Good test. I made a pot stand for the wick type canned heat you have in the background out of a similar Bumble Bee crab meat tin, using a similar hole pattern, and cutting a hole in the bottom to clear the wick holder. It nests perfectly on top of those cans, and I have them in the car emergency kits.
Hi Hiram. I have found that I had to reduce the number of holes in my fancy feest stove. Instead of two rows of 16, I have maybe two rows of 10. Otherwise the flames went beyond my pot too much. And my pot is a wide one! I live in the arizona desert, so maybe this is happening because of the dry air here. Keep up the good work. You're a legend.
The hotter the ambient air temperature, the more rapid the boil. I have used stoves with many holes for winter and fewer holes for summer to control the combustion of the alcohol somewhat. Placing a tin from a tealight candle inside of the stove allows a simmer, but, again, your simmer in hot weather will be higher than in cold weather, and, in extreme cold, I sometimes fail to keep the stove lit. Limiting the oxygen available to the fuel is the only way to control the temperature and fuel consumption of alcohol stoves. Alcohol, however, is a "clean" fuel in that it is made from rotting vegetation and distillation rather than being extracted from the earth by drilling. It also doesn't require a relatively heavy steel canister for transportation and use. I use repurposed plastic schnapps bottles. The shape is perfect for carrying in an inside pocket to keep it warm (and more efficient) in cold weather. Sleeping with preheated water in cold weather makes your breakfast water boil more quickly than starting with cold stream water, too.
I made a larger cat can stove with a water chestnut can for a pot stand /windscreen. It is way more stable and holds more alcohol and no waiting required. No holes required in the cat food can and can opener holes in the water chestnut can with the top and bottom removed. It is still light and nests inside a pot.
@hunt458 I too prime my stoves with a priming plate. The burning fuel warms the cold ot and prevents cold pot flame out. It also improves fuel economy because you to not have to let the stove burn for 20-90 seconds waiting for the stove to blossom.
@ColoradoCamper The carbon felt will turn the super cat into a blow torch. Check my video on my turbo stove. This is a micro Super Cat 2.1 inches in diameter with four pieces of carbon felt sticking out four of the jets. That stove without the CF took almost 9 minutes to boil with Heet. With the CF it boiled two cups in 5:37. Now my turbo actually has the CF sticking out the jets by 1/16 inch
hi there is no doubt about it the cat stoves are the best all round stoves when your in the field my version which i call the wild pacific stove boils 400 mls of tap water in times off 5" 10 SECS on average boils for 13" mins on 2 ounce of meths using ceramic paper for the wick the ceramic paper is on trial but its looking good after 10 burns there is no material loss or absorption loss my cans are smallest samom tin and a small condensed milk no cutting just need to drill pressure relief holes and away you go ps your vids helped me to decide which stove to use thanks
I'm really curious to see if the carbon felt helps with the pre-heat time. That's the only thing I don't like about the super cat, the long and finicky start up. The hybrid side burners build more pressure and don't have that problem. And Hiram, you can actually find dog food in those same cans (handy for us stovie folks with dogs instead of cats).
Pop can alcohol stoves burn LOT longer. The resealable [sm] paint can w/ lid w/ toilet paper as wick;; burn LOTTtts longer for stove & emergency & fantastic heat source. I even put in office for heat, w/ no fumes. Even had carbon alarm in room- no problems.
Keeping your fuel warm will make any alcohol stove bloom more quickly, as will keeping your water warm. Carry them in an inside pocket while walking and sleep with them. Preheating the water gives you a hot water bottle in your sleeping bag at night. Never waste a campfire. Warm or boil water in the evening for a quick boil in the morning over whatever stove you use. You can sleep with your canisters, too.
Just found this video... dod you do a test of the cat with the carbon felt? If so, please post. I’m interested to know about the performance differences. Thank you. 🌿
ive made one before, they are ok but a little to fragile for me to rely on out in the field. something to use around the house or pass out with instructions to friends when you have an extended power outage
Hiram: check out my Perfectef Super Cat stove, and Turbo stove. The Turbo is made like a 2.1 inch diameter Super Cat with four rhin strips carbon felt going through four of the jets. The Turbo throws a whale of a flame pattern
Franky Napkins burns dirty. Soot all over your gear. Unless you can find pure methanol, yellow HEET is available just about everywhere and burns clean.
Amount of fuel: 30 ml (1.01 fluid ounces) Time to boil : 5 minute(s) 57 second(s) (357 seconds) Time to run-out: 10 minute(s) 30 second(s) (630 seconds) -------------------------------------- Therefore, amount of alcohol used for boiling = time to boil / time to run-out. That is 357 seconds / 630 seconds. 357/630 = .57 x 30 = 17 ml. That's 3.5 teaspoons, or just over 1/2 fluid ounce. By weight, 13.9 grams, or just under 1/2 (0.49) ounce by weight. Bear in mind, these results are for perfect laboratory conditions, with no wind and low humidity. Out in the field, expect to use at least 20ml.
I'm watching this on 4/9/2022 just for old times sake. I sure miss your videos!

I made mine from a fancy feast cat food can and a paper hole puncher. Works great. Always enjoy your videos.
@jhippl I wrap my stove in a bandana and store in the pot. The pot protects the stove, and the bandana keeps the pack quiet.

But I want to see how it performs with the felt in... why'd you stop there?
😎 🔥. The best stoves review & analysis. 🔥

I would really like to have read your comment but the lack of punctuation made it too difficult.

I seen other videos where they use isoprophy alchohol as fuel for this catfood burner. I wonder if different fuels has different burning times.
Methanol exposure can be extremely dangerous, with significant morbidity and mortality if left untreated. But I love your videos.

something to use around the house or pass out with instructions to friends when you have an extended power outage
So the felt must of been a Bust?
Does changing the number of holes, rows, hole sizes have any positive impact on boil times?
Where do you get methanol?
Hiram: check out my Perfectef Super Cat stove, and Turbo stove. The Turbo is made like a 2.1 inch diameter Super Cat with four rhin strips carbon felt going through four of the jets. The Turbo throws a whale of a flame pattern
Wow! Everything is bigger in America. Here in Canada water boils at 100.
:-D Hahaha...Fahr away!
Muito bom Parabéns nota 1000
How many holes are in each row Hiram? Again, another to-the-point good video.
Doug Ramsey 17 holes
Where can I find a listing of theses camping site places that make these stoves? Thanks for the info.
Deborah Durham flat cat gear, rukus stoves, white box stoves
Deborah Durham
And... G o o g l e
Im impressed with your cat zen stove ..but...the dog wants his own stove. The doggy zen stove, he feels left out :(
For a rolling boil, that's 6 minutes, PLUS one minute of preheat, for a total of 7 min to boil.
slot antenna array?
Hiram I would like to know if Isopropyl alcohol can be used as a fuel source.
Franky Napkins burns dirty. Soot all over your gear. Unless you can find pure methanol, yellow HEET is available just about everywhere and burns clean.
What happened to the felt test?
Next video.
tysm for sharing
ciao scusa ma mi puoi dire come si chiama quella cosa nere che hai messo dentro la stoove?
Methyl alcohol (methanol)
Any alcohol >70% works
Higher % is better
This is very simple and easy one thanks for the breliant job
thanks
I am more interested in how much fuel it uses, rather than burn time.
Amount of fuel: 30 ml (1.01 fluid ounces)
Time to boil : 5 minute(s) 57 second(s) (357 seconds)
Time to run-out: 10 minute(s) 30 second(s) (630 seconds)
--------------------------------------
Therefore, amount of alcohol used for boiling = time to boil / time to run-out.
If you are catless use Spam or Armour potted meat can
Thanks for the video. I am seriously considering an alcohol stove
👍👍🇧🇷
Thank you
Muito bom o Fogareiro aí Parabéns 👍
Your buddy, Max
Do real food cook test hiram we all no water can b boiled
jonathan macias a cat stove is ONLY used to boil water, which you then add to dehydrated food.
^^^ that's all you would use this thing for. I made one and I use denatured alcohol... works like a charm
its 3 or 4 mins quicker than a regular bum stove, why get away from the rat run to be concerned over 3 minutes!, and the competition is FIERCE
Curious why you brought up the weather ? Your test was indoors so whats it matter the weather , sorry but useless information bothers me .........
Ñe
Who the hell sells methanol alcohol cheap Hirem??
