    The two finger salute, goes back a 700 years or so, when the French feared English and Welsh archers so much, they would cut their bow fingers off when captured. So sticking two fingers up was a 'f*** you, we still have our bow fingers'

      +Guybrush Threepwood thank you so much for the explanation. I'm so embarrassed that I kept flipping everyone off. It's like my fingers had a mind of their own. They just couldn't be controlled. Rest assured, I have severely punished them. They are very sorry. Thank you so much for watching and commenting and welcome to the Craving Cinematics family. Many blessings, Kelly

      Craving Cinematics haha, if you're finger nails are pointing outward, you're flipping people off, but the reason above is where it started, if they are facing you, it's v for victory.

      except that Churchill never even took that from the french, thats a coincidence. Churchill disliked the french culture.

    Your husband is correct about the reverse v sign. I do not trust any politician without a sense of humour. Lady Astor said to Churchill while in debate in Parliament " If I were your wife I would put poison in your tea" to which Churchill replied " Lady Astor if I were your husband I WOULD DRINK IT! Churchill was not perfect ,anyway one has to define perfect. Three events were paramount . 1 Churchill arriving just in time,2 Dunkirk, 3 the Battle of Britain air war which was vital.

    He wasn't flipping the bird. Although in modern times I does mean f**k off but Churchill used it to stand for V as in victory

  • @russellyoung5211
    @russellyoung5211 6 лет назад +10

    the V was for victory....and im not a historian but the V sign comes from waaaaay back when the french threatened to cut the draw fingers off any English longbowmen captured in battle...so it comes from that time the longbowmen would give the v sign to opposing fench armies as a taunt i suppose.. x

      +russell young ooohhhhh, that makes so much sense. That is so cool. I just read this to Donathan and he's now holding up his two fingers and putting it all together. I think he's just flipping me off. Honestly though, that makes perfect sense. Thanks, Russell, for watching and commenting and welcome to the Craving Cinematics family. We really appreciate you taking your time to let us know. Many blessings, Kelly

    Hi guys showing the V sign is like this... with the knuckles facing out is like flipping the bird when knuckles towards yourself is the sign of peace, hope that clears up any confusion :) another great video, I agree a possible Oscar for Oldman. Take care.

    • @CravingCinematics
      @CravingCinematics  6 лет назад

      +Kermits Ghost hey Kermit, I had no idea that's what it meant, but Donathan did. He told me and then my hand took on a mind of its own and it wouldn't stop. I'm wiser now.
      I can't wait until this movie is out. If Old man doesn't win, I may just hang it up.
      I c

    And that is giving the bird over here too from us non aristocrats. We normal fellas created it after the battle of Agincourt after the french said they’d chop those two finger off any longbow men.

    Loved the review guys!...the V sign derives from when the English used to fight the French in olden times...the English would taunt the French Archers before battle by flicking them the V signal meaning if we catch you we will chop off your two fingers that pulled back the bow strings.

    Just to clear any confusion up with regards to the 2 finger salute comments lol. It does come from the English longbow archers. Over the centuries it's gone from doing it to the French before battle in the way of taunting them to an everyday f you gesture to whoever you do it to as in flipping them off. Enjoyed watching btw

    Contrary to what other people said to you, let me correct a few things: yes, the V salute comes from way back, but considering this, the Romans used standardized hand gestures when sneaking around, V would be for splitting up, or one half go right and the other left.
    Churchill never even knew what it meant until he was told so, and even then, that hand gesture would mean something entirely different from this french origin.

    Doesn't that scene where Churchill is on the phone to president Roosevelt asking for support - for ships / for arms - for the planes that were already purchased but couldnt be delivered - and basically being turned down , make u feel a bit uncomfortable ? How accurate that scene was I don't know - but it wasn't until 41 that America stepped up , a full year after the events depicted in this movie

      History rarely makes me uncomfortable because i wasn't there and i cant change it. What makes me uncomfortable are things that happen now that i can possibly help change but dont have the power or resources to do so. That makes me uncomfortable.
      Blessings to you, Kelly

    Just after Dunkirk Churchill gave orders to sink the French navy which at the time was second only to the Royal Navy all rested on the given word of a French Admiral which with only two days before Germany was to take over the French ships was not enough of a guarantee for Churchill so the most dangerous of French battleships were sunk with the loss of well over a thousand French sailors whom only two weeks previous were helping evacuate British and French troops from Dunkirk. All that makes Churchill sound like a war criminal. Just remember that Churchill could not see into the future and combine the Royal Navy with the French Navy and the German Navy and i would not give much chance for the smaller American Navy. Hitler would have insisted on the hand over of the Royal Navy as part of any peace agreement and this scenario is a very likely scenario and Churchill could not predict the outcome of the VITAL air war known as the Battle of Britain but the rest of this scenario was not difficult to imagine as very likely. I am a pragmatist and find it difficult to think how Churchill could have done anything differently and my thoughts go out to the sacrifice of the French sailors. Look up "Operation Catapult".
