      Welsh boy here too Martyn, my Nan passed away in November she was 97, worked in a munitions factory in Cardiff and was bombed, so yes agreed it was Britain, not just England for sure, but they bore the brunt. You can't expect American's or any of the Allies to know exactly what happened, I didn't even know how many states there were in America when I left school because why would that be important to us, more Falklands and WWII the way the winners get to tell the story they want to tell. I lost way more family in WWI than II, but no need to be hard on these 2, they are the minority of American's that take a proper interest in our history and how we got through, so many stories that haven't been told, happy that Dunkirk came out as it helps, god bless

      It wasn't England. It wasn't Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England. It was all of those, but it was India, it was Africa, it was New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Fiji, Bermuda, Gibraltar, The Falkland dependencies, everywhere else in Empire that I've forgotten to mention, it was the Free Europeans, with even a few supportive Americans chucked in. The victory of the Battle of Britain was the product of the blood, sweat and tears of many nations - those individuals involved directly and those indirectly.

    You are correct in that Churchill came along at the precise moment . The U.K. was still trying to forget the horror of WW1 and politicians thought another world war was to horrific to contemplate. But it took a little time to understand that it was fight or be slaves. Churchill just felt that Hitler would not be stopped. The Battle of Britain was VITAL because if the air war was lost the German task of invasion would have been easier with air superiority . Churchill was not perfect one must first define perfect anyway. My family went through the Blitz but Germany suffered horrendous bombing in retaliation with the point being their are no real winners in war but to my mind WW2 was the only war I can think of that had to be fought in order the world would not sink into a new dark age of masters and slaves.

    Churchill was a Great War time leader but as he was told when he visited a blitzed street in London and said to the people “we can take it”
    A woman in the crowed shouted back “ We are the ones taking it mister you’re in a bloody great concrete bunker”.
    That said his leader ship at that time is undisputed and I still think his speech to Congress was a master piece that’s never been bettered and sealed the US UK relationship which despite differences of opinion endures to this day.

    Churchill made military mistakes in the Gallipoli campaign in WW1 men died. He felt a lot of guilt although he felt his plans where ruined by others. When WW2 came about the politicians didn't trust him Churchill tried to avoid those mistakes again especially in Dunkirk and later during the D Day landings. It's true what you said people do say he wasn't a very good peace time leader he became Prime Minister for a second time and was voted out sad I felt it was a bit of a slap in the face after what he did for Britain and the world.

      Churchill was also a blatant racist and was responsible for the manufactured Bengal famine in India that killed millions of Indians.

    • @maxheadroom3839
      @maxheadroom3839 6 лет назад +3

      Tre Drago Hitler caused the Bengal famine the second world war threw up problems nobody expected WW2 was tough for everyone some regrettable dessions had to be made in order for Britain to survive. How would India have faired under German or Japanese rule if Europe fell. Britain's survival was crucial it was a Military base for the Americans and the British to retake Europe from. Without Britain the focus of the war would have turned to Asia I would like to have seen what India would have done then. People like you don't seem to care about the survival of Britain like the war in Europe didn't effect India it did without Britain fighting on the Germans and the Italians would have turned south and put forces into India the Japanese would have hit India from the east India couldn't have held out against those odds. India most probably would have been left under the control of the Japanese and if you think British rule was bad you should should really have tasted Japanese rule. Indians could view the Bengal famine as a heroic sarafice for world freedom but the they see it as British cruelty. The truth is without Churchill Indians would have done what Nevil Chamberlain wanted for Britain just given up and accepted Japanese rule let me tell you it would have been a mistake. Churchill deciding to fight on meant India had to fight on as well.

    He wasn't first choice (by "The Establishment" not the people) because he did have a rather dodgy military and political track record. Gallipoli is an example of the former and the fact that he changed parties a couple of times the latter. The old boy came good in 1940 though so fair play.

    I trully don't know why Churchill still treated like a hero. he is just a normal tactical general no more than that. moreover there are lots of tactical officers in German who have more smart than churchill such as Erwin Rommel, whereas he was a typical sturdy ignorant person who don't acknowledge other's pain and had SERIOUS RACISM.
