Ok so I haven't seen anyone else mention this, but when you switched to the french dub, the voice actor who portrays John is actually Bruce Willis' official stand-in dub actor. I'm impressed already!
A "genuine Die Hard experience" game where each enemy is its own unique miniboss sounds like it could be really good idea. I could see it being functionally similar to a survival horror game like Amnesia or Outlast, just with an action aesthetic.
1:15:11 Even though it gets cut off, I love this line. It’s like the game directors realized they hired a bad VA and chose to throw shade at him, as part of the villain’s final humiliation.
On the "Adapting Die Hard" segment, I recommend you look into the "Night at the Office" mod for the original half-life. It really is just die hard as a game, low enemy count, both you and the enemy die quick so you have to play smart and sneaky. Hell, the mod's plot is basically the same as the movie's.
I mentioned this in a different reply but there is a swat 3 custom mission that is a recreation of Nakatomi Plaza. I’m pretty sure there is a die hard mod/map in Duke Nukem 3d
I never expected this much "ode to joy" being played for a game about an American movie series that was taking place in Cali. Maybe it's a Die Hard thing, but I honestly felt more in the United States of Europe with how much the anthem played; even expected a "Freude, schöner Götterfunken!" to come out of my speakers.
That bit at 15:12 where the guy comes out of the stall when you're holding the other guy at gunpoint made me burst out laughing. It was some combination of the janky clipping before opening the door, his very interestingly coloured outfit and the incredibly awkward silence that was comedy gold. This is why snake videos always get my full attention and aren't just playing in the background. :P The visual gags are some of the best. Thanks for another great video!
Time Splitters not coming back and the studio closing is quite possibly the most depressing thing of 2023 for me... I'm not over it. So much anticipation and waiting all for naught... I'm extremely sad.
Hanna Gruber (daughter), Ilsa Gruber (astranged wife), Ernesto Gruber (childhood friend adopted into family), Rick Moranis (Gruber's father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate), Fluffy Grubber (the dog)... Neither one of them were seeking John for revenge or anything like that. They all just happened to be connected to the villain's plot in Die Hards 4-8, until Die Hard IX gives us the original Hans Gruber in space (or at least that's how it is in my alternative universe)
15:28 I just can't get over this moment. Part of me wonders if its deliberately scripted this way, or if the AI just had a fluke and unintenionally created a comedy bit. Add some lame punchline and a laughtrack and you basically have an SNL Skit
Reminds me of World peace sketches. Specifically Charls I think does this kind of comedy. The guy doesn't even open the door, it opens by itself, stands stone faced from the very first frame of being visible
I was thinking of what game could capture the feel of the Die Hard's overwhelming odds angle. Then i realized that Manhunt; a stealth/horror game has something close to that. Manhunt's main gameplay loop is picking off overwhelming numbers with your stealth and wits; using dark areas, throwable distractions and general strategizing to chip away the crowd. It's way of increasing difficulty, is to make it much harder to slowly pick off the overwhelming odds; with new enemy strategies such as never leaving groups, leaving guards at specific areas, simply carrying guns. Stealth is fully encouraged, as melee combat is intentionally slow and sluggish and guns HURT; you can go from full health to 40% health with one point blank shotgun shot, and automatic weapons just delete your health. Manhunt fits the overwhelming odds angle of the Die Hard quite well; tho i don't think John Mcclane would just chop a guy's head off.
I find that full health to 40% shotgun blast bit hilarious in this context. Frankly, if you’re going for realistically dangerous gun damage, taking a shotgun blast point blank should just be death.
as a gamedev student who's tried out mocap acting, directing, cleanup, and using it for 3D animation, i could immediately tell that the walk and pulling out the gun at 4:35 was mocapped. that cautious walking and strange leaning, and the way she's pulling her gun out and how the rig is barely able to follow the models. this all screams to me that they didn't have enough time to clean it up and maybe the actor themselves weren't sure how much freedom of movement they had in the suit, just that they can't let the reflection spheres be close to each other
He made two "Alan Rickman is dead" jokes in a row and I chuckled at both of them I'm not sure if I should be impressed with him or disappointed with myself
8:47 the switch up from the jank controls to the auto aim is so oddly funny to me, especially imagining its actual just instincts kicking in during a real life situation vs practice.
50:42 I actually think a really good way to adapt the Die Hard feeling of tension into a video game would be something in the style of the first Resident Evil, but instead of zombies, it's just regular armed goons. Like you could make combat a relatively rare occurrence, have the player be very vulnerable to damage, and limit the resources they have available, while they have to navigate an enclosed area solving puzzles. Most of the gameplay would be about figuring out how to get from point A to point B without being gunned down, only engaging enemies as a last resort. Bonus points if these soldiers are actually intelligent and will follow the sound of your gunshots. Yeah, this is actually an idea I've had for a while and I really want to see it done justice, but it wasn't until this segment of the video that I realized just how much it fits the spirit of Die Hard.
The voice actors sound like they are trying not to wake up their mum downstairs Edit: I just got to the xbox/ps2 section and realized I have actually played this game before. Or rather, walked around the opening area on my uncles xbox when I was like 6. That's a lifelong mystery for me solved!
I do enjoy how the (basic) story of Die Hard: Vendetta could've/would've worked as an actually quite good film plot which acted as a metacommentary on action films and the 'Die Hard' formula. Its a glorious lookback to a lost past - I wonder if we'll get an indie wave in the next decade of '2000s Movie Likes' in a similar vein to BOOMER SHOOTERS
I love the realization that Die Hard 3: On a Boat eventually did happen in the form of Dynamite Cop, which was the sequel to Die Hard Arcade, and due to licensing issues was itself a serial-number filed off game that spawned its own sequel, Asian Dynamite
That's cool, I missed that cause I really did drop out when big British comedians were doing sets about it. I do think it counts as a Christmas film besides all the gags cause even without people involveds word, why the hell not?
An hour and 20 minutes of deep diving into a weird game I know nothing about? Only an appropriate christmas gift when coming from you snake, merry christmas!

Imagine opening the door after taking a mean shit, only to see a cop wearing a wife-beater wordlessly holding your buddy hostage. I believe that the stone cold silence is absolutly the correct. What a wordful Christmas gift.
Imagine a hypothetical scenario where an executive decided he wanted a game set in a jungle environment after doing a bunch of coke and watching City of God. Of course, he didn't want to risk releasing a game without brand recognition so he chose to use an existing IP even though the character didn't fit at all. After some initial backlash, he told his team to throw in a few flashback levels that looked like the old games and then pretended that was always part of the plan. That'd be weird, right? On a completely unrelated note, Max Payne 3 sure feels different from the rest of the series.
Always wanted to play this game after seeing it in some gaming magazine back in the day, but... I think missing it and having Tehsnakerer suffer through it and tell me what's interesting about it is actually the best of all possible worlds.
Man, I love this series. It's so much fun to discover all the odd artistic choices of obscure games I've never heard heard of and never would have discovered and played myself (besides Yakuza, which I was already playing the hell out of). Come to think of it, these videos do a way better job of conveying the experience, character, and themes of their games into a digestible movie length than most actual video game movies (besides Yakuza; I think it's a stretch to call those videos "movie length"). Have a happy new year, Snake, and thanks for the Christmas present.
As someone who detests "Die Hard is a Christmas movie" jokes/non-jokes I appreciate this video. Mostly because it's not often you see someone talking about licenced-LP jank with any degree of verve. Cheers!
Man, I've got such an insane love/hate relationship with this game, sick to see it even being talked about in 2023. Way back when I was in talks with the lead programmer to do a stream together and go over each stage and ask tech questions, but that's realistically never happening sadly. To me it looks a bit like GTA3 or Vice City. The lighting and shading is very similar. Postal 2 has a bit more grit in it's textures.
And making any comparison to Postal 2 can either be a selling point or an insult depending on who you're talking to. No middle ground there. Lol
I am convinced that Snake loves the art style because it resembles the opening to Boiling Point

Got to play the die hard arcade with my dad on Christmas Day and it made me very nostalgic for this franchise. Loved this video

The NPCs in the town at the start of the video are crazy! Very cool. Idk if you worked on it but I really enjoyed Rogue Ops as a kid.
I did work on Rogue Ops too, but I only played a small part as I was producer on the PS2 version of DHV, then only acting as support where ever they needed it. The long story of Rogue Ops is an interesting one too!@@typm6196
Well, yeah, that's apparent from playing the game
@@RootVegetabIe ha, fair comment. but at least you played it. winning at life.
