God bless Nanci Griffith! RIP you will be missed. One of the purest voices in music! One of the best songwriters in country music! I’ve enjoyed listening to your music for so many years now!
Just read that Nanci Griffith has passed away at 68. I’ve never considered myself particularly fond of folk music, but in 1988 her song “I Knew Love” made me sit up and listen… and I’ve never forgotten it. Her voice made it so.
Echo what you ssaid John! Words cannot express how I feel about Nanci's passing! The best storyteller of them all topped off with that Aw shucks voice!
Just want to send a little love to Nanci Griffith whom I have loved for about 40 years...hard to believe...I remember saying about her once, and it bears repeating, "you can look at Nanci Griffith for one nanosecond and see a trillion years of goodness..." God Bless You today Nanci...you have moved my heart so many times!Peace to you! I hope that you have all the love in your life that you need...
Amen to that! Through CHRIST JESUS; who died to cleanse us from disobedience and restore us ( all who would call upon HIS NAME in that faith ) to a right standing so that we would know that HIS Love IS more than just a word!
Heard Nancy passed away today in NashV, bless her heart. This song is so beautiful, takes me right back to a time idk how I’d survive, heartbroken. I made it but I still carry that hurt in my heart, always will. 🌹
April 1988, driving round Leeds en route to see friends in Grassington, this came on the radio and I had to stop the car to listen. I had never heard Nanci Griffith before and it was a thunderbolt moment. In the late 80s and early 90s she was just fantastic.
Nanci always thought she was a plain Jane but they always say you never see yourself as others do! She is beautiful and my alltime favourite singer/songwriter!
Probably my favorite Nanci Griffith song, next to "Trouble In The Fields." The production on this record was so perfect, tender, intimate. And my God, what a video. Still love it all these years later. RIP Nanci.
“I knew love when it meant forever and when feelings shared didn’t always have to hurt.. and a promise that was made would go unbroken.. and if you cared you found a way to make things work.. I knew love when it was the greatest power in the world.. when it was all so easy.. “
The first time I heard Nanci Griffith she was singing this song. I've been hooked on her ever since. My heart is broke to hear of her passing. I was killed over John Prine and I am killed over Nanci Griffith. 2 great poets and storytellers of our time. Rest in peace Nanci Griffith. Your artistic expression impacted this world and will for all the years to come.
This is the video that began my lifelong fandom of her music, her voice and her lyrics. Thank you for all the heart, joy, love, pain, and sadness in all your songs. Those of us who loved you felt every beat of it. Thank you, Nanci.
How is it possible? How is it possible for an adult to look and sound like the innocence and true heart of a child? ◄ Matthew 18:3 ► And HE said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
I loved this song the first time I heard it. Learned to play it on my guitar by ear. This was in the late 80's. Yesterday, I got out the old guitar that I don't play on often. And I played it. Thank you Nancy Griffith.
Loved Nanci when I discovered her in the late eighties and bought the "Lone Star State of Mind" album. Had to have them all and saw her live in many places from huge venues to "The Mean Fidler" in Wilsden Junction, London. Always gave her heart and soul and I miss her everyday even though I never met her. Strange that no other artist ever had that effect on me.
I discovered Nanci kinda late in her career (1992) on Austin City Limits. I think her pre-Electra stuff was the best, although Other Voices and Flyer were good albums, too. Nanci led me to my eventual wife (Nancy with a y), through our mutual interest in her. I'll always love both Nancies.
Simply amazing. I am so grateful to have seen her at Stan Rogers Festival a couple of years ago. A beautiful woman, an outstanding song writer, very interpretive of cover tunes and a pure voice. What more can you ask for?
I have loved Nancy's music for so long. In my younger days...much younger days, I loved to sing with her and these round thing's called, Vinyl! Sorry, couldn't help myself! 😊 Best compliments I ever had was when people said, "You sound just like the record!" I'm sure I don't sound like her today! Lol. I Knew Love.. just the music makes memories pop up and maybe a few tears.
This is from the "Little Love Affairs" album. I bought this on vinyl soon after it came out. It cemented my love of Nanci Griffith. For me this is a "defining" album of Nanci's music. Nanci has left the building, but the music remains.
Let me be the first to comment. Too pretty for words....a man in my late 30's with tears in my eyes. What a talent...that voice...Americas finest...to the world.
I'm knowing loss right now. Thank you Nanci for your wonderful songs, your beautiful voice. And the hope of simple goodness. 😌 It's still exist. Just got to look a little harder these days to find it. Rest in Peace Sweet Angel. God's Speed. Not goodbye, just see you when we see you. 🥲
Words will never express the sadness in my heart and the hearts of millions who loved this princess of song now the pleasure is gods and the legacy isours
First saw Nanci in Austin around 1985 and have spent over 30 years giving her music to friends and being in love with that pretty face and beautiful smile.
The video has not aged well, but since I first heard this song around 88/89, it makes me cry every time i listen to it. Every time. Beautiful, simple melody, poignant lyrics and that pure, Southern voice of Nanci.
i HAVE BEEN A FAN AND FOLLOWER OF THIS WOMAN'S MUSIC SINCE THE LATE 70'S ,EARLY 80'S THE VERY FIRST TIME i SAW HER ON AUSTIN CITY LIMITS. EVEN GOT TO SPEND SOME TIME WITH HER IN KNOXVILLE,TENNESSEE. Nancy, You helped me through four years of being single.I was lucky enough to see you live with my new wife a few years later. Thank you for being such a special part of our lives.
I love Nancy since the eighties her songwriting and the words the lyrics are so expressive and so much like Nancy we love you and keep on singing thank you
One of my favourite songs of all time. Her best song that she didn’t write, and Nanci’s description of the songwriter in her live show was so warm and beautiful.
What a beautiful song and so true We need that emotion and meaning back in the world today Not religious at all but this has a spiritual feeling beyond words And her voice is crystal. A talent that will be missed
Hearing this again has stopped me in my tracks today.. Such a hard time when this was released, didn’t think I could survive alone, but I did.. Knew then I’d love him forever and I still do though I’ve never seen him since 🌹🌹🌹

I have loved this woman for many years. She has no idea who I am. I guess she never will. I've seen her in-person - just after the the release of Vietnam LP in a small S. FL venue.. Love, kisses and admiration, Mary Jane; d
In one of her songs relating to her mum, Nancy states she is plain, but to me along with my wife Eileen and Olivia-Newton-John she is the most beautiful woman who ever lived. Her music is awesome.
When I FINALLY got to see her at The Outpost In The Burbs (Montclair, N.J.) in 2004 (I had tickets to see her in the mid 90s at The State Theater, but she got sick, and had to cancel :( ), she proved that she had truly scathing wit, to go along with her inner and outer beauty and compassion, along with immeasurable talent. :)
God bless Nanci Griffith! RIP you will be missed. One of the purest voices in music! One of the best songwriters in country music! I’ve enjoyed listening to your music for so many years now!
Amen.
A huge loss
Heartbroken 😪 a perfect singer songwriter and will be sorely missed
RIP my sweet talented friend. I spent hundreds of hours with her music as I drove so many miles. YOU made the trips so much easier. thank you.
I miss Nanci already… shucks.
She and her young friend, John, are together?
Just maybe it all works out ‘swell’. I still love you, Nanci.
Just read that Nanci Griffith has passed away at 68. I’ve never considered myself particularly fond of folk music, but in 1988 her song “I Knew Love” made me sit up and listen… and I’ve never forgotten it. Her voice made it so.
Whatever I say won't be enough - I simply loved everything she did - Another Angel in Heaven just arrived
You brought tears to my eyes.
She was definitely an Earth angel. She went home.

I completely agree. Those are my two favorite songs of hers. What a talent!
💯
This is a nice recording. I generally prefer her live performances, but really like this studio cut. RIP Nanci Griffith.
I agree with so many of the comments. Nanci is just beautiful, and her songs make me want to cry they're so heartfelt.
Her voice first makes me cry because love is still the finest power in the world or at.lest in my world. 👌
RIP I am so sad, I cannot believe Nanci has passed.

When a feeling shared didn't always have to hurt
And a promise that was made would go unbroken
I knew love

And if you cared you found a way to make things work
When life was what two people shared together

When I could still believe
It was the greatest power in the world
I knew love
When it was more than just a word

When they made it all so easy
And sad goodbyes were seldom ever heard
When I wouldn't have to read this note that says you're leaving
I knew love
