My wife and I watched Paul Nicholas in the London production at the Palace Theatre in December 1972 as our 3rd Wedding Anniversary treat. What a show and your man was superb.
@lomion79 He's giving it a bit of a middle eastern Hebrew dialect which is unique given that no one else had done it before. I've heard Paul NIcholas sing many a song here he's playing a character and it shows. Kudos to him though. As I said, I'm a Paul Nicholas fan.
That was lovely. Never heard Paul Nicholas singing before. Thanks for creating this. Tried to recognise all the pictures but only got Paul, Ted and Steve. Love to know who or what they were. Paul’s version is as good as any of them and better than many. Love it .
And to add, we went up to Palace theatre just after matinee as my father had to see a cast member, so taken in to the pub by back stage door -all supping drinks and bloke says to Derek James -castella ads if anyone can remember-and wife was Di Langton, and had played JC in the matinee…’Sorry mate , you’re Judas tonight. Cheers, saviour to c’&t in 5 hours. Was very privileged as Derek Griffiths was playing Simon -having played Judas matinee-and met him and all again backstage. He was an incredibly kind and gifted man. Had similar experiences with the original Evita, first recording and stage show. But JCS is always in my heart with the original casts.
Having read many comments here, and seen many JCS’ productions , I would say in my opinion this is probably the best. Ian Gillan-who I adore as an almighty voice from Deep Purple, Gillan and JCS was the amazing original in recording. Paul I saw 4 times at the Palace in 72 plus. Jesus, Judas, Simon and 2 of the council were my fathers clients and got to go back stage every time. Was totally star struck at tine. The v original recording with Gillan and Murray Head is the purest, but the first stage show with Paul and cast is outstanding. The ever increasing need to be ‘more gethsemane ‘ with tenors-Boe😡😡, is the same as Bring him home…Boe😡 Stop! The original is the best. I’ve also seen productions of JCS reinterpretations from amateur to professional companies in 6 towns UK, Ireland , NZ, Spain, Italy-walked out as JC is either a woman, Chinese , disabled , all three plus at one show wasn’t crucified but died of plastic poisoning.
i love paul, BIG fan,( tommy, sgt pepper) but when it comes to jcss no one has the gift like ted neeley. the same applies for carl anderson as judas. ( carl you are so missed) to see them together live - well it's like electricity.
PAUL BEAUSLINK DEAN NICHOLAS, came from a jewish background, his father Oscar was a manager for the stars of stage, musical, disc. I seem to remember Oscar his father trained as a solicitor. I knew Paul when he worked for David Screaming Lord Sutch. He started out as Paul Dean and the Dreamers a pop/rock group. He had a great friend in Ron Harwood, who wrote a big hit for Shaking Stevens. Ron was awarded an Ivor Novello award for You Drive Me Crazy no 2 in the hit list. colindaleradiosutch
@IAmLivinInThePast You're very lucky; I wasn't even in existence when it premiered. Jim Sharman's production, from what I've read, certainly was something special and I would love to have seen it. As it is I am grateful that the OLC album exists. And I agree that the productions since have generally been not as successful artistically.
There have been so many great versions of Gethsemane,, but this is the original and the best..All other singers look to Paul Nicholas how to sing this magnificent song..
@antthecabdriver Yes I have the full album which is, of course, a highlights album. No doubt I shall end up putting more tracks up once I have the time. 'I Don't Know How To Love Him' is already up. Thanks for enjoying.
Not as good as his reprisal of the role in 1992. Now, that 1992 cast with Paul as Jesus is my favorite version of the show. Has my favorite of every role. Not perfect, but by far my favorite.
@lomion79 Okay, I guess because it's been two months, I should have re-read ALL of our conversation. The only FULL album I have is 20th anniversary...sorry for the mix-up.
As abysmal as this and the rest of the London cast were, the London show was the most successful version of JCS ever produced. It ran for 8 years, whereas it never made it to 2 years on Broadway.
Big fan of Paul Nicholas and interesting to hear the accent he puts in to the part. However, Neeley, Balsamo, & I regret to say Nicholas, are nowhere near as good as Ian Gillan singing this song.
Um... This is actually the worst version of Gethsemane I've heard. Goat-like vibrato and singing a pretty iffy high C instead of screaming the G above high C like all others in the role. No passion or suffering which is what you expect Jesus to go through in this number. Top versions go to Steve Balsamo, Drew Sarich, John Farnham, Eric Kunze, and of course Ted Neeley and Ian Gillan. Even Jeff Fenholt in the OBC far surpasses this. If by "dignity" people mean bored... Yes he sounds bored that he's about to be tortured and crucified.
I agree, disappointed to hear this version.... I was able to see Ted Neely live in 2007 and in his advanced age hit ALL the notes....I love Paul's voice and showmanship tho.
My wife and I watched Paul Nicholas in the London production at the Palace Theatre in December 1972 as our 3rd Wedding Anniversary treat. What a show and your man was superb.
What a coincidence: I saw this at the Palace in 1972 or 1973. Wonderful show.
Love Paul Nicholas' voice in this
Yes, I can't believe how much he's aged though now! He's in Eastenders occasionally.
@@apmills3406It happens to us all, sadly.😢
I love Paul Nicholas voice
He has a beautiful voice.
One of the greatest songs ever written, with some of the greatest lyrics
Made me a believer

WOW! I saw this show in the early 70 with Paul Nicholas but I had forgotten how amazing he was.
YES!! YES!! YES!! Please put up the rest of the original London Cast album. It knocks spots of all the other recordings!!! xxx
I love this version, probably because my mum had the LP when I was growing up (now I do)
Best version I've heard. Lends great dignity to the roll which I don't hear from others.
That was lovely. Never heard Paul Nicholas singing before. Thanks for creating this. Tried to recognise all the pictures but only got Paul, Ted and Steve. Love to know who or what they were. Paul’s version is as good as any of them and better than many. Love it .
Best version, agree about the dignity which is soooo moving.
First time hearing Paul sing this, absolutely amazing.

I was lucky to see him live oh so long ago
His version makes me cry, it is so moving.
He is the best, sorry, really reaches, nice pace to it too, not too slow or fast
he was good at singing and funny in comedy

flindas ermm... no. This is not the original. The concept album and OBC came before this
Ian Gillan's is the original.

He is in east enders now playing a violent criminal 😃

Just wondering what makes this abysmal ?
Nice! Do you have all of the OLC? All I ever found was the 20th Anniversary of it. Thanks for posting!
@holydiver73 afraid i don't hear it myself. it just sounds like nicholas' singing to me. either way, i like it.
@holydiver73 accent?
I have only heard Michael Crawford' s version - it is far stronger and shows far more understanding of the lyrics.
Michael crawfod never sang this.
Paul sings it perfectly.
His diction.pitch is amazing.
Do your research friend. Crawford has recorded and sung this many times in concert. @@gwynpenny5730
do you have the rest of the songs?
Ian Gillan Best version
i thought jesus and judas were just good friends.

The Ted Neely performance is my favorite.

@@fitmommie22 just yesterday I found a video of Ted Neeley singing this live in 2021 and felt the same.
Neeley and Fenholt sing it better.
he sounds like the cowardly lion
