A high level diplomat from the US Embassy in The Philippines uses Mr Paul as a communications asset. This guy has been a big cultural and economic influence in The Philippines.
It’s so easy to fall into as an expat, you arrive in a new country, everything is different and there is a sort of holiday environment, you go out looking to make new friends and then you find them, the expats, hanging out at the local expat cafe or bar, it starts out innocent enough, just a couple of beers with the guys, yea it’s a little early but hey, it must be 5:00 pm somewhere right, before you know it you are right there with the worst of the lot, a beer in your hand already and it’s barely 9:00 am, it’s a slippery slope, don’t do it guys, it will destroy your health. My liver is currently hanging by a thread and my doctor has advised me to donate my body, not to science but to science fiction.
24 years sober this year. Still doing it one day at a time. Not worrying about tomorrow or yesterday. One sip and right back where I was 24 years ago almost instantly. So you are never cured!! Ever!
i dont believe that. i know thats what AA tells you but i have not found that to be true. i fell off the wagon after years sober and didnt drink again after that 1 night and it was years later before i did it again and again it was years later and i havent drank since. the last time was in 2017. i just didnt care for it when i did it.
Great topic. The truth is always unpleasant. At 62 and i became an alcoholic at 59 because of life experiences. I never thought it happened. It creeps up on you until you realize you are. Now, ive realized it and am trying to reverse course. Ive got a good woman whose supportive. I hope this workrs for me.
You have my heartfelt congratulations on being sober for 5 years, mate. I had an uncle that was a periodic drinker, and he bought a suitcase full of liquor and locked himself away in his secluded house, just went to the shop if he needed food. Constantly drunk until it was empty. Then he worked for another 11 months and back on the drink again, every year. He got together with a girl that also was a periodic drinker, and they took care of each other, as their periods was not the same. He lost his life to a heart attack while she was blind drunk, and was not able to understand that he needed help. A totally tragic story. The alcohol is a plague to those who get hooked.
Being sober is a wonderful gift once your light goes on. I lived in Asia for five years and networking with other ex-pats in A.A. is a great way to go. Great networking, meeting new people and meeting new friends. Great job Paul.

Currently I work as an RN for the VA, but did work a few years at an addiction center. It’s sad the destruction caused by addiction. I once worked on a cardiac floor and this young woman at the age of 20 was admitted to my floor. She still had her surgical site from an open heart in the process of healing. She had her heart valve replaced because she had vegetation on it from endocarditis caused by iv drug abuse. She came back into the hospital because she started using again after her discharge. As I was doing my assessment she asked me if she had endocarditis again on her new heart valve, what will happen. I told her the truth: hospice. I told her they would likely just treat her with iv abx that likely won’t resolve the infection but no cardiovascular surgeon will touch her now. This was a common occurrence I saw. Really sad
At young age , My parents talked to me about the effects and addictions of drugs and alcohol. Never been interested on that. Communication from early stage helps a lot. Good luck
Wishing you the best Aaron. We humans are always addicted to something. The key is to replace it for a different addiction, hiking nature trails, Helping street dogs or cats, Beach. Hopefully you find that positive addiction
If you’re a real alcoholic as defined in the Big Book, replacing booze with other stuff doesn’t work. It takes working the steps, spiritual fitness, and understanding there’s a power greater the yourself that will help you stay sober… Trust me, if hobbies, women, hiking, etc, etc, could keep me sober I would have gotten sober long before I did. Thanks for a really great video!!! What an unbelievable young man Arron is! What an awful life Arron has lived in his 32 years. Both my parents were alcoholics. Alls I can remember when I was young was constant fights and yelling amongst the two most important people in my life. I’m 76 now and have never drank alcohol, never smoked, and never used any drugs. Sometimes I wonder if my life would have been much easier if I had over indulged on those things. Keep up your new life Arron and best wishes for your future!!!
Great to hear Aaron's story. As person myself also in recovery. Sharing is a key. We as alcoholics can only keep what we have by giving it away to others. There a quite a few meetings in Dumaguete and I connected with them in Jan/Feb/2024. Also couple in Valencia area. Hej Paul 🙏🌹💕Thank you for another wonderful video and not least this one with a lovely youthful, honest man who dares to open up about his struggles in life as alcoholics. There are far too many who are without wanting to acknowledge it or simply choose to live with it, and the latter is usually the easiest thing to get into trouble from your addiction 🥺🙏🙈😥I myself have had to get hold of myself several times, as it is super easy to start drinking alcohol, but incredibly difficult for most people to stop again once it has taken hold of one's life and begins to break down our body and soul. Great respect for the 5 years without alcohol Aaron 🙏
Wow Paul and Arron, what an awesome interview, what great questioning and answers. Arron, I am extremely proud of you for making the changes you did at an early age, how many go 10, 20, 30, or more years in active addiction. Or maybe never find themselves or re-claim their lives. Just a great all-around learning and teaching video. Keep up the great work, way to go!! I hope you find the life you seek in the Philippines, I hope you can find someone to make you happy and spend your life with. You have a new lease on your life, run with it!! God Bless you, Paul and Aaron. Take Care.
Paul, I was a subscriber to your channel a when you first started. I remember you having less than 500 subscribers. I have since resubscribed and I see you're close to 100,000 subscribers !!!! Congratulations !!!! Thank you for what you do
Great interview with Aaron, Paul👍 He’s very candid about his addiction, and recovery. Praying for his continued journey into sobriety 🙏 I was fortunate enough to realize that too much of a good thing isn’t always a good thing, and was able to get control of my situation on my own. But it was close. 🤪 Hey Paul, hopefully when Christine and I come back there 9/02-07, we can celebrate your 100+K subscribers! 🤞
I drank my first beer at 14. I turn 64 this year and will celebrate 50 years of beer drinking 🍺. I’m retired. I’m solo. Some folks smoke. Some drink coffee. I drink beer. Am I an alcoholic? Maybe. But I’m not hurting anyone.
It's cool if you enjoying it, my grandad was the same , lifelong soak but always happy with it , never rude , always social.. did it until the day he died at 78
Got to love this young man.. I'll bet his parents are proud of him, as well as his brother that's going through some problems.. I was watching your expressions Paul and listening to some of your questions I could tell it brought back memories nightmares.. raise four kids been there and done that.. I don't see how a parent can't blame themselves for what happens to their kids it's the love you have for your own blood... If one of my kids had that background and were in the Philippines that's a place where a lot of s*** can go wrong when it comes to booze... But he appears to have a handle on it.. God blesshim for that.. Paul I would love if an expat your age we're going to channel that has an alcohol or drug problem and tell us how they're surviving and what help they got, yet that's a very personal personal thing in life and probably never going to happen completely understand that.. well done Paul.. does Google give you those search you're wearing Paul?? How's your father doing these days brother?
i'm sober since birth. jacko said "beat it!" lolz. To American teenagers out there who are prone to these kind of things, hey the Philippines is one of the best place for you to be out of those nasty things. Your life will surely be redirected again to a more sober beautiful happy kind of life. Thank you Aaron for sharing your story and thank you also to Paul for allowing us to see how life for the teenagers in the US was and is. It can be prevented. Talk to your parents, come to the Philippines and be a good full of values man or woman. Remember in the Philippines our beloved previous President Rodrigo Roa Duterte's very famous war on drugs, it helped us a lot, kept our place more safe and secured, and we were disciplined to do only the right thing.
In 1988-1990 I worked naval hosp. Subic the ER. The average life exp. of a military service member who retired in the P.I was 18 MONTHS. I have first hand knowledge of this, Including the CPO I rode next to on the plane ride over to the P.I. He came within 5 days of 18 months he was DOA. however we ran the code blue for 20 min then the doctor called the code off. If you retire in the P.I you need hobbies and stay away from the bar life style. I hope things have changed but I doubt it has much.
One other thing to know for aspiring expats here is that American jails/prisons are Hiltons compared to the cesspools of death and despair that characterize PH jails. I know that Thailand has the death penalty for some drug offense's, I'm not sure about the PH.
It’s honestly the best time to go sober no one gets drunk in pubs anymore if you do you stand out big time and plus it’s the social media age people just film your stupidity. Honestly nothing beats that feeling you get after two pints…unfortunately no one ever stops at two and it will ruin your life.
I left Vancouver for Taiwan in 2004 to escape my drug addiction. While I got off drugs, my alcoholism really enjoyed the cheap beer and eventually I had to quit that as well. I credit AA in Taiwan for showing me how to live sober. Have attended meetings in the Philippines as well. Great meetings. Anyway, if you want it, it works and it is there.
Great video guys. Thank you Paul for the platform and you Aaron for the courage to tell your story. Also Paul I recently watched your video on how you met your wife and was very impressed with how you handled commenting on you and Mae’s relationship with your God, as well as how the topic was part of this video. Full disclosure, I am not a conscious practitioner of any religion (my leaning would be towards Buddhism put come from a Protestant background), but I do believe religion/spirituality is, at its core, a good thing that is missing in modern life. Unfortunately, imho, this potential for good gets lost in many people’s need to proselytize and/or exploit for their own gains. I really appreciate how you broach the subject in such a non-aggressive, non-judgemental manner.

HI PAUL , TY for this video. AARON , I wish you the best of luck , stay with your prayers/mediation. I am also an OLD GEEZEER who lost both my parents. Stat tight with your family , respect others. GOD BLESS CIAO
I've enjoyed Aaron's content. I'm surprised to learn of those struggles. I've seen other people damage their lives with abuse, and so I've never tried illegal drugs ever, and have deep contempt for dealer / parasites that peddle that poison. I believe Singapore has it right in how they "deal" with dealers. Because dealers see up close and personal, the destruction their product causes. Other countries should adopt the Singapore solution and drug dealers can collect their complimentary Darwin Award. Problem solved
Im very close to Aaron's age and spend a lot of time in SEA. I can say with absolute certainty if you have an inkling of problems with alcohol back home, it WILL get exposed in SEA. In SEA, theres simply so much more access especially in expat areas. I can find alcohol 24/7 there and they let you drink until you pass out and then some. In America its a bit easier to control especially when you factor in the women dynamic. Its always been tough for me in my SEA stints to control that. I wish the best of luck to anyone going through something similar
This July I’m sober from alcohol for 10 years. I decided to try to do it myself, and if I didn’t succeed I’d ask for help. Somehow I did it. The first year was hard. Especially at the holidays with all the liquor flowing everywhere. But, after a couple of years, I realized how much better my life and relationships were. That’s not my life anymore. It never will be again.
Was daily at-home drinker while my wife was sick and after she died. Also struggled with alcohol from early 20's. Quit about a year ago, came here in January, and living with my gf whom I met online before I stopped. Resumed my Catholic faith and live drug/alcohol free now. Sometimes a little triggered by tv shows where people are drinking liquor a lot, but then, I think about my good health at 68 years old, and don't want to risk it or my relationship. It's possible to do it when you're motivated.

Aaron thank you for sharing your journey. I just started following you. I wish you the very best ODAT
Hi @JTinLV Thank you, appreciate your support!
God bless you Aaron and Old Dog.
Thanks Gary 👌
Thanks Old Dog
Take Care.
Thank you very much Wayne
Well done ✅ greetings from Ireland 💚

Hi @SpiritRobert-gq3pl Thanks for your kind words!

Nice man we are close. I always like watching expats talk about AA
Hi @cjjennings4947 Congratulations on your 5 years of sobriety! We're glad you found the video relatable and helpful.
Great interview with Aaron, Paul👍 He’s very candid about his addiction, and recovery. Praying for his continued journey into sobriety 🙏
I was fortunate enough to realize that too much of a good thing isn’t always a good thing, and was able to get control of my situation on my own. But it was close. 🤪
Hey Paul, hopefully when Christine and I come back there 9/02-07, we can celebrate your 100+K subscribers! 🤞
Thank you for that... Yeah I agree I have been eating too much Buko (coconut) pie... not healthy to consume by the pie haha
Excellent video, very informative.👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
I drank my first beer at 14. I turn 64 this year and will celebrate 50 years of beer drinking 🍺. I’m retired. I’m solo. Some folks smoke. Some drink coffee. I drink beer. Am I an alcoholic? Maybe. But I’m not hurting anyone.
It's cool if you enjoying it, my grandad was the same , lifelong soak but always happy with it , never rude , always social.. did it until the day he died at 78
Hi @L4P-Monk Cheers to many happy years! Enjoy your celebration, my friend!
@@paulinthephilippinesolddog9234 Thanks Paul my friend. Take care. Hope you are doing well
❤.Hello how are you. I will pray for you. God bless you. 😊
🙏 thank you
Got to love this young man..
Congratulations on your sobriety Aaron I’m a 30 year member of Al-Anon.
Great interview Paul. Good luck to Aaron. Been there done that myself.
Hi @patrickbarnes5531 Appreciate your support, thanks!
i'm sober since birth. jacko said "beat it!" lolz.
Hi @InfiniteGoodness Thanks for sharing your story! We're glad you found inspiration here.
Good job as always
Hi @bryanlonger8646 Thanks!
Paul is about to get a play button.
Hi @1307scooter Thanks for watching!
I haven’t drank for thirty days. Now, I only drink nights. 🍻
Ya, ya, You don't drink any more, but you don't drink any less. Ha ha he he.
Dumba#$...If you knew how dangerous this is, a joke would not be the first fart off your brain.
I mean you're half way there
I'll have 8 years clean from hard drugs in July God willing ❤
Keep up the great work, both of you!
I have an entire lifetime clean from hard drugs.
Hi @chrism4008 Thanks for sharing your inspiring story!
GREAT VIDEO
Thanks my friend
In Mexico the DRUNKS were referred to as THE BLUE PEOPLE
Its so hard getting over drugs. Just can't get motivated after i stop. Its like im walking in mud. Just to slow in every movement...
One other thing to know for aspiring expats here is that American jails/prisons are Hiltons compared to the cesspools of death and despair that characterize PH jails. I know that Thailand has the death penalty for some drug offense's, I'm not sure about the PH.
even drug use in the Philippines can result in "life in prison"
Hi @ningayeti Thanks for sharing your insights, we appreciate the cautionary note!
Great Video Paul. I will be 15 years sober this September. Congratulations Aaron I also found that I can only do it with my focus on God.❤
Congrats Rex! Yes i often lose contact but I try to stay in touch
Way to go Rex. 👍
Hi @rexlaughlin3897 Congratulations to you as well, thank you for sharing your story!
The young man needs the structure of a job. Next time he'll wake up and he'll be 60.
Yep, Prayers plays a big role in almost everything.
🙏🙏
Hi @yahknow01 Amen to that!
Good Video Paul 😮
Thanks 👍
It’s honestly the best time to go sober no one gets drunk in pubs anymore if you do you stand out big time and plus it’s the social media age people just film your stupidity. Honestly nothing beats that feeling you get after two pints…unfortunately no one ever stops at two and it will ruin your life.
Started drinking at 16 socially. Kept drinking socially (every weekend) for the next 18 years. Almost a year dry from alcohol today. IWNDWYT.
Smart young man has his whole life in front of him , wish him all the best
Hi @robertmiur2388 Thanks for your kind words!
Hi @lorne2691 Thanks for your kind words! Glad to share our story and explore spirituality in a respectful way.
You are most welcome. Thank you for replying.
This young man has a fantastic smile.
Hi @Mexicobeanpole Thanks for noticing!
Happy to hear he overcame that challenge
This struggle has been happening for many generations. Look at the 60s / 70s/ 80s and 90s. We cope in one way or another.
Hi @Sipods Well said! It's a universal struggle, indeed.
He hit on some really Great, Honest Points .. This guys done a lot of reflection & thinking ..
Hi @enzos711 Appreciate the honest feedback!

Yes he does
HI PAUL , TY for this video.
I am in a lot of pain do to an injury yet won t take meds , they are addictive,
I know a lot of guys that got hurt on their job , it leads to addiction from their presribed meds. When the script runs its course , they street buy or resort to heroin.
I wonder if AARON would be a good counselor ? He has the life experience as an addict and now clean.
AARON , I wish you the best of luck , stay with your prayers/mediation.
I am also an OLD GEEZEER who lost both my parents. Stat tight with your family , respect others.
GOD BLESS CIAO
Hi @nottelling620 Thanks for sharing, we appreciate your honesty and empathy!
Sharp guy ..
Yeah I have seen you comment in the past! I don't ever talk about it on my channel... I'll occasionally drop hints but that's all
@@aaronaround Just be on guard for the slime that may come out of the woodwork now that they may have seen this video And they may try to tempt you.
Truth spoken here
This July I’m sober from alcohol for 10 years.
Addicted to Filipino women ....
I will arrive in Dumagette Philippines May 7 9:35pm
Was daily at-home drinker while my wife was sick and after she died. Also struggled with alcohol from early 20's. Quit about a year ago, came here in January, and living with my gf whom I met online before I stopped. Resumed my Catholic faith and live drug/alcohol free now. Sometimes a little triggered by tv shows where people are drinking liquor a lot, but then, I think about my good health at 68 years old, and don't want to risk it or my relationship. It's possible to do it when you're motivated.
Hi @DonShelman Thanks for sharing your inspiring story of overcoming addiction. We're glad you're doing well in Dumaguete!
