than opening chase smash up.

worst part is that it was only making 2psi with that wasgate regulating and only 7 when completely shut. those 350 can displace quite a bit of air, they did something wrong or just staged and fake

@@iq5992i pains me to watch... So much fake or just general weirdness. All that work and only get to 130mph, that's a smidge over 200kph if I'm not mistaken. I lost my licence in a 2.0tdi passat with 109bhp, did 160kph past the police (got it up to 180 just before). I have had cars with 150-160bhp do over 200 and only running out of gears. My old Volvo from 01 would only stop at what I dared to do or had road to, got it at most up to 270. Than I saw a police car in the 80 zone I was in. Car only had a stage 1 tune and 320bhp out of the only brand to ever mount a straight 6 transverse in a car and also only to have it twin turbo at the same time.
Well landrover got the same Volvo engine in the Freelander 2, was when ford owned both land rover and Volvo
My current Audi A8 3.3tdi V8 even stock would cruise at 240kph right at the limit set in the ECU. Only got 226hp stock 400 or so lb/f, 560nm.
So how they can't get more out of that car is beyond me. Just with a plain carb, tuned ofcouse. New exhaust, electronic dizzy. The works. I installed some cheap easy electronic ignition dizzy for an old landrover series 2 from 62. 2¼L. New ignition and it went from barely running and slow, horrible response to so snappy and well manageable I could set the idle down to 180-220rpm cold. Just turning the crank with a ratchet would start it before you would almost need to use starting fluid to start the engine. And it sounded like some weird rx7. With the brapbrapbrapbrap aggressive idle and everything 🤣 very disappointed by mythbusters nowadays

Sad part is most Most modern cars have a cutoff/governor just under 130mph 😅 I have tested this on a bunch cars 😂... hence y I like my older cars and standalone lol

this engine is a smog engine, it doesn't breathe for shit to begin with.
When you have two good mechanics and top custom car builder and they don't size the turbo for the engine or even make a exhaust manifold thats right (who puts a 90 into a turbo from one side) you know it was all for TV (3psi...you would make more power with just NOS alone)

even so, the rat trap trick is odd. why not try a "non-return valve" ? i mean, if all you care about is flow direction, that's a part that should be rather easy to get.
Finally a show about a group of people that hot rod cars, who have clearly never turned a wrench in their life
Well, this episode is complete ass, but Bisi? That's the dude behind Bisimoto. Faye? Her builds were pretty epic long before she got picked up for All Girls' Garage. Point being...they *could* build something worthwhile but instead they slapped a giant turbo on a late 70s 350, somehow had it set up to build so little boost a properly tuned intake manifold could outperform it and called it a day.
You must not know who Faye is then. Look her up she has done some crazy things to cars. She knows what she is doing
Bisi has built some of the fastest world record drag cars since the 90s you goofball 🤦

fun fact, the car dom is driving has 2 gearboxes, the second was an old tractor 1-1 forward reverse box. so when it is reversed, you still have all the gears from the primary box. so that reverse finish line speed was legit. cuba they built with what they had, that's why it has a marine turbo on it too.

I just rewatched the movie scene. They said in the movie that the motor was from a boat, not just the turbo. And they were talking about a different car. Not the one he uses in the race
The people doing the build really did a great job. The show does have that old Mythbusters vibe to it, too.
In the racing community we have a scramble button, but the rat trap idea was so genius and simple, those gains are very respectable.
Pneumatic solenoid then? This allows both opening and closing the pressure line electronically and can be programmed to ease up if engine values go to about to explode range.

Its a turbonetics. Its a aftermarket tuning turbo. So even the turbo is a lie in this show.

amazing how much that turbo looks exactly like the new one that was on the table. Ive been wrenching for 30yrs. I cant understand why those smoke machines just now became a thing. I built one myself, and cant understand why it took so long. All those old ass jeeps and eagles with 1000 vacuum lines. 1 of the coolest tools I didn't know I needed.

They have a very weak 3 psi spring in the wastegate, the wastegate is probably blowing open from the exhaust manifold pressure alone when they remove boost pressure from the upper chamber of the wastegate. Also, it is possible that their BOV had a very low pressure spring in it as well, and without boost pressure helping to hold it closed on the top of the BOV diaphragm, boost pressure in the upper intercooler pipe is blowing the BOV open. Pretty sure the car in the movie didn't have a BOV. So, did they intentionally bust the myth by putting a very low pressure spring in the wastegate, and perhaps by adding the BOV that wasn't in the movie so they could "solve" the problem with the rat trap?

FTR, I owned a hand me down 73 orange Monte Carlo with a white vinyl roof. Mine had a bigger V8 & was very speedy. Replaced it with a new 1978 Volvo 242 GT (a fool painted chocolate brown - so it was a true sleeper). I love seeing Bisi! He’s magic!

that big turbo should have made a lot more pressure than 7psi... whats that, less than 0.5 bar? With a turbo that size you should be pushing at least 30-40psi of boost.
I know this is a proof of concept, but they should have did it right, it would be way more spectacular to see that engine blow up at 40psi :D but yeah, safety concerns.

My 2 cents Remove all rear glass, rear trunk, rear bumper and lights
Welded diff= locker, * cut all the trunk floor, get rid of spare tire and assembly.
Make a frame to hold rear 10 gallon gas tank
Drop the front suspension That will make it faster
I think the Idea was that the turbo was SIMILAR to what would be found on a marine diesel. But I was disappointed at the boost: a turbo-diesel will easily get 20-30 psi boost. Maybe because the air intake on a diesel is unencumbered by carburator, etc. ?

They did not use the turbo they "found", they took that turbonetics turbo you saw on the table and reliced it to look used. They also kept the boost under 8 psi to work with the factory ring gap, and with the wet nitrous setup and only a 50 shot, this engine was never going to blow up.
It obviously has a 7psi wastegate spring. Put 30psi spring in it
3 psi, which is why it doubled to 7 without a reference line.

I've hit 130mph in a '95 dodge neon non-turbo with a stock 5speed manual . And 145mph in a stock '71 chevy nova with a 307 sbc with a 350 automatic powerglide, Non -turbo. Sooo..... what are they doing wrong. They have nitrous and a turbo and still couldn't go as fast as a stock engine with only a modified exhaust.
It's a *broken down* 73 monte carlo. By juicing, converting to turbo, and blocking the wastegate, they took an old beat up car that can barely run and brought it to the original limit of its transmission, which by the way is probably working like dogshit the whole time.
Not to mention the aerodynamics. When go you over 50, aerodynamics matter, and they threw that shit straight out the window.
I can remember catching a ride back from Montreal doing 120 MPH and it was all block, no turbo or nitrous

"7 psi, is respectable for that size turbo"... in what world? Since we don't have wheel specs, or housing info it is probably made to flow high volume at relatively low boost... but that would be 7 psi on the low setting, 15 psi on a street / strip setup, and 20+ psi on race gas.

One thing to note You could tweak that emmisions system exasut into Antilag sytem for a turbo
I guess Fuel feed is not enough for this build, i have managed to forget attaching that wastegate tube to my 2 liter subaru once, it gone relatively crazy like blowoff valve making supta tototo s 😂, and it was definitely going better. I luckily realized what was "wrong" before managing my 4th cylinder fly off 😅😅

my volvo 850 has a TCV, if you disconect the hose that controls the wastegate it just builds boost until ecu cuts it

As soon as I seen the movie clip I knew it was going to introduce a boost leak, don't know how one of the biggest automotive franchises overlooked simple things like this.
Those boost levels were a joke at best.

Also bore and cut thru the engine block about 3/4 pipe fitting MIP as similar to turbo of the Raleigh Junkyard turbo where I salvage and remove the Mustang vintage turbo and paid the salvage yard owner but now the yard was bankrupted and moved away and retired.
Most cars have a max boost safety were it cuts the pressure at certain psi. But yeah you can remove that if you tinker whit the ecu.

You guys did it backwards, you slam the waste gate, then hit the NOS to help mitigate the excess heat from the higher psi

I was doing these boost experiments when i was 16 years old, they weren’t experiments as much as I gave it more boost.
man the front rides way too high, very bad for going fast. which was mysteriously fixed on the actual day lol, but the back suspension is still too soft so the front is still high.
Coming from a gay that owned a 76 monte carlo landau, cammed 350 swapped to 4 barrel and headers with 305 hwy gears, 135 was easy. Not so much once I went 383 and 373's. Hate that I sold it. Land yachts are beautiful!

Well, only one slight issue I see here, the car seen in the movie used a massive diesel turbo with a lot more boost pressure, but apart from that.

My stock 350 in my 75 Monte Carlo went about that same speed with out N2O or a turbo, too bad they really don't know much about turbo's or they would have changed out the waist gate springs to increase boost.
