The sad thing is, there are people who say things like that. Not so much about warzones as poverty, but "Just get a degree" is a surprisingly common response to any statement made about how shitty things are for poor people.
>First I give a kid two pesos >Then I go to the local bar to join the local communist party THat was one of the most rapid escalations I think I have ever seen
It was a funny comment, yes. But escalation? Lmfao. You've never been to mexico. They ask you your name, and then cut off your limbs slowly just to see who you are. Then upload it on narcosblog
My favorite part about the opening for this game is that Saul's daughter doesn't even sound scared or worried about her safety, she just sounds like she's having a moderately unpleasant time in Realia.
Fun fact: in the original version it is not some made-up country but the real Colombia. You can still see colombian insignias on government troops in western release. Dunno why they've changed the name for the western market. Don't think colombians would've been very salty about it.
The doughnut salesman wasn't an idiot. He was pretty clearly just playing dumb and had no intention of telling you anything until you bought some doughnuts.
42:29 I'm guessing it's caused by an "underflow". Basically, a constant volume reduction is applied during conversations, but if a track is already at a low enough volume, the value might become "negative", and instead of simply clamping the minimum volume to 0, it "wraps around" back to maximum. This can happen depending on how the code was written. But again, it's just a guess. IDK for sure
Unfortunately items still despawn. Hell, a whole fucking hammer full of items just went underground for me (it was not destroyed since the map clearly showed it being there). Incredibly frustrating expirience
Imagine if Saul Myers was a beer bellied couch potato instead of the hardened ex-legionnaire that he is. Isn't it more appropiate ? In game, he has 0 starting experience with every weapon and he can't run for 100 meters without wanting to sleep for the next four hours In my opinion he could have been portrayed as an unprepared yet incredibly brave man going on a trip to save his daughter. Because that's how most of the game feels and looks like.
Likely, the military backstory explains why his skills improve so quickly, he's just rusty, and a bit of hands-on experience will get him back into the swing of things. Also, the health bar shows that Saul very clearly has a beer belly.
Who says he had any military expiernece? his service on the legion may have been getting shot 5 minutes in and then got french nationality out of it, that's it.
Sebastian Arena alternatively, he could have just loitered on some base far behind the frontline for months on end until his tour of duty was up. Not everybody in the military sees combat, and somebody has to drive the trucks and keep the guys fed.
What I love is that not a single person in this game even tries to feign a South American accent, unless you count plugging their noses, and Saul Myers is supposedly French but he constantly makes references to American action movies and games, talks like an American dad, and his daughter goes from being white in the intro to a Latina in the outro. Plus the local CIA spy is so bad at his job everyone knows who he is, but they don't want to hurt his feelings so they keep pretending to be fooled.
"Saul Meyers" isn't exactly a French name. He was in the Foreign Legion so likely he's some American or Canadian expat who joined up in France for a while - when you get out you get French citizenship so he just lives there. Makes sense, I guess.
@@fuzzydunlop7928Even more, you get your citizenship if hurt in combat, which makes sense for him: He got pushed into combat, shot 5 minutes in, and then got into france without learning anything. So when he goes into this latinamerican country he doesn't even know how to hold a gun (thus he is an awful shooter) but still acts as if he was a bloody war veteran.
Fun fact: the original russian version explicitly said that the game's events take place in Columbia instead of the imaginary Realia, helicopters have the Columbian flags painted on tails, the police chief in Puerto Sombra mentions "SWAT from Bogota", and the guerilla soldiers are called "FARC troops". On the other hand Saul's wife for some reason mentioned Bolivia, which was rather jarring. Also the South Americans here act like typical ex-soviet folks.
What a time to be alive! Not only Boiling Point is about to be released on Steam and GOG, but some of the folks behind the unofficial patches for Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines are working on an unofficial patch. Meaning that this game will be more enjoyable than it ever was. I'm kinda hoping for less grindy stretch goals (or at least more ways to reach them) and a final level that's actually finishable (and maybe some logic fixes, like the final level having ammo for the guns the enemies are using). And it could become moddable. Imagine the possibilities.
AIN'T NO WAY. Did they promise unofficial patches?!? 🥹🙏 Did they already come out now that yo comment is 9 month old? And what about mod support? This game NEEDS mod support, maybe we can mod it to be sorted of spiritual successor to Far Cry 2 and FNV, sort of weird offspring 😅
I saw all your Xenus videos about 5 years ago and thought the game looked cool, but I couldn't remember what it was called until recently. I just finished playing through it and LOVED it. Thanks for the awsome videos Tehsnakerer!!!!
I've played this underrated game myself and noticed there are a few things you either didn't get exactly right with this review or I'd like to offer feedback on: 13:22 - There is one way you can make some decent money with hunting and fishing, but it's a bit out-of-the-way and not well-advertised within the game. There are a couple Aboriginal Medicine Men in the tribal areas if you can find them. They offer some good cash for the bodies of Fishes, Birds, Rats, and the claws of Jaguars you kill. Otherwise, you have to sell animal corpses and jaguar claws to the weapon smugglers at gas stations for a pittance. 16:10 - The Guerillas aren't the only faction to offer free medical treatment if Saul's hit points aren't full. Any faction that offers medical treatment will fully restore Saul's hitpoints for free if Saul's reputation with that faction is high enough. The Guerillas just need the lowest reputation score of all the factions to get that benefit. However, no faction resets Saul's addictions for free, just for cheaper the higher Saul's reputation is. 16:33 - The "Synthetic Adrenaline" produced and sold by the Mafia in this game actually needs multiple doses at a time to be effective. It messes up your aim but makes Saul move faster and his enemies move a little more slowly. 16:52 - There is a way, unlike in Far Cry 2, to restore Saul's reputation with most factions that hate him. There are NPCs at bars or near bars who will take money to increase Saul's reputation with a faction if it's in the negative. You can also donate money at the Puerto Sombra bank to increase reputation with the Civilians, including getting free medical care at the Puerto Sombra hospital. 23:53 - Your way of clearing indoor environments very slowly and carefully is actually realistic. Doing it quickly is best left to professional teams in real life, and Saul's always by himself. The usefulness of grenades in closed areas in this game is also realistic too. 24:16 - When I played this game, the way to determine whether a kill was actually stealthy was to see if the "silent kill headshot" message appeared at the upper left-hand corner of the screen when Saul killed an NPC. This generally works only if you aim for the head (unless you use the silenced pistol or the crossbow on an unarmoured enemy) with a gun or knife and the corpse isn't seen by someone else. Otherwise stealth isn't that useful in this game. 26:20 - "The map of Realia is dangerous." I like this design decision myself. This game really makes you afraid of the jungle when you have to walk through it for long stretches. Enemies and hostile animals really could be hiding behind every leaf out there. 31:38 - Getting stung by bees is actually one of the funnier things in this game. You should have mentioned the "pickle jar" item in this game that is thrown like a grenade but instead summons a bee swarm out of nowhere once it hits the ground to attack one nearby enemy. 32:34 - I actually like the harsh penalty for death in this game since it forces you to play more carefully. Death is too cheap in the GTA series most of the time. 40:35 - You actually don't have to "Confirm" each inventory item move. Just keep moving items to or from Saul's inventory and undo the moves if you want by clicking on the "X" mark next to the "Confirm?" sign. The checkmark next to the "Confirm" dialogue only needs to be pressed once to show the game that you're satisfied with the inventory moves you've made. The same is true of selecting components to use for weapon modding and repairing, so you can select more than one component to be added to a weapon at a time. Also, looting corpses is easier if you use the function keys, with each item corresponding to which function key outlined in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. 41:21 - This is an interesting bit of AI on the developers' part. Occasionally a soldier nearby will complain about rats and shoot one. Apparently some of the soldiers are keeping a running tally of how many they can kill. Best thing about that is you can take the rat's corpse and sell it. 51:15 - Saul Myers is probably the first open-world FPS protagonist to be able to knock enemies over by actually hitting them with a thrown grenade! Thanks a lot for this detailed review. This game deserves more attention.
I completely forgot about the pickle jar! It's been years since i played the game, but i still remember taking the bus as a free vehicle. Also, what was the deal with tanks in this game? I couldnt figure out how to get the training for them. I think i found a few just randomly sitting in the jungle.
This looks like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. that was swallowed by Far Cry whom in turn was swallowed by the first Deus Ex. No wonder it was an interesting game, it borrowed the best (And worst) aspects of those games.
I think Far cry 2 captures the feeling of being in a very hostile land as well. With a simple realistic damage tweak, the game becomes truly immersive.
Got the patchnotes? Tried to get these patches and extract readmes from them to no vail. Remember gems like "dogs cast shadow now" and "fixed size of the moon".
This was great! Personally I really got into this game about 10 years ago. While it was janky as hell, it was also really awesome in so many ways - as you mentioned, it felt kind of "real", despite having cut-and-paste scenery. I enjoyed it so much I tried to do as many side quests as possible. I made sure not to piss off the bandits and CIA until I had a chance to do all their missions, since they're the only ones you can't bribe to get their rep back up (the major factions - military, rebels, mafia - can be sorted out by visiting their rep in the local pub, and either paying some cash or doing some additional mission to get their rep back up). Also faction rep is the main reason to go stealth: Normally, killing someone immediately affects faction rep (both positive + negative); however, if you manage to kill someone without being spotted, then there's no negative rep from it! Completing a mission will still net you negative rep with the faction it was against - apparently someone always snitches - but having all those kills not count against you makes a huge difference. Unfortunately by "without being spotted" this actually means "do not get spotted AT ALL" during the mission - if you're busted just once - even if you're on friendly terms with them and they see you and you do nothing to them - if you then try to "go into stealth" and take out someone completely silently, it won't actually count as "stealth", as in all kills will still count against you. The knife is mega-janky and therefore almost useless for stealth. Silenced weapons can be OK, and you can silence EVERYTHING in this game somehow. Any assault rifle, smg, pistol, sniper, etc. can be 100% silenced by simply buying the "subsonic" ammo... Unfortunately that STILL doesn't quite cut it, unless you're always 100% accurate, because if you miss then they'll hear the bullet hitting something next to them... What DOES work though is the crossbow - they don't tend to notice when you miss with it (at least not as much), and it's a 1-hit-kill weapon even on the hardest difficulty level, for the vast majority of human enemies, provided you can get a headshot. Of course the crossbow takes practice due to the shot dropping off so quickly, so you need to aim higher to compensate, but man is it worth it... I managed to score a crossbow with a scope already on it from some mission. Can't recall which one it was - I think it was the last mission of one of the rebels... Either that or one of the Indians. Also about the microphone - it's used almost exclusively by the CIA guy in the second town - and he's fucking hilarious. Most of his missions are stealth ones, snapping photos and/or eavesdropping with the mike. Anyway, good take on what I consider a "hidden" classic - a janky-as-hell but very interesting game that gets level design right such that the areas look like they make sense. Well except for the random gunfights which seem to ALWAYS occur across a road (though they're great for getting craploads of weapons to sell for 10 pesos each or something). And though I didn't cheat for 99% of the game on the hardest level - I'm pretty sure I cheated somehow right at end to get through it. That last battle sucks balls.
he hit boiling point when someone _called his damn phone,_ and he stayed there the entire game, he just wanted to tell his daughter to NEVER call him while he was playing DRIVER 3. He's the epitome of "gamers rise up".
No thats the one injury thats cheap to fix here. I mean we by nature are really good at dodging bullets, but hey; everyone gets caught of guard sometimes.
I finally beat the game in normal difficulty after some 25 hours of gameplay. Having seen it all, I can say that Snake here took the worst course of action possible to get to the ending. One of the major problems with his experience is that he didn't check the objectives tab more often, every bit of information can be awarded free of charge, one can actually beat the game spending less than 10,000 freaking pesos, hell, with less than fucking 5 thousand is possible ( in theory) . Don Pedro is the worst option since his services cost some 20 thousand on average. Missions strands as stated here have gradual rewards so that mean you will spend so much time grinding on 10 minute missions that pay shit. Money is better spent on equipment and upgrades and faction relations which are really helpful, I would recommend buying every gun and some high tier upgrades for them, having more options in combat is really great. Stealth is good and even though it is difficult it is faster than a good old shootout. Regarding the factions, it it best to switch sides constantly, the free of charge info is sometimes given by rivaling factions so fixing faction relations in the bar is essential and less grindy than going to Pedro. Also never buy cars, stealing a Heru by killing the driver will net you with the best car in the game, the other cars are not worth it; copters are too flimsy and slow, sports cars get damaged with every single bump in the road. Another tip is not using syringes at all, doughnuts are the best healing item, fruits are too heavy. Also dont buy the Steyr AUG, worst rifle in the game with its faulty sights. Best rifle is the FAMAS. Also start the side mission with the old man in Pueblo Faro to get some 4 thousand pesos, the treasure respawns every time so dont finish the quest, it is not that practical since the Anticuario is in Puerto Sombra but it's helpful nonetheless. Overall, I had an amazing time with this, there were times where I was thinking in frustration how much better could this game be, but generally I was immersed and amused with everything the game threw at me. If you want to play it and be one of the few western people that actually beat this go and download it, you'll have a great time. I downloaded my copy from Blizzboys, you have to remove the malware in the setup and you are good to go.
Fair dos man, I played through this awkwardly. I wasn't trying to misrep the game but why do you assume I wasn't checking my objectives. It has been a few years but I was, I just wound up on a very different path. I think it's a great strength of the game it can be played through more cleverly than I was capable of. These videos are my experience of a game and I still had fun on mine
Just started my playthrough but it also seems like you can avoid decreasing your faction reputation if you manage to clear out locations solely through silent headshots; something made easy with the SP ammo. So you can potentially clear missions and gain faction rep with opposing factions
Indie devs and modders should dig this game from the grave, there are so many good ideas and half baked implementations that I would love to see in other games, for example, the faction system is almost genius, never seen such a dynamic faction war feature in game like this, the fact that the player is 100 percent responsible for the factions is a little disappointing though, they could have made so that the factions actually took other freelancers and waged wars against other groups without player interaction, something like Clear Sky wouldnt be a bad addition to the system. Another good idea is your plot interpretation, its brilliant , a couch potato dad without knowledge of guns looks for his daughter in a warzone, or it can be reversed, Saul starts out as a sociopath excited for the disappearance of his daughter , he then develops an understanding of what the people of Realia endure each day and how meaningless the conflict is, either one is a good subversion of the action dad trope we are getting lately with dad action films ala John Wikis and Nobody. There are mod tools for the this, its just the fact that nobody cares enough for the it make it better. This experience could have gotten the Dream Game status for me, but the problems are so crippling that it kind of overshadows some of the good, for example, the map size is stupid big, and stupid repetitive, they could have made it smaller and added a desert area to mix gameplay up. There another myriad of problems, hell, theres a 1 hour video talking about the mistakes of the game. If only a modern release of the game popped up, with easier mod tools and an active community it would be one of the best games, but without that its a love and hate mostly hate game thats forgotten and overshadowed by others.
@@timedraven117 Thanks, Ad- Hey, you're not the Admiral! But yeah, this comment feels like something Ross would say... Maybe this game should be in a future Game Dungeon video?
I totally feel this, albeit more for the later games; it’s not that Boiling Point doesn’t need a touch up, it’s that the later two games need it more. Boiling Point feels rough but realized, it could use a touch up but works as it is; the other two, not quite as much. White Gold is certainly given charm by its jank, enough to make Snake’s vid the best of the three, but the lack of random encounters makes things less vibrant, and limits the good faction politics to very specific parts of the map or sections of the plot. I’m not against how the island setting affects resources (cars only being useful on the islands you buy them on and such); especially given how useful cars are in Boiling Point, that could’ve been interesting if White Gold had done anything with it. Precursors, on the other hand, is where the promise of the Xenus formula goes to die. What was clearly meant to be a complex galactic setting was mishandled (or likely just too ambitious for the budget) to the point where it can’t really do the Xenus stuff. Xenus in space sounds interesting in the hands of someone who could actually pull it off, though, but I’d definitely want a spiritual successor to White Gold from them first; a game where a single system of factions is scattered among several islands should be good, maybe even necessary prep before trying to do factions across star systems.
It almost killed me. I was looking around in the comments and nowhere near enough people have said anything, I think maybe only a handful of people hear it, do you by any chance have a hearing condition? Because I do, maybe that's why?
@@Bearsbarehardyarns It's the sound the game plays when a explosion occurs close to the player. I'm guessing they were trying to emulate the effect of not being able to hear for a bit, but It's a awful fucking sound.
The ending part of the game ramps up the difficulty to an absurd degree, and loses every element that makes the game enjoyable? Yep, this definetly came from some of the minds that made "Stalker"...
Beat this game the other night. I didn't have as hard a time getting over the paywalls as you seemed to, but I also didn't try out as many different weapons and I just reloaded my save when I died (didn't even know there was a continue feature). I just wanted to point out I found it amusing that the plot basically boils down to a third world drug kingpin lying to Saul about kidnapping his daughter and, in spite of the fact that she was last seen with that guy, Saul just immediately believing him. The big shocking twist is that el chapo lied about being innocent
For anyone who wants to give the game a shot, you can actually go prone, it almost makes you invisible, it is PageDown by default (first press crouches, second goes prone)
Didn't the donuts heal a lot? I always used them as health source in my playthrough. Great review btw! Really really damn good! You've actually played through it all and explained it dead-on! Great job on the humor too! The boat and the sleeping in corner xD
I love how this game is as bugged as an ant hill but also has all these complex mechanics to make you think about things. Also that ex-wife has no room to talk when Saul is out there gunning people down.
this protagonist dude looks like a cross between Karl Pilkington and Bruce Willis lol. Its like he has the action movie skills of Bruce but the logic and social skills of Karl....
The man on the bridge thing, reminded me of the guy in the first area you get to explore outside Candlekeep in Baldur's Gate 1. The only way to convince him to not do it, is to tell him to do it. I've not played BG1 in years, but for some reason I remember THAT.
i was so impressed with this buggy mess when it came out... I remember wandering through the forests and dying from a snake bite. It was unique at the time... so I played it for days - good times.
I had no idea until I read in a comment on the Xenus 2 video that Saul Meyers's likeness was based off of Arnold Vosloo, who played Imhotep in The Mummy (the good one). -He did Saul's voiceover too,- (actually he didn't, just his likeness, so all the more of a wtf) But hence why he looks so different in White Gold. That Atari money ran out. Still, I don't even see it in the game or the cutscenes. Though I sorta do in the main menu background. On a side note... I always thought Arnold Vosloo and Billy Zane were the same person. >__>
I remembered being fascinated by this game when I played it back in 2005. I never beat it, or got very far really. It simply crashed too much. But it was cheap and I'm a sucker for eurojank/slavclunk, so I didn't feel ripped off at all
11:40 "Good shot, too-- got him right between the eyes." Except no, Saul that's absolutely not where he got shot. In the cutscene you can clearly tell it was the side of his head through the temple, not between the eyes. I know this is a 4 year old video but I do keep coming back and rewatching it and honestly that line always gets me.
I'm glad someone's done a proper video on this game. It's so obscure there's not a lot of information on it. I actually pirated it at release and the whole thing felt like a fever dream and noone knew about this game so I lived my life in solace, a prisoner in my mind, completely alone with my knowledge of a game noone else played.
This video is wonderful. An ACTUAL 1 HOUR LONG REVIEW. Holy hell, and the humor is great as well. I mildly recall playing this game, well I remember abandoning it when I was in a helicopter and I realized I don't remember what I was doing, how I got there, who my friends and enemies are and what my character's motivations are either, and figured that was a good enough time to stop as any. But hey shooting a bullet in the air and watching all the civilians run with the same looping "Raaah" was a bizzare joy. Also I have to find the music from the intro cinematic, it's awesome. Wait, that voice.... Saul is voiced by the guy who did Kyle from Jedi knight 2.. Oh god, I don't believe it. Anyway, I'm subscribing because if this is any indication how this channel works I'll be here for many years.
Oh wow I remember playing this game, and having a weird love hate relationship with it. That click sound at the beginning of a track and the generally low quality sound and terribly mixing made me ask my dad to buy me a soundcard. Pretty stupid I know, but back then I had only played reasonably polished games before and it just seemed surreal to me that something so obvious would be the game's fault. ^^ Anyway cool review! Definitely livened up my nightshift. Also: 14:13 Man, that is one big laptop! Probably Alienware
If someone somewhere is struggling with the final arena in the game, I recommend getting prone and shooting the guys as they pop up. If you kill them in rapid succession you can sprint to the nearest room, you dont even have to destroy all generators, 4 or 6 should do. Bringing doughnuts, a fully upgraded AK-47 and a heavy kevlar vest is essential for this to work. You'll die really often so saving in the lobby that connects you to the arena will make you life easier, makes separate saves for each generator room you clear and in no time you'll beat the game. Haven tried it hard difficulty.
Thank god I saw this in my recommendations. A great look at one of my favourite goodbad games from my teenage years. Absolutely loved the systems and the weird feeling of depth and the need to actually explore and talk to people. Clunky, buggy even after the patch, but a damn good time when it came out.
I remember when playing this long ago that if you worked for the CIA you could ask them for a passport that you could give to Miguel. It was interesting at times how this game would give you a variety of options on how to go about doing things. I really wish this game would get remade like in Unity or something since I think if it was more stable and polished it'd be a pretty good gem of a game.
I watched this episode again today for old time's sake and I *just* discovered that Boiling Point is actually getting a release on Steam in two weeks. Not sure if it'll be another one of those bootleg copies like Xenus II was. It's being published by Ziggurat (who published a bunch of old games on Steam, both shit and decent ones) instead of the one that published Xenus 2 and The Precursors, so maybe it'll be a decent build, who knows?
MICROSOFT want to block all counterfit copys of games, puttin on steam makes u give real serial key and not clone keys so illegal downloading of games will become a thing of the past because u are no longer allowed to just play some games on pc unless you have a steam account, i had assetto corsa/tt isle of man all playable on my pc but copys lol , but stopped working and said required steam to play, when i installed steam and tried to upload the games to steam they banned me for trying to put illegal copy onto my steam account plus its also a money making thing by then selling you the game , its all about da MONEY lol
RUclips is scary. Played this game all those years ago when it just came out. Forgot it's name. Remembered the game some months ago, but didn't even know how to look for it. Today, out of nowhere, youtube recommends me this vid.
Considering the circumstances surrounding the health system, I don't think it's Saul becoming immune to the drugs so much as it is the fact that painkillers can only do so much when you've had nearly half your body shot off.
I went through hell trying to find a version of this game that didn't have malware, my first playthrough ended about 24 hours in when the malware ruined windows and I had to wipe my hard drive (do not get this game off pirate bay, I've gotten about 10-15 games from there and this is the only one that has ever had malware). myabandonware has 2 versions, one is a repack of the base game, the other is the EU version which comes with 2 Patches. You have to get Daemon tools to mount the MDX file and then the no-cd patch from scrolls-patches to run it(the EU version). I've went through a lot more money in about 45 hours then you did the entire game probably, but most of my expenses have been paying people off at the bar to boost faction relations.... I've went through about 100k pesos so far and I'm about 3/4 through the main story and only the Bandits are hostile with me. I bought a sports car for 16k, and as soon as some quest bloke gave me a fully loaded assault chopper for a quest, I've used it as my main vehicle and just save scummed if its gets damaged too much, and bought gas cans from the gas station because they won't refuel the chopper at the pump. Those lights on the endgame island actually do something, I spent like 2 hours last night trying to find it and when those lights hit you they make your aircraft crash. Also probably due to oversight or lack of, there are micro managements you can use to profit, you can open your inventory and quickslot every weapon you loot then hit V to swap ammo type on a weapon(keep 1 ap,sp or dum-dum ammo for each ammo type in your inventory), quickly swap to another weapon, and then the weapon will be unloaded and you get all the ammo, it doubles the profit for every weapon, and is extremely tedious. Also you can take certain Attack Jeeps (green jeep with the gun) at faction bases (Guerillas and Mafia only) and then just drive them to a car salesman and he considers it a legit vehicle and pays 1,500 pesos each time, the vehicles respawn so you can just do this ad-infinitum. The most frustrating thing about this game is fucking Don Esteban, he says if you do 3 quest's he will hook you up with Don Pedro, _but_ 8-10 quests later he still wants the same 4k pesos to get you the meeting that he did after 3.
@@pkemr4 nope, the MDX has some kind of disc verification which you can patch with no-cd, the version I got off pirate bay (that fucked up my pc) was a repack and didn't have drm, it had trojans instead lol. The repack from myabandonware has no DRM.
@@pkemr4 You can...the MDX version has more available updates as you can install the 2 included DLC, I've used both and they work, the repack is definitely easier to use, I just use the MDX because it allows you to install the DLC.
I feel like this game is one mod fix away from being pretty good. Just fix the audio and maybe make the menus work more consistantly and it would be pretty fun all around.
Dont stop making videos like these anytime soon this is really good content. Also everytime I try and play this game I get a couple hours in I usually uninstall it cuz its so goddamn tedious in areas. But each time I get a little better and I always learn something new about it.
Man I seriously hate that the games industry has for the most part thrown ambition out the window for safe proven ideas. I mean just look at PUBG/Battle Royal game modes. They started out a mod, and then had to start a game company to totally realize it. The second AAA devs see it makes money they start copying it with more money and man power. Another example of Indie devs/community taking game development into their own hands would be Squad and Post Scriptum. They are spiritual successors to the Battlefield 2 mod Project reality that made the combat more grounded and realistic and made game rules the encourage teamplay at every turn as we'd seen the opposite happen with the Battlefield series. It's like EA/Dice saw that most players couldn't handle complex teamwork and slowly dumb'd down thier games release after release. So while getting tired of playing PR with it's extremely old engine they decided to start a game company, and many of the Mods devs moved on to work with the new engine. While some things in PR were kind of Jank it's easily the most fun I've ever had in a multiplayer game.
Yeah I still to this day find battlefield 2 the best battlefield with its commander mode being squads and requesting UAV artillery etc. Also being able to C4 artillery repair etc.
I wound up here cause civvie reviewed neuro and i ended up watching nearly all of your backlog. I can say ive enjoyed nearly all of it and this is one of the best videos because shortly after seeing this i bought and played it. Keep making videos because you are really quite skilled at it, especially in the yakuza videos. Those are especially good. Cheers, Tehsnakerer!
In all seriousness, that opening cutscene is sort of brilliant in its blunt simplicity. Daughter? Gone. Guy? Mad.
Hotel? Trivago
You have to give credit, the animation and lip syncing of the daughter character is impressive. That is not an easy thing to do.
Hair? Balding
Point? Boiling.
Knees? Weak.
Arms? Spaghetti.
I love the hesitation in Saul voice when he affirm "it's their choice, they could have gone to college" like he definitely know it's a stupid answer
The sad thing is, there are people who say things like that. Not so much about warzones as poverty, but "Just get a degree" is a surprisingly common response to any statement made about how shitty things are for poor people.
You know what Saul's right! Now which type of pineapple do they charge for college tuition?
I spent four years getting two degrees and now I clean a school.

My favorite part about the opening for this game is that Saul's daughter doesn't even sound scared or worried about her safety, she just sounds like she's having a moderately unpleasant time in Realia.
This is Tuesday for the Meyers family, I'm sure
I love how multiple items disappearing out of your inventory and the police station being destroyed by a crossbow are both *minor* things.
Unfortunately items still despawn. Hell, a whole fucking hammer full of items just went underground for me (it was not destroyed since the map clearly showed it being there). Incredibly frustrating expirience
@@kanabis134oh you mean *hummer*
Back here again now that the game's on Steam. I'd like to think this video is part of why they rereleased it.
Imagine if Saul Myers was a beer bellied couch potato instead of the hardened ex-legionnaire that he is.
Isn't it more appropiate ?
In game, he has 0 starting experience with every weapon and he can't run for 100 meters without wanting to sleep for the next four hours
In my opinion he could have been portrayed as an unprepared yet incredibly brave man going on a trip to save his daughter.
Because that's how most of the game feels and looks like.
Honestly, you could just assume that Saul is a bit of couch potato ever since he left the military.
This doesn't sound like a very bad idea for a video game.
I guess race-bending is a side effect of the mind control device.
I mean Saul is in the foreign legion which mostly employs foreigners, so it would make sense for him to not have an accent

And also I am pretty sure that SynthAdren was originally cocaine in the game, but they changed that too.
Did they already come out now that yo comment is 9 month old?
And what about mod support? This game NEEDS mod support, maybe we can mod it to be sorted of spiritual successor to Far Cry 2 and FNV, sort of weird offspring 😅

Boiling Point: Road To Hell: Retribution
No.... don’t.... please....
Ride to hell is god awful this game is actually quite fun I recommend you play it
That intro is unironically brilliant. It feels more like a prolonged trailer and I wish more games would be this campy.
"dad, is that you? I cant hear you because of this rock music"
I've played this underrated game myself and noticed there are a few things you either didn't get exactly right with this review or I'd like to offer feedback on:
13:22 - There is one way you can make some decent money with hunting and fishing, but it's a bit out-of-the-way and not well-advertised within the game.

Well, it's Ukrainian, like Stalker :P
I think Far cry 2 captures the feeling of being in a very hostile land as well. With a simple realistic damage tweak, the game becomes truly immersive.
Yeah, Far Cry 2 is pretty much the best Far Cry game. You can get sucked into it really easy, it feels like a central African war-torn hellhole.
Bonus points for the Far Cry tier+ difficulty spike at the end.

Anyway, good take on what I consider a "hidden" classic - a janky-as-hell but very interesting game that gets level design right such that the areas look like they make
sense.
Newsflash: This is up on GOG.
Soon, I will enjoy the full Saul. BWAHAHAHAHAAAA!!! *Gets Doughnut stuffed in his mouth, enjoys snack*
he hit boiling point when someone _called his damn phone,_ and he stayed there the entire game, he just wanted to tell his daughter to NEVER call him while he was playing DRIVER 3. He's the epitome of "gamers rise up".

"Getting shot is bloody expensive"
Every American ever
No thats the one injury thats cheap to fix here. I mean we by nature are really good at dodging bullets, but hey; everyone gets caught of guard sometimes.
For some reason, this is the only game in history to reference Driver 3 in a good light.
That reason being Atari
So basically it's the grandfather of Just Cause but with more immersion.
It's technically the forerunner of Far Cry 2, and is actually more feature-rich in some ways when fully-patched.
Dp you know if there exists an unofficial patch?
24:49 No matter how many time I rewatch this, I can't get enough of MandaloreGaming randomly popping up to voice a single sentence and leaving.
???
I swear to god if Myers managed to get Calita in Driver 3, then he will be MY all time favorite main character of all time. Fuck that goddamn mission.
I mean, you can always also get it from myabandonware as well.
@@Tehsnakerer revisit-when? 🤔
I can see where the mistake on the guns could come from - who would think a FAMAS would be a better gun than the Steyr AUG?
Just started my playthrough but it also seems like you can avoid decreasing your faction reputation if you manage to clear out locations solely through silent headshots; something made easy with the SP ammo. So you can potentially clear missions and gain faction rep with opposing factions

WOW ITS LIKE DEUS EX AND TAKEN HAD A BABY!

It wasn't just dropped on its head it was dropped down a bleedin staircase

+David Santiago While I wasn't too happy by the end, it is definitely impressive for its time, and bugs ain't always bad, they can be funny.

Glad you enjoyed it
DEUS EX: TAKEN
Aww yis, Mistah Jay Cee Dentan
in da fresh
I love this game! The best thing is the combat music hahah Always the same and epic!
This video is such an oddly perfect thing. It feels like I can return to a million times and appreciate it just as much as the first time I saw it.
New version has just come out!
Fun fact: the voice actor and face model for Saul Myers is Arnold Vosloo, aka the same dude who played the eponymous mummy in the film The Mummy
RUclips is scary. Played this game all those years ago when it just came out. Forgot it's name. Remembered the game some months ago, but didn't even know how to look for it. Today, out of nowhere, youtube recommends me this vid.
Some games were truly meant to be best at becoming a long, humorous YT video
This was the first Tehsnakerer video I watched that made my sub to him! So thanks man!
Saul Meyers is a master at Driv3r? Now I totally fuckin respect him. (o_o )
The mayor is so scared of what could happen if he helps Saul that he needs an overwhelming bribe of 100 bucks to spill the beans.
As I played it i always broke out in tears laughing as the grandma threw a grenade before my feet.
The greatest videogame analysis of all time (has helped with my insomnia numerous times and gotten me through one break-up and a half/10)
Did the version you get have use starforce or securom drm? Both of those can fuck your pc up
@@pkemr4 nope, the MDX has some kind of disc verification which you can patch with no-cd, the version I got off pirate bay (that fucked up my pc) was a repack and didn't have drm, it had trojans instead lol. The repack from myabandonware has no DRM.
@@smokingone should I get the repack version?
@@pkemr4 You can...the MDX version has more available updates as you can install the 2 included DLC, I've used both and they work, the repack is definitely easier to use, I just use the MDX because it allows you to install the DLC.
@@smokingone i tried the 2.7gb one and the no-cd from the website, the game wouldn't start. Is there something I'm missing?
I remember it was advertised as an amazing game with no loading screens
I feel like this game is one mod fix away from being pretty good. Just fix the audio and maybe make the menus work more consistantly and it would be pretty fun all around.
There is Xenus Gold, Russian version with official mods and patches, so much better than the original
@@emulation2369 can we patch that to be english again?
Dont stop making videos like these anytime soon this is really good content. Also everytime I try and play this game I get a couple hours in I usually uninstall it cuz its so goddamn tedious in areas. But each time I get a little better and I always learn something new about it.
27:55 - Really impressive ambushing
30:29 I'm pretty sure I know the exact mission you're talking about and it gave me immediate PTSD flashbacks to 2006.
#LosTomatos
They are good at Spanish as the person that filmed Manos: Hands of Fate.
It’s quite funny that I remember absolutely nothing from this game, but I still know the song by heart ...
very nice Review buddy. I really enjoyed that!
The original Russian dub for this one is so comical.
me: oh man that looks like the game with arnold vosloo you once played. *looking it up* HOLY SHIT ITS IT!
YES A NEW REVIEW!
The AUG's sounds seem a lot like Counterstrike Source's M4
YO THE GAME'S ON STEAM NOW, LET'S GO!
