You can’t reason with that. You can’t look at his childhood and see what made him the way is, you can’t find redemption. We want so desperately to find motives that it’s hard to understand some people are just genuinely evil

humanizing your monster makes them way scarier. you could actually see them on the street and not know. art does gross shit and hes a sick piece of shit but hes not that scary, at least in a movie.
@@dpounder101I can understand this perspective too and why I’m a big fan of most of Stephen Kings books. He tends to make humans the real monsters. But I love the terrifier franchise.
What I noticed in the first terrifier movie was that it subtly kind of ridiculed the “I can fix him” trope. Dawn seems like she has this type of mentality when it came to Art (especially when she took that photo with him and said “aw” at art giving Tara the ring) but that ended up with her getting sliced in half. It showed that no matter how much kindness you show him and how sweet you are when interacting with him, Art will not let down the opportunity to brutally torture and murder someone. He Can Not be fixed.

@@libradawg9yea it’s definitely unrealistic how long they stay alive but I like to head canon it as part of his supernatural abilities. Being able to prolong his victims life until he’s had all his fun torturing them
Imo, your comment is exactly correct. That is the literal reason why he is so scary to me. Bc the pain he puts his victims through, I have imagined myself going through it as well.
i love this idea of art being so close to being human, yet he’s not quite there. It feels like something that could happen while also giving him this supernatural vibe that doesn’t take away from the scariness of the character. They hit the perfect balance between being known and unknown. Bravo Vince
I always had a theory that Art was a regular serial killer from a traveling circus who made a deal with the devil to continue his rampage but he required a sacrifice so Art cut his tongue out so he couldn’t speak
Art IS iconic. He’s going to go down in history. It’s exciting seeing it unfold since I wasn’t born or was too young when the Iconic horror icons of yesteryear were being introduced to the zeitgeist. I’m so excited for Terrifier 4 and even more! I hope they give him more lore and more opportunities to let us know what he’s all about.
Fun fact. Art the Clown was an inspiration for an enemy in an indie game called Fear and Hunger 2: Termina. The enemy in the game is called Needles the Clown. The character is very similar to Art the Clown in many ways. Needles the Clown stalks and hunts down the survivors in the game one by one in many brutal ways. When you do fight Needles the Clown, a lot of his attacks are very similar to Art. Needles preferred weapon is a chain with various sharp medical tools attached to it. Scalpels, needles, etc. One move that Needles does is inject your party members with a syringe to give them various debuffs. If you just so happen to hack off enough of Needles limbs and get him down to the last bits of his health, Needles will pull an Art the Clown and drop the chain whip and pull out a gun to use against your party members.
I think the reason Art occasionally doesn’t kill a given individual is because they "play along" with him. The prime example is the kids who took candy. They didn't freak out and try to run. They just did what kids are meant to do. They played their role in the situation, so even when one of them "broke" his rule and tried to take multiple, he gave them a pass where he otherwise may have punished them.
I feel like Allie had a better chance of survival if she just gave Art the candy. Granted, he still might’ve killed her but I would have liked to see what he would’ve done if she “played along”
@@jacklemm1518 Im certain he would've killed her had she given him candy still, but i do not think he would've been anywhere near as brutal about it. At most a prolonged stabbing death, but he wouldn't have gone all theatrical with the salt/bleach and arm ripping etc. I also saw another comment say that when Allie called Art a 'mime' as opposed to a clown that vexed him even more. The actor who plays Art said so. To summarise, if she hadn't insulted Art she wouldn't have died the way she did.
Art's black and white costume and makeup and the fact he never talks makes me think he's supposed to be a mime. Mimes are silent clowns. They communicate with exaggerated movements and facial expressions. He’s ridiculously violent just because.
Art honking the horn at Vicky through the door in Terrifier gets me every time. The only clown in film history to make me laugh besides Tim Curry’s Pennywise
Not to be the wet blanket here but I really think he could be funnier. I mean, all he does is laugh silently, mime clownish movements and such. In the 2nd movie, he does more but for me, it's not knee-slapping comedy. He's a little funny, a little charismatic but the fact that he's utterly detestable and disgusting far outweighs the humor in my opinion. I'm not afraid of him but he's so horrible that I can't exactly like him, either. That is just my opinion, of course.
The first terrifier movie really got me. I already knew after watching all hallows Eve and then “Terrifier” that Art was going to be an iconic horror villain
I feel like part of where his occasional sparing comes from is the feeling that he's being appreciated in some fashion. When the boy peers through the Halloween store window and sees him with the head, thinking it's fake, he calls it cool and is delighted by the display. When the trick-or-treat children think the human head candy bucket is fake, they are entertained by his antics and happily take candy from the bowl. At first, he seems almost annoyed with his surviving faceless victim, but when she goes mad and falls in love with him, he lets her participate in his rebirth. He adores the fear on his victims faces, but a lack of fear seems key in someone surviving their encounter with Art. That's my two cents anyways.
Well Dawn wasnt really scared of Art in the 1st Terrifier but she still ended up being brutally massacred, but maybe the disrespect can also have Art kill you
@@AliAA20036like the other person said maybe the blatant disrespect is what got her ass mutilated 💀 Edit: Okay so I JUST remembered the cat lady with the "baby" in the first movie.....cause she showed him sympathy and tried to see good in him but it turns out at the start she was very frightened so that probably sealed her fate and he decided to fuck her up too 😭
I think you missed something important: Art only goes after Sienna and Johnathan because the entity imitating the Pale Girl pointed him that way. My theory is that there's another entity that opposed that one which gave their father his visions
One of the scariest things about Art is how some of this victims manage to survive for a time after injuries that would have long killed someone. It’s like he has an ability to cause them to live long enough to maximize their pain.
Also how brutal his kills are to victims that aren't assholes like look at the slashers of the 80s the characters are fine, not always terrible people, sometimes they're nice and their kills are quick deaths, while the 2000s Amp the brutality up the victims are the worst. While with Art, he doesn't give a shit if you're a good person he's going to kill you in a slow a painful way
Its weird. This video, this specific episode of Horror History is such a comfort video of mine. And I have never seen anything featuring Art the Clown other than this.
34:00 it's established that the father had a form of psychic awareness which he passed onto his children. He had visions of Art who his daughter would eventually encounter, likely amplified or distorted by his cancer, which drove him insane.
The third movie is so good, and actually adds some context to his torturing of certain victims, without killing them. Looking for to an updated version of this once Leone is done with his story.
I think the scariest part about Art is that he resurrects so quickly, literally the same day after Terrifier (In Terrifier 2) it shows he's back. Unlike Pennywise who's back every 27 years
My favorite thing about Art is that his personality actually justifies being a clown. He's not just designed that way to be creepy, his style and mannerisms suit a clown character. This is probably in large part because of the new actor, he's an icon
Art is one of the only horror characters that can consistently scare me and make me want to keep the lights on at night. This is great because sometimes I feel immune to horror but I'm glad I can still get the feeling I used to get watching every horror movie when I was younger
I think one of the scariest things about art is the fact that once you see him, it's already too late for you. He'll stop at nothing to accomplish his goal, not even death can stop him
With the updated knowledge I have after seeing Terrifier 3, I wonder what changes knowing that he doesn't just come out on Halloween but is actually active as long as Sienna is alive and accessable.
The original movie with Mike Gianelli as Art truly got me, it was unique and gruesome, but that part at the end when he starts walking towards the tv at us the audience after the babysitter finds the dead kids. I got chills and it evoked the excitement and scares I felt as a child first watching horror movies. David Thorton does a great job, but I have to give praise to Mike for doing an amazing job not being a professional actor.
The theory of Art possibly being a demon that possesses artists and tortures them would be so cool (though I know it will never be). I love that Leone left Art open for theories and interpretation bc it makes his lore so jumbled and interesting because there’s really nothing to base it off of.I’m so excited to see what his story evolves into!! fantastic video!!!
What I find most terrifying and also in a twisted way funny, about Art compared to other horror villains, is the fact he seemingly has fun while brutally killing and torturing people, he always has reactions to the ways his victims react which makes him more terrifying than someone like Micheal Myers or Jason, he always seems genuinely annoyed when his victims fight back and he often toys with his victims in a way that makes it seem like he’s playing a game and having fun while doing it.
I've heard people complain "why would the dad design such a reveling costume for his daughter?" but it sounds like to me he didn't design it, he just had a vision of the future and drew what he saw. Her reaction to her dad's drawings seems to suggest she designed the costume and was surprised her dad drew it before she even made it.
Terrifier gives me conflicted emotions. When Art is in his “act” he’s super charismatic and fun to watch. Then you’re hit with the sickening brutality of his kills. I had to take a break halfway through the first Terrifier movie and watch something happy and sunshiny 😂
I had "fun" with second movie and only for one reason. I am from small EU country so we don't get whole lot of horror movies in theaters, and when we do, it's mainly just some mainstream stuff like Conjuring 25, so it was hilarious watching people be confused and shocked watching Terrifier 2, completely uncensored in theaters. They have no idea what they were in for, because I bet most didn't even know what first movie was about, they were mainly just "Well we have this horror movie to watch, I guess?".
I knew Art was one of the scariest things I’d ever seen, despite laughing at him here and there, because I was clinging to my husband while watching Terrifier last night lol whenever we got a commercial break I felt like I could finally breathe for a second
The second one made me do that, especially the scene in the bedroom. I had to look away and do something else. It was too brutal and crazy. However, that's supposed to be the point of a true horror movie. Props to Damien Leone for his work 🙌✌️
I like the idea of Art becoming more skeletal and scary after every killing spree. It's just like Michael becoming more of an indestructible shape every single time he gets a kill.
44:50 It's because he stabbed her with the sword her father made and Sienna is immune to being harmed or killed by it. That's seen when the cuts on her hand from trying to save her brother are also healed.
@@cashthecurator666 idk if Michael has killed kids, we have a little bit of the terrifier 3 trailer and the first 5 mins are supposed to be "controversial" and they are involving a child. The kid is dying.
9:43 😂 dude, you’re hysterical! Thanks for all this sweet Art Lore! He’s lowkey become a special interest of mine, so I try to consume as much content pertaining to him as possible. Yours just seems to be the best so far!
I went to one of the largest "flea" markets in Mexico City today, where they sell virtually everything you can imagine. Currently, the entire market is brimming with Halloween costumes and masks, and each one of them features merchandise related to Art the Clown. It's mind-blowing to have followed Art from the beginning and now witness that hundreds of markets carry his costumes, masks, and weapons - and they are incredibly affordable, typically around 20 dollars for a full costume. I'm willing to bet that thousands of Mexicans will be dressed as Art this Halloween, and that is simply amazing.
I appreciate the parallels you draw between Art and Michael Meyers; it really demonstrates your dedication to research and knowledge of the genre. Good stuff.
for me, art is both horrifyingly scary and brutal, yet is such a silly guy. Honestly the scene where he’s trying on glasses and shit made me realise i shouldn’t be as scared of him as i was. he is truly one of the greatest horror characters ever as your terrified of him yet you sort of, deep down, love him in a way.
He could very well be a thought form. Everyone believes he is an indestructible evil, so he is. Its why he needs an audience, so more people will get on board his legend
The strange thing is that aside from the acts of violence in themselves, I actually think Art is a pretty funny clown. The scene with the sunglasses and accessories at the costume store is utterly hilarious to me.
I'd just like to say Kudos to David for his distinguished portrayal of Art. all of the previous versions conveyed the ominous and eerie nature well, but David truly added depth to the character.
The thing with Art being unable to open the door in "Terrifier" short film can fit in with Demon Lore. A demon cannot enter through a threshold without *being willingly invited in by the inhabitant*.This rule also affects Vampyrs / Vampires.
Excited to see an update of this with the newest addition being released now (at least in theater at this time), your video is very informative and my fiance and I stumbled upon the Terrifier series last halloween. Instantly we were fans.
I really admire your dedication and can't even IMAGINE how much time this must take! Art is really terrifying to me, the silence, the gore and the brutality of the character is all so real.
I think what I appreciate most about Art is the same thing I appreciate about the Killer Klownz from Outer Space: they’re made with genuine appreciation for the performance art of clowning. I think “scary clown” tropes rely on a fundamental misunderstanding of what a clown is. They just say, “clowns are scary because they are disarming,” instead of the perspective of “clowns make being disarmed FUNNY.” While Art isn’t quite as successful at being a love story to clowns as an art form as Killer Klownz, he does make a genuine effort to be a real clown and not just a sadist in face paint.
Just watched this for the first time. What a fun movie! Perfect lighting, gore camera work. Not one shakey camera shot to add phony drama. I can’t wait to finish all these.
Oh heck yea!! I got to meet some of the cast and the director of Terrifier and they were so so nice. Glad to see Art is getting more recognition that he deserves, he's an absolute icon!
I stumbled upon this series when I was in college. Some students were watching Terrifier in the ballroom and it was at the scene where Art saws Dawn in half and I was just blown away by the brutality of it. The fact that they went that far but still made something genuinely good, that drew me in.
One detail that I find interesting is the fact that the journalist that is attacked by Art's victim is the same actress that played the babysitter in the anthology.
I am rarely scared of horror movies and love the horror characters but art is ducking terrifying to me, I saw someone dressed up as him once for early Halloween stuff and I legit froze of fear
I saw in an interview with David that in terms of the scene with the cat lady and his "attachment to innocent childhood", he said Art is pretty much just an evil prick who seems like he has humaness and then when you let your guard down, he takes your face and wears it as a mask.
I like the idea of him not being linked to a well known evil being, but being something new that is powerful, but more like a third party that noone heard of yet, which makes it more mysterious
Art and Kruger are my favorite Demons in the horror film world. These two collabing would be insane! I imagine a movie where Art is “sleeping” or taking a nap and he meets his match for the first time and his only way of escaping is to try and bring Freddy out into the real world. While Freddy’s objective is to keep Art locked in to the dream world forever. That would be fascinating to see lol.
I want to see Art and Freddy escape a Jigsaw game made specifically for them. They'd do it easily, but I want to see what Jigsaw would come up with for these demons.
My perspective has been that Art is about terror. His vulnerability works as an element of that terror. He demonstrates various supernatural abilities but in a limited way to stoke terror. His nose and cheekbones show that he's not actually quite human but the make-up hides that and leaves it as an ambiguous element of his face to unsettle those looking at him along with his teeth. He is human enough to go where he wants to go and not be an obvious threat. He is human enough that his behavior is more upsetting and unsettling. Being subject to the various attacks and injuries gives the victims the impression of humanity and then more terror when he keeps reappearing. There is the trope that the slasher isn't dead when you think they are dead so Art feigns defeat to give his victims false hope that he can take away over and over. The point of Lovecraftian horror is that humans are meaningless and you can't win. Sienna stopped Art only due to magical intervention related to her fathers madness. She didn't really kill him, even with the supernatural intervention. Everything about Art is chosen and curated for the singular goal of terror. His vulnerabilities only exist because they are tools in that tool box. Death is just an interval to allow people to worry, wonder, and let their minds work for him. Art always wins.
I feel like art is way scarier than Michael or Jason because he seems to actually enjoy killing his victims, while Jason and Michael both don’t really have reactions or expressions art laughs when killing his victims and almost always has a smile on his face when inflicting pain onto others something not seen of in other slashers, that and the fact that he just walks around acting goofy while the others stalk and have no emotion, I feel like the fact that he sees killing as a fun game is reason enough to state that he is “more evil” than Michael
It's the practical effects that make it so very good. And just like some of the best older horror movies that have stood the test of time like Evil Dead, Sleep away Camp just to name two of my favorites. Though they're old they are still fun to watch. Terrifier wasn't all messed up with computer effects. And now that the third trailer was released I'm confident 3 will be just as good and won't fall victim to the 3rd installment curse like oh so many others movies have
Can’t thank you enough for this Art the clown biography. You 💯 right about Art at 45:11 he knew he couldn’t die permanently so he let Sienna cut his head off.
i love the way art's attention to detail varies in his kills. he uses the displays of the bodies to mentlly wear down his victims. in the secon dmovie particularly, it's clear that if you are the target art has chosen, you will not survive. he will kill people around you to make feel as trapped as possible. the first movie was a bit different, where once he had killed tara he was able to use her body to scare tara's sister, etc. it seems his entire thing is just fear. especially from that scene in terrifier two when he is holding the store clerk's head and posing with the other figurines and the kind thinks it's fake. it confuses him when people aren't afraid so instead of spending the entire night of halloween trying to torment the entire town, he just picks one person, sometimes getting sidetracked with small scares, (the window display, the pizza place murders, etc.)
I remember when I saw the first Terrifier I told my then girlfriend that he seemed like a great character for the modern horror era. 3 movies and a music video later, I think it's safe to say I was correct. What a fantastic slasher icon!
The arc of Art in the home shares similarities to The Clown Doll, or The Babysitter and the man upstairs urban legend. The babysitter and 2 kids, Art sneaking around the house, the babysitter starting to freak out as the night progresses. The urban legend is great and in my eyes is a cautionary tale warning us to not be fooled and let our guard down when something....even the slightest thing is off.
As someone who grew up on the greats, Freddy, Jason, Michael, etc, I think Art deserves to be up there with them. He is clearly an homage as you pointed out all the parallels to other older horror movies. He’s also just so much fun and is my baby girl
I reckon the reason Art didnt just open the car door is because his whole thing is to scare and terroise people, so he strings his kills out. Apparently he poses abilitly to keep his victims alive longer while he kills them which links back to the whole terrorising people which is sicking but really cool!!! Great video man!
Dude I’m drunk and fell in love with your witty narration of your video and idky but everytime your logo poppped up between scenes an ad would play which I thought was perfectly set up so kudos to you homie 🤙🏼
14:28 FINALLY a horror movie where someone actually thinks to just poke a hole through the cling wrap. I get some people are going to panic but that's actually the first time I've seen someone get attacked like that and think to just rip it. It's flimsy stretchy plastic and that always bugged me😭🤣
Literally just met David Howard Thornton on Saturday and he was so fun and sweet. Which makes the character he plays being so different to be even more scary. 😅😅😅
A little information about Art's revival and the little girl who follows him around According to the creator, the little girl revived Art to "fight his new nemesis" (Sianna)
I do think he carries that same level of fear that Michael Myers had instilled in me when I was a kid. What sets him apart is that in this day and age of "elevated horror", I usually would react to those situations before they would likely attack. Art however, is obviously creepy and unafraid to attack right away, which makes his presence scary as hell.
Art takes notes from all the greatest slashers, Michael with his silence and slow movements, Jason for his creativity, Freddy for his joy of creative killing, and all three for his ability to always come back, but his “friendly” (put it in quotes because he’s not) demeanor is like that of Chucky, a big fish swimming with small prey, and with his backstory hopefully never revealed, he’ll be the new classic for years of upcoming horror fans. Also go check out Ice Nine Kills new video about Art or their two Solver Scream albums, trust me, it’s worth it.
i remember watching the first terrifier and the utter shock that i felt when he shot tara, it felt like such a cheap out, but now that i understand the lore it makes so much sense and i love it

Well, that's two clowns in video games named "Needles" ...

Art already influencing the masses. People recognize him. And he's also showing up in other media.
@jacklemm1518 and if she gave him candy, he'd probably give her a lot quicker death
Yea this doesn’t really track though because the one girl takes a selfie with him at the restaurant and such but she got the worst death ever
@@Chancho3232I was thinking this too!
Art's black and white costume and makeup and the fact he never talks makes me think he's supposed to be a mime. Mimes are silent clowns. They communicate with exaggerated movements and facial expressions. He’s ridiculously violent just because.
Props to David Howard Thornton for making art both the funniest and the most terrifying clown in all of media

@@CCnoodlehe’s very sweet irl

I love that these videos are able to just be heard and you don't even have to see the screen to watch it. It's awesome
Well Dawn wasnt really scared of Art in the 1st Terrifier but she still ended up being brutally massacred, but maybe the disrespect can also have Art kill you
Dawn was not scared and she got cut in half

I think you missed something important: Art only goes after Sienna and Johnathan because the entity imitating the Pale Girl pointed him that way. My theory is that there's another entity that opposed that one which gave their father his visions
One of the scariest things about Art is how some of this victims manage to survive for a time after injuries that would have long killed someone. It’s like he has an ability to cause them to live long enough to maximize their pain.
I agree with this because dawn should have died when that saw passed her blatter. But she screamed until it reached her head!!!!
Someone said the director pointed out he has some kind of supernatural power so his victims still feel pain, pretty fucked up
Oltre al potere al potere soprannaturale, Art quando tortura è estremamente preciso
the director said he at a con that he had the ability for people to live longer
Also how brutal his kills are to victims that aren't assholes like look at the slashers of the 80s the characters are fine, not always terrible people, sometimes they're nice and their kills are quick deaths, while the 2000s Amp the brutality up the victims are the worst. While with Art, he doesn't give a shit if you're a good person he's going to kill you in a slow a painful way

Unlike Pennywise who's back every 27 years
In all hallows eve he pretty much resurrected in minutes.
My favorite thing about Art is that his personality actually justifies being a clown. He's not just designed that way to be creepy, his style and mannerisms suit a clown character. This is probably in large part because of the new actor, he's an icon

David Thorton does a great job, but I have to give praise to Mike for doing an amazing job not being a professional actor.
All hallows eve is so good
The theory of Art possibly being a demon that possesses artists and tortures them would be so cool (though I know it will never be). I love that Leone left Art open for theories and interpretation bc it makes his lore so jumbled and interesting because there’s really nothing to base it off of.I’m so excited to see what his story evolves into!! fantastic video!!!
Art is my favorite slasher, and wow! Great video. I’ve seen nearly all of this franchise, and you didn’t miss a beat!
The picture the dad draws isn't his daughter, it's just a person in the costume. The daughter then sees the picture and models the costume after it.
But then again in the new terrifier movie we see that a slave demon is making it by force from the gods?
She said numerous times that her dad drew that character all the time for her so when she saw it in the book it wasn't the first time she saw it.
He drew the character for her to aspire to be like, when she was a little girl, which is arguably very weird

The thing with Art being unable to open the door in "Terrifier" short film can fit in with Demon Lore. A demon cannot enter through a threshold without *being willingly invited in by the inhabitant*.This rule also affects Vampyrs / Vampires.

This was so well articulated ! Thank wish the 3rd film was added to this amazing video.
Your comment is underrated.

A little information about Art's revival and the little girl who follows him around
According to the creator, the little girl revived Art to "fight his new nemesis" (Sianna)
The decision to make art unpredictable is perfect. I think it was on point and it's one of my favorite things about him
Art takes notes from all the greatest slashers, Michael with his silence and slow movements, Jason for his creativity, Freddy for his joy of creative killing, and all three for his ability to always come back, but his “friendly” (put it in quotes because he’s not) demeanor is like that of Chucky, a big fish swimming with small prey, and with his backstory hopefully never revealed, he’ll be the new classic for years of upcoming horror fans.
Also go check out Ice Nine Kills new video about Art or their two Solver Scream albums, trust me, it’s worth it.
