This morning I had tiffin for the 1st time at this mess.Excellent hospitality rendered by Mr Mohan of Rayor Mess.We were treated as guest in a marriage function.Idly Vadai &Pongal were very tasty.Rates too pocket friendly.whenever I visit Mylapore I would take the tiffin in Rayar Mess.The serving was fast and homely.In this present Era it is very rare to find such a homely Mess.

very very very simple items, they can cook 100 idly in one boil, pongal is very very easy recipe, as making vadai,... without hard working earning money in lakhs, but they knew how to handle people, thats called smile smile smile ( there is no expenses for smile). super valthukkal.
have you tried making sambar, varieties of chutneys every day in large quantities and maintain consistency? or crispness of vada or even coffee decoction and strength of milk? I hope by 'simple' you did not mean to underrate these items or their hard work.

The owner has a clear sense of his life priorities as well as his business. The way he has identified and leveraged the key success factors is easily a case study candidate for management and strategy textbooks. And to top it all, his heart is in the right place. The world needs more like him.
Honestly I feel that this is the best restaurant in the country considering the quality of the items served and the politeness of the staff and the owner. I had visited this homely restaurant only a few times when I lived in Chennai. My father used to visit regularly and he used to tell me that actors Muthuraman, Major Sunderarajan and Nagesh used to visit this restaurant regularly. This gentleman Mr. Mohan is so humble and simple that all the customers have high respect and regard for him. I have not seen any other restaurant where the customer tells the names of the items he has eaten. Everywhere the waiter hands over the bill to the customer. God bless Mr. Mohan and Rayar's Cafe. During my next visit to Chennai, I will make it a point to visit it as many times as possible. They are serving mouth watering dishes like idli, vada, pongal, filter coffee etc. Thanks for this video.

If so many people irrespective of their age throng this place ignoring various negative points (high price, lack of hygiene, ambience, crowds etc.,) mentioned in the comments section, there must be something unique about this mess. It simply cannot be dismissed as hype generated by RUclipsrs. It's not easy to survive in the food business for so many decades - kudos, these guys have done it.
Idli vada main kya unique....my place you get 2 idli 2 vada for rupees 20....3 kind of chutney ...just like other hyped outlets this mentioned outlet in video is also the one ...

Very unique food taste.. Esp kaara chutney and vada.. But too expensive.. Cannot be missed.. But once you had their food you wont feel like going again esp when the customer comes to know that you have to pay for chutney podi and oil..

I was a boy a resident of Mandaveli , When I see Rayars cafe you tube clipping , i still remember my father taking me to this mess for that Hot hot crispy vada with delicious chutney , I am damn sure that notwithstanding that Ii take my daughter to heritage hotels and treat her with food over there , this will NOT come near to Rayar's cafe to contribute to the nostalgic memories , I wish they maintain the hospitality and the taste of the food and pray
