Corrections: It seems that VHS was forced to change their name due to them trying to trademark the term VHS. The Friday 13th lawsuit was even more complicated than what I said. The funny thing is dbd had moments where it almost died sometimes the balance or the updates where so bad that it went from 400000 players to 27000 wich is a mad drop now its fixed itself mostly (except the DDoS problem thats still a problem after 3 years somehow
@@WeirdWalrus-pk6wy It was likely less due to that and more due to the horror film anthology series VHS. Nobody is gonna get a video game and a totally unrelated company out of the country confused with regard to any trademarks. However, VHS, an older aesthetic horror film franchise and VHS, an older aesthetic horror game franchise is much more of a potential issue with the likelihood of consumer confusion.
I think the reason why they failed was because dead by daylight didn't revolve around one horror icon killer or other killers from one horror franchise and original license survivors from that franchise dbd gets original or licensed characters and different and unique in own way

I agree. Friday the 13th was doing pretty well up until that whole law suit that put everything on hold, by the time the lawsuit was over there would’ve been no point to push a update, half the player base left.
@@theweeb9101he playerbase left because after all the copyright bs happened they had to change the servers and getting into a match sometimes literally took an hour on console at least. What I enjoyed the most about F13 was how it never felt as sweaty as DbD. While you could always work together to escape from Jason, there was always that creeping reminder that there were only 4 seats in the car, and you knew 5 people were helping to repair it. It also made it more fun to play as Jason because you knew the moment you showed up, all chaos would break loose for the campers.
Oh, during the games peak (before the grab was changed) I was a god as Jason, literally untouchable. You try to stun me? I block the attack on contact so fast that the animation doesn’t even play, but they kinda needed superblocking, but I’m still decent as Jason now, but nowhere near and godtier when I was 12💀
Nah I feel like competition in the horror game space would just result in exclusive contracts and IP's being locked away; like how it is in the Streaming industry or gaming industry.
Everything about the Friday the 13th game makes me so sad because it was such a passionate team of developers that had a true love for Friday, and they got shut down by a situation completely out of their hands. I’m grateful I got to play in it’s hay day. So many awesome memories. hopefully someday they can make a sequel or some kind of follow up to this game, but I’m doubtful. RIP

DBD is literally the only game where I think a lot of the community doesn’t really want new content, but quality of life improvements and overall balancing updates
@@vin8754 yes, true. but i feel like fixing alot of the games problems (balancing, bots etc.) would be better for the games health and woulnt drive new players away.
@@vin8754 I'd come back to tf2 if they actually fixed the bot issue. I don't care about getting a Heavy Update, although it would be amazing if it happened, I just want it to be playable, man.
TF2 has been begging for anything worthwhile for literal years Warframe players fought with the old Creative Director for the game's entire lifespan for balance, fixes, QoL, you name it. Only changed recently when he moved to another project and they promoted the old Community Director to the role. (We went from someone we generally liked but disagreed with the player base on a fundamental level about much of the game, especially QoL, to probably the most beloved figure in the community who wanted a lot of the same things we did. It's been a really good ~2 years.) Total War: Warhammer 3 has needed a bugfix and balance sweep for it's entire 2 year lifespan. (game 3 is a merger of the entire trilogy, there are a lot of issues that arose from porting the older content) Stellaris had massive QoL and balance issues before they literally brought in a second devteam to focus entirely on maintaining older content. Those are just the ones I'm personally familiar with. Unfortunately this is a very common issue for games that have this kind of content/update structure.
F13 The Game is so tragic, it was an extremely popular game that was keeping up with DBD and was an amazing source of competition/friendly rivalry. They were able to do so well even when DBD was getting more licensed killers like Myers, Bubba, and Krueger, and they were able to fight them with the entirety of the Jason Voorhees IP. It's so sad how the lawsuit not only ruined any chance of the playerbase at that time to get Jason X or any new major updates, but it also killed any possibility of getting a new movie, which is so unfair as Chucky, Myers, Ghostface, and Bubba all got new installments, with the only two big guns being left out were Jason and Freddy. Not only was the movie IP essentially dead, they also killed off the game's community, and it's sad because I was actively in the F13 and DBD communities at the time, and just imagining the devs having to watch their game die is so sad and unfair, as it wasn't their fault that it died, but two men who couldn't agree on what was theirs or not.
It's so sad to see two big icons of the horror genre (Jason and Freddy) lose at this pop culture battle. Myers got two new hit movies, Ghostface got two new hit movies, Bubba is getting a super hyped game, Chucky has a stable tv show, and Jason is at least rumored to be getting a Camp Lake tv show, but where does that leaves Freddy? He was one of the big 3 back in the day with Myers and Jason, and now it's true to say he's the most left out in the teenagers demographic, who are the ones who are consuming this content more.
@@nana-cr1vc I 100% agree, while Jason is at least rumored to be getting a show (and he had a successful game), Freddy hasn't had shit since the reboot and, well, that was complete ass imo. I also just remembered that Bubba has had 5 movies since 2000, Candyman got a sequel, Pinhead got so many shitty sequels and then a decent reboot, so the only "Major" slasher icon that hasn't gotten a new movie/game is Freddy, which is incredibly unfair to Wes Craven, as the last movie that his character was in was so horrible and nothing like his original character.
I think one thing DBD had going for it that other games in its genre don't is simplicity. Almost all the other games in this genre have either multiple win conditions or one win condition that is far more complex than DBD's. Meanwhile, Anyone can hop into Dead By Daylight, pick one of the base Killers or Survivors and instantly have their goal AND power communicated to them naturally. It's part of what makes the licensed chapters work so well, that any fan of the license will be able to get a cursory handle on the game and play their license without an hour of tutorials.
Yep. It's the fact that the game is so simple to initially pick up. There's complexity layered on with each different killer having different powers, but the basic "do the gens, open the door" gameplay is something anyone can jump into. I watch the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre game and there's just so much to it. The gameplay itself seems overwhelming to pick up at first. If you don't have map knowledge you'd be utterly useless in that game. Even F13 as I recall had some weird mechanic where you had to either fix the phone box with a randomly hidden part, or you had to repair a car to drive away. It just ends up being excessive complexity. Where as most of DBD does all it can to show you what you should be doing. Gens make a lot of noise while being repaired drawing survivors and killers to them, hooked survivors show up on the survivor hud, so they know they can go help them. Killers always know where the gens are, etc. Even if it's your first time playing a map, you can pretty easily find something useful to do.
@@haiz768 "I love the lack of competition in this genre, it has totally made DBD a better game." Every time you comment its some stupid fucking shit like this.
Absolutely agree. Long time players of DBD often ask for different objectives than just gens, but that same simplicity is what makes the game work so well. Friday the 13th and Texas Chainsaw overload you with too many options to ever be truly mainstream.

It always confuses me when some hardcore DBD fans complain about the coming Texas chainsaw massacre game. "They are copying usss!" or "Hah! DBD will kill it in no time" etc. LIKE DUDE! The competition is GOOD for you. Makes both sides work better and hard to keep u. Like dont u know what 'monopoly' can do?
DBD didn't kill any of it's rivals. They self-destructed themselves. DBD will also die if it kills itself otherwise they will go on like csgo or warcraft. But I think the copying part you just said is made up.
Seeing VHS die in real time was surreal, it was the first time I ever experienced a games downfall firsthand. That said moving to DBD showed me that ASYM's seem to have a cruel trend. The devs are slow to react to player complaints and seem to have an inflated ego.
The problem is that player complaints for an asymmetric game are generally biased in some way, especially for DbD where at low skill levels one role thrives while at high levels the other does. People used to say old DH was balanced (“just wait it out”), or old pain res (every hook being gen regression was insane). They can really only listen to a couple people in the community or use their own data, which is also usually skewed.
@@peregrinus524pain res did not make every hook gen regression. The issue with pain res is actually an issue with the game itself. Map design. Maybe something more like "Campfire Tending" chapters. These chapters could deal mostly with balancing and cleaning/tightening up the shops and bloated item pools. This could also tie in with lore. The Entity as it is now seems much greater than it may have one point been. The Entity at it's core seems to be negative emotion, darkness, chaos incarnate. At some point, I'd wager The Entity gained the ability to feed on positive emotions such as hope from a being that it was once very similar to. This broken Anti-Entity (for lack of a better term) is likely stuck in service of The Entity because it can no longer feed on it's own and is probably responsible for bringing back those killed in the trials. The campfires literally the last physical manifestation of this broken, subdued Entity and is metaphorically fed by the survivors while literally being drip fed by The Entity. This could also explain the void, a once lush bright realm now left as hollow as it's one time warden. The Entity would have no use for it's upkeep but would find the devastated realm a nice dumping ground for it's used up playthings.
I'm so sad that evil dead the game didn't get very far. It released on my birthday, I'm a huge evil dead fan and I was so excited. Unfortunately, there were many bugs and balancing issues, along with long periods of time with no content. It literally took months to get 1 new character and outfits. Aside from it's issues, evil dead was a very fun game, working together for the objectives and looking out for teammates who got possessed. It's a shame to see evil dead die out so quickly, but I had fun whenever I did play the game.
One of the better things about it is Evil Dead, you actually HAVE to work as a team. You have little to no option. A lot of times in DBD you can get away with not.
They literally added new content every 3 months. Isn't that how dbd does it? Evil dead is only 14 months old and there have been 14 separate updates applied to it. Balance, bug fixes, and so on. Yeah it still has issue but so does every game like this and they always will. Dbd 7 years old and it's still has issues.
@@jonestownkoolaid371 yeah, that is true, mate. But the developers gradually gave up on the game, and some DLCs were very underwhelming. I heard that the original sabre developers who worked on the game were moved off and were taken over by sabre US I believe. To put it briefly, the game might not get supported anymore.
@@sagexalcen4708 I disagree, since a hatchet escape while carrying key is the only truly hasslefree option to get away without needing your team, otherwise good luck escaping without cooperating with the other survivors.
I feel like Ash vs Evil Dead and Friday the 13th were never going to take over. VHS had a chance because it wasn't a specific brand and they could add a ton of different characters, but those DDoS attacks pretty much secured their fate. I think the same goes for the new TCM game aswell.
F13 was the only one that stood a chance because it’s the only one that released early enough. From what I remember playing it years ago, it was a genuinely fun game with a lot of different objectives. VHS never stood a chance because it was too late to take any players away. There’s too many characters, cosmetics, people have already sunken thousands of hours into DBD, and just hyping a game up to be a “blank killer” just means that it’s going to fail immediately. Not to mention, the people who are interested in this type of game already play it. It’s the Smash Bros effect, essentially. If you make a game for a demographic that already plays something similar, they likely won’t switch over.
Bro f13 was the best competitor the game ever had. Dbd devs immediately started fixing things people were asking for, also they started giving some extra bloodpoints for login. After f13 died, dbd stopped doing those things for a long time… TCM looked awesome, and recently they showed the character progression. I really think it will be a hit

You forgot about Last Year: the nightmare ( the highschool themed like DBD game). i always wanted to play it but don't have pc. It looked fun as the map was big as the school, up and downstairs. The cool killer animations where they can hid in certain spots to instant down the survivors was a cool concept, it wasn't broken as survivors can just go open a certain closet to free their teammates (like in LD42). sad to see alot asymmetrical games go
It recently was rereleased and is pretty fun. There has not been a lot of updates recently as the devs are reworking all the maps gameplay and graphics wise. Free to play now as well.
DBD does a really decent job at improving the game during the mid chapter updates, so that it feels more balanced. Not everyone agrees with the changes but DBD always pays close attention to their community. Which makes it a better a game overall.
I do have to agree tbh. I think the Devs have been doing a pretty good job at listening to feedback and improving the game in recent times, which is great since without competition, the only thing that could really kill DBD was the devs themselves lol.
DBD only just got on my radar because of Naughty Bear getting in (as a skin for trapper, I know) but researching into it I saw so many characters I recognize and love so I got rather excited.
Evolve paved the way for DBD and deserves to be mentioned in conversation more, it was simply ahead of its time. Had Evolve been released at a lower price point, or gone with the current free-to-play model, I believe it would still be incredibly popular today.
HELL no. Evolve got WAY to repetitive way too fast and was extremely unbalanced. Every single game played out nearly identical to the last. Monster gets obliterated or hunters get obliterated. And idk if u can even count Evolve as an asymmetrical game, as hunters had weapons and several abilities to fight back with.
@@andmillions ... Asymmetrical means uneven teams/sides, not that one side can't fight back. So yeah, it counts. And i'm with x17, Evolve walked so Dbd could run.
@@unsuspiciousdweller8967 Still no. L4D walked so DBD could run. Nobody cared about Evolve after a month. Just because that game came out before DBD doesn't mean it had any impact or influence on asymmetrical games.
The death of VHS was really tragic for me. I've clocked over 3.7k hours in Dead by Daylight at this point; no other asymmetrical game pulled my interest away from DBD like VHS did. The fights were strategic and nuanced at the higher levels, and every action taken by both sides felt like it had a huge impact on the outcome of the game. Dollmaster was a truly unique monster, possibly one of the best designed monsters in any asym game to date. It truly is a shame that the game was doomed to fail, as gameplay wise, it really showed the most promise as the game to rival the king. It was just all of the logistical issues surrounding the game and creating content for the game that ultimately killed it. What pains me the most is that after the game gets shut down, it won't even be available for players to host their own games via peer to peer, so the game will truly never blossom into the experience I was hoping for it to be.
What killed VHS IMO is the lack of accepting feedback from monster players. We had dozens of monster players offer ideas to fix the games issue, like removing stun and slow mechanics on both sides, changing the end game [I Win] circle. And such. VHS is would have been much more fun for Monster players if they had completely removed stuns and slowdown from the game, while increasing the monster health but removing the monsters ability to regenerate from attacks. One Example is the Werewolf, it was fun and had a good chase mechanic, but it was too reliant on the unfun roar mechanic that removed the survivors abilities to fight, but you couldn't not use it because you would lose instantly if you didn't. The stun and slowdown mechanics were so bad on Monster and Survivor it became even more unfun depending on which perks and monster you chose, with the hand immediately on the survivors side. As a monster you could get slowed by a single sword swing, and they would have a dozen more to slow you down again, and they would slow you until your armor decayed in some cases, or slowed you so another person could finish you off. IMO the stuns and movement slowdown is what seriously killed off the game.
Doll Master suffered the same issue as well, as most of the match you would spend just hiding and playing getaway from the survivors instead of chasing and such. On the Doll Master side you would slowly lose tokens, removing your power. On the survivor side they would have to craft dozens of weapons just to destroy a doll or finally find the Doll Master and him instantly be on the other side of the map.
@@kanyonwilson3223 feel like for Doll Master it was fine, he was designed to hide away in the depths of the map and puppeteer. But for monsters like Werewolf, the core gameplay caused “aggressive” plays to be severely punished. I wish stigmas were a health bar and not an “all or nothing” mechanic. This would allow survivors to have more movement while using weapons, and make the monster not as scared from taking a bit of damage. This would make it so 1 teen with a weapon can do a bit of damage, but they are by no means a match for the monster on their own as the monster will just dodge and weave to have to tank as little damage as possible before getting the hit. And when the teens are fully stacked it wouldn’t create this boring stalemate, it would just mean the teens have more potential to deal more damage to the monster whenever he attacks, even across multiple stigmas depending on the weapons they are rocking. With this gameplay loop they could even give the monster an ability to heal a limited amount of stigma health per match, and maybe even a the ability to get a little bit of one lost stigma back. ( like the teens book of the dead mechanic ) I think they should just leaned into making it a faster paced deathmatch game. This gameplay loop could have also opened the door to new possible teen weapons, and killers being more unique by not being forever to each have abilities that do generally the same thing. (Movement/Attack/Locating) Sorry that this is pretty much me dumping my VHS redesign idea here, but I am very passionate for this game and honest to God, if the possibility arises one day where the rights to this game are available for purchase, I would definitely be interested in bringing this game back with a new coat of paint. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk
I love all the 3 mentioned assymetrical supposed DbD killers, but its true that there is a ton of trouble (Except with Friday the 13th the game, the devs didnt really mess up anything there, but unfortunately they ran into licensing issues) proven by the fact i didnt even know VHS is shutting down, and as a person that pre-ordered the Texas Chainsaw Massacre game, i hope it wont end as the other 3 mentioned ones
IMO the real issue is that in DBD the killers basically define the game and choosing a certain killer in and of itself completely changes how a game goes and a round progresses. In a game like VHS, the monsters had some variance but ultimately the different powers weren't different enough to really make it interesting. In making a layout with 3 powers that have to fall into specific categories, you loose so much space to work with. And the monsters didn't really feel as powerful as the killers in dbd do.
DBD killers being so defined and different from each other is amazing for gameplay though as it keeps it fresh every match. The problem isn't killer, it's the difference of balancing for sfw vs solo q

I feel like TCM has a high chance of at least rivalling dbd, and that's all I want, as long as a game can even threaten dbd it will force BHVR to be better, especially because TCM is going on game pass the day it launches, meaning it's gonna be ultra accessible
The problem is that the game CAN'T threaten DBD if everyone is going to play it initially, wait for DBD to get a single patch, and then jump ship back. All the people who want DBD to get competition solely so they can keep playing DBD are exactly why DBD gets no competition.
@VernulaUtUmbra not necessarily because if BHVR only does a few mediocre updates sure people may go back for a bit but they'll just return to TCM, we saw is when Friday the 13th was around, even when it dipped in popularity BHVR were still worried about it soooo
Yeah no. Though I think that DbD and TCM can co-exist in the future (perhaps), I highly doubt that TCM will ever dethrone DbD. TCM's biggest problem is the fact that the devs got the license for the first movie only. Lack of possible new content will be their biggest qualm in the future. And the fact that the gameplay is really bad and unbalanced. There is no bright future ahead for TCM unless the devs pull some sort joker from their sleeves.
Final part of this video was fantastic. The Onus is on BHVR, but also on us as a community and the very Patrons to the game it-self. Speaking with our wallets is how you make change, especially when BHVR is seemingly refusing to make changes that miiiight cost it in the short term. Amazing how they've got the time to get a movie, a board game, coffee, a comic, Supermassive to develop a game for them but wellness updates/chapters are so unbelievably out of reach because of the upper echelon at that company. We, as the players, HAVE to hold BHVR accountable when we're demanding better performance, longevity, and the health of the game.
"We, as the players, HAVE to hold BHVR accountable when we're demanding better performance, longevity, and the health of the game." Then stop playing it. Literally the only leverage you have is to make their numbers go down. You can't hold them accountable while simultaneously showing them that they're doing a "pretty good job so far" by keeping their numbers afloat. They don't care about passion, they care about numbers. Changing the system is about changing the numbers.
I'm actually pretty sad about VHS. Their game looked promising overall and they differentiated from DbD in many ways, especially with their use of actual classic horror monsters like the werewolf which BHVR seems to refuse to do.
This is a great video, thanks for making it. VHS was exactly the type of horror asym I wanted to see, and it sucks it didn't stick for multiple reasons. It even made changes which bhvr adopted into DBD such as icons for current actions lol. We do have a few other games to look forward to, like TCM, and there are a few possible underdogs as well: Carnival Hunt which was just kickstarted and should launch late this year and consoles soon after, and killer klowns, among others. I personally think the horror asym ip is too saturated by dbd to support these games long term, so I'm hoping we see some unique deathmatch styled asyms which pace more like evolved int he future, while retaining some simplicity.
I remember VHS. The early days. I was one of the first people to get a key for the closed beta, and honestly the game was pretty fun and good for like a solid 2 weeks. Then everything just went down and down. I had high hopes and it was so sad to see the game crumble.
I think the biggest problem with Dbd nowadays it's that the game isn't a horror game, I mean it is for new players and you get jumpscared sometimes but you don't feel like you're in a horror movie like F13 did While the surviving skills on Dbd are basically running between loops and doing gens, F13 gives you the opportunity to choose, you could fix a car, a boat, a phone or kill the killer, it was a nice way to guarantee that not every match would feel the same I have high expectations on Tcm, hope Gun Media brings back the immersion and horro atmosphere we had on F13
I loved Evil Dead the game. I put a ton of hours into it, and I wanna make three other points about what effected it for the long term. One was that there was a lack of content. There was a good chunk of time between when new things coming out, especially for Demon. The prices for everything were also really high- the Season Pass was 30 USD but barely had any content in it. There was also the issue of the progression system causing a huge disparity between players. The progression system meant that any new Demon or Survivor was bound to get rolled because they just couldn't keep up. There was also some issues with the meta being stale. Characters like Pablo or Amanda never quite found their footing, and characters like ED1 Ash were left in the dust while characters like Cheryl never saw competition.
In Evil Dead I think you have to play againts AI since no one plays demon but it's still pretty fun as a co-op game (It's basically a coop game when played like that) And you find matches pretty quick most of the time. The devs might have saved the game by adding that AI option.
@@TheKingmetroid you're right. i'm a massive ED fan so i'll ramble for a bit here... Evil Dead the Game was something i was crazy hyped for. there's so much they could have done since they had so many of the original voices returning. they could have expanded on the canon (as loosely that term is used within the franchise), they could have caused a spike in popularity for it, they could have made a dent in the side of the behemoth that is DBD. i think that it being Epic Store exclusive for so long really shot itself in the foot -- or cut off its own hand? i've sunk only about 70 hours at most into EDtG, versus my about 600 in DBD. Evil Dead released at a time that i could sink hours into it -- it was summer and i was fresh out of high school. but it's kind of crazy difficult to do anything if you're new to the game or if you don't sink a full-time job's worth of hours into it per week. with the addition of verbal comms, it can lead to sweats being incredibly toxic to someone despite being able to see if they're new (not that being new or having tons of hours sunk in should be a deciding factor in toxicity). my biggest gripes: the rewards for the story mode kind of suck (especially considering how difficult they are, which is fine! i feel like the reward should be something else though, even if it's just an XP boost or some random cosmetic). i think there's a lack of customizability -- new game, so i can let that slide, but it's been over a year with little to no communication from the team, the only real customizations being added being screamers, and an overall disappointing amount of content. but EDtG is MASSIVE, the maps are detailed and at launch there were two, with one other one being added that is incredibly impressive to look at. i have another issue, one that doesn't matter at all to so many people but it does to me as someone who adores the franchise: there is no interpersonal lines between the characters. None. the siblings don't interact, the close friends have no quips (since Kelly and Pablo are taken season 1, same with Amanda, so it makes some sense not to mention things that happen later in the series), the father-son duo can't look out for each other in the slightest. i think it's a minor thing that would have added so much character into the game, something that DBD for a long time did not really have, and it's a minor thing that i think would have made the game more appealing. it's eerily quiet throughout most of the matches and i think that giving the VAs extra time to record lines to be said during match (like minor comments when in the same light source, quips when one gets a headshot, post-game screen where they all just kind of awkwardly walk towards the camera) would have made the game much more enjoyable. EDtG feels like an Evil Dead entry to the franchise. it feels bloody, it feels gross, but it's missing the character that gives the franchise so much heart. also, i don't think you can turn off motion blur. i can't stand not being able to turn it off. it gives me a headache and nausea hahahaha.
Saber Interactive is the biggest problem with the game, they leave their fans in the dark 100% of the time, no community events or communication, also very slow content drops with no roadmap for the future. If any of this happened it would be in a fantastic state, but it really seems like Saber hates their fans, Evil Dead, and doesn't understand live service/assym games business models for money.
I think one overlooked aspect as to why DbD keeps going and these other ones eventually fade away, is the on the surface simplicity of DbD. There is added complexity by the perks, but on the surface, as a survivor you know exactly what to do. You fix the generators, and open the exit gate. As the Killer, you try and find the survivors, and hook them. Those other games all try and add a dozen different objectives. And nothing against them for that, they're trying to innovate the genre and add interesting elements. But i think it all becomes a bit overwhelming for new players. The DbD tutorial can be explained in like, 2 minutes. And for every potential hurdle for new players, there's a perk to help you out. If you're bad at skill checks, use Feng. If you're nervous about needing healing, use Claudette. If you think gens take too long, use Dwight. If you're not great at chases, use Kate. They all have perks that are great for beginners, but then can easily be replaced later once you're more experienced. The other games don't really do that as well for new players.
I cackled seeing “Pig Nerfed” in the Wellness Chapter. Great video! I dropped DbD a year ago cause it was clear they cared more about making new DLCs then actually balancing their game. SBMM made almost every game feel like a sweat fest, balancing was a mess, and it just wasn’t fun. Hoping the Texas Chainsaw Massacre works out!
Not even one mention about what happened to Deathgarden. It's history really paints a picture on why Dead By Daylight remains so successful. BHVR really did learn from their mistake.
Friday the 13th was a phenomenal game cus it was never trying to be serious, it was just so fun to play for hours talking to randoms trying to survive from jason. RIP.
I feel like that would have the game roll into a 9 month "season" and then a balance patch. But they already did this Wellness Patch when they did the Big rebalance addressing Call of Brine, Dead Hard and Healing. This is healthy for the game but it only delays the burnout that comes with having 1 main game that you play. I think the game is too bloated for new people to get into (grinding for perks, £12 or £20 to get the base game and then £6.00 to get DLCs along with £8 Season pass and £8 cosmetics) And then for the more experienced players they have gotten "too good" at the game and optimise the fun out of it. Competition is healthy for the consumer in theory however a splitting of player bases may cause both games to suffer as online matchmaking games live or die by the number of people queueing up to get into any given lobby. I personally want to see a game with longer ranked periods and a challenge / score ladder to try and compete on.
There are plenty of underused perks that need a change, some killers are still lacking behind a little bit, map layouts. These are all main aspects of the game that could be tweaked more in like a patch, max 2. Though, to be fair, it could go both ways, but i would definitely be interested in this more than new stuff atm.
Let's not forget about Resident Evil RESISTANCE and RE:VERSE , both were good but it was mostly fun to play survivor and in RE:VERSE, the game play felt slow or too fast and there was not enough content.
Wow you don’t know how much that effect at 13:29 messed with my head I just fixed my grip on my phone with the exact same angle with the screen itself moving on my hand I thought my phone broke. What’s the chance of that happening 😂😂
I’m going to miss Friday the 13th. from the footage we got from killer Klowns from Outer space it seems like they’re trying to keep the essence of Friday the 13th alive while keeping its own identity
Well, TCM is currently spiraling hard. Which does suck, it was alot of fun for a little while. However, DBD just did their best Halloween event in a long time, got Stranger Things back and just released Chucky. So, at least thats good.
Just you wait until someone makes a Nightmare on Elm street game! I can see that hypothetical game having a build-your-own survivor based off of a handful of archetypes going up against various incarnations of Freddy Krueger! Each variation of freddy would have different strengths, weaknesses, and abilities. I can see a high school, boiler room, auto junk yard, power plant, westin hills, elm street itself, and of course, the elm street house. Oh, and did I mention Robert Englund would providing his voice and motion capture for the ol' Fredder. Take what works for each of these games and mash 'em together. All of their strengths, none of their weaknesses! That would dethrone DBD for sure.
Friday 13th was so fun and a good game, hopefully they get the licence to the game again And they start updating again Also voice chat was so funny in that game best thing ever
Won’t happen unfortunately. The head of Gun Media said while he enjoyed working with Horror Inc. (the rights holder, and the ones who made them halt content) he’d never work with them again. Can’t really blame him honestly.
@@DragonGirl2000 Short sweet version, Victor Miller, the writer of the original film, was legally able to get the rights back to his original works. He sent Sean Cunningham, the director of the original film and at the time current rights holder a notice that he wanted to have the rights back, or wanted to be compensated fairly from all the money the franchise made because of his script. Cunningham being greedy decided to sue Miller instead. The game released and was a massive success that was bringing massive amounts of money back into the franchise, merch and film sales skyrocketed. Cunningham then made Gun Media halt all content as the money the game was bringing in was money he might have to divide to Miller and not get to keep for himself. Miller has now won the court case and even won the appeal, now a new deal needs to be reached or a new reboot series needs to be started. Miller only has the right to the original film, but the problem is the franchise sequels use the material from the original film to continue the series. When it comes to the game, they never owned the rights, Cunningham just allowed them to use the license, so he technically had full control over what could be done with the game. He told Gun Media that the lawsuit would not effect them and they had no worries to make the game, but when the game blew up, he pulled the rug out from under them so he wouldn’t lose any of that money or any more money it’d make to Miller.
I remember people excitingly talking about it when it first appeared on the scene, and then that 3 month break happened. The very next thing I heard about it was that it was shutting down. 🧍♂️
You forgot to mention "Predator Hunting Grounds", "Last Year", "White Noise 2 (wich was really cool", "Hide or Die", "Deathgarden" from BHVR, "The Blackout Club", maybe also "GTFO" and there are a few more games but I dont remember them all
I had this video playing in the background while playing minecraft, I took a break to reply to a text and i heard the creeper explosion noise and had a heart attack
My friends loved and feared me as Jason since I did a good Mickey Mouse impression. Eventually, I made up a persona called "Buttsex Joe" which was essentially me parodying hillbillies while blaring Cotton Eye Joe as Jason
Friday the thirteenth the game would've easily outnumbered dbd if it weren't for Sean Cunningham losing the rights for Friday the thirtheenth, he was such a nice guy.
I think one of the main problems with similar games to DbD is that their main target audience is going to be people who already play DbD. I heard about VHS before the first beta released but I had never seen it advertised or played by anyone other than DbD content creators.
you didn’t mention last year: the nightmare 😔 (understandably though, it was only doing well for like a week then the numbers dropped to like 14 ppl on daily, but it was an extremely fun game that didn’t get the credit it deserved. i still think about it every now and then when i play dbd just wishing it got the support dbd has
Am I missing something at 1:56? How is the new name a problem when its acronym still makes it VHS? DBD's title name isn't DBD, it's Dead By Daylight...
You would think it wouldn't be an issue right But apparently, that's something that very much happened. I guess the way it's different is that DBD never marketed themselves as "DBD" It was just the abbreviation but that was there from the very start of the game as opposed to VHS' case where they went from abbreviation to full name halfway through the game's life
identity v was the closest thing to a dbd killer ive seen, but identity v has a far different target audience and its a mobile game... which leads to a lot of people not trying it
Yeah and dbd helped idv in the start which is interesting. From what I remember the pc version of idv just isn't as good as it could be which is why it isn't as popular on anything except mobile. Also this year I baiscly left idv for dbd and have been enjoying it. For me idv just isn't as fun as it used to be because the devs really just keep releasing skins to get as much money and the community is not the best and I'm not as interested in the story anymore. Sad it was my favorite game and I got into dbd because of idv.
@jeo2233 i played idv since day one and i quit about a year or two after because the community was unbearable and yeah, what i see it looks like mostly skin focused. The gameplay seems to have fallen off a bit
@solisavem yeah same I was a veteran of idv, I did try multiple times to come back but the gameplay just feels so messy now the laggy skins it really did fall and it's a shame cause I did spend a bunch and I mean a bunch of money on skins throughout the years I played it. The only reason I haven't deleted it.
@@vi3w3dThe community inst really that bad but yeah It was just adding skin for a really long time, atleast now with got 2 new Hunters in 3 months and a fun survivor
The texas chainsaw game unfortunatly has a giant flaw and that is longevity. There is only so much that you can do with a franchise like Texas chainsaw massacre.
Not to mention that the devs only got the license for the first movie. So yeah, not so much new content unless they can snatch licenses for the other movies in the franchise
there was other game like VHS it was called LAST YEAR (now it`s free on the steam btw) and it`s sad cause there is like 16 people playing(steeam charts info) so game had potential but quickly died so like for more people to see so maybe we can revive this game
I just bought TCM, dbd has been absolute nightmare for survivor especially since xeno, new players campers, toxicity and the worst on solo,i tried TCM for 1 day and by that night i couldn't get back to dbd fast enough 😫 someone pllzzz give us something
Friday the 13th wasn't really a competitor. It was just more of a party game especially with things like proximity chat. It's what made it so different but so fun
I'm hoping for chainsaw massacre because I love dead by daylight and it's my main game but I'm looking forward to chainsaw as well and I really hope it does good so dead by daylight has that strive to improve and Stay at the top
So in summary, vhs was killed by hacker attacks and unforseen issues, f13 was killed by [[LaWsUiT]], evil dead was killed by balancing and other problems, dbd is both thriving and dying simultaneously, and tcm has an unknown fate
One of the games I thought would really compete with Dead By Daylight was Resident Evil Resistance. I played this game from release to its early ended development. The problem though was that it was bundled with Resident Evil 3 and there was no way around just getting one of the two games alone which left you having to pay $60. I still think the game would have done better had it been sold separately.
First mistake of VHS was that survivors could fight back. Another thing was that some players were in game for MONTHS ahead of other players, so I played 3 games as killer, and got absolutely destroyed, without even really knowing what to do, so I disconnected from the last match, and never turned the game on again.
I actually felt like Friday the 13th actually had great balance I had games where Jason just slaughter people immediately and games where everyone ganged up on his ass!
That's horrible balance. A lobby getting obliterated by a Jason player under 5 minutes, and a lobby tormenting a Jason player for 20 minutes tells me no one playtested this game.
@@lukemiller7864 It’s not a skill issue when I crush a lobby with Jason without even trying, and next round, I can’t catch anyone and ultimately get wrecked. That’s a balancing issue.
I still absolutely love Evil Dead The Game, and you can still find matches relatively fast. Id be lying though if I said it didnt have glaring issues. Developers taking absolute ages to address very large issues and to release new content along with some of the content not being liked or welcome by the community. Looking at you Splatter Royale 😒. I wish the developers cared as much as the community did, because as it is, its a good game in my opinion but it could of been so much more.
Honestly I just feel bad for VHS. They suffered from attacks like viruses, server issues, and people wanting the game to not succeed. It feels like part of what caused the game to fall was somewhat out of the control of the devs.
Yeah all these failed competitors aren't failing cause they're bad games they just have road block BHVR doesn't so they can't keep up. I'm surprised he didn't mention it but the reason the evil dead failed was because the staff got fired when COVID hit and when they reopened they hired people who didn't understand the game engine so noone could fix the game.
Corrections:
It seems that VHS was forced to change their name due to them trying to trademark the term VHS.
The Friday 13th lawsuit was even more complicated than what I said. Miller tried to use a copyright law to get his creations back and it was actually Cunningham who sued him to keep those rights.

I think the reason why they failed was because dead by daylight didn't revolve around one horror icon killer or other killers from one horror franchise and original license survivors from that franchise dbd gets original or licensed characters and different and unique in own way
Don't trademark a VHS smh
I personally think f13 was one of the closest to having competition with dbd because of its popularity and how fun it was. It probably would still be popular if the lawsuit had not killed the game. I hope tcm accomplishes what f13 couldn't.
Even now, its still got a fairly decent player base. I feel like it would have been up there with DBD had the lawsuit not shot its legs out so early.

It really is unfortunate. They seemed really passionate about their work.
Most of the time you wouldn't get into a match

I block the attack on contact so fast that the animation doesn’t even play, but they kinda needed superblocking, but I’m still decent as Jason now, but nowhere near and godtier when I was 12💀
Totally agree. F13 was just a fun time, DBD is a toxic sweat-fest. Fingers crossed for TCM
Also Proximity chat made it even more fun
Nah I feel like competition in the horror game space would just result in exclusive contracts and IP's being locked away; like how it is in the Streaming industry or gaming industry.
F13 was the peak of the genre.
RIP

TF2 has been begging for anything worthwhile for literal years
Warframe players fought with the old Creative Director for the game's entire lifespan for balance, fixes, QoL, you name it. Only changed recently when he moved to another project and they promoted the old Community Director to the role. (We went from someone we generally liked but disagreed with the player base on a fundamental level about much of the game, especially QoL, to probably the most beloved figure in the community who wanted a lot of the same things we did. It's been a really good ~2 years.)
Total War: Warhammer 3 has needed a bugfix and balance sweep for it's entire 2 year lifespan. (game 3 is a merger of the entire trilogy, there are a lot of issues that arose from porting the older content)
Stellaris had massive QoL and balance issues before they literally brought in a second devteam to focus entirely on maintaining older content.
Still to this day, I'm on F13 game (PS5).

@@snigdhodas5752 I mean, Friday didn't really commit suicide. More... held down and forced to starve to death.
What does "monopoly" do?
Map design. The issue was pain res hooks could spawn in a 3 gen and basically make breaking the 3 gen near impossible. VHS wasn't a rebrand it was a forced change because of the name VHS being unable to be trademarked. Not that important for the core message of the video but at the very least its a bit more context and I feel it highlights another stick on the pile of problems that VHS faced.
Yes, and the fact VHS was hard to look up because you had the movies listed under that name, and the actual vhs players.

I agree, BHVR should make a chapter named “The Metamorphosis” or “The Evolution” and have it be a maintenance/rework focused.
i lost all faith in an y game doing that, always ends up as one of the worst points for that game
That would been really cool too see and definitely make it more bearable. They could even work it into the story with the Entity evolving it’s trials.
Metamorphosis.... Oh god... Not again.... The memories.... Noooo
@@zaer-ezart There are to messed up stories you could be referring to(one a Kalfka story another a NSFW manga) and both of them are super messed up.
@@sagexalcen4708 exactly! If you decided to do the objectives alone, you were as good as dead

The cool killer animations where they can hid in certain spots to instant down the survivors was a cool concept, it wasn't broken as survivors can just go open a certain closet to free their teammates (like in LD42). sad to see alot asymmetrical games go
If it was on all platforms it would have more traction same for vhs.

DBD does a really decent job at improving the game during the mid chapter updates, so that it feels more balanced. Not everyone agrees with the changes but DBD always pays close attention to their community. Which makes it a better a game overall.
I do have to agree tbh. I think the Devs have been doing a pretty good job at listening to feedback and improving the game in recent times, which is great since without competition, the only thing that could really kill DBD was the devs themselves lol.
wow, I had no idea VHS is shutting down completely. That really sucks. I feel bad for everyone who spent money on the game. :(
DBD only just got on my radar because of Naughty Bear getting in (as a skin for trapper, I know) but researching into it I saw so many characters I recognize and love so I got rather excited.
Evolve should be forgotten about. The "game" was nothing but a store page.
@@coltonwilkie241 Should've called it Devolve
( like the teens book of the dead mechanic )
I think they should just leaned into making it a faster paced deathmatch game. This gameplay loop could have also opened the door to new possible teen weapons, and killers being more unique by not being forever to each have abilities that do generally the same thing. (Movement/Attack/Locating)
Sorry that this is pretty much me dumping my VHS redesign idea here, but I am very passionate for this game and honest to God, if the possibility arises one day where the rights to this game are available for purchase, I would definitely be interested in bringing this game back with a new coat of paint.
I really hope that TCM does well, mostly because it would spur BVHR to actually improve their game.
I didn't pre-order TCM just because I find it a good DBD alternative, but hope the game will make DBD serious competition.
I think Last Year: The Nightmare would have been a fairly good competition to dbd if the dev put a lot of work in it and they didn't get bankrupt.

I feel like TCM has a high chance of at least rivalling dbd, and that's all I want, as long as a game can even threaten dbd it will force BHVR to be better, especially because TCM is going on game pass the day it launches, meaning it's gonna be ultra accessible
TCM and killer klowns 🔥
@@LoganHunter82also too much time to release anything, it took them 4 months to release a new map and a new survivor 😢

"We, as the players, HAVE to hold BHVR accountable when we're demanding better performance, longevity, and the health of the game."
Then stop playing it.
Simple, there will never be a game where you can say:
Chucky tunneled Nicolas Cage while Lara Croft was hiding in a corner without touching an engine.
Fortnite. Different IPs but just as random if not more random lol
Meanwhile: Identity V Celebrates 6th anniversary...
IDV was approved by Bhvr to be created so it doesn't count for this subject of dbd killers
IdV, while technically a competitor, is more like a sister game to DBD. Bhvr helped develop IdV. It's why IdV has the pallet mechanics
I think the biggest problem with Dbd nowadays it's that the game isn't a horror game, I mean it is for new players and you get jumpscared sometimes but you don't feel like you're in a horror movie like F13 did
While the surviving skills on Dbd are basically running between loops and doing gens, F13 gives you the opportunity to choose, you could fix a car, a boat, a phone or kill the killer, it was a nice way to guarantee that not every match would feel the same
I have high expectations on Tcm, hope Gun Media brings back the immersion and horro atmosphere we had on F13
Wow dude you are really underrated, hope you gain some more popularity, God Bless You!
I appreciate that, thank you so much! 🙏
@@Chris-zc7xj Tbh I would rather have them making various interesting games than going live service with one

Friday the 13th was a phenomenal game cus it was never trying to be serious, it was just so fun to play for hours talking to randoms trying to survive from jason. RIP.
I love how if you pause at 13:17 you see “🐖 nerfed”💀
I remember a game a few years ago I think it was called "Last Year" I saw a few gameplays but never heard about it since.
I would legit love if they took a break from content and put in some perk reworks and patches and stuff.
I think the game is too bloated for new people to get into (grinding for perks, £12 or £20 to get the base game and then £6.00 to get DLCs along with £8 Season pass and £8 cosmetics)
And then for the more experienced players they have gotten "too good" at the game and optimise the fun out of it.
This is honestly a great and informative video
Glad you enjoyed it!

Just you wait until someone makes a Nightmare on Elm street game! Each variation of freddy would have different strengths, weaknesses, and abilities. Oh, and did I mention Robert Englund would providing his voice and motion capture for the ol' Fredder.
Take what works for each of these games and mash 'em together. All of their strengths, none of their weaknesses! That would dethrone DBD for sure.

He told Gun Media that the lawsuit would not effect them and they had no worries to make the game, but when the game blew up, he pulled the rug out from under them so he wouldn’t lose any of that money or any more money it’d make to Miller.
wait... VHS was down for 3 MONTHS?!?! goddamn 😨
I remember people excitingly talking about it when it first appeared on the scene, and then that 3 month break happened. The very next thing I heard about it was that it was shutting down. 🧍♂️
Ive still got hope for the genre. Im excited for tcm, killer klowns, and carnival hunt
Sooo.....about tcm..
@@ExplodingDucks-d2v TCM was amazing but made some really rough mistakes that cost them their longevity
You forgot to mention "Predator Hunting Grounds", "Last Year", "White Noise 2 (wich was really cool", "Hide or Die", "Deathgarden" from BHVR, "The Blackout Club", maybe also "GTFO" and there are a few more games but I dont remember them all
also Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Game but this game seems to be doing well for now
I had this video playing in the background while playing minecraft, I took a break to reply to a text and i heard the creeper explosion noise and had a heart attack

I heard about VHS before the first beta released but I had never seen it advertised or played by anyone other than DbD content creators.
i used to love watching f13 videos, its so sad that we lost a gem because of two old rags not deciding who owned what
Man that game was awesome. I hate that it died over something so stupid
you didn’t mention last year: the nightmare 😔 (understandably though, it was only doing well for like a week then the numbers dropped to like 14 ppl on daily, but it was an extremely fun game that didn’t get the credit it deserved. i still think about it every now and then when i play dbd just wishing it got the support dbd has
I started playing dbd two days ago and it’s already one of my all time favorites
wait until you get tunneled and frustrated because you havent learned to loop yet
@@leandropinto138 who says he only plays survivor and 0% killer like some weirdos do
youre def gonna blow keep it up
Thank you! 🙏
Am I missing something at 1:56? How is the new name a problem when its acronym still makes it VHS? DBD's title name isn't DBD, it's Dead By Daylight...
You would think it wouldn't be an issue right
But apparently, that's something that very much happened.
I guess the way it's different is that DBD never marketed themselves as "DBD"
It was just the abbreviation but that was there from the very start of the game as opposed to VHS' case where they went from abbreviation to full name halfway through the game's life
A "Wellness Chapter" sounds a lot like Operation:Health in Siege... sounds scary.
I've never heard of VHS but it sounds like they had a seriously unfortunate fate. It just doesn't seem right.
identity v was the closest thing to a dbd killer ive seen, but identity v has a far different target audience and its a mobile game... which leads to a lot of people not trying it
Yeah and dbd helped idv in the start which is interesting.
Underated creator, do more vids like this
the glass joe theme at the start goes hard 🔥
there was other game like VHS it was called LAST YEAR (now it`s free on the steam btw) and it`s sad cause there is like 16 people playing(steeam charts info) so game had potential but quickly died so like for more people to see so maybe we can revive this game
so no one's gonna mention Last Year???
TCM walking out in a suit:
I just bought TCM, dbd has been absolute nightmare for survivor especially since xeno, new players campers, toxicity and the worst on solo,i tried TCM for 1 day and by that night i couldn't get back to dbd fast enough 😫 someone pllzzz give us something
We have killer klowns from outer space and ghostbusters spirits unleashed now but one is unknown and the other isn’t out
Friday the 13th wasn't really a competitor. It was just more of a party game especially with things like proximity chat. It's what made it so different but so fun
I'm really hyped for TCM, I think it has huge potential
Huge potential to fail
I'm hoping for chainsaw massacre because I love dead by daylight and it's my main game but I'm looking forward to chainsaw as well and I really hope it does good so dead by daylight has that strive to improve and Stay at the top
"you get better phones" *shows iphone* "improved services" *shows netflix* "and updated norms" *shows a Hyundai*
that HAS to be intentional right?
How is the team role being able to fight back an issue?
I actually felt like Friday the 13th actually had great balance I had games where Jason just slaughter people immediately and games where everyone ganged up on his ass!
That's horrible balance.
A lobby getting obliterated by a Jason player under 5 minutes, and a lobby tormenting a Jason player for 20 minutes tells me no one playtested this game.
@@abloogywoogywoono, it means there is an expression of skill
@@lukemiller7864 It’s not a skill issue when I crush a lobby with Jason without even trying, and next round, I can’t catch anyone and ultimately get wrecked. That’s a balancing issue.
@@abloogywoogywoo sounds like a skill issue to me
@@abloogywoogywooskill issue
Dead by roblox is definitely dbds biggest competitor
Friday was before dbd and they comped friday
VHS didnt release on console so it never stood a chance
