The words are ringing round my head tonight. Not for the first time. But I'm back here again. After years. Do we ever leave our troubles by any door? But we fight. We break those doors down. Thank you Nancy Griffith. You were and will always be someone who moved me to tears! ❤❤❤

This is the song where I discovered Nanci. I was listening to the radio late one night and they played this song. I thought it was so beautiful. I asked for the LP for my Xmas and loved it so much. I then started to work through her back catalogue and loved so many of her songs. Went to see her at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and also Edinburgh Castle. I would definitely call myself a true Nanci boy!!

You can hear and see and feel that this song, delivered so passionately and beautifully, is a window into her soul. An empty place she probably lived with all her life. I hope that place was filled at last. It opens me up to think of similar bittersweet moments and occasional poignant ache in my own life. I guess that's why we identify with great work like this. It often comes from the pain we encounter in life. On my third replay now. Appreciating true art and how it eases the bruises we all encounter in life. Thank you, Nanci. May your gifts be appreciated eternally. May you find peace in your eternal home.

Late Nite Grande Hotel was the first song that I heard of Nanci when it was on the old CMT channel. I was really taken by her voice and I had bought several of her CDs afterward and just enjoyed her sound so much whether at work or at home or in the car. RIP Nanci. God bless you.

God bless Nanci ..... I always come back to this song . Nanci's feel for the lyrics are so poignant through her own experience (though we can't know the heart of anyone else) or through her amazing empathy. I'm saddened that your likes won't be here again Nanci.

I saw her in London England in 1989 while serving in the US Air Force. Me being from Texas, I was hooked from then on. She took the time to take pictures with us after the show. She was so nice and personable. She had a big impact a home sick Texas boy of 19 years old.

0:20 Working on a morning flight to anywhere but here
I'm watching this evening fire burn away my tears
All my life I've left my troubles by the door
'Cos leaving is all I've ever done before
0:50 It's not the way you hold me when the sun goes down
It's not the way you call my name that left me stranded on the ground
It's not the way you'll say you'll hear my heart when the music ends
I am just learning how to fly away again
1:20 It's not the way you say you'll hear my heart when the music ends
I am just learning how to fly away again
1:39 And maybe you were thinking that you thought you knew me well
But no-one ever knows the heart of anyone else
I feel like Garbo in this Late Night Grande Hotel
'Cos living alone is all I've ever done well
2:10 It's not the way you hold me when the sun goes down no, no
It's not the way you call my name that left me stranded on the ground
It's not the way you'll say you'll hear my heart when the music ends
I am just learning how to fly away again
2:40 It's not the way you'll say you'll hear my heart when the music ends
I am just learning how to fly away again

The way Nanci always said "Thank You" with her Texas twang when she sang live was how I said "Thank You" forever after the first time I heard it. She not only affected my song-loving life, she affected my speech. I always wanted to see her live, but never had the opportunity. I knew a few years ago that she would probably never tour again -- or if she did, it would be in Ireland. May she rest in peace now, to tour spiritually with Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, and all the others she sang with or for before her own passing.

I know she didn’t write this song but she breathes it to life. “No one ever knows the heart of anyone else.” So poignantly sung and so spot on.

Observe this interpretation, and how Nanci shakes her head following the lyrics, for examples whenever she sings "It's not the way you..." It means that Nanci is right inside the song while he sings: she not only sings, but she interprets.
The song is a masterpiece. Great class and elegance with a disarming simplicity and purity.
I am in love with this song, from the first time I listened to it.
Nanci is cultured, refined and has an innate grace.
Thanks for existing, Nanci, I adore You.

There's an intense vulnerability to Nanci that makes her unique. You don't just listen to her sing, you fall in love with her.

    • @FrancoS59

Yes, what you wrote is right, and then there is more....and I say, if one has a little of heart, is it possible that one does not fall in love with a soul as kind and sensitive as Nanci is? No, impossible not to fall in love with her.
