    I know this is never going to happen, but I wish builders would put garages in the back of homes. Garages ruin the street side of homes.

      Agreed, garage doors are one of the hardest things to make look traditional/coherent and proportional. Even if you spend thousands on real wood carriage doors with glass, if they're not exactly right and if the walls around the doors is too skinny/out of proportion, then it STILL looks like crap. It just doesn't look right for the main feature of a home's facade to be doors down to an expanse of pavement.

      @pcatful Месяц назад +3

      It used to happen. All three of my childhood homes. One had a long driveway to the detached garage. A second had the detached garage on the alley. The third had an attached garage on the alley. I’ve seen the idea in new urbanist designs. Streets and lots can accommodate the alley if the the development is done right.😮 Most people don’t need a huge front yard and all streets don’t have to be wide.🎉

      @pcatful Месяц назад +1

      @@Fedgery007 haha. Later I had a “starter” house with a three car garage. The house looked like an afterthought. No alleys in the area where I live now.

    Perhaps adding a trellis over the garage might add some dimension and growing some plants over the garage might help to soften the area. I would also consider a lime wash over the brick to give it an old cottage appearance.

      Take a look at Marianne Cusato's book, 'Get Your House Right', which goes element by element with drawings labelled Do and Don't, with a brief explanation as to why. It doesn't, however, go on a project by project basis, which is a real selling point for Brent's videos.

    I think you improved the structure's appearance very nicely - especially with changes that diminish the weight of the garage door. I would be interested in seeing what changes you might propose for the other facades. After watching your videos, I have adopted the practice of using a translucent paper overlay to show design iterations. I find it more effective than presenting multiple images side-by-side. Thanks for demonstrating this technique so effectively!

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  Месяц назад +3

      I think the thought was that if, when building it, they had arranged the elements differently, it would cost the same but look better. The garage door is an upgrade but still very affordable. The pediment over the door could cost a few hundred dollars more. I think they save money by taking out the fan light window and there is no less brick. Maybe a wash overall???

    It seems like these would be really easy changes to make and it looked 10x better! Your phone should be ringing off the hook from builders asking you to make their homes look decent. I fear that people don't know what looks good unless they see it, and with all the builders producing ugly houses, consumers probably don't know what they're missing. Do you think this is true, or another theory?

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  Месяц назад +3

    I can tell your design would cost a lot less than the original. Here are my rough estimates:
    eliminate 2 gables on right side and a fan light -$15,000
    eliminate brick walls next to front door -$5,000
    number of other windows (no change)
    front door decorations +$5,000
    premium garage door +$2,000
    switch driveway materials on left side, maybe pavers +1,000
    sidewalk to front door +1,000
    brick "belt line" (no significant cost, just modify brick orientation)
    entablature trim +1,000
    -----------------------------------------
    Net: -$10,000 (savings)

    Yes, the exterior of the house looks much better with your proposed upgrades.
    •But how does those upgrades effect the interior?
    • For instance the window above the front door, is that a foyer with a 16 foot ceiling height?
    •And separating the windows above the garage, is that even possible there may be a closet in the way. (today’s architects can butchered inside also).
    •Also, the main roof looks squatty, why not make both roofs the same pitch, or at least closer. With a 5/12 min pitch.

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  Месяц назад +1

      The interior was not the point of the exercise. The point was to show that even ugly builder grade houses can look better than they do, if the builders would use some traditional practices.
