So upsetting that these companies blatantly steal from people they know don't have the legal power to fight back. I'll remember you every Halloween when I see your design
There’s something you have to take into account if you’re a mask collector like myself.. EVERY SINGLE mask company in the 80s and 90s ripped each other off all of the time. Be something knocked off topstone, Distortions knocked off Don post, etc. This was very common back in the day for companies to do and for the most part it was what it was. This didn’t usually affect really anyone except the artists who created it. And a lot of the artists that created this stuff knocked off other artists, it was the norm. Remember that the Micheal Myers mask was a spray painted Don post 75 Captain Kirk mask. Production definitely didn’t get the Star Trek rights to use that mask. When it comes to the case of the original weeping ghost I do agree that it was uncool of funworld to do what they did but it was the norm. They probably weren’t thinking about it on a very large scale. I do believe they created a much better product but the issue lies within how they deny the history. All Lauren wanted was to be credited by funworld.
Not gonna lie, I like your normal DBD content, but this is a pretty cool 2nd series, if you'd make it into that. We all know the plot and references of iconic killers in DBD, but the story of the IPs is a different beast itself and I feel like I haven't seen other content creators making things like this. Hopefully more in the future!
The positive is it is that we do now know who the original artist is. I am sure there are many many cases of beloved designs and iconography whose creator has long since been forgotten to where it can no longer be proven. Those cases are particularly sad. It's good Gitthens seems to be happy with the fact their design is being used but I can completely understand if this scenario would be worse to an artist than for their work not to be recognised at all.
Thank you for covering this, I saw that same twitter thread when it came out at the time. I even went as Ghost Face this Halloween. Pretty sad how such an iconic mask was a stolen idea.
10:13 Ex spirit Halloween worker here! So what you said about walls of mask being copied by famous recent arts is sadly true. The amount of mask I've seen that has obviously been ripped off from other people's work (eyeless jack, jeef the killer, momo, and creepy cat) are all sadly being sold and nothing is being done about it.
@@jtlmusic8183 it really does suck that they do. But ngl it is funny sometimes when you see an obvs costume from popular brands also have a copy cate (I saw a couple of princes peach rip offs which imo is semi justified)
The Icon of Halloween!! I'm a big fan of Ghostface, and Scream. I love the fact that it's just a mask, something anyone could get... And anyone can wear the mask Great video ✌️very sad to know the whole origin story
Artists are always getting their works ripped off in some way, seems like its been the same even before it happening all the time on the internet. Great video, very informative!
Yea but him and the original company are happy ppl appreciate the mask plus fun world is responsible for giving that smooth jawling mouth that curve up and mass product is why the making of scream even discover the mask in someone house in bed if they didn't. Who knows scream would bit beeb
Ohh wow, that’s kinda sad and disrespectful to the original designer. Dude is humble to not invest and sue fun world. He’d make a lot of money if he won.
This is the sad case. Someone who enjoys what they do would have appreciated the movie and left it alone. And that’s what Lorren did. Being self aware is more enough for him. Props.
I remember one Halloween nearly every kid that came to our door was wearing the Scream mask, I have no idea if they were funworld ones as I’m in the U.K. I remember some variants which had a bleeding effect thanks to a transparent plastic front and a hand pump. There was also one with a daft face and stuck out tongue from the wassup parody from Scary Movie.
Yo since there aren't a lot of comments here I'm just gonna say it. YOU SIR DO BOT GET ENOUGH CREDIT FOR WHAT YOU DO. You have videos with almost 1 million views and you don't have nearly enough subs. So I just wanna say. You deserve all the good coming for you
Spirit Halloween ripped off a product (and its contents therein) which I have been selling for a decade plus. But because my brand is small (just me) wtf can i do against them? According to them "nothing" Spirit has also done this to other artist I know or know of. So this is common in masks and halloween items unfortunately.
Nice catch, I didn't notice that at first I didn't show it clearly but in that same video, they also show off a bunch of Looney Tunes masks because they had a mask deal with Warner Brothers so that's probably why there's a Swamp Thing there.
Whats also nuts is burchbench himself made the silent screamer and the banshee weirdly they actually hired him i heard and still screwed him over even after collabing with funworld
Ghost Face also just made an appearance in Crytek's Hunt: Showdown 1896. It's caused a bit of a stir because as the game's name implies, it's set in the late 1800s which makes the Ghost Face mask look REALLY out of place. It's a cool cosmetic DLC, but I myself am having a hard time justifying it. They gave it some lore to make it fit within the game's context, but for a game that has always had a meticulously curated aesthetic it's a slippery slope in my opinion.
Thank you for this! I definitely won’t be boycotting. Even though we probably should. Because I love this mask. But I am glad I now know who the true creator was!
I didnt even know that you made this vid like its astonishing how good you make videos outside of dbd. Im just, wow you are so good at making these vid. I cant, i dont understand how are you this small like this is honestly such good content i hope the best for you cause you 100% deserve it.
Imagine what one of those og og ones would be wprth thiers gotta be some out thier still also it qpuls be very interesting to see an all white ghostface
Firstly, thank you so much for the video. It was truly entertaining. So I'm mixed on my opinion of this. On one hand, the original mask is extremely close to what we have today, almost identical. And my thoughts are, yeah, he got screwed. That's my more emotional opinion because I believe in doing right by others. Now my more legal(and I am no lawyer) opinion is, no, he did not get screwed. And this is why I feel thay way. A: he never sought to get a TM(trade mark) for his original design. B: he did not seek legal action against Fun World after he saw his design for sale in a drug store long before Scream was even a movie, stating the reason being that he had left that part of his life behind and moved on. It's also stated that his studio had already closed its doors. I find it concerning that it's only now that the artist(I'm assuming Loren is part of this movement of getting credit? Correct me if I am wrong please) is trying to get credit for his alleged design, as it seems to me it's an attempt to grab some movie money from the success of the Scream franchise. He can challenge for a creator credit, but in order to win, he would need to have something that clearly states that HE created it and not Fun World(I.E. drawings of the design that are signed and dated prior to Fun World releasing their product). That is how copyrights work. You are wrong about the 30% thing, it is not a myth. If it was, then people like Weird Al and anyone who does a parody of something should be sued
I can see your point there yeah, just a tricky situation it seems I also fact checked the 30% copyright thing before the video and again just now and I can verify that it is indeed a myth Parody is something else and is a protected form of speech
@LiussDBD Hey man! :) Thanks for the response. I checked it out myself, and I stand corrected on the 30% rule. It does say there are certain circumstances where it is permitted. One of those is if the creator gives permission, but that's neither here or there. In order for it to be copyright infringement, Loren would have to hold the copyright on the IP.
@@LiussDBD if you're interested, check out a documentary called Batman & Bill. It's about the REAL creator of Batman and how he got screwed out of literally BILLIONS
