I met Nanci one night in a bar somewhere. We sat at a small bar table for well over an hour and talked. Nanci was quiet and reserved and just listened. There was never a hint as to her fame. I asked her if she had ever stayed at the Grande Hotel in Point Clear, AL. When she responded "no", I proceeded to describe it to her. My description was rather lengthy covering the venue on beautiful Mobile Bay, the oaks with Spanish moss, etc. It was getting late and Nanci finally graciously excused herself saying she had an early flight the next morning. Several years later, I was watching ACL and I recognized her. She sang Late Night Grande Hotel and on the intro she dedicated it to me and credited me with giving her the title. The video is available, Season 17, Episode 1 Songwriters Special and her intro is at 20.07. Ironically, the first line of the lyrics speaks of working on an early flight to anywhere but here. RIP dear, sweet Nanci. I'll never forget that night.

very saddened to hear of her death , this song always had a personal meaning for me for years , I hope she passed in peace ..from where she was always welcomed and visited regularly ,Ireland
The time and place I was when I first listened to this song is always evoked every time I hear it. This song is reminiscent of it in a way that all of her songs are. It's like she was watching my life, telling my stories in her songs. No one else will ever be able to do that like Nanci did.
I began my love affair with your music when I first heard you play “Listen to the Radio” on the Today Show in the late 90’s. Storms was my first of your many recordings. Nanci, you will be forever missed. 😢❤️
Many years ago, they played this song on late night radio. I asked for the album for my Xmas. Ended up buying her whole back catalogue. Seen her live twice in Glasgow and at Edinburgh Castle. Love her. This song and "Southbound Train" 2 of my favourite all time songs.
“No one ever knows the heart of anyone else.” The truth of that lyric has stuck with me all these years. Rest In Peace, Nanci. Thanks for sharing your angelic gift with us.

Love love love this song....and this beautiful singer. Sad doesn't begin to describe how I feel on hearing of her passing. Heartbroken at the end of yet another musical era. Condolences to her family and friends. What a fantastic musician Heaven has just won. There will be some 'Welcome home' party in her honour with John Prine leading it. Nanci will live on through her lovely songs and playing. Fly high lovely lady.x
Such a sad day to hear of Nanci's passing. I was introduced to her music over 30 years ago and was lucky enough to see her at the Birmingham Town Hall..............I will spend today listening to her music. We have lost an unbelievable talent. RIP Nanci
What a lovely voice from a beautiful lady. I played this song over and over again the day my dear dad passed away in 1992 he was only 52 years old. Thank you Nancy this your song helped me through my heartbreak days back then. ❤️🙏🌹💐❤️

Many years ago a coworker asked about my fav music. I said I love all genres but my very favorite is Nanci Griffith. She said “you can’t know Nanci…. She’s MY favorite😀
R.I.P. Nanci. Introduced to you by my good friend, Andrew in the late 1980s. Good, honest songwriting that will be enjoyed by as many generations in the future that enjoyed it since the 1970s.
i've loved her since this album..the intimate parts of the video crush my heart to this day.....i miss her....the world is a lesser place without her soul......Prine is gone....Cohen so any others
I've heard her name for many years but had never actually heard her music. I heard her music for the first time on 2-4-18 in an Albuquerque record store. Ordered my first Nanci Griffith album today. The first of many more to come. I'm hooked!
I first heard this song on a cassette player when I was about nine, and I loved it... now I'm twenty-six and I've just seen this video for the first time, and I still love it. Makes me want to cry.
Thank You for posting this gem.....Nanci Griffith is a truly wonderful artist, love her and LOVE her music......she is wonderful and beautiful....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so very sorry to say, I have never heard this beautiful, gifted, lady sing before. I can't imagine how I missed her. Tonight I was flipping channels and stopped at pbs long enough to hear one of the most beautiful voices ever. I actually knew almost everyone on stage with her, either back up singers or musicians. I was so sad to find out she's left us. How sad I missed her. I would have loved to see her in person. But she's got it made now, one day I'll get to see her in living color, and that's still pretty awesome. I love your music princess, RIP, when we get there with you, we'll pull out all the instruments and sing for a thousand years.
In true "may you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead" fashion, Nanci sneaked out while the world was busy with hurricanes, floods, pandemic and wildfires. I hope to go out with as much grace as she has. A vastly accomplished singer/guitarist/wordsmith that the world will not be able to replace... Now appearing nightly with John Prine and others who have gone before her. We've lost some real giants in the past couple of years, but Nanci's death is especially poignant. She's the only one who would be able to describe it aptly in a song.
Here’s to all of us homesick for a place that no longer exists.
Just heard the news that this beautiful songbird has left this world. I am very sad. Fly high, sweet Nanci.
