As a non-piano-player it is hard to comprehend how a human being can deliver this demanding concerto at such astonishing tempo with seemingly perfect accuracy, sometimes playing two different sequences simultaneously. Moreover Khatia throws herself at the instrument with relish and enjoyment, interspersed with calm attention to conductor and orchestra. She brings alive a superb work of art into an audio-visual treasure.

@@sergio_damato It is unclear which question you ascribe to the intervention of God? How a human can perform so miraculously? It is indeed tempting to abandon understanding of how anyone can learn such creations and execute them with perfection and aplomb without Devine Inspiration. But in my respectful but agnostic opinion, Khatia has worked hard since she was 6 on this music, with genetic talent from her mother and a built-in devotion to the composers. It would be unfair, but admittedly plausible, that the Almighty has had a mysterious input.

You have hit on why this performance stands out above others. Generally I'm not a big Liszt listener, but this has changed that. I think she has decided she is Liszt for this performance @ 5:25, 16:20 look at her expressions which to me mean I've got this!! At 20:00 she is like a coiled spring waiting to explode. I think Andrey Boreyko should be given a mention here. The communication between him and the orchestra & Khatia is just great to watch. The whole way they all talk to each other visually, really makes this performance a real treat. The editing and camera work also captures the whole drama of the piece.

Angelic and Mephistophelian. She took me from the Gates of Heaven to the Depths of Hell - and what a trip it was. For me her emotional expressions are not for effect, they must come from her soul and she is not shy so she doesn't hide it from us. Personally I don't find that distracting...It's her gift to her audience. I understand and respect other people's opinions and tastes but for me this was phenomenal and I thank her.

Best performance of this Liszt tone poem (hiding as a piano concerto). Heard too many virtuosic, slam-bang performances of this orchestral masterpiece.
Khatia has the technical efficiency to address the melodic aspects of this concerto and not slam-bang her way to an ovation which most Liszt-players seem to do.
Yes, there are flashes of virtuosity, but the majority of this piano concerto is tone poem and the performer must never lose sight of the lyrical aspects of this beautiful tone poem for piano and orch.
I need to listen to the other performances by this beautiful, talented pianist for sure!!!!

I've listened to various performances of this for decades and it's one of my favorite concertos. I enjoyed this performance a lot and she does a terrific job, particularly with the triumphant moments of bravado and bravura. 15:50 for example. At the 17 minute mark she slows down the tempo admirably to milk the poetry in the passage--wonderful. I wish she had done the same at the 11:30 mark, but that's just me being too picky. There are other playful moments toward the end that she effortlessly captures. Charming!~ Also, it's better to just listen and not watch her too much because her great expressions are too distracting ;)

Soloist drowned out as usual by the overpowering dynamic of the orchestra. When will they ever learn, there are many many of them and one solo, delicate instrument played with subtlety and finesse. It’s seriously rare that an orchestra remains sensitive as a whole, enough to allow the soloist to project.
