- This video is about the cost of living in Brazil in 2025. I live in the south of Brazil with my wife and daughter and in this video I will share with you our monthly living expenses to give you a feel for how much it costs to live in Brazil. Obviously the cost of living will depend on a number of factors and this video is just an example.
About me: I am Swedish and I moved to Brazil over 5 years ago and on my channel I share my experiences of living in the South of Brazil.

If you're earning in Real, the cost of living is a nightmare. If you're earning in Dollar or Euro, you'd live like royalty. Great video, btw.
Very true!
I agree if you got an American dollar and have a good income, you will live well in any City in Brazil
Great video. You should do a video explaining prices to buy an apartment, rent apartment in city center, as well as towns just outside the city. Doing this for SP, Rio, floripa, etc would be great and would help people understand the prices to buy and rent
That's a great idea, I'll add it to my list of videos to make
I agree , even a video on buying apartments at planta and how it all works here if you have an idea
Your vid confirmed my estimates and some living experience here in S.C. Thanks! I know Brasil is a huge country, and it's always unwise to generalize. That said, though people here have strong feelings about government, corruption, costs, violence, etc. it seems there is generally a higher level of happiness, less materialism, and a focus on the simpler enjoyments of life, such as love, friends, family, food, music, beach, nature. I've read and sensed that the very wealthy people here are another story entirely... Not sure if you've done a focused vid on this, but would love to hear more of your thoughts about the value of "resetting" when moving here from US or Europe.
Good ideas. I will try to do a video about this!
You should put "IPTU" monthly based too. Excelent video
missing IPVA as well, he has a car so need to pay it
True I missed out iptu and ipva
My friend thank you I'm hoping in the future heading to southern brazil living in a town and living my days in peace
Nice. Lots of options in Brazil unlike say Poland unless your cool with learning another language.
Say from Poland to Italy.
Sounds like a good plan!
Great, thanks!
You're welcome!
Yes! Property tax & Fire Department annual fee are missing.
True, thanks for the correction
Nice video, a video on investing here in Brazil, stocks, cdbs, renda fixa and all that would be great
as IBGE only 6,7% (14 million) of Brazil population earns more than 12k BRL and can afford this amount
True, but they are a couple. You still right. You have to earn more than 10k reais to live a reasonable middle class life in Brasil.
We live in SP interior. Expenses are pretty much on point. Except creche is 2k and you forgot IPTU and IPVA
True, I forgot iptu and ipva
I guess 'creche' is a day care center in American English.
That's an expanse way higher than most people can afford in the whole country, specially when you don't have rent to pay.
Yes, and it's still so much cheaper than all first world countries, for an overall nicer life in many ways.
Ofc it is. Which is great because you know that you have room to reduce your expenses if you need to
@@RuuyGActually It's not cheaper as few Brazilians earn $10000+ reis a month.
With everything being equal you're still better off being low to middle-income in the United States earning dollars.
However if you can bring your dollar based income with you aka location independent income then yes Brazil is better overall.
@@BasedInBrazil Very few people can bring their dollar based income with them abroad. Specially now that companies in the USA are either laying off or making remote workers come back to the office. It's mostly retirees who can move abroad these days and a tiny number of self employed digital workers.
@@BasedInBrazil What % of Brazilians earn 10k + BRL a month?
Thanks for the informative video Question - are organic fruits, veggies and meat available ?
I live in Minas Gerais, close to the capital, and the cost of living is much lower. Considering the middle/upper-middle class lifestyle, as you described, expenses can be even lower. There are some advantages of living in Brazil that you can explore to further reduce costs in the medium and long term. For example, you can install a photovoltaic power plant, and the return on investment is relatively fast. You can also switch from using gas for cooking to using electric induction systems. In some cities, like mine, water treatment is done by a public company, and you don't pay for using it or pay very little. In my case, there is no cost, perhaps because I live on top of an aquifer. Regarding health insurance, if you live in a small city, you will practically not need to use it. For example, I have Bradesco Saúde, and I can say that 90% of the time I go to the health clinic that is 5 minutes from my house, and I am treated by excellent doctors. I'm only looking for the plan for specialties that would normally take longer to receive care through the SUS (more for convenience).
I studied in public and state schools for elementary and high school, and for undergraduate and graduate degrees at a public university. But a good option for education is the federal institutes, which are recognized for the quality of their teaching.
But as you said, Brazil is big and you'll find many quality options based on the cost range you're willing to pay.
Thanks for the detailed information! You've provided some great insights.
From public schools to Federal Universities. You’ve got to be smart. From what I understand about the educational system in Brazil most students in Federal Universities come from private schools.
@@radioflashinfo That's a great point! In fact, most students don’t come from public schools because many of them are underfunded and struggle with quality. That being said, we do have some excellent municipal and state public schools as well. Federal institutes and military schools are fantastic alternatives to private education, often providing students with a much stronger high school foundation. It’s always interesting to discuss these different perspectives-thanks for bringing this up!
What city is that? It looks so nice. Been to Brazil many times and never seen a grocery store and house like that.
great video.
Thanks!
im planing on investing in the Kuwaiti dinar because $1 of the Kuwaiti dinar = $18 R and then ill be able to move to brazil faster i am going to do the golden visa so buy a house of my own then move there , im very excited that i found out about the Kuwaiti dinar because now its going to be way faster then usa money and more money to live on , i enjoy watching your videos they are very helpful
Sounds like a great plan!
Will you ever buy a more modern larger home? I’m considering moving to the south of Brazil but want a new condominium or home.
I think I will probably build a new home eventually. I want to design it in a more European style.
450 reais per month for a cleaner, once a week is cheap. You can more than double that for São Paulo city.
True, Sao paulo will be a lot more expensive
It also depends on the size of the house, and how much time they will work.
The going housekeeping rate in SP ranges from 150 to 300 Brazilian Real, depending on the size of the house or apartment.
Thanks for the info!
thanks
You're welcome!
@@nordicinvestor Welcome where? Can I bring some beer?
Thanks for this great video! I was looking forward to your expenses given that your lifestyle looks similar to what I would want. Curious, what about entertainment? What about shopping? What about travel? Can I assume that your all in expenses is closer to ~$36k a year or ~$3k a month?
I did not include holiday costs, buying new furniture etc in the list. So if you include all this then it would be about $3k a month
@@nordicinvestor That makes sense. $3k for a family of 3 is beyond impressive in my view. This lifestyle in Canada would cost you ~$8k or so. That's what my close friend spends for a basic life there.
A gas cylinder indoors? your brave, my gas cylinders are outside the 🏠.
My cylinders are outside but many have it inside like the women I showed in the video
Very common in Brazil to keep the gas inside next to stove.
@nordicinvestor was born in Rio de Janeiro and live in the States now , thinking of retiring part time in Santa Catarina . Good info
Are there monthly property taxes on the house?
Iptu
Yes there is iptu which for our house is R$1000 per year ($160)
we, 4 adults and 2 children went out last night to eat in a pizzeria in a small town in the interior of the northeast. A big pizza, fries on the side, 3 big pastel, 1 liter of Coca Cola, a juice 400ml, 2 water 0,5 liters and a guarana 350ml
100 reais / 18 USD
Thats a very good price!
@ the price in Pipa for the same would be 225-250 reais / 36-45 USD
On a PPP basis, Brasil is actually quite expensive. But to echo many comments already posted, if you generate your income from a western country, you can live a pretty lavish life on a budget.
Very true!
Higher every year, the condition worsens when you realize minimum wage is 200usd
👍
Between health insurance and school fees you’re paying minimum wage for 2 Brazilians. You’re rich.
😲
I think you make a gross mistake saying trades people (electrician, etc ), food, restaurants, education, etc is cheaper here. It´s not. You must say: it´s cheaper IF you earn in dollars or Euros; for the rest of us earning in Reais, everything, I repeat, EVERYTHING, from bananas to cars, is much MUCH more expansive than it is for europeans or americans in America and Europe. How do I know? I lived in England and Portugal and Austria. (and I still remember the enormous power my wallet had over there, for example, in the supermarket). PS: If you are spending a minimum wage just in restaurants, you are pretty well off. Are you earning in Euros?
Good point. Yes I earn in euros
@@nordicinvestor of course...that explains a lot.
@@nordicinvestorDo you have to pay taxes in Brazil?
What about taxes?
I didn't want to make the video too long and talk about taxes but I did a separate video on taxes
@@nordicinvestor I understand, but shouldn't that be included in monthly cost?
@@delroywilson9588 No. Taxes are an obligation or liability against income, not a cost of living expense.
@@Kam_Abroad_FT, there are IPVA (car) and IPTU (property) to pay annually.
Why have house insurance? The house is made of bricks, and there are no natural disasters that can destroy it. Some people have house insurance when living in an apartment where they do not fully trust the constructor, and the building might be condemned. But apart from that, there is no point.
Flooding honey, have you forgotten what happened in Rio Grande do Sul?
I would say robbery, home invasion is common when you travel and is outside the house
I'm Swedish and I need insurance for everything 😂
Hi,
I am a British Citizen who is married to a Brazilian. We have two children who are 9 & 7 years old, both British citizens.
We are hoping to move to Brazil this year.
Could you please tell me whether Brazil mandates the mRNA Covid 19 vaccine for its citizens?
If we move to Brazil and apply for citizenship, would we be subject to any vaccination mandates?
No, you dont need nor is enforced. Its against the constitution. Just like in the uk or Us. However during the pandemic the government, like it happened in other countries, they were overstretching the powers.
There's none
I'm a physician in Brazil, by now most of the population just skip COVID vaccination, I see this with my own eyes
COVID is long forgotten; I dont recall any covid restrictions on migration papers.
Its not mandatory in Brazil
I will stay for 2 weeks near the joaquina beach for 2 weeks next march. Any english speakers community nearby ?
Electricity $81 because you are mining crypto?
South Brazil, heating gadgets, heating shower, 3 or more people. I live alone and my bill goes to 90 to 120 every month.
R$3.780,00 in supermarket? R$1.679,00 in restaurants?
That's a lot for 3 ppl!! You must be over spending or buying only "class A" kind of food.
Nice video btw
I find his estimates on Supermarket and restaurants very accurate actually, especially if he bundled it with daily bakery expenses (padaria). I would even go as far as saying his estimates of eating out are low depending on the type of venue you wish to dine. I do understand for the majority of Brazilians this may be high, but based on my experience that's about right for a comfortable modest living.
Thanks
You are right that its high but its actually less than what I was spending in Sweden
7000 reais just for food? What are you eating 🤨😆? Other than that, it is quite realistic. Good video.
Yeah, looks like someone is living lavishly. 😂
True I spend a lot on food but like I said its possible to spend a lot less.
@@nordicinvestor No offense, everyone should enjoy their food as long as their health allows. I only mentioned it because I personally spend little on food, but it's obviously a personal choice. Sorry if my first comment came across the wrong way.
How much cheaper is it now for someone earning dollars now that the dollar has gained against the real?
Inflation in brazil is growing at an insane rate.
4k on food? What are you eating man? Caviar and salmon everyday?😂
😂😂
