I've always loved this song, from first hearing a couple of decades ago. I always sing along and hold that note on "gold" and "golden lights of America.' It's been three years now.

Loved this album since the 80s!
Can always use a cup of Joe
I only ever cried over the loss of two musicians: Jerry Garcia and Nanci Griffith.
Used to go See n Hear Her Alll the time at Anderson Fair back in Houston…Incredibly Soothing and Inspiring and of course We Allll Loved Her.
one of my all-time favorites by one of my all-time favorites 💖 thank you so much
Love is true ..I'll hold you Forever
is it wrong to say she was the female version of John Denver.... disarmingly wholesome...
What a song. What a singer. I hadn't realized she had passed.😔😔😔😢
This is a wonderful song! I have the original album. Just curious, are there any other bonus tracks besides this one song?
Nanci Griffith only more beautiful than her guitar playing is her angelic voice and the incredible depth of her heart and her musical genius. I hope she is looking down with a warm smile that people still find incredible comfort in the lyrics she left behind……this painted an amazing picture of the Woolworth’s store near my home I frequented as a child. Amazing how this artist’s voice paints vivid pictures. RIP Ms. Griffith; I hope you are dancing a little closer somewhere right now.
Oh, the night was clear And the stars were shinin' And the moon came up so quiet in the sky All the people gathered 'round And the band was a-tunin' I could hear them now Playin' "Comin' Through The Rye" You were dressed in blue And you looked so lovely Just a gentle flower Of a small-town girl You took my hand And we stepped to the music With a single smile She became His world And we danced all night To the fiddle and the banjo Their drifting tunes seemed to fill the air So long ago, but I still remember When we fell in love at the Roseville Fair Now we courted well And we courted dearly we'd rock for hours In the front porch chair Then a year went by From the time that I met her And they made her his At the Roseville Fair And we danced all night To the fiddle and the banjo Their drifting tunes seemed to fill the air So long ago, I can still remember When we fell in love at the Roseville Fair And here's a song for all of the lovers And here's a tune that they can share May they dance all night To the fiddle and the banjo The way they did at the Roseville Fair May they dance all night To the fiddle and the banjo The way we did at the Roseville Fair Songwriters: Bill Staines
*Why is it some profess their admiration for Nanci, but can't spell her name properly, with an "i" at the end instead of an incorrect "y"!*
Down at the station the tracks are cold The wheels of thunder, they roll no more And the heart of America cries for the souls Who won't be rollin' home The dragon weeps with empty eyes, The whistle sighs no more in the night ... It rests in the lines, like a ghost in the music, The soul of America's pride Toil of our fathers with foreign hands, They laid the tracks and they opened the plains They fought the mountains and they merged our seas They set America free Tell me, ...Where is the blaze of the hobo's caldron? The refuge for these poor and these fallen? It rests in the lines, like a ghost in the music, The soul of America's pride Foreign father ...American son, father see what your son has done He's torn up the mountains And reshaped the plains The dreams he dreams aren't the same To the fallen ones who may still be askin, "Who'd take time to stir these ashes, Who'll hear the lines of a ghost in the music And kindle America's pride?" Tell me, ... Where is the blaze of the hobo's caldron? The refuge for these poor and these fallen? It rests in the lines, like a ghost in the music, The soul of America's pride.
*Why is it some praise Nanci, but can't spell her name properly with an "I" in lieu of a "Y"?*
[Lyrics] Well, it's harvest time out on this Amarillo highway Daydreamin' the South of France I could whistle you out waltzin' there Would you still say you can't? Heart of a miner here takin' her last chance Heart of a miner, kept her feelings buried deep Heart of a miner, could there be something she needs? Just a treasure that could hold her That's not fool's gold What could the miner do when her heart was made of crystal? She used to keep it on the shelf Now she dreams of you high up in your mountains It was that treasure that you held Look at this lonely miner here who finally fell Heart of a miner, kept her feelings buried deep Heart of a miner, could there be something she needs? Just a treasure that could hold her That's not fool's gold Tell me he's not fool's gold It's still harvest time out on this Amarillo highway Just a lonely miner still a thousand miles from home
I'm a little bit younger than Nanci and remember the big Woolworth's being at the new mall by my home. It had that particular smell she described, the diner counter and stools and an elevator to the right of the counter. Though I was only around 10 y/o I remember vividly the feeling walking through the front entrance that this is a special place. She brought that memory back to life, I just wish I learned to appreciate this song before her passing.
Oh, I used to wish I was a hard line taker they'd say, "Six to one a half dozen'll break her", 'till I fell in love with a young man who sang the blues Oh, bless my daddy, he warned me well He'd whisper in my ear and say, "Now look out, gal, There's always a ne'er do well gonna call you the fool" He said, "you'll never learn to fish on a borrowed line You'll never learn to write if you're walkin' 'round cryin' And it's a pity that you're lover died young, but, You'll never get tired of livin' alone". So, now I dream of the lover that I don't know It's safer this way ''cause I don't have to go, oh, and he Won't come, so nobody goes away Sometimes I wish for the warmth of his hand Take a look in these eyes and understand I'm just a little too old to be a-learnin' the rules of the game He said, "you'll never learn to fish on a borrowed line You'll never learn to write if you're walkin' 'round cryin' And it's a pity that you're lover died young, but, You'll never get tired of livin' alone". Oh, maybe I could take him to Mexico We'd kick our heels in the warm cloudy gulf He'd sing a song about the weather in the Poconos; This lover that I don't know Then two hearts would pound 'stead of one in the night I'd learn to fish with my own line Catch my dream and hope that line would hold He said, "you'll never learn to fish on a borrowed line You'll never learn to write if you're walkin' 'round cryin' And it's a pity that you're lover died young, but, You'll never get tired of livin' alone". No, I never get tired of livin' alone Sometimes my feet get cold, when I'm livin' alone,
Gettin' into country, found Nanci, recently bought the album, slowly and surely becoming more and more and more of a fan..
Did Nanci travel the country in an Orange VW wagon ? Quite interested in the origins of this video.
There's A Light; Nanci Griffith!
We'll have memories for company long after the songs are gone.
So sweet!
This woman was superb. Everything, her original music, her choice of covers performed like this one (original by the late Richard Dobson), her voice -- phrasing, tonality, inflections, intonation & her entire personality -- like no other in folk country. RIP dear Nanci -- we'll continue to listen.
..earth angel..
I miss that flip of her hair and that little yip she occasionally sang. Truly Great American original artist.
*I first heard this beautiful song performed by Nanci in 1984, and it captivates my heart just as much now as it did then. Definitely an all time favorite from her amazing lifetime body of work, recordings and performances! We will meet again angel*
❤💔
I really love the songs of Nancy Griffith especially “From a distance”
Love this tune so much! As good as it gets.
I try to live in the songwriter space but the bar is set way to high for any of us here
Eric Taylor was Nanci's husband. Their marriage lasted six years (1976-1982), and together they never had children. Eric wrote this song and sings it on this track. Of the 9 songs on Nanci's first album, Nanci wrote 7 of them. Its rare to find as creative of an artist like Nanci was. *Proof Angels live upon our planet*
